ANNUAL REPORT ST. LOUIS CATHOLIC SCHOOL FORMING CHILDREN IN W I S D O M A N D H O L I N E SS

he glory of God is the human person fully alive” -St. Ireneaus of Lyon

Dear Friends of St. Louis Catholic School, Catholic schools are the place where the human person, God’s masterpiece in all of creation, is able to become what God intended. St. Ireneaus of Lyon (A.D. 202) once wrote that the glory of God is the human person fully alive. This is why Catholic schools exist and it is what we at St. Louis see as a sacred ministry. When children grow in wisdom and holiness, they become fully alive. When they learn about mathematics and science, they become fully alive. When they write poetry and short stories and study history and world cultures, they become fully alive. When they create works of art and sing or play music, they become fully alive. When they develop skills of public speaking and engage the scientific method, they become fully alive. When they participate in athletics, they become fully alive and most importantly, when they worship God, celebrate the Sacraments and study theology, they come to know who they are and at the same time whose they are. This work of God happens every day at St. Louis Catholic School and, as such, we are more than an academic enterprise. St. Louis School is a place where the whole person is formed in the most complete image and likeness of God. As Catholics we remain proudly pro-life. Helping young people become fully alive is definitely a pro-life ministry. This year our outstanding Principal, Cindy Gee, gathered over forty stakeholders of St. Louis School, creating our five-

year strategic plan. The plan engages all aspects of SLCS from academics to Catholic identity to facilities to governance to marketing to enrichment programs, all of which strive to prepare our students as the leaders our world needs not just tomorrow, but certainly today. The strategic plan is a significant achievement and will serve us as we bring St. Louis Catholic School into the future. As you know, this important work of SLCS requires resources like outstanding teachers, modern equipment and technology tools, effective facilities, and of course funding. The Annual Fund is your way to help us help God in his vision for these young people. Part of the Catholic school ethos is to make Catholic education affordable for anyone who desires it. Because of this, we charge less tuition than the actual cost to educate each child. The difference between the tuition and the actual cost is called the gap. This is where you come in to the equation. We need you to help us bridge this gap through our Annual Fund. Participating in Catholic education is quite simply part of being a Catholic and joining us in this important work is a vote of confidence for the mission of St. Louis Catholic School. May God bless you for your generosity! Gratefully,

Fr. James A. Misko, Pastor

Dear Family and Friends, St. Louis Catholic School continues a strong tradition of educating children in the light of Christ. Our mission is to provide our students with the knowledge and skills they need to be leaders. This must be done in a world that is changing exponentially. We are educating children in our school for a world that we cannot even imagine. They must be prepared to lead with the light of Christ. This is the ten-year anniversary of the iPhone. Think back on how this one device has changed our daily lives. Then think about how this is just ONE example of the technological advances made in our world. Then think what 2030 will be like when our youngest students are entering college or when our older students are entering the workforce. What is St. Louis Catholic School’s responsibility to this changing, evolving world? We must provide an education for our children that embraces the new, but holds dear to the traditions established by Christ and our Church Fathers. Catholic Schools provide religious and moral formation in a world desperately in need of Gospel values. We are preparing leaders and citizens that will secure our society.

Research indicates that Catholic schools help build a better society. • Graduates of Catholic high schools are more likely to vote. • Graduates of Catholic high schools are more likely to earn high wages. • Catholic Schools tend to produce graduates who are more civically engaged, more tolerant of diverse views, and more committed to service as adults (Campbell, 2001; Wolf, Greene, Kleitz and Thalhammer 2001).

