Canonization of
Blessed Junipero Serra
3
September 23, 2015
Saints come in all sizes and although Junipero Serra was small of stature (only five feet two inches in height), his impact on the missionary arm of the Catholic Church was immense, particularly in this country. The son of farmers, he was born November 24, 1713, and attended the primary school of the Franciscans in Petra, Spain. He was an avid student, ordained to priesthood in 1738, just 10 years after entering the Convento de Jesus as a novice at the age of 15. He obtained his doctorate in theology in 1742 from the Lullian University in Palma, Spain and was known as a gifted preacher. Father Serra could have pursued a comfortable, successful career as a professor in the civilized academic world of Spain, but he was zealous for the faith and primarily a man of action, who chose to work as a missionary instead. At the age of 35, he left everything behind and boarded a ship bound for Vera Cruz, Mexico. Father Serra landed in Vera Cruz on December 7, 1749, with his friend Francisco Palou. Although horses were supplied for the friars, Serra elected to walk the 250 miles between Vera Cruz and Mexico City, reaching San Fernando College on January 1, 1750. While traveling on foot, infected insect bites caused varicose ulcers on his legs and feet that caused suffering for the rest of his life. In less than six months, Father Serra answered a call for volunteers to the Sierra Gorda missions with the Pame Indians, north of Queretaro. Between 1750 and 1758, he oversaw construction of a church, which is still in use, learned the language of the Pame Indians and translated the catechism into their language. Recalled to the Mexico college of San Fernando in 1758, he became famous as a fervent and effective preacher for missions. He wore many hats on campus as the choir director, master of novices and college counselor and confessor. In 1767, he was appointed superior of the ex-Jesuit missions of Baja California. He resided at the former
Jesuit headquarters in Loreto and assigned missionaries to the 15 missions between San Jose del Cabo in the south and Santa Maria in the north. March 28, 1769, he left the mission at Loreto on mule-back, arriving in San Diego on July 1st. Enroute, he established the mission San Fernando de Velicata. This was the first of twenty-one California missions that Serra would eventually oversee on the west coast as far north as Sonoma. Although suffering greatly from the infirmity in his legs and feet and often carried on a stretcher, Serra devoted the next fifteen years of his life to evangelical work in Upper California. He established nine missions from San Diego (July 16, 1769); San Carlos, Monterey-Carmel (June 3, 1770); San Antonio (July 14, 1771); San Gabriel (September 8, 1771); San Luis Obispo (September 1, 1772); San Francisco (October 9, 1776); San Juan Capistrano (November 1, 1776); Santa Clara (January 12, 1777); and San Buenaventura (March 31, 1782). He was present at the founding of Presidio Santa Barbara (April 12, 1782). After 1770, Father Serra maintained his headquarters at Mission San Carlos, eventually dying there on August 28, 1784 at the age of 70. In spite of intense suffering over the last three years of his life, he had traveled 600 miles in order to confirm 5309 persons, most were Indians who had been baptized in the years since 1770. By the end of 1784, Indian baptisms at the first nine missions had reached 6,736. To the end, Father Junipero Serra remained a man of prayer and had a consuming love for his American converts. He was known for his fortitude, insatiable zeal, self-denial and absolute confidence in God. The cause for Serra’s beatification began in the Diocese of Monterey-Fresno in 1934 and the diocesan process was finished in 1949. On September 25, 1988, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis will canonize Blessed Junipero Serra on September 23, 2015 during a Mass in Washington D.C. Known as the Apostle of California, Serra is held in great esteem in Spain, Mexico and America. He is the subject of several dozen biographies in various languages. His writings with translation have been published in four volumes by Rev. Antonine Tibesar, OFM, and his life and the mission system he established are studied in California schools. tâ itsâ heart,â theâ Eucharistâ isâ aâ sacramentâ ofâ communion,â bringingâ usâ closerâ toâ Godâ andâ toâ ourâ brothersâ andâ sistersâ inâ theâ Bodyâ ofâ Christ.â Ifâ weâ liveâ theâ fruitsâ ofâ theâ Eucharistâ inâ ourâ dailyâ lives,â weâ willâ fiâ llâ ourâ familiesâ andâ ourâ communitiesâ withâ theâ life-givingâ qualitiesâ thatâ theâ Liturgyâ brings:â hospitality,â concernâ forâ theâ poorâ andâ vulnerable,â self-offâ ering,â andâ thanksgiving. SANCTUARY CANDLE MEMORIALS The sanctuary candle is traditionally seen in Catholic churches, burning constantly to indicate the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. At St. Louis, in both the main nave and the chapel, the sanctuary candles are burning high above the floor in beautifully ornate fixtures suspended from the ceiling. Parishioners are given the opportunity to memorialize a deceased loved one with a $10 contribution, selecting a specified week in which one or both of the two sanctuary candles will be burned in their honor.Visit the church office with your donation, the name of your loved Another year is underway and is progressing quite well. This dedicated ministry provides food and comfort to registered parishionerâs families and friends grieving the loss of their loved one. There are several Bereavement teams and each team serves in rotation. Team leaders will call members for food donations to be delivered to a central location. This program is designed so that men can join at anytime and get going quickly. I canât make every meeting. Most participants have to miss some meetings. We all lead busy lives; this unique ministry sets time apart for men to study their faith, meet other parish families, and grow into a deeper relationship with Jesus. Do I need to study anything in advance? No. While this program does compel a desire within men to deepen their knowledge about their faith, it doesnât require advance study prep. The group meets Friday mornings from 6:00 to 7:30 a.m. in Wozniak Hall beginning September 11. The weekly agenda is: 6:00 a.m. â Breakfast 6:15 a.m. â Opening prayer & presentation 7:30 a.m. â Closing prayer & adjourn To register, subscribe to the King's Men list at www.flocknote.com/st-louis. Thanks to St. Louis Womenâs Club
We give thanks and appreciation to the St. Louis Womenâs Club for their kindness in sponsoring a breakfast for the St. Louis Church and School staff during their annual Staff Retreat held on August 6th.
What is it? Women of Faith is a spiritual enrichment group open to adult women of all ages who want to stimulate their minds and nourish their faith through group study in a casual, friendly setting. We pray together, discuss the content presented or assigned for that meeting. This marks the fourth year since Women of Faith began. New attendees are welcomed joyfully. Why should I attend Women of Faith? Good spiritual reading helps us more fully understand Godâs love and mercy. When we stop learning, our faith becomes stagnant. Women of Faith exists to provide a setting where women inspire each other. Everyone is in a different place in their faith journey, but like any road trip, the people you meet along the way can make the experience more beautiful. What is the cost? There is no cost, except to buy your own book, when a book is part of the program. The A.M. group gathers for breakfast, and everyone volunteers throughout the year to bring food.

