Ports Highlights of 2014 The Ports 2014 roster, while young, is shaping out to be a team that could leave its mark in the California League with high hopes of a playoff run. While season highlights have included two six game winning streaks with a few thrilling come from behind wins at home and flirting with a no-hitter on the road, there have also been a few bumps in the road. At times the Ports have looked brilliant, but at other moments, the young age makeup of the team has been demonstrated as the Ports have dropped several games within reach. Currently, the Ports represent one of the youngest teams at the single A level of Minor League Baseball with rising stars such as nineteen year old Billy McKinney and twenty year old Daniel Robertson. A’s director of player development, Keith Lieppman, was recently quoted as saying “we look at that as being, we hope, the A’s future infield and a majority of the makeup of that ballclub,” when referring to the Stockton Ports. A bright spot in the 2014 season has been the emergence of catcher Bruce Maxwell. Currently listed as the 20th ranked prospect in the A’s organization, Maxwell joins the Ports in 2014 after playing stints in both Beloit and Stockton in 2013. The Division III prospect out of Birmingham Southern is currently hitting .299 for the Ports with three home runs and 14 RBI. What may be even more impressive are Maxwell’s strong defensive skills behind the plate. Maxwell currently poses as a threat to base runners with a powerful arm that has picked off his fair share of opposing players this season. There has been no shortage of power for the Ports this season as the team currently sits a top of the California League in Home Runs with 53, with Matt Olson belting a league leading 11 home runs. Highly touted prospects Chad Pinder and Daniel Robertson rank 1 and 2 on the Ports Roster in batting average with .328 and .296 marks while Pinder Leads the way with 24 RBI for Stockton. Speed on the base path from players such as Aaron Shipman and Bobby Crocker have also helped the Ports to move up in the standings throughout the course of the season. Pitching prospects Seth Streich and Tim Atherton have also helped keep batters at bay for the Ports by providing solid outings each game this season. In the broad spectrum of the A’s organization, nine of the Ports represent the top 20 prospects. While growing pains may occur from time to time, expect raw talent and strong skill sets to break out during the season. The Ports just may have enough talent to cause some damage in 2014. *Statistics as of May 19, 2014.

Catching Up With Ron Shelton The Ports hosted their annual Alumni Night on Saturday, May 17th and had the opportunity to catch up with Ron Shelton, the writer and director of the Academy Award-nominated film, Bull Durham, in addition to other classic sports films, including Tin Cup and White Men Can’t Jump. Shelton explained that his greatest achievement since his time playing baseball has been making movies in general and the success of Bull Durham. He cites his time in Minor League Baseball, including his year with the Ports, as an inspiration to the film. When asked how his time in Stockton influenced the film, Shelton described that “in Class-A ball you feel you’re a long ways from the Big Leagues—it’s so far away you can’t even smell it—so you’re just concentrating on the task at hand today. Each at bat, each ground ball, must be dealt with—and trust that you’ll keep moving up if you do your job well. The bus rides and the camaraderie and the humor and irreverence of life in the California League is certainly the same as in the Carolina League, where Bull Durham is set. I never played in the Carolina League, so you could say that I’m projecting the Cal League into it.” Shelton just finished writing a musical version of the famed Minor League Baseball film, which will be premiering in Atlanta in September 2014.

