ports playoff hunt
by taylor mccarthy
As of Wednesday, August 19th, the 2015 Stockton Ports hold a mere one game playoff lead over bay area nemesis San Jose Giants. At 61-60, the Ports are currently in third place in the California League North Division. This means that if the Ports maintain this position at the conclusion of the 2015 season, they would qualify for the playoffs for the third and final spot, aka the wild card. How did the Ports get here? The way the California League playoff picture works can be broken down into three segments: the first-half division winners, the second-half division winners, and the wild card (overall record). At the conclusion of the first-half of the season, the team with the best record in each division (California League North and California League South) is crowned first-half champions and clinches a playoff spot along with a first round bye. The Visalia Rawhide accomplished this feat in 2015 by finishing 42-28. In doing so, the Rawhide now have a first round bye in the playoffs. With the start of the second-half of the season, all the teams in each division essentially get a clean slate and records start over. At the conclusion of the season, the team with the best record in the second half of the season is crowned “second-half champions” and clinch the second spot in the playoffs. The third and final playoff spot, known as the “wild card” is determined by the team with the overall best record for the entire season. This is where the Stockton Ports currently sit. While the Ports finished strong in the first half of the season at 38-32, they ultimately were 4 games behind Visalia and did not have the luxury of securing a playoff spot. In the second half of the season, they have played under .500 and are currently tied with Bakersfield for last place in the second-half standings. However, due to the strong first-half record, the Ports 61-60 record currently puts them ahead of San Jose by 1 game for the final playoff spot. Since Visalia still has the best record in the second half of the season, there is a good chance they win the second-half division as well. Since they won the first-half division, the final 2 teams to qualify for the playoffs would come down to the overall best record of the 2015 season. These two teams would be the Modesto Nuts and the Stockton Ports. The Ports are currently 9 games back of the second-half division-leading Rawhide and more than likely will not catch up. The Giants (2 games back) and the Nuts (3 games back) however, are in a different situation. While these teams had weak first-half standings, (Nuts were 33-37 and Giants were 30-40) they both have had very strong second-half results and are now not just competing for the wild card, but possibly the second-half division championship crown. In the end, to make the wild card playoff spot, the Ports will have to finish ahead of either the Nuts or the Giants. The playoff race will certainly be an interesting one down the stretch as the Ports look to make back-to-back playoff appearances following 2014’s finish that saw them get swept by the Rawhide.

staying positive
by Heather Correia
In some ways my breast cancer journey began when I was a young girl, with vague memories of going with my mom who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her twenties to St. Joseph’s “Wellness in the Woods” retreat. Fast forward to now – MY breast cancer journey began November 2014. Because of my age and my mom’s diagnosis, I went to UCSF for genetic testing. I’m so happy to hear that St. Joseph’s now has a UCSF Geneticist available to their patients. Since my diagnosis, many people have asked me how I manage to stay so positive. I tell them that if cancer is going to kill me then I want to be happy at the end of my life. I am not going to let cancer take any more from me than what it already has. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not always positive, I have hard days - BAD DAYS, in fact. Just recently, I had a total breakdown. Before cancer, I never liked to let out my emotions, especially tears, in front of my husband, Joe. Since cancer has happened to me I feel every emotion freely. I know I probably come off a little crazy, but I don’t really care. I am me and I like what cancer has helped me to become. I have made the choice to not let this cancer journey be all bad. There are many good things that have come, and will come, from this horrible thing. I have made so many new lifelong friends because of breast cancer and I am very grateful for that. Cancer has also shown me what a wonderful and devoted man I married. Although, I think I may have already known that. What I am really trying to say is that I now look at life with a glass half full, instead of half empty, mindset. So if you’re having a crappy day, do something to make yourself feel better. Make yourself look pretty, that always makes me feel better about myself. And, let’s face it, hair does make you feel more feminine. So put on that wig, if that’s your thing, draw on your eyebrows and put on your false lashes. Whatever it takes to make you feel like the precancer version of yourself! Another thing that helps me stay positive is laughter. I crack jokes all the time about cancer and being bald, and share funny stories about things that have occurred to me in public since being bald (trust me there are a lot of funny stories I could tell you). I just believe that if I put positive out there, positive will come back to me. And so far it has been working. So here I am writing this article for all of you folks to read, and I am hoping that I change at least one person’s outlook on this not so wonderful part of their lives. At the very beginning of my journey I decided to look for a support group. I went to the breast cancer support group at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. Although it was a good group discussion, I’ve decided to put out there the idea of a “younger persons” breast cancer group. If you are in your 20’s, 30’s, or 40’s and dealing with breast cancer, please find me on Facebook or send me an email so I can give you more information. I hope to hear from you. With love, Heather hnc21007@gmail.com

On Friday, August 28th, the Ports are holding their 9th annual Pink Night at Banner Island Ballpark to benefit St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Breast Health Services. Festivities will include Free Shirt Friday giveaways to the first 1,000 fans, courtesy of St. Teresa Comprehensive Cancer Center, a special Pink Night player jersey auction, a memorabilia raffle, and Pink Night rally rag sales. Proceeds from the auction, raffle, and rally rag sales, in addition to $1 from every ticket sold, will benefit St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Breast Health Services.
The Ports are honored to welcome breast cancer survivors and their families to the park for a pre-game ice cream social in the Jackson Rancheria Back Porch and pre-game parade around the field. Survivors will also act as Jr. Ports for the evening and will join the team on the field during the National Anthem. Since its inaugural year in 2007, the Ports have donated over $42,000 to St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Breast Health Services. In 2014, Ports fans made Pink Night a huge success with a total of $7,855 donated to St. Joseph’s, the largest donation to date. “Pink Night 2014 was a smashing success! The over $7,000 that was raised will bring high-quality breast cancer screening equipment and services to underserved women in our community, and will provide low cost clinical breast exams, mammograms, and diagnostic follow up for women with or without medical insurance,” said Jenny Copello, the Development Associate of St. Joseph’s Medical Foundation and Pink Night coordinator from 2012 to 2014. “The evening also brought awareness to the cause. Our Medical Center booth had breast models on display to show people what to feel for when they are conducting a self breast exam. Events like Pink Night allow us to educate the public and emphasize the importance of early detection. We are so grateful for our partnership with the Stockton Ports to coordinate this fun, educational, and philanthropic event!” The Ports would like to thank their fans for supporting Pink Night and St. Joseph’s Medical Center. For more information on how you can donate to St. Joseph’s Medical Center, please contact Kellie Ryan at 209-644-1953 or kryan@stocktonports.com.
