NEW STAFF – NEW ROLES In September, we were happy to welcome a new Coordinator of Childhood Ministry, Mrs. Ina Alvarado! She will be directing the catechist programs for religious education, pre-K through 8th Grade. Ina is a parishioner at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in northwest Austin and she has been a catechist for five years, also working in campus ministry at St. Dominic Savio High School. She is married to a Deacon Candidate who will be ordained to the Permanent Diaconate this coming March. Ina has accompanied her husband in his formation for the past five years, attending all of his classes and benefitting from the theological studies herself. Ina has already endeared herself to staff, stepping up willingly to direct the kick-off of the catechetical year, when her mentor, Betty Franceschi, had to leave suddenly for her father’s funeral in Venezuela. With her bilingual skills and catechetical experience, Ina has already proven to be a valuable asset to the RE department. Betty Franceschi has also assumed a new role as Director of Hispanic Evangelization for the parish. We are blessed to have her years of experience at St. Louis, as she will be coordinating the majority of Hispanic ministries in the parish as well as continuing to teach for the King’s Institute of Theology in Spanish. Working with Betty, semiretired Sumayah Abullarade, has now taken a new role assisting the priests with the preparation and paperwork for Spanish-speaking couples seeking the Sacrament of Marriage. She will also continue to lead a weekly bible study and coordinate the Rosary Group. Cristian Mendoza has joined our staff as an unpaid intern in youth ministry. Cristian began in early September working closely with Alissa Molina, and he will have very specific tasks during his time with St. Louis. This is a great opportunity for both the youth program and for Cristian as he continues to discern God’ plan for his life. We anticipate he will be with us through December, when he graduates from UT.

PERFECT JOY ACCORDING TO SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI One day in winter, as Saint Francis was going with Brother Leo from Perugia to Saint Mary of the Angels and was suffering greatly from the cold, he called to Brother Leo, who was walking on before him, and said: “Brother Leo, if it were to please God that the Friars Minor (aka “Franciscans”) should give, in all lands, a great example of holiness and edification, write down, and note carefully, that this would not be perfect joy.” A little further on, Saint Francis called to him a second time: “O Brother Leo, if the Friars Minor were to make the lame to walk, if they should make straight the crooked, chase away demons, give sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, speech to the dumb, and, what is even a far greater work, if they should raise the dead after four days, write that this would not be perfect joy.” Shortly after, he cried out again: “O Brother Leo, if the Friars Minor knew all languages; if they were versed in all science; if they could explain all Scripture; if they had the gift of prophecy, and could reveal, not only all future things, but likewise the secrets of all consciences and all souls, write that this would not be perfect joy.” Shortly after, he cried out again: “O Brother Leo, if the Friars Minor had the gift of preaching so as to convert all infidels to the faith of Christ, write that this would not be perfect joy.” When this discourse had lasted for two miles, Brother Leo wondered and, questioning the saint, he asked, “Father, I pray thee teach me wherein is perfect joy.” Saint Francis answered: “If, when we shall arrive at Saint Mary of the Angels, all drenched with rain and trembling with cold, all covered with mud and exhausted from hunger; if, when we knock at the convent-gate, the porter should come angrily and ask us who we are; if, after we have told him, “We are two of the brethren”, he should answer angrily, “What ye say is not the truth; ye are but two impostors going about to deceive the world, and take away the alms of the poor; begone I say”; if then he refuse to open to us, and leave us outside, exposed to the snow and

rain, suffering from cold and hunger till nightfall - then, if we accept such injustice, such cruelty, and such contempt with patience, without being ruffled, and without murmuring, believing with humility and charity that the porter really knows us, and that it is God who maketh him to speak thus against us, write down, O Brother Leo, that this is perfect joy.

Father, I pray thee teach me wherein is perfect joy. And if, urged by cold and hunger, we knock again, calling to the porter and entreating him with many tears to open to us and give us shelter, for the love of God, and if he come out more angry than before, exclaiming, “These are but importunate rascals, I will deal with them as they deserve”; and taking a knotted stick, he seize us by the hood, throwing us on the ground, rolling us in the snow, and shall beat and wound us with the knots in the stick - if we bear all these injuries with patience, charity, and joy, thinking of the sufferings of our Blessed Lord, which we would share out of love for him, write, O Brother Leo, that here, finally, is perfect joy. Above all the graces and all the gifts of the Holy Spirit which Christ grants to his friends, is the grace of overcoming oneself, and accepting willingly, out of love for Christ, all suffering, injury, discomfort, and contempt; for in all other gifts of God we cannot glory, seeing they proceed not from ourselves but from God…. The Secular Franciscans are inspired to follow the Gospel through the life, example, and charisms of St. Francis and St. Clare, both of Assisi. We profess to live the Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order, which was established by St. Francis in the early 1200’s. We are called to live out the Franciscan vocation as married or single people or as diocesan clergy, all sharing in their desire to live the Gospel in the world. We typically gather together on the first Saturday of the month from 8:30 AM until 1 PM at St. Helen’s Catholic Church, Georgetown. Our Gatherings begin with breakfast and fellowship in the St. Rita Activity Center, followed by prayer, meditation, formation and more community time. If you experience a desire to learn more about our way of life, please contact us: stpadrepioofs@gmail.com.

