from the 209 to oakland

by Max Bochman

The road to the Majors is a long and difficult journey. The dream, for many, fades after years and years playing in the Minors. Ports fans have grown accustomed to seeing players come and go. Rosters turn over almost completely between years, and when the Ports are playing at an exceptional level, mid-season call-ups are never out of the question. When players leave Stockton, the fans hope that the next time they’ll see them live will be at the Coliseum in Oakland. Unfortunately that does not happen as often as many fans would like. For this reason, the careers of A.J. Griffin and Sean Doolittle are even more special for Ports fans. Both made their Oakland debut in 2012, but their journeys were very different. Doolittle, now a closer for the A’s, began his professional career as a first baseman. In 2008 he came to Stockton with high expectations as he was the first round pick in the 2007 draft. He did not disappoint for the Ports’ faithful. Doolittle launched 18 home runs with a slash line of .305/.385/.560 in 2008. He also helped lead the Ports to their last championship. It seemed he was destined for greatness as a slugging first baseman. In 2009 however, after showing a bit of promise in Triple-A, his dream of reaching the Majors seemed to abruptly end as nagging knee injuries forced him to shutdown baseball activities. A.J. Griffin’s story is a bit different. He was drafted by the A’s in the 13th round of the 2010 draft. After 8 strong starts with Burlington (Oakland’s A-level team in 2011), Griffin was promoted to Stockton. In the notoriously hitter-friendly California League, Griffin pitched to a 3.57 ERA and a 5-3 record. He was then called up again and would eventually end the season with a start in Triple-A. He would need a few more months in the Minors to begin 2012 before he would make his Major League debut on June 24th. He would pitch a strong 6 innings against the Bay-Area rival Giants, giving up 2 runs before being relieved by another pitcher who had just made his debut less than a month before. A pitcher by the name of Sean Doolittle. After the knee problems had forced Doolittle to step down from first base, he decided to change his focus to work on the mound. In 2011 he made his professional debut on the hill for the A’s rookie level team. After continuing to work on his mechanics during the offseason, Doolittle returned to the ballpark where he used to feast on the position he was now playing. Doolittle pitched 10.1 innings for the Ports, striking out 21 hitters, and only giving up a single earned run. He would pitch another 14.2 innings in the Minors allowing only two more earned runs and striking out 27 more batters. On June 8, 2012, after five years of going up and down in the Minors and completely changing the player he was, Doolittle made his Major League debut. In 2015, Griffin and Doolittle are the only former Ports on the A’s Major League roster. Both players are rehabbing from injuries sustained last year, but they will need to be contributors if the A’s expect to reach the postseason this year. With only two former Ports on the A’s roster, Stockton fans can appreciate how tough it is for players to make it to The Show. Hopefully the 2015 Ports will be contributing some future A’s as well.

During the offseason, the Oakland Athletics made some moves with its farm system, sending their Triple-A affiliate to Nashville, Tennessee, after 16 seasons in Sacramento. The A’s and Sounds signed a four-year player development contract, which will keep the A’s prospects in Nashville through at least 2018 in the Pacific Coast League.

The Athletics’ Double-A affiliate Midland RockHounds have been partnered with the A’s since 1999. The RockHounds have claimed three Texas League titles as an A’s affiliate, the most recent in 2014, as two members of the 2014 season, Beau Taylor and Daniel Robertson, were promoted to help during the playoff push. The Stockton Ports are proudly celebrating their tenth anniversary of being an A’s affiliate in 2015, beginning in 2005 when the Ports moved to Banner Island Ballpark. The Advanced-A affiliate claimed the California League Championship in 2008. The Single-A Beloit Snappers of Beloit Wisconsin are going on their third year with the A’s organization. While they have not won a league title, 2014 Ports manager Ryan Christenson led the team to a first-half division championship to ultimately be defeated in the second round of playoffs. The Vermont Lake Monsters of the New York-Penn League have been the ShortSeason affiliate since 2011. During their first year as an A’s affiliate, the Lake Monsters took the division Title. The Arizona League Athletics have been the organization’s Rookie League affiliate since its establishment in 1998. Since then, the Athletics have claimed the league’s title six times.

the rehab Josh Reddick and the perfect rehab As the only current affiliate of the Oakland Athletics in the state of California, the Stockton Ports and the A’s have established a strong connection since the 2005 season. With just a little over an hour drive away, the distance between Banner Island Ballpark and O.co Coliseum has provided an ideal setting for player rehabilitations for the A’s. Over the years, players such as Dallas Braden, Ryan Cook, Alberto Callaspo, and Eric O’Flaherty have graced Banner Island Ballpark with rehab stints. In 2014 alone, there were a total of five rehab appearances. Out of all the appearances by Athletics stars over the seasons, none have seemed to compare to the July 14th, 2014 rehab appearance by Athletics outfielder Josh Reddick.