Season Ticket Holder Spotlight
Jennifer Walden Jennifer Walden has been a Ports Season Ticket Holder since the opening of Banner Island Ballpark in 2005. Jen is a retired teacher from Stockton Unified School District and enjoys life traveling and watching baseball on a nightly basis at Banner Island. Jen’s first experience with the Ports came in 1990 at old Billy Hebert Field where she, her husband Roger, and their friends would come out on a regular basis and watch games from behind home plate. A couple years later, both Jen and Roger started working at Billy Hebert Field in the picnic areas for a fun second job during the summers. Over the years, Jen has many great memories at the ballpark. The one that stands out to her happened in 2012, when her entire section planned a reunion and each Season Ticket Holder brought out their families to the game for a fun night behind home plate. During her years supporting the Ports, Jen and the rest of the Season Ticket Holders in her section (109/Scout A) have gotten to know each other, and she has made lifelong friends with other Season Ticket Holders that she has met at the ballpark. Jen’s all-time favorite Port is Archie Gilbert, who was an outfielder for the Ports in 2008. She always appreciated his work ethic making it very easy to root for him. 2008 was also Jennifer’s favorite season, when the Ports won the California League Championship. Other than just loving baseball, Jen loves to watch others around the ballpark and see their reactions to the game. One of her favorite parts about coming to a Ports game is seeing how much fun kids are having and watching them starting their baseball foundation here at the ballpark. Jen believes that Banner Island Ballpark is a great stadium and that the Stockton community is lucky to have it. She says that the Ports Staff do a great job making sure fans have a good time at the ballgames. Also, she feels she gets great value for her Season Ticket investment each year. Jen has always loved baseball and grew up around it. Her dad was an umpire, so she was introduced to the game early in life. Watching baseball has always been one of Jen’s favorite pastimes to share with her husband. Also, Jen has always found baseball to be very relaxing, and she enjoys coming out to games at night after dealing with the normal stresses of everyday life. The Stockton Ports would like to thank Jennifer for her continued support as a Season Ticket Holder!

Behind the Graphics For our last Game Day edition, we received many compliments along with a few questions about the appearance of the magazine. The meaning behind the 3rd Edition cover of our Game Day Magazine was to help celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the 1969 Stockton Ports. As part of the 45th Anniversary celebration, our organization hosted Alumni Night on May 17th to honor the 1969 Ports championship team. As many people have guessed, the cover of the Game Day Magazines were yellow and green because the Ports are currently affiliated with the Oakland Athletics while the 1969 Ports were affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles whose colors are orange and black.
Have you ever wondered how logos were made? I will provide you with a behind the scenes look on how the Splash Squad’s logo was created. With the emergence of computer graphics, some people think that everything is created with computers, but that is not the case. Sure, many graphic designers and artists can and do create logos with the computer, but some of the very best logos are first drafted by hand with a pencil and paper.

Catching Up With Doo From Banner Island Ballpark to the Coliseum, Sean Doolittle, like many other players within the Oakland A’s organization, spent part of his professional baseball career playing in Stockton. Long before signing a five year extension worth $10.5 million or becoming a fan favorite amongst A’s supporters, Doolittle was just another Minor League ballplayer looking to break through and get a chance of a lifetime. For Doolittle, the move did not come as easily as he would have expected. As a first round draft pick in the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of Virginia, Doolittle originally came up as a position player before switching over as a pitcher due to knee problems. Coming up all over again in the Minors as a pitcher seemed almost too easy for Doolittle. After only 26 innings pitched during the 2012 season, which included stops in Stockton, Midland, and Sacramento, Doolittle was called up to the majors on June 4, 2012. Fast-forward two seasons and Doolittle continues to make headlines for the A’s and has steadily become a fan favorite. With popular catch phrases such as “What would Doo do”, as well as a rock star-like Twitter account, Doolittle remains humble and is thankful of the time he spent in Stockton. “Playing in Stockton was great, we got great support from the community,” said Doolittle. After playing in Stockton, Midland, and Sacramento, Doolittle still says Stockton was his favorite and most memorable stint in Minor League Baseball. “That for sure was one of the best stops I had in the Minor Leagues as I was making my way up. I really enjoyed it there.” In 2014, Doolittle has found a permanent home in Oakland and continues to showcase his wonderful skill set. In nearly 140 innings pitched as a Major Leaguer, Doolittle holds a 3.15 ERA and 148 strikeouts. While Doolittle may have a different uniform to wear, his appreciation of the Ports organization and fan base remains. “I learned a lot while I was in Stockton; it was definitely a very valuable experience, so I feel that I wouldn’t be here today without a lot of the stuff I learned while I was there.”
