Letter From President Dear Stockton Ports Fans, Welcome to Banner Island Ballpark - Opening Day #10 - believe it or not! The entire Stockton Ports organization is proud and excited to have you join us for another season of Stockton Ports Baseball. Your continued patronage and support of the Ports is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to making the 2014 season our best yet. 2014 marks our 65th season as an organization and our 10th season playing at beautiful Banner Island Ballpark. We are also proud to begin our 10th season as an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. Last season was another amazing chapter to add to our book of rich Ports’ history, and we look to capitalize off of last year’s success to make 2014 even better with the help of the Ports’ new manager, Ryan Christenson. Fans can expect the same family-friendly and affordable environment in 2014, along with a stellar promotional schedule which includes 14 fireworks shows, Josh Donaldson and Sean Doolittle bobblehead nights, and celebrity appearances by Kevin Mitchell (1989 NL MVP with the San Francisco Giants) and Dennis Haskins (Saved by the Bell). Off the field, the Ports continue to hold a strong presence within the Stockton community. The Anchor Fund reflects the Ports’ commitment to strengthening the community using baseball and entertainment as a backdrop, with donations reaching 400 non-profit organization, and nearly $40,000 in monetary donations made in 2013. In 2014, we look to expand these numbers and continue our outreach in the San Joaquin community. For the second consecutive season, Banner Island Ballpark will play host to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Championship (May 9th- May 11th) and the West Coast Conference Baseball Championship (May 22nd- May 24th). To stay up to date with the Ports, fans can head over to our website at www.stocktonports. com or visit our social media pages on Facebook and Twitter (@StocktonPorts). We are also accessible through our front office phone number (209) 644-1900. Thank you for your continued support of the Stockton Ports. We look forward to making 2014 our best season yet, Go Ports! Sincerely,
Pat Filippone

Season Ticket Holder Spotlight
Chris and Shellie Weed Chris and Shellie Weed have been loyal Season Ticket Holders since the Ports moved to Banner Island Ballpark in 2005, although their first experience with the Ports was in the 1970’s at Billy Hebert Field. In 2011, the Weeds received the honor of Stockton Ports’ Fans of the Year. Chris, a Turlock native, grew up watching the Modesto Colt 45’s of the California League, when he quickly fell in love with the game. Chris is a fee-only CPA investment and financial advisor in Stockton, and in his free time, he has umpired and coached baseball, in addition to being a dedicated fan of the game. The Weeds recall their favorite Ports memory as the time a local car dealer gave away a Mustang to a fifteen-year-old during a grand slam promotion. Shellie’s alltime favorite Port is Luke Appert, while Chris enjoyed watching Chris Carter, who was named the Ports’ 2008 Player of the Year. While Chris and Shellie cannot pinpoint a favorite season, they say that all seasons are fun, and they just enjoy coming to the games and bringing new guests. The Weeds enjoy the fellowship of Season Ticket Holders, the weather, and just baseball in general. At Banner Island Ballpark, Chris and Shellie say that they can come out from first pitch to the last out, not know the score, and still have a great time. Chris and Shellie can be seen cheering on the Ports from in the Premier Staffing Stadium Club, with their ten season tickets which they share amongst sixteen other couples. Chris enjoys sharing the tickets in his office to help people attend their first Ports game and wants people to see the beautiful ballpark that provides a reasonably priced, local entertainment option. The Weeds have yet to meet someone who has come to the ballpark and not enjoy the game. The Stockton Ports would like to thank Chris and Shellie their continued support and their loyalty as Season Ticket Holders!