As you can see Catholic schools are vitally important to the world’s future. This year at St. Louis, we set into action a new five-year strategic plan designed to move our mission forward. We strive to create the type of environment that produces critical thinkers who act with virtue. Providing a relevant education increases the cost for all students. For the Parochial school student this cost falls on the shoulders of the parent. Our world needs our children to have a school that creates more than the adequate, we must provide the best. To do this and remain affordable to our parents we must raise funds to make up the difference in the actual cost. This annual fund appeal attempts to do that. However, this appeal must reach further than our parents. It must reach to others in our society because the mission of St. Louis Catholic School is not simply to provide a quality school for our children, it is to provide a quality society for our future. Please join us in spreading this message to others. Respectfully, Cindy R. Gee, M.Ed., Principal S T. LO U IS C AT H O LI C SCH O O L AN N UAL R EPO R T

STRATEGIC PLAN PROCESS The purpose of this strategic plan is to provide a path leading to academic excellence for our students, while maintaining an environment based on strong Catholic values. The creation of this plan was a comprehensive process that was initiated in the fall of 2016. It was a collaborative process involving the voices of administrators, school board, faculty, staff, students, parents, and parish members. It is our mission as a Catholic school to form our students in wisdom and holiness. In developing this plan St. Louis Catholic School will effectively continue its long standing legacy to provide an excellent Catholic Education for students in the greater Austin area.

CRITICAL FIRST YEAR OBJECTIVES

Fully integrate the parish and school toward a single mission focusing on opportunities to grow in faith through the sacraments, Christian Service, and an educational experience infused with the Catholic faith in all subject areas. Provide evidence-based staff development for teachers so they may implement high quality, hands-on lessons across subject areas based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.

Develop a comprehensive plan that allows for continuous improvement of school facilities and grounds ensuring a safe and secure environment. Enhance the reputation and knowledge of St. Louis Catholic School to prospective students, donors, and members of the community.

MOVING FORWARD The Strategic Plan committee and Leadership team at SLCS will continually monitor the status of implantation of the objectives identified for each school year. Stakeholders will receive an update on the progress made toward achievement of the goals and annual objectives stated in the strategic plan. Ongoing data analysis will be undertaken by the school administration and Advisory Council in order to ensure that the plan remains realistic and responsive to any changes.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE PSIA PSIA is best described as “competitive test taking” for those in grades 1-8. Events include art, public speaking, math, science, and more. St. Louis students entered into the competition for the first time in the 2015-2016 school year, and have had much success with the program. This year, 10 students represented SLCS in 13 events at the State level, and 2 students placed in the top 10!

service project was to collect books for the Dell Children’s Medical Center Half Pint Library. With their service and leadership, over 300 books were collected and delivered to the library. The chapter looks forward to inducting new members in the fall and starting a new service project.

T E C H N O LO G Y With iPads in PreK through second grades and Chromebooks in third through eighth grades, technology is available to all students in the school. With the recent addition of four Promethean boards adding large-format touchscreen interactivity to classroom learning, St. Louis is at the forefront of technology in the classroom.

With the belief that hands-on learning in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) enriches the classroom experience for students, our library has taken on a major endeavor of creating a Makerspace. With a multifaceted approach to robotics, coding, circuitry, engineering, and creative use, the library hopes to reach students at all grade levels. The library will also be purchasing a 3D printer to provide students with an expanded ability to prototype, craft, and take school projects to the next level.

The St. Louis Catholic School Student Council serves as the student government for our school. The officers and representatives are elected from grades 6th-8th and serve oneyear terms. Student Council members receive leadership training throughout the year in keeping with our school’s mission statement.

THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW ART This year, veteran art teacher Pilar Castrejon, curated a children’s exhibit for the Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC). Students in grades 2-8 participated in this event. One exhibit featured mixed media projects inspired by quotes discovered through their involvement in Artists in Society program. Some other highlights from our Art program included the 4th grade “Body in Motion” paintings, a project united with an 8-week interpretive dance program that the class participated in. Pre-K and Kindergarten students created elaborate “creature sculptures” using wood pieces, glue, timing,

and gravity. Middle school students, as well as 3rd and 5th grade students, also visited to Blanton Museum of Art to view work that they had been analyzing in their art classes.

AT H L E T I C S Students in grades 5-8 are able to compete with the Austin Inter-Parochial League. Our athletic program emphasizes the development of skills through hard work, sportsmanship, and cooperation. We offer volleyball, cross country, flag football, cheerleading, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, and track & field.
