Letter From ports President pat filippone Dear Stockton Ports Fans, Welcome to the Banner Island Ballpark in 2015! We are excited to have you join us in 2015 as we celebrate our 10th anniversary since the gates to “Our Yard first opened on April 28th, 2005. The 2015 season is also the 66th season the Ports have been proud members of the California League. Your continued patronage and support is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to making the 2015 season our best yet. The 2014 season was another amazing chapter to add to our book of Ports history - from an 18-inning Opening Night victory, to leading the California League in wins during the regular season and seeing three former Ports players make their Major League Baseball debuts during the season - excitement was found every step of the way. During the season Stockton Ports fans can expect the outstanding brand of family-friendly and affordable entertainment that we are known for. A stellar promotional schedule will feature an emphasis on celebrating the 10 seasons at Banner Island and will include 13 fireworks shows, Matt Olson and Daniel Robertson bobblehead nights, Free Shirt Friday giveaways, Thursday hat giveaways, and a celebrity appearance by JT Snow. Additionally, we are eager to host our first Honor Stockton Night and a Tribute to Sons of Anarchy Nightthemed jersey. Off the field, we will continue to maintain a strong presence within our community. Please come by and see either Splash or 2015 Stockton Ports players at the various events that we will support during the season. Our charitable arm - The Anchor Fund - which reflects our commitment to strengthening the community using baseball and entertainment - donated a combination of cash and in kind gifts to over 400 organizations in 2014 and will look to expand our reach in the San Joaquin community during 2015. In addition, for the third consecutive season, Banner Island Ballpark will play host to the West Coast Conference Baseball Championship (May 21st- May 23rd). Follow top notch college baseball teams as they shoot for a berth in the College World Series in Omaha from your favorite seat in Stockton. To stay up to date with the Ports this year you can head to our website at www.stocktonports.com or visit our social media pages on Facebook , Twitter, and Instagram. We are also always available through our front office phone number (209) 644-1900. Thank you for your continued support of the Stockton Ports - and it is our pleasure to welcome you back in 2015. Go Ports! Sincerely,
Pat Filippone President

CELEbrating 10 years with oakland
Ten years, ago the Ports began playing here, at Banner Island Ballpark. With the new stadium also came a new parent-club as the Ports became the Advanced-A affiliate for the Oakland A’s. Since then, the Ports have enjoyed a lot of success at their new home. In the first year of their affiliation with the A’s, the Ports had an impressive 78-62 record which boosted them to the playoffs. While they were not able to take home the championship, they still had a great year that fans will certainly remember. Their ace that season was Stockton’s own Dallas Braden, who was able to compile a perfect 6-0 record in his 7 starts with the team, all while keeping his ERA below 3.00, which is impressive as the Ports’ new stadium has certainly trended as a hitter-friendly ballpark. He would later go on to play in Oakland, even throwing a perfect game on Mother’s Day in 2010 with his grandmother from Stockton, in attendance. Since then, they have continued to put up successful seasons as they build the future of the team in Oakland. In 2008, the Ports won their first Cal-League Title as an A’s affiliate. Led by future big league first basemen, Chris Carter, the Ports were able to put together a 76-64 regular season record before getting hot in the playoffs and taking home the championship. Josh Donaldson and Sean Doolittle were also on that team, and all three would later play in Oakland. In 2011 the Ports enjoyed another season in which they were about .500. The rotation that year was led by two Major Leaguers in Dan Straily and A.J. Griffin. While Straily was traded last year, Griffin is expected to play a major role this year for the A’s as he returns from injury. Michael Choice, who was traded to the Rangers, was the best hitter on that team with a .285 average to go along with his 30 home runs that year. Along with a few rehab games from former Port great, Chris Carter, the Ports possessed a very potent lineup in 2011. Last year, the Ports put together their best regular season record as an A’s affiliate, going 85-55 for an astounding 30 games above .500. Even more impressive was the fact that the Ports were able to do so while seeing their key players either get promoted or traded to help the Major League team. Billy McKinney was packaged with 2013 Ports’ Player of the Year Addison Russell for Major League starter Jeff Smardzija. Additionally, reliever Nolan Sanburn was traded to the White Sox in exchange for slugger Adam Dunn. The Ports never missed a beat however, and they cruised to the North Division Title. Obviously, the Ports’ affiliation with the A’s has been a success. The depth of the A’s farm system has provided the Ports with rosters full of future Major Leaguers. Heading into their tenth season with the A’s, the Ports will also be the only affiliate in California. Because of this, fans can expect to see even more rehab stints from A’s players in case of injuries. The partnership that has formed between Stockton and Oakland has been very beneficial for both clubs, and should be something Ports fans should continue to be excited about.

