7th Grade Pilgrimage to San Antonio In early April, seventh grade went on a pilgrimage to San Antonio. It was a great trip for our 7th grade to learn about Texas History and Religion combined. They were accompanied by Fr. James, who said Mass at the Mission San Jose. Students ate lunch in the Market square and visited 2 additional Missions as well as the Alamo. We hope this is a trip that will become an annual event.

Chikage Windler’s Visit Students were very excited to get a special visitor from KEYE news station, Meteorologist Chikage Windler! She spoke to students about different types of weather and how science and math can lead you into a career in meteorology. Students were eager to participate in demonstrations and we hope she will come to visit us again in the future.

These new members will have the opportunity to plan, organize, and implement a service project for the school, church, or greater community, as well as working on individual service projects.

SLCS provides a rigorous curriculum for Pre-K4 through 8th grade that will help students achieve success beyond their time here. Publication Deadlines This year, the July-August issue of The Spirit of St. Louis will be a combined two-month edition. Please be planning and thinking ahead for the August articles that you want included. The deadline for that edition is Monday, June 6th. Thank you for your timely contributions in meeting that deadline. Weekly bulletin deadlines are always 10 days in advance of an intended weekend. Submit items to bulletin@st-louis.org no later than Wednesdays at noon.

Parish Envelopes Changing Color! The borders on our regular weekend envelopes are changing from red to blue, beginning in July. They’ll have a new picture that looks better with the new royal blue color! We’re also tired of “seeing red” so hope you agree that the new royal blue is a great improvement! Thanks to your continued generosity through your tithes and offerings, we’re no longer operating “in the red” and the blue is symbolic of the blue skies ahead for St. Louis Parish!

New Leadership in Your Ministry? If you have elected new officers or other leadership in your ministry/ organization that meets on the St. Louis campus, be sure the new people are certified in the Ethics and Integrity in Ministry policies of the Diocese of Austin. They must have completed an Application for Ministry for a background check and should have attended an EIM workshop. Call Brenda Beltran (512) 454-0384 ext. 211 or contact her by email to report names of new leaders or to check on EIM status: brenda.beltran@st-louis.org

DCCW Honors Our Former Pastor and St. Louis Parish! Msgr Louis J. Wozniak was honored at the 67th Annual Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Convention, held in April, for 65 years of priestly service to the Diocese. Shown with him are Fr. Melvin Dornak, Diocesan Council Spiritual Advisor, Bishop Joe Vasquez and Dianne Friend, Council President. Msgr Louis’ ordination date is May 26. This year’s DCCW convention was held in Austin and St. Louis Church hosted the convention Mass on Monday, April 11th, with both Bishop Joe Vasquez and Bishop Daniel Garcia present. St. Louis ladies in the DCCW did an outstanding job helping to organize both the Mass and the convention. At the annual banquet held that same Monday evening, our parish was recognized by Rev. Ed Karasek, the President of the Clerical Endowment Fund, for its contributions to the CEF over the last year. The Austin DCCW Council was one of the top three Councils collecting funds from April 2015 – March 2016. Austin was surpassed only by the Northern Council and Brazos Valley Council. The top three parishes collecting CEF funds in the Diocese included Church of the Assumption in West, St. Anthony’s in Bryan, and St. Louis in Austin! Special thanks to Patsy Alvarez of St. Louis who is the CEF Chair for the Austin Council, and to Father James Misko for emceeing the DCCW banquet and supporting the CEF throughout the year! Thank you, too, to those who support the CEF by enrolling loved ones (living or deceased) for Masses. The CEF cards are sold in the St. Louis Church Office and once a year in the Narthex. Masses for those enrolled are offered monthly by the Bishop of Austin, and the President of the CEF. Those enrolled and their benefactors are also remembered in prayers by the seminarians of the diocese and the Carmelite Nuns of the Ancient Observance Monastery of Our Lady of Grace in Christoval, Texas. The funds collected are then given to the Bishop for the education of our seminarians! Look for CEF cards in the Narthex June 11-12.

