Ports Players Among Oakland’s Top Prospects With back-to-back AL West Division Championships, the Oakland A’s look poised to repeat as champs of the west again in 2014. Several Major League Baseball analysts have predicted Oakland as the team to represent the American League in the World Series. In an era of free agent signings and multimillion dollar contracts, building a successful organization from the ground up can be a difficult task. The Athletics, however, have stayed true to their traditional approach with developing players, and it certainly showed in 2013 with former Ports players Sean Doolittle, Josh Donaldson, and Dan Strailey playing an essential role in the A’s playoff push. In 2014, the Stockton Ports roster again bolsters a wealth of talent with several faces eyeing down Oakland as their final destination. Five of the Athletics top ten Minor League Prospects in 2014 will be calling Banner Island Ballpark home this season as players like Billy McKinney and Matt Olson lead the way for the Ports. Voted as the number two overall prospect of the organization (behind 2013 Ports player Addison Russell), outfielder Billy McKinney made the jump to Stockton after his first season in professional baseball playing in the Arizona Rookie League and the New York Penn League (Vermont Lake Monsters) in 2013. As the 23rd overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, many scouts view McKinney as one of the best overall hitters taken that year and see Mckinney as the next big star to play in O.Co Coliseum. Behind McKinney lands the A’s number three prospect, Daniel Robertson. The California native makes his way to Stockton with manager Ryan Christenson after playing for the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League, where Robertson hit .277 with 46 RBI. In his first nine games with the Ports, Robertson has been on a tear hitting .366. After slugging 23 home runs and 93 RBI in Beloit at only nineteen years of age, Matt Olson looks to bring the power with him to the Ports in 2014. A two-way player, Olson was selected by the A’s as the 47th pick in the compensation round of the 2012 MLB Draft and is currently ranked as the organizations fifth top prospect. Renato Nunez is the next Ports player on the list of potential future A’s stars. Nunez comes to Stockton from his native country of Venezuela. Alongside current Stockton teammates Matt Olson and Daniel Robertson, the Beloit Snappers had one of the best infields in the Mid West league in 2013, and Nunez was a key factor in the team’s success. Nunez belted nineteen home runs in 2013, which more than doubled his career high and landed him at the number six spot on the A’s top prospect list. Rounding out the top ten lists of top A’s prospects is right-handed pitcher Nolan Sanburn. Known to reach levels between 93-95 mph, Sanburn wooed scouts enough to rank him as the tenth top prospect of the A’s organization. Originally an outfielder in high school, Sanburn was drafted in the 2012 MLB Draft in the second round by the Oakland A’s out of the University of Arkansas. While a shoulder strain sat Sanburn out for parts of his professional career since being drafted, the hard-throwing righty has a fresh start with the Ports and more importantly, a fresh arm after only completing 48 2/3 innings pitched in his professional career. Overall, the 2014 campaign for the Stockton Ports looks very promising. With eleven California League Championships under their belt, these young prospects may have what it takes to lead Stockton to a championship season.

Season Ticket Holder Spotlight

United Way of San Joaquin United Way of San Joaquin, directed by Andy Prokop, has been a proud Season Ticket Holder of the Ports since 2011. Andy is the current President and CEO of the United Way, a position that he has held since 1999. Previously, Andy spent three years in the United States Army, leading him to serve in Vietnam as a Door Gunner and Air Frame Mechanic. Following his tour, Andy spent the next 30 years in the Fast Food Industry when he oversaw 350 Carl’s Jr.s in California, Nevada, and Arizona, as the Vice President of Operations. Andy’s work with Carl’s Jr. brought him back to his home-state of California, and his first experience with the Ports occurred while he was acting as the franchisee to the four Carl’s Jr.’s in Stockton. Andy became a Corporate Sponsor of the ports, with signage around the ballpark and Carl’s Jr.’s advertisements on the back of tickets. Andy’s involvement with the team led him to become a diehard Ports fan, with Andy attending every game and even traveling to various California League ballparks to cheer on the Ports. Andy states that traveling to different ballparks and getting to know the players and their families are his favorite memories with the Ports. His favorite all-time Ports player is Mike Matheny, the current Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, who to this day, Andy considers to be a friend. Andy enjoys the fellowship and friends at the ballpark, and he feels that everyone at the ballpark is more than just a friend; rather, they are all members of the Ports’ family. In his current position with United Way of San Joaquin, Andy continues to support the Stockton Ports with his two Premier Staffing Club tickets, which they have held since the 2011 season. Although Andy and Carol attend games regularly, he often uses the tickets as a reward for other non-profits that work with United Way, and he distributes them to the United Way staff and Board of Directors so they can enjoy games, as well. The relationship between United Way and the Ports runs deep, with United Way often partnering with the Stockton Ports Anchor Fund, the organization’s non-profit sector. The Anchor Fund assists in distributing donated ticket to local non-profits that otherwise would not find the means to attend a game. The Ports and The United Way continue to team up on various community projects and initiatives every year to better the Stockton community. The Stockton Ports would like the thank Andy and Carol for their continued support, and we look forward to continuing our community partnership with United Way!

On April 12th, the Ports hosted their first Jackie Robinson Night. The players and coaches all donned #42 jerseys, which were all auctioned off, and the highest bidders had the opportunity to meet their favorite Ports players and received the signed jerseys following the game. The Stockton Ports Anchor Fund also hosted a raffle and mystery ball grab, with proceeds benefiting youth sports organizations in the San Joaquin community.
