Forming Our Faith ST. LOUIS CATHOLIC SCHOOL excellence in education pre k4 through 8th grade mrs. Cindy Gee, M.Ed., Principal
St. Louis Catholic School’s 7th/8th grade STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) elective hosted a Zero-Waste Day in December. They performed a cafeteria waste audit and found that students were throwing away approximately 50 pounds of trash a day, half of which could be composted. This comes out to 8,784 pounds/year or about 4.5 tons! All the items that can be composted are being collected and then will be used at the St. Louis gardens. The day was a huge success! The students only produced 0.9 pounds of trash compared to their “baseline” measurement of 48.8 pounds. That’s a 98% decrease in the amount of trash that is normally produced! With a little thought and planning, it’s amazing what we can do to help the environment.
