the 2015 stockton ports

by taylor mccarthy

With a young team taking the field at Banner Island Ballpark in 2015, many unfamiliar faces will be gracing the spotlight during this season. After a 2014 season that showed a Ports squad that finished the 2014 season with one of Minor League Baseball’s best records at 85-55, the 2015 Ports’ roster boasts almost a completely different look. Here are a few of the potential future A’s stars Ports fans should be sure to check out this season: Franklin Barreto: The Venezuelan native was arguably the key piece to a trade that sent former Oakland Athletics All-Star third baseman Josh Donaldson to the Toronto Blue Jays. At only 5’9”, Barreto was on international scouts’ radars long before signing in July of 2012 with the Blue Jays organization at only 17 years old. In Barreto’s first full season of Minor League Baseball, the shortstop put up a slash line of .311/.384/.481 playing in the Northwest League for the Vancouver Canadians. In 328 plate appearances, Barreto also put up solid power numbers with a total of six home runs and 61 runs batted in. Tyler Marincov: Marincov spent the later part of 2014 in Stockton after getting called up from Beloit. His impact was immediate, and he has continued his contributions already in the infancy stages of 2015. As an 8th round pick out of Northern Florida in 2012, Marincov made an immediate impact within the A’s organization, finishing third in all farmhands in doubles (34), stolen bases (18), and fourth in home runs (18). B.J Boyd: Boyd finished 2014 tied for fifth amongst all A’s farmhands in triples with 5 in 2014, he also finished seventh in stolen bases with 15. Boyd is off to a hot start at the plate in Stockton in 2015 and has provided solid defense and speed on the base path. J.P Sportman: As a 27th round draft pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, the 23-year-old comes to the Ports as a product of Central Connecticut State University. In just his second season in minor league baseball, Sportman has made the jump from short season A ball in Vermont, all the way to Advanced-A with Stockton. In his first professional season, Sportman contributed to the Lake Monsters with a .301 batting average in 38 games. Nick Rickles: After sitting out the entire 2014 season with a shoulder injury, Rickles looks to get back on track with the Ports on his journey to the big leagues. As a 14th round draft pick out of Stetson, Rickles hit .258 along with 7 home runs in 2013 with the Beloit Snappers. Matt Chapman: Although not on the Ports’ roster, the A’s 3rd overall prospect could potentially land in Stockton after rehabbing an injury in extended spring training. Chapman played the 2014 season in Beloit before being called up to Double-A Midland in the playoffs. The Cal State Fullerton product was the 25th overall selection of the A’s in the 2014 MLB Draft. Dillon Overton: Rated as the 5th overall prospect in the Athletics organization, all eyes will be on Overton in 2015 as he transitions to Advanced-A ball with the Ports after playing with short season Vermont all last season. So far in four appearances with the Ports, Overton has shutdown opposing hitters with a 2.20 ERA in 16.1 IP while also keeping opposing batters to a dismal .237 batting average.

playing for the hometown team B.J Boyd Helps Lead the Ports in 2015 At 5’11’’ and 230 pounds, Bijon Montell Boyd, better known as “BJ”, has quickly become a fan-favorite at Banner Island Ballpark. At just 21 years of age, Boyd has steadily developed into a player within the Oakland Athletics organization that fans have begun to take an interest in.

Boyd has demonstrated speed on the base path allowing him to reach base often in 2015

As a bay area native, Boyd grew up in nearby Palo Alto where he attended Palo Alto High School. During his senior year, the lefty hitter lit up opposing pitchers and finished the season with a .507 AVG., along with 36 hits in 71 at-bats while also leading the team in on-base percentage (.628) and slugging percentage (.704). Boyd’s speed was certainly on showcase, as well, when he swiped a total of 19 bags to help lead his team to a 27-7 finish.

