Letter From the President Dear Stockton Ports Fans: As the 2014 season comes to a close in the California League, I would like to thank you for your continued support of the Stockton Ports and reflect on all of the exciting moments and accomplishments on and off the field this season. Ports fans clearly demonstrated their high level of dedication and commitment this season, showing why they are the best fans of any team in the California League. I am joined by everybody associated with the Ports, on and off the field, when I say thank you for your support this season. A ballpark is brought to life by its fans, and once again you have helped bring Banner Island Ballpark to life with your enthusiasm and dedication to the team and the game of baseball. You make the Banner Island Ballpark the ideal place to be on any spring or summer night in Stockton. The 2014 season included amazing achievements on the field, like the continued push for our 12th California League title, Matt Olson’s quest for 40 Home Runs to beat 2008 Cal League Champion Chris Carter’s franchise home run record, Seth Streich and Bruce Maxwell’s MidSeason All-Star nods, and Daniel Robertson’s energy at the top of the line up and in the middle of the field with one of the best all around performances in franchise history. In addition to these exciting performances and many others, we have made several exciting strides off the field. The Ports Anchor Fund generated over $17,000 this season from the generous support of sponsors and fans at various events. The majority of these funds will go to support youth sports and health-based community outreach programs in Stockton and San Joaquin County. In addition, we are proud to serve our community by utilizing our venue for the allotted dates we control outside of the Stockton Ports home schedule. For the second consecutive year we have served as the host of the West Coast Conference Baseball Championship and the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. We have hosted numerous amateur baseball tournaments and showcase events to expose people to our facility and create much needed economic impact into our community. This has been an exciting and fun-filled season, both on and off the field for the Stockton Ports. It’s been a pleasure to serve our fans and to bring them the best family entertainment in the region at our own Banner Island Ballpark! Thanks for coming to the ballpark this year, and I look forward to seeing you for the post season in September and back for the next great Ports season in 2015! Go Ports! Sincerely,
Pat Filippone President

PROUD HOME OF THE
Season Ticket Holder Spotlight
BY TIM POLLACK
LDA Partners Interview done with Brent Lesovsky & Steffany Rohn LDA Partners is a local Architectural Firm that was founded in 1979 in Stockton, and their projects have ranged from private sector to government and city. The firm first joined the Ports as Season Ticket Holders when the team played at Billy Hebert Field in 2003 or 2004, and have had season tickets ever since. Steffany and Brent both attended games at Billy Hebert, and Steffany attended Opening Day at Banner Island Ballpark in 2005. Steffany’s favorite memory of the Ports was Opening Day of Banner Island Ballpark because of the exciting atmosphere and being able to watch the construction of the arena being built next door. Brent enjoyed the horse racing around the perimeter of Billy Hebert during games and when his family attended Little League Night with his son’s Little League team. Steffany cites Sean Doolittle, Chris Carter, and Kurt Suzuki as her favorite players, while Brent said that a catcher a few years back who signed a baseball for his son was his all-time favorite Ports player. They say that every season is their favorite season because every year is fun and memorable. The Premier Staffing Stadium Club food is Steffany’s favorite part of going to a game, and Brent enjoys the goofy skits between innings. LDA Partners primarily uses their tickets by distributing them to their staff, who enjoy visiting the ballpark. Brent says that going to games is a great experience and the workers all do a great job, while Steffany loves the fireworks shows. The Stockton Ports would like to thank Brent, Steffany, and everyone at LDA Partners for their continued supports as Season Ticket Holders!