SANCTUARY CANDLE MEMORIALS The sanctuary candle is traditionally seen in Catholic churches, burning constantly to indicate the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. At St. Louis, in both the main nave and the chapel, the sanctuary candles are burning high above the floor in beautifully ornate fixtures suspended from the ceiling. Parishioners are given the opportunity to memorialize a deceased loved one with a $10 contribution, selecting a specified week in which one or both of the two sanctuary candles will be burned in their honor.Visit the church office with your donation, the name of your loved one, your choice of sanctuary candle and the selected week. Memorials are denoted in the Main Nave (M/N) or Chapel (C). Memorials reserved since the last newsletter deadline include:

Missionary Appeal June 18-19

Saying Goodbye to our Youth Minister, Paul Stadelman After two and one-half years as Youth Minister, we are bidding farewell to Paul Stadelman during June. He is returning to the Diocese of Dallas because a youth ministry opportunity opened up for him at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Plano. Paul wasn’t looking to leave St. Louis, but this new job gives him the chance to return to his hometown, putting him closer to family, while working in another vibrant parish youth program. Of his experience in our parish, Paul states, “I have grown professionally and spiritually with the faith community at St. Louis and consider myself very blessed to have been able to do so. The joy I have had working with the youth, parents, parishioners and fellow staff members has made this an incredibly difficult decision to make, but one I ultimately think is best.” We are grateful for the activities that Paul has launched in Youth Ministry here, including high school retreats, the Young Church program, leading youth to national and diocesan conferences and working with our Confirmandi. He has built a solid foundation for the next director and will work hard to ensure there is a seamless transition for his replacement. Please keep Paul in your prayers and join us in wishing him well in his new assignment!

Annually the Diocese of Austin asks each parish to host a Missionary, not only to raise awareness about missionary work around the world, but to offer us the opportunity to reach beyond our borders and support the greater Church. Our assigned missionary speaker this year is from Theotokos, a Texas based, non-profit charitable organization that was created in 1987 and is committed to assisting in the care and education of the less privileged children in Bolivia. Our weekend speaker will be a Sister from the Servants of the Lord Dominican Sisters, presently active in Bolivia and Argentina. Three of the Dominican Sisters from Bolivia have also been working in the Annunciation Maternity Home for Unwed Mothers in Georgetown, Texas, for the last few years. Thank you for giving them your attention during the weekend of June 18-19 and supporting their efforts!

Planning Marriage in the Future? The Sacrament of Marriage involves many steps, but your faith community is here to assist you. While you don’t have to be a member to marry here, it is the support and tithes of our generous parishioners that make our marriage programs and facilities possible. Consequently, fees for the rental of facilities are assessed according to parishioner or nonparishioner status. If you have been a registered member and documented giver (through checks or envelopes) for at least six months before coming in to plan a future wedding, you will be eligible for the discounted parishioner rate at a savings of $600. Call our Church Office for more information on this and all questions related to the marriage preparation process (512) 454-0384.

Remember the Cry Room! Although we love our infants and toddlers and the “music” they make, please remember that what may be music to one person’s ears, can be distracting to another. If your little tyke begins to “sing” during Mass, please exit quickly and introduce your child to the Cry Room. It’s often difficult to hear in our Church, even when there are no background noises, so be considerate of others and remove your little one as promptly as possible! Due to the Cry Room’s size, just one adult should accompany the child, so there’s room for more future choir members! THANK YOU!!!

Divine Mercy Chaplet During the Year of Mercy, we invite you to join us in praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet and selected prayers from the Diary of St. Faustina every Sunday at 3:00pm in the Chapel. This is a beautiful way to offer up your time and incorporate this devotional as part of your Lenten prayer discipline. Bring your rosary and come join your fellow parishioners as we unite ourselves in prayer with our Holy Father.

St. Vincent de Paul Society Truck Coming Saturday, June 18th, from 10am-2pm, the St. Vincent de Paul Society truck will be stationed in our parking lot. Please donate your gently used clothing, household items, sports equipment, small furniture, books and magazines, children’s items and more. Items that you no longer need can give hope to a needy family! Please help us to help others!

S A I N T LO U I S K I NG OF F R A NC E WOMEN’S CLUB

Proclamation of Purpose: W

e recognize that many women of St. Louis Parish contribute their time and talents in different areas of the Church. We also recognize that many women of the Church are not actively involved in these areas. We recognize that all women, actively involved in the Church or not, are important, because each is a member of the same Body. It is the purpose, therefore, to unify all women in St. Louis Parish into one organization so that each may benefit by sharing together their unity of faith. We recognize that from this unity of faith can come increased fellowship, new friendships, and more interest in the roles that women assume within the parish. It is our purpose to structure an organization for women that will encourage its members to grow in faith by sharing together their individual roles within the Church. All activities of this organization are done in a spirit of faith-sharing with respect to each person’s role in the family of Christ.

