vertigan’s strong season at the plate

by taylor mccarthy

When Ports Center Fielder Brett Vertigan was promoted from Beloit to Stockton on May 8th, Ports fans did not know a whole lot about the 24-year old lefty from Long Beach, California. While Vertigan certainly made his marks during his college career, earning All-Big West honors in 2012 and leading the conference with a .381 batting average for UC Santa Barbara, the jury was still out on what exactly Vertigan could “bring to the plate” for the Ports. After being selected by the A’s in the 10th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, Vertigan spent his first season of professional baseball with the Vermont Lake Monsters followed by a full season with the Beloit Snappers. While Vertigan was able to produce on some levels his first two seasons, his numbers were not enough to move him up the ranks and he spent yet another season in Vermont in 2014. At the start of this season, Vertigan returned to Beloit and did not disappoint. It took only 26 games with the Snappers for the A’s to promote the speedy outfielder to Stockton after posting a .293 batting average to compliment his 27 hits. Since his promotion to Stockton, Vertigan has continued his success in monumental strides. Currently hitting .337 for the Ports (good for first on the team), along with 3 home runs and 27 RBI, Vertigan has also provided an outstanding glove in center field. His speed on the base path has also proven to be a strong asset to the Ports as he leads the team with 13 stolen bases. As the first-half of the season came to a close on Sunday, June 21st, Vertigan’s hot bat has him sitting atop the California League for the highest batting average at .337 just above Lancaster’s A.J. Reed who is hitting .335. At 24-years of age, Vertigan’s experience and leadership has certainly been the spark plug the Ports desperately needed coming into the month of June that saw the team finish an impressive 16-4 and riding a 9 game winning streak. After reaching a .500 mark on May 5th, the Ports did not get back to this mark until more than a month later on June 15th. At 38-32 as of June 22nd, the Ports finished only 4 games out of first place to the red hot Visalia Rawhide. Their record also proved to be better than that of the prospect heavy 2014 team which saw the Ports finish with the best record in the California League at 85-55. As the second-half of the 2015 season arrives, Vertigan will look to keep the offense cruising as the playoff hunt gets closer.

covey’s all-star season

by taylor mccarthy

As the Ports team play continues to improve and players begin clicking on all cylinders, Ports pitcher Dylan Covey has remained one of the Ports’ strongest assets during the 2015 season. Since the beginning of the year, the Glendale, California native and University of San Diego pitching product has solidified the Ports’ starting rotation, giving them a winning chance each time he takes the mound. Covey was a former first-round draft selection by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft but did not sign. Instead, the 6’2’’ righty went on to pitch at the University of San Diego, the same school as MLB players A.J. Griffin and Kris Bryant. After a stellar career pitching for the Torros, Covey was once again drafted by a big league team, this time by his home state Oakland Athletics with a 4th round selection. Since joining the Athletics organization, Covey has shown a strong improvement from his beginnings. In his first stint in Minor League Baseball, Covey pitched for the Vermont Lake Monsters (New York Penn League) and in 10 appearances, went 1-1 with a 4.75 ERA. The following season, Covey joined the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League where he sat at a 4-9 win/loss record along with a 4.81 ERA before being called up to join the Ports’ roster toward the second-half of the season. Covey was able to string together some impressive starts for the Ports but overall struggled to remain consistent. As a first-time pitcher in the hitter-friendly California League, Covey had an ERA of 7.15. The 2015 season has proven to be a fresh start for Covey, and with the first half of the season in the books, Covey currently has a 6-3 record along with a 3.16 ERA with opposing hitters mustering up a .232 batting average against him. What is even more impressive is the pitcher’s work load, currently sitting at 79.2 innings pitched; Covey may surpass his 2014 innings pitched amount of 140. In 2015, Covey represents the only Ports player selected to the California/Carolina League All-Star game held in Rancho Cucamonga, California, home of the Quakes. Covey’s accomplishment and strong 2015 season can certainly be attributed to the righty’s strong work ethic and ability to stay healthy throughout a long baseball season. As Covey’s stock continues to rise, Ports fans should enjoy his time in Stockton as a promotion to Double-A Midland is looking more and more likely as the season progresses.

subway® Restaurants’ community impact The locally owned and operated SUBWAY® restaurants in the Sacramento area are proud to support their local community and provide easy access to healthy ingredients and lifestyle information. Through their partnership with the Stockton Ports and the California State Parks Foundation, Sacramento area SUBWAY® restaurants are committed to having a positive impact in their communities. SUBWAY® Baseball by the Books: The Stockton Ports proudly support schools in the San Joaquin & surrounding counties with their Baseball by the Books program presented by SUBWAY® restaurants. For the seventh straight season, the Ports have traveled to schools around the area promoting the importance of reading. The purpose of the reading program is to encourage students to read both inside and outside the classroom. Students were required to read five books (or seven if in middle school) in a two month time period. Over 45,000 bookmarks were given to students from 87 schools. The reward for completing the program was two free tickets to a Stockton Ports game during the 2015 season. The Ports also provided over 40 of the participating schools with special visits from our mascot, Splash. In addition to the free tickets, the school with the best overall participation in the program was rewarded $1,000 towards their PTA, courtesy of the Ports Anchor Fund. The Ports are proud to share in their efforts with SUBWAY® restaurants to promote the importance of reading in the greater San Joaquin County. SUBWAY® Kids’ Club: SUBWAY® restaurants also serves as the presenting sponsor of the Kids’ Club. The SUBWAY® Kids’ Club is open to all Ports fans 12 years and younger. For only $5, members receive one ticket to every Sunday home game, player meet and greets, 50% off Kids Zone on Kids’ Club days, $10 off the Ports’ Youth Baseball Camps, 10% off birthday party packages, $1 discount at non-Kids’ Club games, and more! The Ports had over 200 members in the SUBWAY® Kids’ Club in 2014.

“You Share. We Share.”: In addition to their involvement with the Ports, SUBWAY® restaurants in the Sacramento and San Francisco area have joined forces with California State Parks Foundation (CSPF) to give back to the local community. From April 15 to August 31, 2015, more than 850 local SUBWAY® restaurants are participating in the “You Share. We Share.” campaign to help support CSPF. The “You Share. We Share.” campaign encourages the community to get out and share their weekends with SUBWAY® restaurants, and SUBWAY® restaurants in the San Francisco and Sacramento area will share right back by donating a percentage of weekend sales, up to $100,000, directly to CSPF. For over 45 years, CSPF has worked hard to ensure that California has the best state parks system in the world by building a diverse membership community of passionate park advocates, raising funds to support and protect state parks, mobilizing volunteers to work on behalf of parks, advocating for adequate funding and sound stewardship policies for parks, and facilitating educational programs, habitat restoration, land acquisition, and capital improvements in state parks. Through the “You Share. We Share.” campaign, SUBWAY® restaurants will positively impact millions of people today and for years to come by promoting healthy and active lifestyles, protecting the environment, and supporting CSPF programs that benefit state parks and their visitors.
