Living Our Faith

In Jesus’ conversation with the man in today’s gospel, he intentionally summarizes those commandments he knows the man has followed sincerely. Then, with love, he identifies the area that he knows the man struggles with; wealth and possessions. Even in biblical times, the misuse of money and the over-valuing of possessions were barriers to following God’s word. It’s important that we take Jesus’ words in today’s gospel to heart. A focus on wealth and acquiring more than we truly need can turn into idolatry without us even realizing it. God wants us to first and foremost be rich in our relationship with him. While most of us aren’t called to sell everything we have and give to the poor, we are called to use our resources to help those in need through charitable giving and through the ministries of the Church. The rewards, as Jesus tells us, will be great both here on earth and in eternal life with him.

Viviendo Nuestra Fe