WHAT DOES THE SVDP SOCIETY MEAN TO ME AND TO THE PARISH? Being part of the St. Louis St. Vincent de Paul conference has made real the people that we know are needy. We see them as homeless, people evicted from apartments because they can’t pay the rent, the elderly that can’t pay their utility bills, people in food lines and food pantries, the uninsured, families that live in their cars, people that can’t work because illness or an accident has handicapped them, and abandoned single moms that struggle to work and care for their children. The difficult circumstances experienced by our brothers and sisters are endless. Now here is the magnificent beauty of God’s grace. Because one person, Frederic Ozanam, founder of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, had the vision “to embrace the world in a network of charity,” there are now 600,000+ Vincentians working throughout the world that do charitable works. Like the loaves and fishes, God’s goodness multiplies and spreads to where our neighbors need help and hope. This was made so evident to me by a visit my partner and I made to a single mom who couldn’t pay the rent because she had lost her job. She owed a little over $1,000. We couldn’t pay all her rent. Requests for help with this case were sent out to our neighboring parish conferences and thanks to their response and generosity, the total amount to help this mom was obtained. God’s wants us to be there for the needy and suffering, and he gives us what we need to fulfill this integral part of our Christian calling. We let those whose faith is wavering know that God is present for them and ready to be part of their lives. Our visits, even in a small way, help remind people that God and his church are not far away and always there to help. As parishioners of St. Louis, you are also part Frederic Ozanam’s “network of charity.” It is through your prayers and donations to the St. Louis Conference that help to our needy neighbors is possible. Your participation begins that web that brings God’s good will and hope directly to the people he loves. Your St. Vincent de Paul conference meets every Tuesday at 7pm in the Social Ministries building. Come and visit us to learn more about becoming a Vincentian.

CATHOLICS CARE. CATHOLICS VOTE. PRACTICE CIVIL DIALOGUE.

ST. LOUIS WOMEN

In their statement on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. Catholic bishops remind Catholics that we are called to engage in charitable, respectful and civil dialogue during election season. In a culture dominated by “partisan attacks, sound bites and media hype,” the Church calls for “a different kind of political engagement”.

CELEBRATION for the NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN (NCCW) St. Louis Women’s Club is affiliated with NCCW, an organization that seeks to join together women across parish and diocesan lines to grow in spirituality, leadership and service. St. Louis ladies are among the most active in the local branch, the Austin Deaneries Council of Catholic Women, passing along benefits from NCCW’s programs. To honor the NCCW, Women’s Club active members, in fact all St. Louis lady parishioners, are invited to participate in corporate communion at the 5Pm Saturday Mass on October 13. Learn more about the NCCW at nccw.org or contact parish representative Margie Horton at 512-659-5146.

Visit www.faithfulcitizenship.org to access resources on civil dialogue and on how our faith calls us to engage during election season and beyond.

Reminder: In support of its affiliation with the Council of Catholic Women, St. Louis Women’s Club is collecting new underwear and socks for victims of domestic abuse. Clothing the naked is a Corporal Work of Mercy, and many arrive at the shelter with only the clothes on their back.

SANCTUARY CANDLE MEMORIALS The sanctuary candle is traditionally seen in Catholic churches, burning constantly to indicate the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. At St. Louis, in both the main nave and the chapel, the sanctuary candles are burning high above the floor in beautifully ornate fixtures suspended from the ceiling. Parishioners are given the opportunity to memorialize a deceased loved one with a $10 contribution, selecting a specified week in which one or both of the two sanctuary candles will be burned in their honor. Visit the church office with your donation, the name of your loved one, your choice of sanctuary candle and the selected week. Memorials are denoted in the Main Nave (M) or Chapel (C). Memorials reserved since the last newsletter deadline include: September 30 – October 6 October 21 – 27 To honor Anniversary of Annabelle & Memory of Lucia & Tito Guerrero Jr. by Santos Ocanas by Rita Guerrero (M & C) Rita Guerrero (M & C) October 7 – 13 Memory of Della de Lafuente by Edith de Lafuente (M) Memory of Adolfo de Lafuente by Edith de Lafuente (C)