Banner Island Ballpark a Look Back at 10 Years Since the opening of Banner Island Ballpark, fans all over the country have been treated to a variety of events ranging from wacky promotions to walk-off home runs, thrilling victories, and even a two day game. With ten years, millions of fans, and thousands of games played, the Ports staff decided to take a stab at selecting the eight best moments of Banner Island Ballpark over the years, and left it up to the fans to decide. Below are the rankings, with number one being the fan-voted All-Time Best Moment of Banner Island Ballpark. Let the debating begin! #8 - The Bee Swarm (2012) On Sunday, April 15, 2012, a truly unique moment occurred at Banner Island Ballpark. With Ports pitcher Blake Hassebrock on the mound, an estimated 20,000 bees appeared above the center-field wall. As the swarm made its way across the field, player started hitting the ground. “It was wild - I’d never seen anything like it,” said Hassebrock. “I was laughing my face off, lying down on the ground. It was hilarious seeing all the guys [on the ground] in the middle of a baseball game.” With the bees ultimately colonizing in a tree just outside the gates, Ports infielder Ryan Pineda hit a walk-off homerun to add to the already eventful Sunday afternoon. #7 - Ports Defeat San Jose Giants to Capture California League North Championship (2011) After defeating the Modesto Nuts in a best-of-three series to kick off the postseason, the Ports took on the San Jose Giants in five-game series and started the series on the road with a 7-6 win. Stockton then suffered a 13-1 loss the next night, tying the series 1-1. The Ports clinched the Northern Division Championship Title after winning games three and four of the series at Banner Island Ballpark. #6 - Michael Choice’s Father’s Day Walk-Off Home Run with Father in Attendance (2011) On June 19, 2011, Michael Choice had one of the most memorable moments of his career on Father’s Day, hitting a walk-off home run against Rancho Cucamonga. With both of his parents in attendance, Choice has stated that it was his highlight of the 2011 season. The Ports went into the inning trailing 12-11 when Choice hit his second home run of the game, leading the team to a 14-12 victory. #5 - Banner Island Ballpark Hosts Cal League/Carolina League All-Star Game (2007) On June 19, 2007, the Stockton Ports had the honor of hosting the annual California-Carolina League All-Star game at Banner Island Ballpark. Ports catcher Anthony Recker, a future Major Leaguer, represented the Ports as the starting designated hitter and went 1-4 during the game. Surrounded by a sold-out crowd, the California League defeated the Carolina League 10-5.
8
#4 - Chris Carter Breaks Ports’ Single-Season Home Run Record of 32 (2008) In the 2008 season, Carter finished with a .259 batting average, 39 home runs, and 104 RBI which included breaking the Ports all-time single season home run record of 32. Carter’s leadership helped propel the Ports that season to their 11th California League Championship. To cap off the magical run, Carter was also named the California League Rookie of the Year.
#3 - Dallas Braden Earns Key to the City (2010) The Stockton native proved to be one of the most memorable on the 2005 Ports’ squad as he finished with an overall 6-0 record to compliment a 2.68 ERA. After another short stint with the Ports, Braden finished his career in Stockton with an 8-0 record, 3.71 ERA, and 85 K in 11 appearances. The crowning achievement for Braden came May 9th, 2010 on Mother’s Day when he pitched the nineteenth perfect game in MLB history against the Tamp Bay Rays in front of a home crowd in Oakland. Braden officially announced his retirement in January of 2014, but his legacy has remained strong in both the Stockton and Oakland communities. On May 22nd, 2010, the Stockton Ports honored Dallas in front of a sold-out crowd at Banner Island Ballpark with Stockton Mayor Ann Johnston presenting him with the key to the city. #2 - Banner Island Ballpark Opening Night (2005) After 377 calendar days of construction, Banner Island Ballpark first opened its gates on April 28, 2005. Representatives of the Stockton community, including Stockton Vice Mayor at the time Gary S. Giovanetti and former Mayor Gary Podesto, joined in on the ceremonies by throwing the ballparks’ two first pitches.
9
At the new water-front home of the A’s Advanced-A Affiliate, Ports fans were able to enjoy the game from a variety of areas including stadium seats, luxury suites, picnic areas, and the club area, with incredible views of the field from every seating option. The sold-out crowd of 5,287 fans, witnessed the Ports defeat the San Jose Giants 7-4.