Boyd’s speed wasn’t just noticed on the diamond, but on the football field, as well, as he helped lead Palo Alto’s CIF Division 1 squad to a state championship in 2010. During his final season of high school football, BJ put up a total of 7 touchdowns from kickoff returns. While Boyd certainly turned some heads on the football field, baseball seemed to be the speedy outfielder’s claim to fame, even at an early age. At 14-years-old, BJ was a star player on his Babe Ruth team that reached the World Series. His early success in the game translated into his high school years when he helped Palo Alto win their first Central Coast Section Title in school history during the 2011 season. Along the way, several big league teams including the Milwaukee Brewers and the Seattle Mariners began to express interest in the young talent. Eventually, Boyd was selected in the fourth round by the hometown Oakland Athletics in the 2012 Major league Baseball First-Year Player Draft. While many high school athletes debate whether signing with a major league team or attending college, the choice came easy for Boyd as he grew up an avid A’s fan idolizing the likes of Ricky Henderson.

by taylor mccarthy

In the summer of 2012, Boyd began his professional baseball career in the Arizona Summer League before transitioning to Short Season Single-A baseball with the Vermont Lake Monsters in 2013. It was in Vermont where Boyd had an impressive year, hitting .285 with 8 home runs and 32 RBI. In 2014 with the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League, Boyd tied fifth among all A’s farmhands with 5 triples and finished 7th in stolen bases with 15. As of May 1st, B.J has gotten off to a hot start with the Stockton Ports hitting .292 with a .352 OBP in 19 total games played. His dazzling speed on the base path has led to several infield hits as well as solid defensive play in the outfield, something the Banner Island faithful have been pleased to see. With a young team taking the field in Stockton during the 2015 season, look for players like B.J to help lead the way in an ultra competitive Cal League North Division.

Boyd rounds third after tying the game with a two run home run on April 18th against the Rawhide

Highlights of the 21-year-old’s early career include leading his team to the AZL Championship game where he struck out nine batters in five scoreless innings.

lewis brinson Position - OF Throws - R Bats - R Drafted - 2012 (Round 1) 2015 - .275 AVG, 2 HR, 7 RBI Brinson sits as the 6th overall Rangers prospect and there is every reason to believe why. In 2014 with the Hickory Crawdads, Brinson had a 20-20 season belting more than 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in just his first season of pro baseball. At 6’3’’ and just 170 pounds, Brinson has raw power which many scouts believe could make him a 30-30 man in the majors.

PLAYERs TO WATCH antonio senzatela Position - P Throws- R Drafted - Signed as free agent in 2011 2015 - 1-2, 2.63 ERA, 24 IP, 20K As the Rockies 12th overall prospect, Senzatela proved his worth in the organization pitching in the hitter friendly South Atlantic League in 2014 when he finished sixth overall in ERA. At only 20 years of age, Senzatela has a powerful fastball that reaches low 90’s and an impressive changeup as his second pitch.

rosell herrera Position - SS/OF Throws - R Bats - S Drafted - Signed as free agent in 2011 2015 - .235 AVG, 1 HR, 8 RBI The switch hitting Herrera looks to stay healthy in 2015 as wrist issues kept him out for much of the 2014 season. After playing mainly shortstop, the Rockies moved Herrera over to centerfield in fall instructs last fall and he proved to be a natural at the position. Look for Herrera to still cover the infield but make some noise in the outfield as well.

On Saturday, May 16th, the Ports will be hosting the annual Alumni Night, when the organization will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1965 California League Champions, in addition to ten years at Banner Island Ballpark and ten years of affiliation with the Oakland Athletics. The Ports will hold a pre-game ceremony to honor the team’s alumni, and the evening will be complete with postgame fireworks, presented by San Joaquin County Correctional Officers Association.

Chad Pinder and Dusty Robinson prepare floats for fans at last year’s Root Beer Float Day.

The fan-favorite Root Beer Day, presented by Amy L. Scriven, DDS, is scheduled for Sunday, May 31st. The Ports will be selling bottomless collectable mugs for only $6. All proceeds will go to the Stockton Ports Anchor Fund, which benefits youth sports non-profit organizations within San Joaquin County. Root Beer Float Day also gives fans the opportunity to interact with Ports players, Splash, and respected members of the Stockton community.

The Stockton Ports’ Youth Baseball Camps will be held on July 11th and 12th and August 8th and 9th. The camp gives children ages 5-13 the opportunity to learn baseball and softball skills from the future faces of the A’s, courtesy of Amy L. Scriven, DDS!