Reddick rounds third after a two run homer in his first at bat

In the final game of a seven game homestand against the San Jose Giants, Reddick joined the Ports for the first of his week-long rehab. In front of a packed house at Banner Island Ballpark, Reddick did not disappoint from the start. In the Savannah, Georgia native’s first trip to the plate, he hit a towering shot over the Jackson Rancheria Back Porch in right field for a two run home run that brought home former A’s top prospect Daniel Robertson. The roar from the crowd was heard the minute the bat connected with the ball. In a snap of the fingers, the Ports lead rival San Jose Giants by a score of 2-0. The energy from Reddick’s towering shot was felt in the next at bat as current A’s top prospect and fellow Georgia native Matt Olson followed Reddick’s lead with a home run of his own. “That was a really fun moment when Matt followed up with the home run,” said Reddick. “Matty and I still talk to this day. I was there to congratulate him when he got his first invite to big league camp this spring, and I was happy to show him the ropes during spring training.”

by taylor mccarthy

Throughout the game, the Ports bats burst onto the scene leading to an eventual 11-1 crushing victory with a total of 19 base hits, which included six for extra bases. By day’s end, Reddick went a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a home run, double, and two singles as well as a walk. “That game was a lot of fun,” said Reddick. “Going to Minor League ballparks, you know that you’re going to bring in more fans in situations like these so it’s good to get a bigger crowd which gives a little more experience to the younger guys playing in front of more people.” While many Major League ballplayers use rehabilitations as strictly time for improvement and to get back to the big league level, Reddick was a hit with his fellow Stockton teammates and used the situation as a teaching moment. “I try to be as good of a role model as I can for those guys; I enjoyed my time playing with them and giving as much insight as I could about how to approach the game and how to behave not just on the field, but in the clubhouse as well.” With the A’s featuring several new faces in the 2015 lineup, stars like Reddick look to help lead the way for another playoff appearance. As rising stars continue to come up through Stockton, the A’s outfielder could be playing side-by-side with some of his Ports teammates sooner rather than later.

home grown Sports fans of all different backgrounds enjoy pulling for the “hometown kid.” When this comes to mind, it doesn’t really get much better than the story of Dallas Braden. Known as “The 209 Mayor” by his Instagram handle, Braden has captured the hometown spirit of not just fellow Stocktonians, but the 209 area code which is tattooed across his stomach. Originally born in Phoenix, Arizona, Braden moved to Stockton, California where he grew up and played for Hoover Tyler Little League. Braden went on to attend Stagg High School, also located in Stockton, where he excelled in baseball and cross country. Braden continued his baseball path after high school graduation and attended American River College located in Sacramento. Dallas finished with a combined 12-4 record in two seasons. He eventually transferred to Texas Tech where he impressed the Oakland Athletics’ organization enough to select him in the twenty-fourth round of the 2004 MLB Draft. Upon moving up the ranks, Braden landed in Stockton during the 2005 season. While he only spent half the season playing for the Ports before an eventual promotion to Double-A Midland, Braden did not disappoint the local fans. Dallas proved to be one of the best pitchers on the 2005 squad as he finished with an overall 6-0 record to compliment a 2.68 ERA. When Braden returned to Stockton for a short stint, he didn’t’ miss a beat and finished with a 2-0 record. Braden finished his Ports career with an 8-0 record, 3.71 ERA, and 85 K in 11 appearances. “I have so many great memories as a ballplayer. I can say that sporting the name of my city across my chest and hearing all of the 209ers cheering was quite possibly the proudest I’ve ever been on a ball diamond,” said Braden of his time with the Ports. The crowning achievement for Braden came May 9th, 2010 on Mother’s Day when he pitched the nineteenth perfect game in MLB history against the Tampa Bay Rays

20

by taylor mccarthy

in front of a home crowd in Oakland. The achievement was even greater in the sense that Braden’s mother had passed away during his senior year of high school. To cap off a perfect day, Braden’s grandmother Peggy Lindsey was in attendance to witness her grandson’s lifetime achievement. Braden officially announced his retirement in January of 2014, but his legacy has remained strong in both the Stockton and Oakland communities. Shortly after Braden’s perfect game, the A’s honored Braden with a graphic of his achievement right next to hall of famer Rickey Henderson’s retired number. The city of Oakland continued the celebration and announced May 21st as “Dallas Braden Day.” On May 22nd, 2010, the Stockton Ports honored Dallas in front of a sold-out crowd at Banner Island Ballpark with Stockton Mayor Ann Johnston presenting him with the key to the city. Today, Braden is an analyst for ESPN’s Baseball Tonight but stays connected as ever to the Stockton community that he calls home and is still involved in several community fundraisers. The Ports honor one player each year with the “Dallas Braden Community Service Award,” given to a Ports player that is most active in the Stockton community.
