THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS a weekly bulletin & newsletter September 2, 2018 • 22 nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
V Encuentro – Witnessing God’s Love at St. Louis The V Encuentro is an initiative of the USCCB that is taking place across the United States. It’s a process of missionary activity, consultation, leadership development and pastoral discernment in all parishes and dioceses. Our team at St. Louis has been working for over a year on the process and is now ready to start acting on growing presence, gifts, and potential of the Hispanic community here at the parish. The theme of the V Encuentro is “Missionary Disciples: Witnesses of God’s Love.” The goal is to engage Catholics to become missionary disciples and to witness God’s love to the world. It is a time of grace for Catholics in the United States to renew our faith and respond to the call to the New Evangelization as we reach out more intentionally to our Hispano/Latino brothers and sisters in our midst.
entire St. Louis family for a day of fun, games and food! The free event will start at 10am and go until 2pm. We will have food for sale from several ministries, and games in the fields and the gym. Make plans to bring your entire family. The annual “Los Posadas” take place each December 16th thru December 24th here at St. Louis. Ministries from both cultures will host a night as the Holy Family looks for a place to stay each night. Each evening will have a bilingual program, so all can follow the amazing story of the birth of Jesus. One of the highlights of Lent at our parish is the annual Via Crucis pageant. This year all the different Stations of the Cross will be narrated in Spanish and English. Make this your way of remembering the Passion of Jesus this Good Friday, April 19th.

Albert Haase, OFM, a popular preacher and spiritual director, will present this retreat. The cost is $225 for a private room, $180 for a shared room and $100 for commuters. To register go to www.cedarbrake.org or contact them at cedarbrake@austindiocese.org or 254780-2436.
BEING A VINCENTIAN In previous articles we have described the activities of the Society of St. Vincent dePaul here at St. Louis Parish. The process of receiving requests from those in need, deciding how, at our weekly meetings, to allocate the funds provided by you, our fellow parishioners, and the visits to our neighbors are all part of a process engaged in by over 600,000 Vincentians in 131 countries around the world. It all started 175 years ago when a young student at the Sorbonne, in Paris, answered the call of the Holy Spirit to live his faith in a particular way by serving the poor. The growth of the Society over the years is testament to the influence of the Holy Spirit when one person responds. Today we describe what makes being a Vincentian so special, and, in many ways unique. The three essential elements of the Society are: To bear witness to Christ and the Christian faith by working for the poor; bringing together men and women to love God in the person of others; and establishing personal contact between Vincentians and those who suffer to provide charitable aid. What makes the Society unique, however, is that its primary focus is the spiritual growth of its members. The path to achieving this is through our daily contact and identification with the poor. To quote St. Vincent DePaul, our patron: “God loves those who love the poor.” Our mission, therefore, is a means to personal holiness. Christ presents Himself to us as a neighbor who faces eviction, a utility cut-off; or a single parent with several children in need of food or clothing. Perhaps their situation seems insurmountable to them. Each is an opportunity and a privilege for Vincentians to help a neighbor resolve an issue – and to experience together the Lord’s presence during our visit. Unlike other charitable organizations that require a visit from the client, we visit them. And, as representatives of the parishioners of St. Louis, we share your love and help through your support in the Social Ministries Collections. In a very real sense, in attending to the needy and suffering, a Vincentian is administering to Jesus Christ Himself. As you read this, please consider it an invitation to join us and experience the special grace of Vincentian spirituality as a member of the Society of St. Vincent dePaul here at St. Louis Church.

SANCTUARY CANDLE MEMORIALS The sanctuary candle is traditionally seen in Catholic churches, burning constantly to indicate the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. At St. Louis, in both the main nave and the chapel, the sanctuary candles are burning high above the floor in beautifully ornate fixtures suspended from the ceiling. Parishioners are given the opportunity to memorialize a deceased loved one with a $10 contribution, selecting a specified week in which one or both of the two sanctuary candles will be burned in their honor. Visit the church office with your donation, the name of your loved one, your choice of sanctuary candle and the selected week. Memorials are denoted in the Main Nave (M) or Chapel (C). Memorials reserved since the last newsletter deadline include: August 26 – September 1 September 16 – 22 In memory of Miguelito Herrera In memory of Israel Garcia by Virginia Jaramillo (M) by Alice Garcia (M) September 2 – 8 In memory of Gilbert Saenz by Alyce Lottman (M) In memory of Judith & Barbara Vrazel by Ed & Kathy Burshnick( C) September 9 – 15 In memory of Maria Esther Jaquez by Rocio Garcia (M)
