TO RECEIVE THE SACRAMENTS IS NOT A GOAL

It is a Journey!

The reception of the sacraments for the first time is not just a special time of grace for the children but also for their families and all the parish community. All Christians share the joy and happiness of this day; however, we need to debug some ideas that could detract from the wonder of the Sacraments. While many children of our parish are preparing to receive the sacraments for the first time in May and June, we can do some reflections, along with our prayers for them. Before other considerations, the first thing is to realize that Jesus Christ wants to have a personal relationship with each of these little ones. We are in risk of despising childhood religiosity, thinking that children are not “mature” enough to discern and to make definitive life choices. However, this is not the thought reflected in the Gospel of Jesus Christ: “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Mt 18, 3) “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like 1

a child will not enter it.” (Mk 10: 13-16). Undoubtedly, these Gospel readings show that the pride of the adult is much greater obstacle for the union with God, than children´s immaturity. God is perfectly capable of transmitting His timeless message in a simple language for his children. The First Communion of our children reminds us of the Gospel ideal of being like children with all their simplicity and purity, in following Christ. “Today, I love you more than yesterday but less than tomorrow”. It’s a mistake that we emphasize the fact that it is the “First” Communion, and let go unnoticed the “second” or “third”. For our children, beyond their natural enthusiasm for the new, we must convey that more important than the first Communion are the following ones, and this reflection must also cause us adults to examine the way we receive the most precious gift ... Jesus in the Eucharist. Let us pray for the children of our Parish who will receive communion for the first time, so they come to our Lord´s Table, with pure hearts and full of love.

How did the St. Vincent de Paul Society get started? In 1831 Frederic Ozanam was a student at the Sorbonne in Paris when one of his professors asked, “What do you do besides talk to prove the faith you claim is in you?” Frederic was troubled by this question, and to put his faith into action, he gathered some friends to visit the poor in the tenements and to offer aid. This eventually became a group dedicated to helping the poor under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul, who in the 1600’s, was known for his help of the poor. Many societies were formed throughout Europe, and by 1848, the first group was formed in America. Now almost every parish in the country has a St. Vincent de Paul Society. Did you know that St. Louis Church’s SVdP group was formed 55 years ago? We help the poor and the underemployed within our parish boundaries. This help is only possible because of your generosity -- the money put in the poor boxes and those funds dedicated to us in the Social Ministries collection the second Sunday of the month. Without your help, we would be unable to help the poor in our own community. Thank you. More about our ministry to come in a bulletin next month.

CALLED FORTH THROUGH DISCERNMENT PASTORAL COUNCIL On Pentecost Sunday, May 20, 2018, the process of calling the newest Pastoral Council members from our community will begin. From its very beginning, the Church has called forth leaders through a discernment rooted in prayer and openness to the Holy Spirit. Thus, although we are unworthy to receive the wisdom of the Father, we rely on his mercy and guidance. What is discernment? Our faith understands discernment as the process of coming to our Heavenly Father and saying “I don’t know the answer.” It is a process that is Spirit-led. It involves prayer and a willingness to be open to the Holy Spirit’s presence and direction in your life and the life of the faith. Through discernment, the council will ask all St. Louis parishioners to examine and acknowledge their gifts from God and ask if they are being called to use those gifts in the service of the parish as parish leaders. How will discernment take place at St. Louis Church? On Pentecost Sunday of each year, the parishioners of St. Louis will be asked to prayerfully discern who they believe God is calling forth as leaders in this faith community. Persons may put forward their own name or the name of someone else. Those whose names have been called forth will be invited to two evenings of discernment where they will further reflect on God’s call as a servant to the St. Louis community. Following these evenings of prayer, current members of the Pastoral Council will consider those called to discern and seek the council of the Holy Spirit to select the new members. What can I do to prepare for this discernment? Pray. Is God calling you to serve this faith community as a member of the Pastoral Council? If the answer may be yes, then give our Father the opportunity to speak to your heart.

“Father James told me to be involved in the school, but when someone tells you to go do it, you don’t really know what it’s going to look like,” Seminarian Will Rooney said, looking back on his pastoral year with Saint Louis Catholic School. “I was assigned to go help during Vocations Week, but after that assignment, I really just walked around.” Walking around through the campus turned out to be the thing for which Seminarian Will was known. “He just shows up,” sixth grade teacher Emily Loontjer said. “And the Holy Spirit brings him in. I would be teaching literature and he would come and start connecting literature with religion.” Mrs. Loontjer says Seminarian Will became a regular, taking an interest in reading the books with the students. “We were reading these secular books, because it’s a lot harder to find Catholic books than I thought, and he would start asking the kids which virtues they were seeing in the characters even though the books were secular. I loved that he showed up and had us look at the world through that Catholic lens.” Seminarian Will says he learned that God would provide for others through him if he just walked around, something he learned from his former associate pastor, the late Father Wade Russell. “He had a thing called, ‘Management by Walking Around.’ He would visit people in their offices and just see how they were doing. That had a big impact on me. So, I decided to just go walking around the school and say, ‘How are you doing?’ And God uses that time to show you their needs.” “He’s so willing to do anything,” Development Director Jessica Chaffee said. “And he does it with joy.” She says he spent a month with the second grade as they prepared for First Communion, helped with all the class retreats, camped and led prayer with the Boy Scouts at Zion National Park, put on the first teacher and staff retreat in eight years, and eagerly volunteered to help coach the cross-country team. “We practiced at 6:30 in the morning,” Mrs. Chaffee said. “And he was there every morning. He was a good motivator. 7

He had a good way of pushing kids in a positive way.” Sixth grader Ben Wallis was one of the runners. “At first, I was in the back,” Wallis said. “But [Seminarian Will] slowed down, and he ran with me to support me. He would tell me to keep going; he’s a good guy.” Mrs. Chaffee says Wallis became one of the fastest runners through Seminarian Will’s encouragement. “I really want kids to know God’s love,” Seminarian Will said. “If you’re a priest or a seminarian or someone who just wants to work in ministry, you have to relate humanly, speaking with people and just hanging out is part of that. Some of the best conversations I’ve had are just from following Father James’ lead and standing there at pick up after school with the eighth graders and the kindergartners - just being present to people. I want kids to know they’re good, that they have value.” Mrs. Chaffee said it showed in how Seminarian Will made a point to visit with people and learn their names. “He wants to form relationships and help them to feel comfortable,” she said. “Some people are better with younger kids or older ones, but he connected with everyone.” Seminarian Will says he originally intended to double major in poultry science and agricultural engineering from Texas A&M. When his first internship didn’t go as he expected, he quit and dropped the poultry science major. But God opened a door for him to start working in middle school youth ministry at Saint Thomas Aquinas. That lasted more than three years as he continued his studies. After earning an agricultural engineering degree, he skipped his career fair and made an appointment for seminary. “And it’s been a joy ever since,” he said. The pastoral year at Saint Louis came after four years of study. Seminarian Will next plans to take trips to Israel and Honduras, and then spend a few more months in seminary before expected ordination to the diaconate in 2019 and priesthood in 2020. Mrs. Loontjer thinks Seminarian Will can do great things for God. “He makes a point of personally inviting people into the church. And that personal invitation makes an impact.”
