Sanchez

BY KELLIE RYAN

In mid-June, the Athletics’ organization acquired right-handed pitcher Jake Sanchez in a trade, sending outfielder Michael Taylor to the White Sox. Since the trade, Sanchez has been a solid starter for the Ports and is second in the wins column with a 7-1 record. “Our coaching staff does a great job with scouting reports. Also, with the defense we have, I just have to keep trusting our guys and just sticking to the game plan,” explains Sanchez on how he plans to keep the momentum going. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Chicago White Sox in 2013, Sanchez was honored with numerous awards, including Pitcher of the Year and Post-Season All-Star for the Pioneer League (Advanced Rookie League) in 2013. With the Great Falls Voyagers, he earned a 6-3 record with a 2.87 ERA. After being promoted to the Kannapolis Intimidators (Class A) in the beginning of the 2014 season, Sanchez acquired a 5-4 record and 2.80 ERA and was selected as a South Atlantic League Mid-Season All-Star before getting sent to Stockton. “We have a great group of guys here, so it was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be,” says Sanchez of his transition to Stockton. With Sanchez’s solid numbers, he is sure to be a pitcher the Ports can count on as the playoff run intensifies.

Season Ticket Holder Spotlight

BY TIM POLLACK

The Jackson Family The Jackson Family (Edward, Renee, Christopher & Evan) have been Season Ticket Holders since 2007 but have been Ports fans and regular attendees at old Billy Hebert Field for many years. Their decision to become Season Ticket Holders came in 2007 after the birth of their second son. With the entire family enjoying baseball, they couldn’t think of a better place to spend their summer evenings and quality family time. The Jacksons’ first experience as Ports fans vary for each member of the family as Edward remembers attending games in the 70’s as a member of his baseball team, the Babe Ruth All Stars. Some of Rene’s favorite memories of attending games come from being a teacher and bringing her students to D.A.R.E field trips at Billy Hebert Field. Like a lot of other Season Ticket Holders, Edward claims the 2008 California League Championship season as his favorite season to date. They really enjoyed witnessing the team progress throughout the season, including their favorite player, Chris Carter. Carter was the main star of the 2008 season and helped lead the Ports to the Championship with his 39 home runs and 104 RBIs on the season. When speaking of Carter, Renee says “Home run or Strike Out” as he also struck out 156 times that season. 2008 was also the year when the Jacksons purchased most of their Ports jerseys that they still wear to the games today. Renee says her favorite season is next season, as she is always looking forward to the next year and what new players will be here to help create more memories for her family. When asked about what they enjoy most about attending Ports games as Season Ticket Holders, Edward and Renee very simply stated that it is “good, clean family fun” and that they really enjoy making connections with other Scout Season Ticket Holders in the Scout A section. You can find the Jackson family at the ballpark on most nights throughout the summer. For games that they cannot attend they like to give their tickets out to friends and charities. The Stockton Ports would like to thank the Jackson Family for their continued support and loyalty as Season Ticket Holders! 9

Bash Brothers 2.0 Matt Olson and Renato Nunez Chase Ports Home Run History

In the late 80’s and early 90’s, a duo of young Oakland A’s players captured the attention of the Bay Area, smashing home runs at will. That duo, known as the “Bash Brothers”, was compiled of A’s sluggers Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco. More than 20 years later, a new duo of young up and coming A’s hopefuls are bringing back the magic that captured the hearts of Athletics fans everywhere. Ports first baseman (2nd overall A’s prospect) Matt Olson and third baseman Renato Nunez (3rd overall A’s prospect) are slugging their way into the Ports history books. As of Monday, August 4th, the tag-team duo has smashed a total of 59 home runs and are currently ranked number one and two respectively, in the California League for home runs (Olson has 32 and Nunez has 27). With Nunez’s 27th home run on Friday, August 1st, the Venezuelan born third baseman put the Bash Brothers 2.0 in the Ports history books. Before the 2014 season began, the record for most home runs in a season by a Ports duo was set by 2008 players Chris Carter and Sean Doolittle with a total of 57 home runs. That season, Carter went on to pass the Ports’ single season home run record with 39 homers. The Ports currently post a 65-48 record, good for second overall in the California League on top of a 28-15 second half record, good for a first place standing by 3.0 games. Much of the success can attributed to Olson and Nunez’s high-powered offense which has helped the Ports power through a long season of baseball.

