Living Our Faith

How far are we willing to go to do what we feel we need to do? In today’s gospel, we encounter two opposite forces, both compelled to action to do what they felt was necessary. The magi, who had opened their hearts to God, traveled across countries and the elements to bringing their homage and a portion of their wealth to God’s newborn son. Herod, who wrapped himself up in his belongings and stature, was working just as hard to keep everything he had…even to the point of plotting to take the life of this holy newborn child. In this story, its unlikely we can imagine ourselves behaving like Herod. But do we fall into this trap in lesser decisions each day? Do we protect what we have at the expense of others? Do we withhold aid or charity to those who can’t fend for themselves to save more for ourselves or our families? If we give our first and our best to God, like the magi, we can be transformed like they were. If not, our hearts are at risk of hardening like Herod’s.

Viviendo Nuestra Fe