Brugman in the Clutch Jaycob Brugman’s Contributions to the Ports in 2014 As a 39th round draft pick out of a high school in Arizona in 2010, an eighteenyear-old Jaycob Brugman turned down an opportunity that most kids only see in their dreams. Major League Baseball’s most historic franchise, the New York Yankees, offered Brugman a contract to begin his professional career with the organization. Brugman, however, turned down the offer to attend Brigham Young University located in Provo, Utah, a far cry from the bright lights and big city dreams of New York. The move paid off, as Brugman went on to a successful career with the Cougars hitting .304 in the span of three seasons. By his junior year, Brugman was named to the All-West Coast Conference First Team and WCC All-Tournament Team. Brugman even helped BYU qualify for the WCC Championship which was held at Banner Island Ballpark. By season’s end, Brugman was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 17th round of the 2013 draft and was sent to Burlington, Vermont to start his professional career with the Vermont Lake Monsters of the New York Penn League. With a strong season in Vermont, Brugman began 2014 in Beloit, where he hit .278 with 8 home runs and 37 RBI, enough for a promotion to Stockton in early July. Since his debut with the Ports, Brugman has been a key to the Ports’ second-half surge and playoff run. In 32 games, Brugman has hit .270 along with 8 home runs and 21 RBI, including a game winning walk-off hit his first night playing at Banner Island Ballpark. The former BYU Cougar was instrumental in helping the Ports take 6 out of 7 games in a crucial home stand in the first week of August, which saw the lefty hit 6 home runs in a span of five games. While the ability to hit a home run at any level of professional baseball may prove to be difficult for most, Brugman’s approach at the plate remains simple. “Really I’m just looking for my pitch and trying not to miss it. I think that’s the key to hitting. You want to get your pitch early in the count because if you miss it, you may not get another one.” In a season with two starting Ports outfielders lost to injury and suspension, Brugman has proven to be a solid addition to the Ports. Currently listed as the Athletics’ number twenty overall prospect, Brugman’s strong plate discipline and powerful arm have captured the interest of several scouts.
10
BY TAYLOR MCCARTHY
For now though, Brugman looks to provide the Ports with a solid everyday bat and defensive presence. “I think the key for us to keep winning is that we need to continue to be consistent. Everyone on our team from our pitchers to our hitters are doing a great job at being consistent. That’s what it really comes down to overall as a team.”

Ports Recap For most teams, Opening Day usually doesn’t have too much bearing on the entirety of a season. Yes, all games matter, and it is nice to come away with a win in the first one, but in the whole scheme of things, 1 game out of 140 isn’t going to make or break a season. For the Ports however, Opening Day, an 18-inning marathon, has proven to be a metaphor for how their season has turned out. After opening the game up with a run in the first inning, the Ports would quickly fall behind as the Visalia Rawhide would take the lead in the top of the second, scoring 4 total. The Ports, as they have all season, however, would fight back and tie it up heading into the ninth. After giving up the lead once again, the Ports were able to tie it in the bottom of the ninth and follow that up with 8 shut-out innings, until Billy McKinney would knock in Chad Pinder for the game winning run. This season has replicated that game from the beginning. After getting off to a good start, the Ports went through a bit of a rough stretch. They struggled in the middle of April and quickly fell behind Bakersfield for the first-half title. The team, however, never showed any signs of packing it in. They finished the first half 8 games behind the Bakersfield Blaze but were still in second and certainly still had hopes of making the playoffs. Since the second half, however, the Ports have been the ones blazing. Throughout the season the Ports have been able to rely on almost of all of their players to contribute. When guys have gotten injured, traded, or promoted/demoted, others have stepped up and produced whatever was needed to keep the victories coming. Renato Nunez and Matt Olson have been supplying the power. With 29 and 35 home runs, respectively as of August 15th, they’ve surpassed the previous record of home runs by two teammates set in 2008 by Chris Carter and Sean Doolittle. Matt Olson also has a very real shot of surpassing Carter’s singleseason home run record of 39 also set in ’08. But they certainly aren’t the only ones contributing to the Ports’ successful season. A’s top prospect, Daniel Robertson, has certainly been earning that recognition, putting up a slash line of .303/.396/.464. And the pitching staff has been on point, as well. Jake Sanchez, who was acquired at the end of June has been stellar for the Ports, with an 8-1 record and ERA right around 3.00. Seth Streich has also pitched well before heading to the DL, as he was leading the team in innings pitched and had a 9-6 record with a 3.16 ERA.
24
BY MAX BOCHMAN Currently six games up on the second place San Jose Giants for the second half title, and now five games up on Bakersfield for the overall title, the Ports have come together as a unit and have delivered the top results of all the California League. As they head towards the playoffs, the marathon is coming to an end, or the 18th inning if still comparing to that fateful game on Opening Day. While they can no longer rely on Billy McKinney, traded to Chicago as part of the trade that brought Jeff Smardzija to the Bay Area, the team has more than enough capable players of bringing home that victory California League Title.
