THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS a weekly bulletin & newsletter July 8, 2018 • 14 th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“...I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever” Ps:23:6

Men of St. Louis, You are invited to attend our upcoming Men’s ACTS Retreat July 19 – 22, 2018. Like most men your first thought is likely “I’m not a retreat kind of guy…”. Don’t worry – this retreat is built for you! ACTS stands for Adoration, Community, Theology, and Service and this is a great opportunity to help build YOUR Community with other men in the parish. Men just like you – struggling in their own lives but all the while striving to be closer to our Lord. Men who want to be better husbands to their wives. Men working to be Holy fathers, sons, brothers, friends, co-workers, neighbors, you name it. You will be amazed at how much you have in common with these men and how much you will learn. You will have a good time. You will make some new friends. You will return with a new outlook. Every retreat there are a few men who REALLY need to be there. Maybe that man is you. Or maybe you know of someone. Maybe YOU end up making an impact on one of your fellow men. Indeed, our Lord works in mysterious ways… But he does work through all of us. 1

Our theme this retreat is from the last line of Psalm 23: “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Men, I pray that you are open to the call to attend and give the Lord a few days to improve on your relationship with Him and with your family. We need you! And believe me, you will be glad you did. More details along with online registration is available at www.st-louis.org/acts. Register early as spots are limited. The cost of the retreat is $175 but please do not let financial difficulties prevent you from attending – your parish is here to assist. God Bless and looking forward to seeing you at the retreat! - Phil, Jeff, & Jeff For any questions or concerns please contact Phil Tucker, Director (ptucker001@gmail.com); Jeff Navarro, Co-Director (jn.2565@gmail.com); or Jeff Kline, CoDirector (jekline@cisco.com).

THE ART OF SPIRITUAL DIRECTION Spiritual direction is the art of walking with others and helping them notice what God is up to in their lives. It is not a profession but a ministry and—at its best—a mystery that unfolds over time. Spiritual directors have had the personal experience of working for several years with their own directors as well as formal training in the techniques and ethics of spiritual direction. The Diocese of Austin recently recognized 24 newly qualified spiritual directors who have completed a two-year course through the Diocesan Institute of Spiritual Direction. A roster of qualified directors is maintained in the St. Louis parish office and in the Diocesan offices. Others may be equally qualified through other programs, such as priests and deacons, but time constraints generally prevent them from entering into an open-ended process that may unfold over a long period of time. Selecting a qualified and appropriate spiritual director is important. Anyone can claim to be a spiritual director, but it’s best to work with someone your priest or another trusted advisor refers you to. You will be exploring issues close to the heart and spirit. Your director will have knowledge of the spiritual practices and experiences of many of the Church’s great teachers, and can help guide you through stages that can be confusing and troubling but which are normal and well-recognized. Spiritual directors are bound by confidentiality. Whatever is discussed in a session with a directee will not be revealed without permission or if there is reason to believe the directee or another person may be in danger of physical harm or abuse to self or others. Spiritual direction is not therapy or a substitute for it, but can often be a beneficial adjunct to it.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY TRUCK AND THRIFT STORE

The St. Vincent dePaul Society truck will be in the south parking lot of the church on Saturday, July 14th, from 10am - 2pm, rain or shine. Please donate your gently used clothing, household items, sports equipment, small furniture, books and magazines, children’s items, and so on, to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Please help us to help others! The truck was to have visited us on June 2nd; however, due to Confirmation being held at St. Louis that day, we had to postpone the truck’s visit. And if you are out shopping for your summer needs, come and visit the SVDP Thrift Store to get some great bargains! The store is located at 901 W. Braker, just off Lamar. It’s open MondaySaturday from 10am-7pm. Lots of parking available. Come visit!

Sessions are generally held bi-monthly or monthly. Some directors charge fees for their time while others do not. A common practice is to ask the directee to donate a sum of money equal to one hour’s wages to the church or one of its ministries, for example the St. Louis School, Mobile Loaves and Fishes, St. Vincent de Paul of some other ministry within the church.
