Dillon Overton’s Strong Recovery
by taylor mccarthy
The game of baseball can oftentimes prove to be an unfair game for many young promising athletes as they climb the ranks on the path to reach the big leagues. For some, the time to hang up the cleats comes earlier than expected, no matter what the age. For others, a bump in the road may call for a different traveled path. Enter Ports starting pitcher and Oakland Athletics fifth overall prospect Dillon Overton. As a junior pitching for the Sooners out of the University of Oklahoma, Overton had scouts from all over the country beyond excited at the potential the then 21 year old showed at the time. The 6’2’’ lefty and Weatherford, Oklahoma product had a commanding fastball that touched the mid 90’s along with an impressive arsenal of offspeed pitches to add to his repertoire.
During Overton’s junior season with Oklahoma, the lefty displayed a strong year as he was named second team All-Big 12 Conference after just missing out his freshman and sophomore seasons when he was named Honorable Mention. At the time, it seemed almost certain that Overton would be selected somewhere in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft. Instead, it was Overton’s teammate Jon Gray who was selected in the first round with the third overall selection, with Overton going in the second round after suffering a strained forearm which eventually led to Tommy John surgery. While many pitchers come back differently from such a serious surgery, Overton let his pitching do the talking on the mound when he joined the Vermont Lake Monsters of the New York Penn League in the summer of 2014. The same powerful lefty who went 9-3 with a 3.02 ERA in 16 games during his junior season picked up right where he left off. In 5 starts with the Lake Monsters, Overton was automatic, striking out 22 batters in 15.0 innings pitched, along with a 2.40 ERA. In his second full season of professional baseball, Overton has continued to pitch strong in 2015. While most in his position could have spent some time at the next level in Beloit (Full Season A, Midwest League), Overton made the jump to Advanced A with the Stockton Ports. As of May 18th, in 7 appearances for the Ports, Overton has a 2.08 ERA, 26 strikeouts, and a 1-0 record in 30.1 total innings pitched. With Overton’s command as strong and effective as ever, the 23 year old lefty has proven to be a key piece to Stockton’s rotation.

The Ports recently caught up with 2011 Alumnus A.J Griffin to reflect on his time pitching with the Ports and his experience since joining the Oakland Athletics. Currently working on re joining the A’s from an injury that caused him to miss the 2014 season, Griffin gave us some insight to life in the minor leagues and how his life has changed since. Ports- What was it like playing for the Ports in 2011? A.J.- Playing in Stockton was awesome, I got called up from Low-A in Burlington, Iowa and my first game pitching I got to Stockton and I went 5 innings and struck out like 10 guys, it made me think that maybe I could actually be a big league pitcher. I really enjoyed playing there, the stadium is awesome, it’s definitely one of the best minor league stadiums, it’s a great place to play ball. Ports- Best memory with the Ports? A.J.- I’d say pitching against Nate Freiman who played for the Lake Elsinore Storm at the time and we faced off against them for the finals of the Cal League Championship. Ports- What is the biggest transition playing Major League Baseball? A.J.- I try to approach the game the same wherever I am at, there is definitely more people you are going out and pitching in front of every night which is a good thing but I just look at it plain and simple, its baseball. Ports- What are you looking forward to the most in 2015? A.J.- Well it’s been a long process for sure being injured and rehabbing, but we are getting closer and closer so things are looking good. Ports- How did it feel having your own bobblehead with the Ports? A.J.- That was pretty cool, it was kind of trippy having a little guy that’s you with a bobblehead with a little baseball glove on the mound but I have it and I love it. It’s at my place in Scottsdale, it’s down in my man cave on my table so it’s great.

player profile: matt chapman
by Maxwell Bochman
For the past forty years, Cal State Fullerton has been a powerhouse in college baseball. They have won 29 conference titles in that time, as well as four National Championships. They have also sent quite a number of players to the Major Leagues. A’s fans will remember names such as Kurt Suzuki and Jeremy Giambi who both came from Cal State Fullerton and were drafted by Oakland. Another former Titan who hopes to have his name remembered by the A’s faithful is the 2014 first round pick Matt Chapman. Chapman was a terrific player during his tenure with the Titans. Over his three years in college, he produced a slash line of .295/.391/.443. He never batted below .285 during that time and complimented his hitting with plus defense at third, highlighted by a stellar throwing arm. During the 2014 season, his junior year and last before being drafted, Chapman put up a very impressive slash line of .312/.412/.498 and included six home runs. While his 13 total home runs over the course of his college career may leave a little to be desired, scouts have been raving about his power stroke since he was a freshman, and he should be able to showcase that in the hitter-friendly confines of Banner Island Ballpark. Chapman comes to Stockton without even being in the A’s organization for a full year. A native of Dove Canyon, CA, Chapman was drafted based on his “raw power, cannon arm, and approach at the plate” according to Baseball Prospectus. All of which are still considered strengths for Chapman as he begins his season with the Ports. So far, Chapman has hit a bit of a learning curve as he begins his professional career. In 50-games with Beloit, Chapman was able to homer five times, but his line of .237/.282/.389 was a bit disappointing. What were more worrisome were the 46 strikeouts to only 7 walks. He will need to improve his batting eye to ever become a Major Leaguer. As of this writing, Chapman has only been with the Ports for 9 games in 2015, and so it is much too early to tell how he will fare in the California League. He does have two home runs already, so the power that made him a first round pick is certainly there. With under a year of professional baseball under his belt, Chapman is expected to eventually become a major contributor for the Oakland A’s. While his numbers haven’t quite taken off as expected, he is still much too young to be written off. His power plus his terrific arm from third base will make him an exciting player for Ports fans this year and hopefully the Cal State Fullerton tradition of becoming Oakland A’s continues.
