All-Stars Maxwell & Streich Providing Ports With Veteran Leadership With the young and talented 2014 Ports roster making a strong push for the playoffs, two players in particular are doing their part to make sure the two year playoff drought for one of the California League’s most historic franchises, ends this season. Bruce Maxwell and Seth Streich were the two members of the Ports selected to this year’s California/Carolina League All-Star Game held in Wilmington, Delaware. While a long season of play can tend to lead to streaky outcomes for many players, Maxwell and Streich have been consistent all season long. Maxwell, the Division III talent from Birmingham-Southern has come out the gates for the Ports as a defensive threat to base runners all over the California League. The catcher’s rocket arm has thrown out a total of 40% of runners faced attempting to steal this season. Maxwell has also let his bat do the talking by posting a .270 average, with 5 home runs, and 25 RBI. “I’m glad that somebody recognized my hard work and the homework that I do off the field. I feel that I’ve thrown better this year. I’ve hit a lot better than most people anticipated, so it feels good to be honored with an all-star selection, and I am very thankful for it,” said Maxwell. On the pitching side for the Ports, Seth Streich has been nearly unhittable and leads the Ports pitching staff in several categories including wins and ERA. As of June 23rd, Streich holds an 8-4 record to go along with a 2.93 ERA including 85 K in 80 IP. His opponents are hitting .233 against the 6’3’’ righty pitcher from Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania in his 15 total starts in 2014.

7

Through it all, the Ohio University Alumni and 2012 sixth round draft pick of the A’s remains humble on the success he has experienced at Banner Island Ballpark. “It felt good to be selected to the All-Star Game. That’s definitely one of the goals I set for myself this season. Obviously there are a lot of deserving players on our team and in the league who could have made it so I feel pretty fortunate that I’m one of the guys from our team who got selected.” On a Ports roster that compasses several players under the age of 21, both Maxwell and Streich have taken on a leadership role that is beginning to show results. Early in the season the Ports showed flashes of brilliance, but at times the youth has also shown with inconsistent play on the field. As of June 23rd, the Ports have appeared to turn the corner and start to put everything together as a team, completing a successful sweep of the first-half California North Division Champions, the Bakersfield Blaze. The win put the Ports in first place in the division and overall first place wild card spot in the entire league. The efforts and veteran leadership of both Maxwell and Streich will be essential for further success down the stretch, a role both players appear to be ready for.

Season Ticket Holder Spotlight

Garry and Becky Potten Garry and Becky Potten have been Season Ticket Holders since the Ports moved to Banner Island Ballpark in 2005 and frequently attended games at Billy Hebert Field. Becky was born and raised in Stockton, while Garry grew up in Canada and moved to the area in 1962. As a Stockton native, Becky has been attending Ports games since she was five years old, and when Garry and Becky started dating in 1964, they began attending games together. Garry’s favorite memory with the Ports was celebrating his birthday by tailgating in the parking lot and attending the game afterwards with his friends. During the game, Garry received a birthday scoreboard message referring to him as “Garry Rotten,” which his friends found amusing. Garry and Becky’s favorite all-time favorite Ports players include Addison Russell, Kurt Suzuki, Jemile Weeks, and Chris Carter. The Pottens feel that attending the games is bigger than baseball and say that when the team wins, it makes the games more fun. Garry and Becky enjoy watching the Major League prospects, making friends with fellow fans, the Premier Staffing Club, the food, and the ballpark. The Pottens share four seats with five other couples and often trade in their unused tickets for future games. They like the convenience of being Season Ticket Holders, getting to know the employees at the ballpark, and the atmosphere of the games. The Ports would like to thank Garry and Becky Potten for their continued support as Season Ticket Holders!

The Journey to Oakland Starts at First Base Matt Olson and His Success in 2014 In the 2012 draft, the Oakland Athletics had three first round picks. With their first two they selected two shortstops, 2013 Port Addison Russell, and current Ports’ shortstop Daniel Robertson. Selecting middle infielders has become something of a trend for the A’s. Since 2005, they have selected five middle infielders in the first round, which stands out even more when you factor in that they didn’t have a first round pick in 2006. With their third pick however, they decided to go a different route and selected a first baseman, from a high school in Georgia, named Matt Olson. They certainly aren’t regretting bucking the trend. Currently, Olson is leading the California League in home runs with 19. While his batting average of .245 leaves a bit to be desired, he is still putting up an on-base percentage of .396 which is good for 11th in the Cal League and leads all Ports’ players. When asked if there’s any secret behind the success of his power numbers this year, Olson said “I just wait for a good pitch and try to be as selective as possible. [The home run numbers] really go hand-in-hand with my walk totals.” While the A’s don’t draft first basemen regularly in the first round (they’ve selected only four since 1984), they have certainly targeted the right guys when they do. The three before Olson have all gone on to big league success. In 1984 they selected one of the most feared hitters of his generation in Mark McGwire. They waited 18 years to draft another, but again selected an All-Star in the form of Ohio State prospect Nick Swisher. And while the third guy never found the success the A’s predicted at first base, Sean Doolittle has become arguably one of the best relievers in the game and currently serves as the closer for the big league club. Olson is certainly making the case that he belongs to be grouped with these players.

Correa has backed up the hype this season for the JetHawks and was named to the Cal League Roster for the 2014 All-Star Game. He currently is ranked by MLB.com as the No. 30 overall prospect and No.5 shortstop.

Mark Appel Position-P Throws R Drafted- 2013, 1st round (1st overall) by Houston Astros 2014 - - 0-2, 11.94 ERA, 17.1 IP, 18 K Although off to a slow start, Appel has all the tools of being an MLB All-Star including his upper-90’s fastball and a strong changeup and slider. Known for his control of his pitching arsenal, Appel projects to be a number one starter in Houston’s rotation very soon.

The Afternoon Crock-Pot In his second season with the Stockton Ports, fans can spot a familiar face in a secured role in the outfield. Bobby Crocker, an Aptos, California native, joined the Ports in the beginning of the 2013 season, after a promotion from the Burlington Bees, the A’s Class-A affiliate in 2012. Crocker was selected by the A’s in the fourth round of the 2011 First-Year Player draft. As a rising star out of Cal Poly, San Louis Obispo, Crocker was named the team’s Ozzie Smith Most Valuable Player and named to the First-Team All-Big West Conference team during his junior year with the Mustangs, before signing with the A’s. In his first year with the Ports, Crocker ended the season batting .276 with 11 homeruns and 22 stolen bases. Crocker, now in his second year with the team, is looking to improve his stats in the second-half of the season. “I tend to start off slow and try to do too much. I need to let things fall into place,” said the outfielder. Heading into the second half, Crocker is now batting .257 with 5 homeruns and is leading the team with 18 stolen bases. “Mac [Brian McArn, Ports Hitting Coach] has been great and is always available. We were able to make some small adjustments. Marcus [Marcus Jenson, A’s Minor League Hitting Coordinator] was also in town and has helped me with a new approach at the plate.” While Crocker spends most of his time at the ballpark working on his technique, when asked what he enjoys doing on an off-day, he says that he and Wade Kirkland (Stockton Ports infielder) usually can be found fishing or golfing.