#1 - Wade Kirkland’s 17th Inning Walk-Off Home Run and Winning Pitcher Game (2013) Wade Kirkland, Stockton’s utility infielder, pitched the final two innings and acted as the DH on May 21, 2013. Kirkland’s first at-bat came with one runner on base and one out in the bottom of the 17th inning when he hit a two-run home run off of Lake Elsinore’s John Hussey leading the Ports to a 11-9 victory. Kirkland not only hit the game winning walk-off home run, but was also the winning pitcher.

Rick Magnante Takes the Helm in 2015 In 2015, the Ports welcome new manager Rick Magnante to the organization as he begins his first season in Stockton. Magnante spent 2014 managing the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League (Class A Affiliate of the Oakland A’s). While Beloit may have been Magnante’s first time managing a full-season ball club, his background brings a wealth of experience. In his 13th season in the Oakland Athletics organization, Magnante has worn several hats, so to speak. While many baseball operational positions focus on one area of expertise, Magnante has had the ability to cover a variety of different roles. Credited as signing organizational stars such as Barry Zito and Bobby Crosby, Magnante has pulled double duty as an area scout and manager for several years. Not only has he been able to scout players, but he has been able draft and manage them as well, something many people cannot say. “It’s like having a surrogate child, when you are able to scout a kid for a few years as he moves up the ranks in his amateur status and then to be able to draft him, it really is a hands on experience with the player. It’s great to be able to guide and nurture them every step of the way. Nothing can compare to that. I’m here to guide these young men and help them along the way as they try to achieve their dreams of playing professional baseball.” Perhaps feeling a gratitude towards helping young players achieve their goals can date back to Magnante’s playing career when he grinded it out for the Reno Silver Sox in 1969, his one season of Minor League Baseball. After leaving the game of baseball, Magnante jumped right back into the game he loved. “I played in the Cal league in 1969. After I got released I spent 10 years in the private sector working for an insurance agency. I circled back to professional baseball with the Brewers organization in the 70’s and realized I was missing out in life. I became smitten with the game all over again. Once I decided I wanted to be back in baseball that was it. Wealth isn’t determined by dollars, and I found myself loving every minute of being able to share my experience and help these young men along the way.” Known as a player’s manager throughout his career, Magnante has managed Minor League Baseball teams dating back to 1987 when he coached the Bristol
20
Tigers (Detroit Tigers affiliate). From 2006-2010, he managed the Vancouver Canadians and then spent three seasons with the Vermont Lake Monsters from 20112013, which included consecutive playoff appearances. At 67-years-old, Magnante has shown no signs of slowing down. “I feel great. I am truly energized by my players and seeing their passion and just being on the field in general. As long as I can make difference and stay proactive, I have no plans of slowing down and see myself doing this for a long time.” A perfect example of the manager’s drive can be seen in his efforts in bringing the sport of baseball to the continent of Africa. Magnante has played a vital role in introducing the sport, as he has managed the South African team in the World Baseball Classic and even enjoyed a coaching stint in the inaugural MLB African Academy in 2011. “People ask me what it was to manage in the World Baseball Classic all the time. For a person who has never been outside of Class A ball, it was like standing in the shadow of greatness. We were lining up at home plate and I see guys like Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones, and Alex Rodriguez. I can’t tell you in words what the experience was like. To go to South Africa and introduce the game of baseball and help try to develop players and bring to the USA to compete was really terrific.” Magnante’s passion for baseball continues to run deep, something the Ports manager will be sure to bring to the plate at the first crack of the bat in 2015.

Baseball by the Books: The Stockton Ports proudly support schools in the San Joaquin and surrounding counties with the Baseball by the Books program, presented by Subway. For the eighth straight season, the Ports have traveled to schools around the area promoting the importance of reading, requiring students to read five books (or seven if in middle school) in a two-month time period. Over 45,000 bookmarks were given to students from 85 schools. After completing the program students receive two free tickets to a Stockton Ports game during the 2015 season. The Ports also provided the participating schools with special visits from our mascot, Splash. In addition to the free tickets, the school with the best overall participation in the program is rewarded $1,000 towards their PTA, courtesy of the Ports Anchor Fund. The 2014 grand prize winner was Jackson Elementary of Jackson, CA, who will be joining the Ports for a pregame presentation on Sunday, April 19th.
