Barfield’s Journey

In his second tour with the Stockton Ports, Jeremy Barfield is bringing new meaning to the phrase “It’s not how you get there; all that matters is that you make it.” The Texas native and San Jacinto College star enters the 2014 season in familiar territory, but this time he is new player with a different perspective. Originally an 8th round draft pick with the Oakland Athletics in the 2008 MLB draft, Barfield rose through the ranks of the A’s Minor League system as a corner outfielder. In his six seasons within Oakland’s organization, the 6 foot 5, 220 pound slugger logged over 600 games and was a 2-time MiLB All Star. Known for his towering home runs and rocket arm in the outfield, Barfield soon joined the Sacramento River Cats (Triple-A Affiliate) and was just one step away from the big leagues. After a slow start in 2013 with Sacramento and the harsh reality of being sent back down to Double-A ball in Midland in his rear view mirror, Barfield’s baseball career suddenly changed. As it turned out, scouts, coaches, and the Oakland front office took a greater interest in Barfield’s arm than his powerful bat. “I’ve heard it for years…you need to use your arm, you should pitch,” said Barfield. Faced with the biggest decision of his career at that point, Barfield had two clearcut choices: move down in the organization and face the possibility of a finished career, or start a new beginning at the age of 25 as a pitcher. “It was a whirlwind of emotion,” said Barfield. “I spent my whole career as a posi-

7

tion player and hitter, and if I had to choose, I would be a hitter, but the decision really wasn’t given to me.” After weighing his options, Barfield decided to start over as a pitcher. It was a decision that did not come easily but one he felt was necessary to continue in the sport he grew up playing. Coming from a family with a rich background in baseball, Jeremy sought out advice from his older brother, Josh, who spent time in the Major Leagues playing for the San Diego Padres. “He told me that being a professional baseball player is a grind and that professionally, it’s your job. He stressed the importance of being as professional as possible but also to have fun.” Jeremy’s father, Jesse, a big leaguer in his own right, played in the Majors for eleven seasons with the Blue Jays and Yankees and helped influence Jeremy’s decision to start his new career path as well. “I was definitely surprised with the change, but I also realize that this is the path I have to take. That’s life, and I have to make the best of it in order to make it to the big leagues. I’m committed to my new career as a pitcher,” said Barfield. In his current season with the Ports, Barfield’s rocket arm is impressing coaches and staff each game. At times Barfield has looked brilliant in shutting down opposing batters. In 13.1 innings pitched and eight appearances, Barfield has struck out a total of 19 batters. With velocity approaching the mid-90’s, Jeremy’s second stint with the Ports may be a quick one before advancing to Double-A Midland.

Season Ticket Holder Spotlight

Larry and Elaine McGuire Larry and Elaine McGuire have been Stockton Ports Season Ticket Holders since 2006, however, they have been fans of the team since childhood. They’re extremely dedicated to the Ports, and support the organization both on and off the field. They love coming to Ports games for the friendly atmosphere, food, and close contact with the players and staff. Larry’s first memory of the Ports involves swimming at Oak Park as a boy, followed by standing outside the fence of Billy Hebert Field to catch foul balls with his friends. Elaine was born into a family of baseball fans and has been going to Ports games since she was a girl. Once they got married, almost 53 years ago, they started attending Ports games together and brought their children and grandchildren out to the ballpark to meet the players and enjoy the great family-friendly atmosphere. Some of their favorite memories at the ballpark include the 21-inning game during 2009 that went into a second day, due to California League rules at the time, and the hot stove dinners that the Ports used to host. At the hot stove dinners, Larry and Elaine had the opportunity to get to know the Ports players and coaching staff on a more personal level. Larry and Elaine enjoy being able to get to know the players and staff on a more personal level than in the Major Leagues. Their favorite season was 2008, when the Ports won the California League Championship. Although they faced many difficult opponents, everything seemed to come together that season to lead the team to victory. Larry and Elaine’s favorite Ports player is Frank Martinez, who played third base for a number of seasons. Although he never made it to the Major League level, he always came out ready and excited to play. His was the first player’s jersey that Elaine purchased, and they still remember him fondly. Besides joining the Ports at Banner Island Ballpark, the McGuires also come out to support the Front Office in their recreational softball league. They love watching the men of the Front Office in a different element and say that you can really see the love of the game in each of the guys. All in all, the McGuires love Banner Island Ballpark and the fact that they’re treated like family whenever they come out. The Stockton Ports would like to thank Larry and Elaine for their continued support and their loyalty as Season Ticket Holders!
