june outlook
by maxwell bochman
Heading into June, the Ports are currently residing in third place. They’ve been in a heated battle for second place with the Modesto Nuts while also trying to fend off the suddenly hot San Jose Giants. While they haven’t been able to contend so far this year with the North Division Leader Visalia Rawhide, there is still plenty of reason for optimism regarding the 2015 Ports. The first reason for this team to be optimistic is that they were in a very similar position last year. In the first half of the season, they finished in second place only a game above the Rawhide and three games above the Giants. They also finished eight games back of the Blaze for the division lead. There are certainly similarities. After the All-Star break last year, the Ports took off. They went 48-22 to finish out the year, leading the division in the second half by nine games as they clinched a playoff berth. A similar fate could very well be in store for this Ports squad. The roster makeup of both last year’s team and this year’s also presents its similarities. Heading into 2014, only four players were on the roster that had played more than 30 games for the 2013 Ports. In 2015 only one player remains from the 2014 squad and that is Beau Taylor. With complete roster turnover such as that, it can be difficult for the new players to get adjusted as most of them are often experiencing High-A baseball for the first time in their careers. That was apparent last year as once the players became more comfortable they took off in the second half. As the 2015 Ports continue to adjust to California League pitching, their season could certainly begin to take off. A different set of circumstances may also bode well for the 2015. Last year as the Ports were battling for a playoff berth, the Oakland A’s were in their own battle. Unfortunately for Ports fans, the Major League team was priority number one for general manager Billy Beane. While the A’s made their run they traded for pieces that could put them over the hump in the playoffs. Deals for Cubs pitchers Jason Hammel and Jeff Samardzija and for White Sox slugger Adam Dunn ultimately cost some important pieces for the Ports. Top prospect Billy Mckinney was shipped off to the Cubs and their south side counterparts received Ports pitcher Nolan Sanborn in exchange for Dunn. While it helped the A’s reach the playoffs, it cost several pieces that might have led to a championship for the Ports. This year, the circumstances are almost completely flipped. The A’s have underperformed mostly due to injuries to players they were counting on. Heading into the third month of the season, the A’s are currently in the basement of the AL West. And while the players aren’t performing the way they were predicted to at the beginning of the season, they still have talented players, most of which are very attractive to other teams with higher chances of making the playoffs. While last year saw Ports players being shipped off, this year could see new Ports players arriving as the return for some of these Major League players being traded. Another reason to be optimistic is that with the Sacramento River Cats changing affiliations this season, the Ports are now the only A’s affiliate in California. This can and has led to more rehab stints in Stockton. So far this season, the Ports have already hosted Sean Doolittle, Eric O’Flaherty, Drew Pomeranz, Josh Reddick, and Coco Crisp. Even though injuries are hard to predict and never worth hoping for, these big leaguers almost certainly contribute to the Ports while they are here. From the mentoring of these young players, to the actual on-field performance, their presence can never be understated. For all of these reasons, Ports fans should feel good about their team heading into June. Baseball is a long a season and as these players continue to grow and get accustomed to the next step in their career, they’ll only continue to be more productive here at Banner Island Ballpark.