All

women of the parish are automatically members of the St. Louis Women’s Club. We invite you to take a moment and register as a participating member by returning the form on the next page to the church office. We also appreciate any donation that you are able to give that will allow us to better serve the parish, however, a donation is not required to register. Meetings and programs are scheduled throughout the year, and we sponsor many other activities. Visit www.st-louis.org/womens-club for a full description of ministries and activities, and meeting dates. We hope that you will consider these as your time permits.

THE Mercy OF GOD Transforms OUR LIVES BY REV. ALBERTO CARBAJAL

my first parish assignment. One of the coolest things in my first year of priesthood has been meeting people. By meeting people where they are, I have experienced their desire to change their lives and receive the mercy of God. I have realized that I am called to exercise the mercy of Jesus Christ. Priests from other parishes and from other dioceses have also expressed that the Year of Mercy has been a real blessing for the people in their parishes.

Four days after his election, during the Angelus, (March 17, 2013) Pope Francis commented on the bible passage of the woman caught in adultery (Jn. 8:1-11) whom Jesus saves from being condemned to death. Pope Francis explains that Jesus is merciful and forgives this sinful person. Pope Francis in reference to this passage puts special emphasis on the mercy of God that changes everything making the world less cold and amore just one. From the beginning of his papacy, Pope Francis has continually invited us to trust in the mercy of God so that our lives can be transformed. As we move past the half-point mark of the Year of Mercy (December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016) the invitation continues for us to open our hearts to the mercy of God. Shortly after my ordination to the priesthood on June 6, 2015, the Year of Mercy was promulgated. Being new to the priesthood, it was a blessing that the Year of Mercy overlapped with the beginning of my priestly ministry. The reason is first of all, that the life of Pope Francis is a great example of mercy. He worked with the poorest of the poor and the abandoned as a bishop in Buenos Aires. As a result, he has experienced the mercy of God and now as the representative of Christ on earth he shows God’s mercy to the entire world. In addition, the Year of Mercy reminds us that we can obtain mercy. In other words, the mercy of God is so close to us that it is attainable or within reach. This parish, St. Louis King of France, has been

When we speak of mercy, we can go back to the core of our humanity; that we are created to love and to receive love. It is not that mercy is an abstract concept, but a blessing that comes from God. It is God himself who gives mercy to us so that our lives can be transformed and fulfilled. Mercy and love have to be part of our lives. God in his goodness and love created us to love. He is a merciful God who continually calls us to love. But, how many times during the day do you remind yourself that God loves you? Do you stop for a moment and with your eyes closed and in silence actually tell yourself two things: 1) God loves me and 2) I am called to experience his mercy and love so that I can be merciful to others? Perhaps we do this very few times during the day because we are always busy. And we continually add more things to our busy life. We go from one place to the next, from one activity to the other and suddenly the day ends. Thus, Pope Francis reminds us in Misericordiae Vultus: “at times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives” (#3). With this, the Pope is saying that we need to remind ourselves every day that God is merciful. We are called to experience the love and mercy of God so that our lives are transformed and in turn, we may show mercy to others. There is a hymn that is used for communion called “Amen, el Cuerpo de Cristo” by John Schiavone, which speaks of receiving the Body and Blood and becoming what we receive. This liturgical hymn beautifully expresses what we are called to do, namely, to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and radiate His love and mercy to our

brothers and sister. In the same way, we receive the mercy of God and become mercy to others. We must show mercy to those we meet daily. How cool is that? We receive the mercy of God, our lives are transformed and then we go out to give mercy because the world desperately needs it. It is when we give mercy to our brothers and sisters in the world that our lives become mercy. One extraordinary person who was transformed by the mercy of God was Cardinal Francis Xavier Van Thuan. While he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, he made the decision to live the grace of the present moment, and not only live in the future expectation of liberation. He decided to make of the jail cell, a cathedral, and prisoners and guards, his parishioners. Although he was severely tortured in jail he exerted a merciful discipleship. And so, Cardinal Francis Xavier Van Thuan brought many unbelievers to Christ through his faithful witness of mercy. This exemplar life of mercy transforms the world. This is the message of the Gospel that our lives are to be transformed by experiencing the mercy of God and then become merciful to others. In the most difficult situation, Cardinal Francis Xavier Van Thuan decided to make the best of situations by becoming merciful to his fellow prisoners. You and I are called to do the same. In this Year of Mercy, we can take many initiatives, do many activities and take social action in our parish and in our community. We have this great opportunity to bring God’s mercy to others, especially those in most need. We have an opportunity close at hand, when we share with those that have the least, when we visit the elderly and the sick, when we feed the hungry, and when we visit the imprisoned. This is mercy at its best when we choose to go out of our way to become merciful to others. Many blessings for all and let us pray for one another.