Womenâs Spirituality Small Group Please join us for our new book study starting in the fall, Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, This is a 10 week book and DVD study. You will receive an electronic version of the study guide that we will follow each week. The life of a woman today isnât really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lordâs feet, but the daily demands of a busy world just wonât leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him⌠yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy. Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World is not just a book â now embraced by hundreds of thousands of women â but an invitation for every woman whoâs ever felt she isnât godly enough, isnât loving enough, isnât doing enough. Please contact Elissa Fox foxfamilyaustin@gmail.com or Mary Beth Trak mbtrak@aol.com for information and to signup. Meetings are Wednesday evenings, 7pm â 9pm starting September 16 in the Parish Education Center (PEC) Library.
Family
Rosary Night
October 7, marks the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, and October is dedicated to the rosary. This is a wonderful time to grow in devotion to Mary as the Queen of the Rosary. Through the mysteries of the rosary we come to know and love our Lord and Savior. Pope John Paul II wrote in his encyclical Rosarium Virginis Mariae : âAs a prayer for peace, the Rosary is also, and always has been, a prayer of and for the family. [âŚ] We need to return to the practice of family prayer and prayer for families, including the Rosary. [âŚ] The Holy Rosary, by age-old tradition, has shown itself particularly effective as a prayer which brings the family together. [âŚ] The family that recites the Rosary together reproduces something of the atmosphere of the household of Nazareth.â (n. 41) Whether you pray the rosary daily or have never prayed it at all, whether you are married or single, whether you have children or not, please join our parish family as we kick off our monthly Family Rosary Night and potluck this October. More details to come with dates, time and location.

Edith Stein: The Seventh Chamber, movie on DVD, written and directed by Marta Meszaros. This is a moving, artistic portrayal of the life of Jewish philosopher, Catholic convert and Carmelite martyr, Edith Stein, capturing the interior struggles of this extraordinary woman. Deeply influenced by the writings of St. Teresa of Avila, she joined the Carmelites and took the name of Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, and was put to death in Auschwitz in 1942, and canonized by John Paul II in 1998. The movie is in Italian, with subtitles in English and Spanish.
The Vanishing Footprints, by Lois Walfrid Johnson. This Adventures of the Northwoods series book involves the search for stolen money and for the thief. When Kate, Anders, and Erik attempt to solve the mystery they are plunged into even bigger problems. The young reader will be captivated until the last page.
Roasted Peanuts, by Tim Egan. Sam and Jackson both agreed: nothing beat baseball. Sam was an amazing athlete. Jackson, on the other hand, was not. He could throw very far, but that was about it. When Sam makes the team and Jackson doesnât, he misses having Jackson there on the field with him. And then he sees a poster: "Wanted. Peanut Vendor. Must Throw Well." How can he convince Jackson to take the job? Tim Egan has crafted a quirky tale of friendship and loyalty, complete with a late-inning nail biter that will keep baseball fans on the edge of their seats!

Saint Dominic and the Rosary, by Catherine Beebe. The author presents a dramatic account of the life of Saint Dominic, the "Athlete of Christ." As a boy he sold his books to feed the poor and offered himself as ransom for a prisoner. As a young priest he walked from town to town and preached the word of God and the power of the Holy Rosary. The work of the thousands of Dominican priests and sisters all over the world stands today, seven centuries later, as a living memorial to the sanctity of their founder.