CATCHING UP WITH DARREN BUSH
by taylor mccarthy
In the six seasons that have passed since the Ports claimed their 11th California League Championship, the A’s organization, as well as the Ports, has seen some changes on the managerial side of things. Darren Bush, the Ports’ manager of the 2008 Cal League Champion Stockton Ports, has certainly made a name for himself in his time since moving on from Stockton. Bush currently serves as the hitting coach for the Oakland Athletics, the Ports recently had a time to catch up with Bush and talk about his experience in Stockton. How long were you with the Ports? I was there for four seasons, two years as a hitting coach and two years as a manager. I was actually there the first game that was played at Banner Island Ballpark. I remember it was April 1st and there was no field and no lights. We went on the road for 21 days and when we came back we saw this beautiful ball park, it was amazing. I remember we were thinking before we left for our road trip that there was no way the stadium was going to be ready but sure enough when we came back for our first home game on April 28th, it was ready and looked great. What was the experience like managing the 2008 championship team? It was great, we had a lot of quality players on that club, and a lot of those guys are still playing with several being in the major leagues. It was a lot of fun being with those guys, for a lot of people it was their first championship including Pat (Ports President Pat Filippone), so it was a great experience. Do you still keep an eye on what is going on in Stockton? I definitely know what’s going on in Stockton and keep tabs on our guys, being that it is such an integral part of our organization. I’ve known Ports President Pat Filippone for years, ever since he was a GM for a club that I played on so for me I kind of have an interest in what’s going on in Stockton just seeing how he’s doing and how the organization is doing overall. This year the Ports are celebrating the 10th anniversary of Banner Island Ballpark, in the four seasons you coached here, did you have a favorite moment? That’s a tough question; there were so many great moments over the years that I coached at Banner Island Ballpark including the Opening Night game in 2005. The year we won the championship in 2008, we won the first two games at home and that was nice winning those in front of our fans and then of course going on and winning that championship in Lancaster. That was pretty special to me, getting a chance to win those games in front of our home crowd.

player profile: FRANKLIN BARRETO
by TAYLOR MCCARTHY
In 2013, it seemed destined that the Ports’ shortstop and current Chicago Cubs’ rookie Addison Russell would be the future middle infielder for the Oakland Athletics. After a midsummer trade in 2014 involving former Ports Billy McKinney, Dan Strailey, and Russell being traded to the Cubs for Jason Hammel and Jeff Samardzija, that outlook quickly changed. After the trade, Daniel Robertson quickly took over the A’s number one overall prospect spot, a position he thrived on. Robertson finished the season hitting .310 with 15 home runs and 60 RBI and appeared to be the next shortstop of the future for the A’s. The Athletics, however, had different plans. Once again another big trade occurred that had A’s fans all over the country surprised. All-Star third baseman and former Stockton Ports star Josh Donaldson was dealt to the Blue Jays for four players including current Ports shortstop Franklin Barreto. After the trade, Robertson was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays along with teammate and 2014 Port Boog Powell for Ben Zobrist and Yunel Escobar, making Barreto the next shortstop the A’s had big plans for. At just 19 years old, Franklin Barreto was arguably the key piece to trading Josh Donaldson to the Toronto Blue Jays, a player deemed as “untouchable” around Oakland A’s inner circles. At only 5’9”, Barreto was on international scouts’ radars before signing in July of 2012 with the Blue Jays organization at only 17 years old. In Barreto’s first full season of Minor League Baseball, the shortstop put up a slash line of .311/.384/.481 playing in the Northwest League for the Vancouver Canadians. In 328 plate appearances, Barreto also put up solid power numbers with a total of six home runs and 61 runs batted in. Known as a natural hitter by scouts all around Major League Baseball, Barreto has a knack for getting on base and even complimented his high on base percentage with a total of 29 stolen bases in 2014. Barreto has also proven to have a solid glove in the infield, with many executives believing he could serve his role as either a shortstop or a second baseman for the A’s. While many see the young star as a player with raw talent, Barreto is still very young with a possible MLB arrival by 2017. His raw talent and inexperience in professional baseball certainly showed at the beginning of the 2015 season. While Barreto at times was able to make amazing plays in the infield, the young prospect struggled to be consistent and committed unnecessary errors. That has quickly changed as Barreto has continued to show improvement with his glove and has been one of the Ports’ best infielders at the approach the half-way point of the season. Barreto’s bat was another piece to his game that was slow to come around this season as he spent most of the first month batting below .200. As of May 27th, he has managed to raise his average to .257 and has been on a tear throughout the month of May, which included multiple three-hit games and a two home run and 5 RBI night on May 18th against the Modesto Nuts. Through 19 games in April, Barreto was batting .171, a testament to the 19-year old’s strong rebound.
