THE 2016-2017 CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL kicks off
Nov. 5-6. This annual appeal for the Diocese of Austin has some significant changes this year. Look for the colorful new “Living Water” pledge cards in the pews that weekend. Watch for a letter from the Bishop with your personalized pledge card, which can be returned with your pledge at any time, even before the campaign begins. There will be new incentives built into the program this year which will reward your parish with chances to win a $5000 grant for our parish operations. These incentives include meeting our parish goal, an additional challenge goal, and increasing the number of donors per parish…..all of which St. Louis accomplished last year! Won’t you join us in pledging your support for the diocesan ministries that are so necessary for the Church of Central Texas! Even if you can’t pledge a monetary gift, we urge you to fill out a pledge, offering your prayers for the success of the appeal! Your prayer pledge will be counted as parish participation! Your generosity will help our Diocese in the areas of Clergy Formation, Catholic Education, Life-Charity- Justice, Pastoral Ministries, and Spirituality and Worship. Thank you for prayerfully discerning your CSA gift in the coming weeks! NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK IS NOVEMBER 6-12 | The November newsletter has a
“Seminarian Reflection” by our own parish seminarian, Chris Yeager, and the announcement of parishioner Javier Maldonado’s Ordination as Deacon on November 19th! Religious vocations are nurtured within the family and parish community, so join us in ongoing prayer for all vocations, especially our priests and deacons and for all those discerning or in formation. Remember that 50 percent of the funds collected from Catholic Services Appeal are used for the education of our seminarians and the formation and support of our diocesan priests. Please join us in fostering a Culture of Vocations for our Diocese! TRAVELING VOCATIONS CHALICE PROGRAM TO BE LAUNCHED! To
encourage religious vocations, St. Louis Parish will soon be launching this Chalice Program. Each Sunday an assigned family, couple or individual will come forward at the end of a specified Mass to receive the Vocations Chalice and a special prayer written to accompany it. In taking the chalice in behalf of our parish, the household commits to praying that week for the gift of priests, deacons, sisters and brothers in our Diocese. For more information or to sign up, please contact Catholic Vocations Advocates of Austin at CVAATX@gmail.com or parishioner Dona Medlock at donamedlock@msn.com

READER’S CORNER | God’s church has grown because men
and women lived their lives according to Christ’s example. There are the apostles, the earliest group to teach and preach the Gospel, to show us how to live for Christ. Hebrews speaks of these saints, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith…” November is dedicated to the saints. Choose one saint and read of that person who followed the call to live a life for Christ. There are saints from the earliest centuries and there are saints of our time. A variety of books are available from the parish library to learn of these extraordinary individuals.

YOUR ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
made 7 home visits during the week ending on 20 September. We helped four families with their utility bills and three families with rent. One case was that of an Iraqi Christian man who had emigrated to the US 4 years ago and settled in Austin. He had held a job until recently when he was diagnosed with emphysema, and is now on oxygen. All but a few dollars of his disability payment is going to pay his rent, leaving him very little for utilities, car insurance and other expenses. He is wait listed for lower cost housing, but until then he needs financial assistance to avoid homelessness. Because of your support, we were able to pay $200 towards his rent and give him a $20 HEB gift card. We also invited him to visit our food pantry and provided information on other possible sources of financial help. Our volunteers concluded their visit by praying with him in both English and Arabic. It is a bittersweet day at the Society of St Vincent de Paul. Georgette Escutia (pictured on left) joined our ranks in September of 1998, and has worked tirelessly with her visiting partner Julie Sanford. Over the years, this duo has made over 1000 visits to local families in their time of need. But now the time has come for Georgette to retire. Please say a prayer for our neighbors in need of assistance, as the work never ceases. EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES! Mobile