10

Nunez has been automatic since the All-Star break, posting a slash line of 331/.383/.726 with 18 homers and 52 RBI. With already impressive numbers, when you compare that to the 9 home runs and 29 RBI he posted in the first 60 games of the season, the progress is eye popping.

BY TAYLOR MCCARTHY While Olson’s batting average of .255 could always use some room for improvement, the Georgia born prospect’s on base percentage of .399 and 95 total walks are beyond impressive. Olson has also placed himself in prime position to break Chris Carter’s home run record. With 27 games remaining in the regular season, Olson needs just 7 home runs to tie the record, and 8 to pass it, something that very easily could be obtained. Both prospects are just twenty years of age and show a promising future that has excited fans from the Central Valley to the East Bay. As quoted by MiLB.com, Ports manager Ryan Christenson who managed both players last season in Beloit sees a competitive but friendly nature between both players. “I definitely think that they do feed off of each other, they have a great friendship and competitive relationship when it comes to that. I think they feed off of each other, and it pushes their performance up a notch because of it.” While many Ports fans are excited at the possibility of ending a two year playoff drought, many will also be excited at the prospect of seeing one, if not both, players become a part of Ports history. With Matt Olson just ahead of Chris Carter’s 2008 home run pace, he has a legitimate shot at taking the home run crown for the Ports. Nunez however, has kept a steady pace with his counterpart and has demonstrated his power each night. While it has been several years since fans got a chance to witness the raw power of McGwire and Canseco, Olson and Nunez are certainly making enough noise on their paths to the big leagues, something A’s fans will be sure to take notice of.

Graphic Breakdown

BY MARK FANTA

With the Ports’ season winding down, this is a perfect time to breakdown and explain how some of the graphics were built. The example right below shows one of Ports most frequently used graphics. It is shown on the videoboard, website, Facebook & Twitter pages, Gamedays, and much more.

All complex graphics are created with layers, and no, I am not talking about layers like in a delicious layered cake or jello dish, although they are very similar. Creating graphics with layers allows designers to move different graphics or objects around with ease. It makes it easy to create overlapping effects. The layers make it easy to place different Ports players behind the ballpark skyline and in front of the background. An example of this is in each edition of the Gameday located behind the $25 Giveaway page. Each edition has a different player. The example below shows how there are five layers that make up the one graphic. Typically, the front layer is the skyline and the back layer(s) which consists of the background color and stars. The text or players get placed on layers between the skyline and background layers to ensure they are behind the skyline but infront of the stars and sky.

Top Prospects

BY MAX BOCHMAN

After the passing of the 2014 trade deadline on July 31st, much of the national attention has been on the Oakland Athletics. They were able to add three premier starters to their rotation and have positioned themselves to make a run into deep October. And while Major League contenders tend to sacrifice some of their prospects in order to land big impact players, the Ports seem to have come away with minimal damage. The Ports are currently leading the California League in standings for the season. The only player they lost from any of the trades made by the A’s was outfielder Billy McKinney, and they are still loaded with many of the top prospects within the organization. As of this writing, the Ports have eleven of the A’s top twenty prospects on their roster. This includes Daniel Robertson, Matt Olson, and Renato Nunez who are the top three prospects respectively. They’ve also enjoyed the services of Tucker Healy and Bruce Maxwell before they were promoted, who are also on the top twenty list. Looking at the success these players have experienced so far this season, it’s easy to understand why they are so highly regarded. With the kind of success these prospects are experiencing right now, some fans may be concerned that more players would be promoted this year before they get to the postseason. Fortunately, early promotions do not seem to be a trend under A’s general manager Billy Beane. Last year, Ports’ fans were able to experience a full season of Addison Russell, then the A’s top prospect, who produced numbers that certainly could have warranted a promotion. Beane however, never made any kind of promotion until the Ports failed to make the playoffs, at which point he gave Russell a brief stint with the Triple-A Rivercats as they, themselves, were in the midst of a postseason run. If there’s any kind of trend, it appears that Beane is attempting to build a championship team not only in Oakland, but also in Stockton. With the recent promotion of pitching prospect Bobby Wahl, Ports’ fans will get to witness a player many believed to be a first-round caliber talent just in time for the playoffs. Wahl was always heralded as a big-time prospect, as he was drafted but ultimately unsigned out of high school. After experiencing success at Ole Miss, he was thought to be a first round pick until blister issues diminished his velocity for his final amateur season, and he was finally taken by the A’s in the fifth round in 2013, which many thought to be a steal. Hopefully he can enjoy the same success as other top prospects in Stockton, and help make 2014 a season to remember.
