Belle Epoque. La belle epoch (the beautiful age) refers broadly to the years between 1884 and 1914. Kandersteg turns the clock back to this era each year at the end of January. Immerse yourself in sophisticated etiquette, elegant clothes, and original winter sports. Stroll along wintery pavements and be received in businesses and restaurants by appropriately dressed employees. Admire transformed shop façades reminiscent of the good old days.
2023 BELLE EPOQUE WEEK WILL TAKE PLACE UNDER THE HEADING "FASHION AND STYLE".
Discover lots of fascinating facts about the fashion, style and hairstyles of this bygone era at various locations around town. As usual, this much-loved event will officially start at Bahn hofmatte. Visitors wearing peri od costume are welcome to join the grand promenade without pre-registration.

Here, cross country skiers of any ability will find their ideal trail. Seven circular trails in Kandersteg are available for winter sports lovers. The routes are freshly prepared every day and their operational status is in our Winter Sports Report.
Kandersteg cross country skiing trails
Directly from your hotel or apartment onto the trail – the cross country ski trail network runs right through the middle of the village and en ables cross country skiers to begin outside their front doors. A description and over
prepared at Sunnbüel (1936 m/6352 ft. above sea level). The Spittelmatte cross country ski trail lies at the foot of Mt. Altels and offers breathtaking views of the Alpine landscape.

WINTER HIKING
In our mountain world, you will find different, well-pre pared winter hiking trails. The historic Gemmi Pass route from Sunnbüel towards Leukerbad is particularly impres sive. At Lake Oeschinen, you can also experience our unique Alpine landscape.
Lake Oeschinen, Ice Walk
In the Lake Oeschinen area, the winter hiking trail from the top station of the gondola to the lake is prepared as a circu lar hiking trail. On this impres sive glacial lake, there are two si gnposted circular walks of 30 and 90 minutes in length. Watch the ice fishermen on this large surface and enjoy some peace and quiet at the foot of Blümlisalp. N.B.: The hiking trail from Kandersteg to Lake Oeschinen is closed to winter hikers in both directions (danger of collision on the sledge run and ski piste).
Sunnbüel
This 8,5 km winter hiking trail along the historic Gemmi Pass route begins at the top station of the Sunnbüel cable car. The open area of Spittelmatte with rugged mountain peaks all around is a breathtaking sight. The trail continues to the charming Schwarenbach Mountain Hotel and finally to Lake Dauben and the Gemmi Pass. The «Altelsblick» circular hiking trail is an atternative option.
Blausee
The pearl of the Kander Valley is well worth a visit in winter too. Crystal-clear «Blue Lake» lies in the middle of a fairy tale-like forest landscape and is a true source of inspiration. The hotel, restaurant and na ture park also offer visitors various activities and experi ences during the winter months.

Sunnbüel Circular Tours
Two well-signposted snowshoe trails begin at the Sunnbüel top station and take you to some of the best vantage points away fr om the slopes. The shorter 2,2 km trail leads in the direction of «Stock» and offers sp ectacular views of the Gasterntal Valley. The longer 4,8 km trail runs beside S pittelmatte and the flank of Mt. Altels.
Oeschiwald, Kandersteg
This 1 km sledge run in Oeschiwald (part of Kander steg) is a delight for the whole family. During the winter season, it is floodlit every day from 6pm–10pm.
Höh Panorama Tours Kandersteg
This 90-minute snowshoe tour starts directly behind Kandersteg railway station an d leads to the elevation of Höh-Wald forest. From this bea utiful vantage point, the view opens down towards th e mountain village.