Ports Welcome Christenson as New Manager
Ports Manager Ryan Christenson The journey to Major League Baseball, or “The Show, as several people call it, may not always be the most glamorous path taken. From long bus rides, to nagging injuries, to the pressure of performing in front of thousands of fans nearly every day, the road taken is often one filled with hardships and struggles. Now more than ever, players are forced to perform on the field day in and day out. The ultimate reward: a spot on a Major League roster. The ultimate failure: a career cut short. The same can be said for managers of the game looking to break into the ultimate stage of Major League Baseball. With a wealth of talent in the United States and abroad, the manager plays a vital role in not only the development of young players, but also providing great leadership and success to an organization. Enter Ryan Christenson, the Stockton Ports first year manager. Christenson, a Redlands, California native and Pepperdine alum, was drafted in the 10th round of the 1995 MLB draft by the Oakland Athletics. During a career that spanned six seasons, the speedy outfielder played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, and Texas Rangers with four seasons spent with Oakland.
20
Christenson begins the 2014 season in Stockton after managing the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League. Christenson’s managerial debut in Beloit was nothing short of impressive as Beloit finished with one of their most successful results in franchise history. Along with a playoff appearance, the Snappers captured a first-half division title which was the franchise’s first since 2007. Beloit also posted the sixth best winning percentage in team history along the way while finishing with a 77-62 record. “Managing in Beloit exceeded my expectations,” said Christenson. “The chemistry of players was great, and they played well together. The players got better, and the development was great. I was very fortunate to have such a good group of players who were willing to learn and progress throughout the season.” While the transition from being an everyday ballplayer to managing the game can be a drastic change, Christenson attributed his success as a manager to the everyday grind he experienced as a big league player. “It’s baseball. I’m very familiar with the game and the atmosphere.” Some aspects of the game, however, proved to be different the second time around. “I would say that getting used to the speed of game from the managerial perspective has been a bit different. As an outfielder, I feel that I didn’t have as much of an appreciation for the speed of the infield as I do now,” said Christenson. “I also learned how important it was to handle the daily grind on the coaching side. As part of the job of playing professional baseball, you have to be able to endure a long season. I enjoyed it from a manager’s perspective, and a lot of the players enjoyed it as well. I look forward to bringing that experience to Stockton.” With several players from the playoff roster in Beloit getting the call up to Stockton in 2014, Christenson looks to lead the familiar faces to a California League Championship. “I’m looking forward to bringing guys back from last year. The quality of people I was around last season was very impressive. They were easy to coach, and I can’t ask for a better group of players. I’m looking forward to making them better.” While Christenson’s Major League career finished in 2003 with the Texas Rangers, his professional career was not done just yet. After playing a season with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League in 2006, Christenson then signed on to play a season with Niagara Falls Bison for the 2007
21
season. In the end, Christenson’s connection to the game of baseball brought him full circle in his return to the organization that signed him to his first professional contract. Even though Georgia has been home to Christenson for the last five years, his excitement in returning to the Golden State is apparent. “It feels good coming back to the A’s organization, like coming home in a couple of different ways.” “I’ve been in Atlanta for about five years now, so coming back west feels really good. It’s been a comfortable transition for me as a lot of people who were involved in the A’s organization when I was playing are still involved today.”

Community Corner Stockton Ports Anchor Fund: The Stockton Ports Anchor Fund was established in 2007 and focuses on benefiting youth non-profit organizations and sports. The Anchor Fund exemplifies the Stockton Ports’ dedication to community involvement, through various donations and fundraisers that take place at Banner Island Ballpark, such as Root Beer Float Day and Anchor Fund Weekend. All of the proceeds from the various fundraisers go directly to the San Joaquin Community, focusing on youth non-profit organizations. With the help of dedicated Ports fans, the Anchor fund was able to donate nearly $40,000 in monetary donations and $198,000 of in-kind donations to 400 local non-profits. Baseball by the Books Programs: The Stockton Ports proudly support schools in the San Joaquin and surrounding counties with the Baseball by the Books program, presented by Subway. For the eighth straight season, the Ports have traveled to schools around the area promoting the importance of reading, requiring students to read five books (or seven if in middle school) in a two-month time period. Over 45,000 bookmarks were given to students from 87 schools. After completing the program students receive two free tickets to a Stockton Ports game during the 2014 season. The Ports also provided the participating schools with special visits from our mascot, Splash. In addition to the free tickets, the school with the best overall participation in the program is rewarded $1,000 towards their PTA, courtesy of the Ports Anchor Fund. The 2013 grand prize winner was Merryhill Preschool of Stockton.
