Sanburn On The Mound

BY KELLIE RYAN

Sanburn, a Komoko, Indiana native, has been a solid go-to reliever for the Ports with his 2-1 record, 5 saves and 2.98 ERA on the year. The fast-throwing righty can be spotted during late-inning appearances at Banner Island Ballpark. The Athletics’ tenth top prospect was drafted in the second round of the 2012 FirstYear Player Draft out of the University of Arkansas. While with the Razorbacks, Sanburn helped lead his team to the College World Series during his sophomore season and ended his intercollegiate career with a 2.96 ERA and 6-5 record before getting drafted as the 74th overall pick. Entering his first college season, Sanburn was still getting acclimated to pitching, as he spent the majority of his high school career as an outfielder. “It wasn’t too big of a transition. I pitched a little in high school and wanted to do whatever was best for the team,” said Sanburn. However, Sanburn can use the newly acquired position to his advantage. The switch means he has less wear and tear on his throwing arm compared to most pitching prospects in the Minor Leagues. While Sanburn was sidelined for much of the 2013 season due to a shoulder injury, he looks to progress throughout the season in Stockton. “Right now I’m working on being more consistent with my off-speed pitches and location.”

Lamb’s Solid Contribution

BY TAYLOR MCCARTHY

Since being called up from Beloit in late May, Ports pitcher Chris Lamb has been a bright spot in the Ports pitching rotation in the hitter-friendly California League. The Berkeley, California native and Davidson alumnus has shown great ability on the mound for the Ports while compiling a 3-1 record and an ERA of 3.65. In 56.2 innings pitched for the Ports, Lamb has struck out 43 batters while walking 25, with opponents of Lamb hitting just .247. Drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 11th round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft, Lamb has steadily climbed through the A’s Minor League system. After spending a season each with the Vermont Lake Monsters and Beloit Snappers, Lamb is now eying a promotion to Double-A Midland by next season.

PROUD HOME OF THE

Season Ticket Holder Spotlight

BY LISA PETERSON

Kevin Holmes with wife(left) & daughter(right) Kevin Holmes, a Stockton native, has been a Stockton Ports Season Ticket Holder since 2006 but has been enjoying Ports games his entire life. He and Kristen, his wife of one year, make it out to almost every game, and often bring one of their children to enjoy the games with them. Some of his earliest memories with the Ports involve shagging balls at Billy Hebert Field in the 1970s in exchange for hot dogs and soda. He first made it out to Banner Island Ballpark halfway through the 2005 season. After attending 22 games that year and trying out various seats in the ballpark, Kevin decided that Section 117 was the perfect spot for him and purchased his season tickets the following season. His seats are still in the front of Section 117, although he can be heard throughout the stadium. Kevin played baseball from t-ball up through the age of 16 and was taught to yell throughout the entire game. He feels that professional players should have a tough skin and that if they can’t handle him they shouldn’t play professional baseball since they’re going to encounter even more distractions as they progress. His goal is to give our players true home-field advantage by getting into the heads of the opposing team. His favorite memory came when the Ports made the playoffs and was given a chair to sit behind the San Jose bullpen to yell and psyche out their pitchers. Kevin continued to sit behind them the entire series and picked up that one of the pitchers was carrying a Justin Bieber backpack. When Kevin went back to his normal seat during the final game of the series, that individual came in to pitch and Kevin began a “Justin Bieber” chant throughout the ballpark. It succeeded in throwing off the pitcher’s rhythm and helped the Ports beat the Giants. One of his favorite parts about coming to games is the personal experience that he gets to have with the entire park, including fans and players. The Stockton Ports would like to thank Kevin for his continued support and loyalty as a Season Ticket Holder!

Renato’s Hot Bat

BY TAYLOR MCCARTHY

To say that Ports third baseman Renato Nunez has been heating up would be an understatement. At the start of this season’s All-Star break (June 14th), Renato was hitting a pedestrian .255 to go along with 9 home runs and 29 RBI. Since the break, Nunez has been a force to be reckoned with for the Ports and a nightmare for opposing pitchers across the California League. As of July 9th, Nunez has raised his batting average to .286, along with 20 home runs and 57 RBI, an increase of 28 RBI and 11 home runs in less than three weeks. “When I step up to the plate, I have just been trying to relax and take it pitch by pitch,” said Renato. “I have been watching a lot of video and studying my opponents so that I can have a better understanding of what pitches they will be throwing.” What’s even more impressive is that in the three week span, Nunez has had three multi-HR games, an accomplishment that he had only reached twice during the entire 2013 season in Beloit. Nunez’s success has been no surprise to the Oakland Athletics who signed the Venezuelan born prospect at the young age of sixteen. At only twenty years of age,

10

Nunez continues to be a bright spot in a talented pool of prospects within Oakland’s organization. Currently ranked as the Athletics’ 4th overall prospect behind teammates Daniel Robertson and Matt Olson, Nunez’s strong 2014 season with the Ports has made his selection to the 2014 MLB Future’s Game an easy one. Nunez will be representing the World Team, and with the selection he became the second Ports player in back-to-back years to join a Futures roster (Addison Russell-2013). “I’m very proud to be named to the Futures team, it is truly an honor. Since the announcement, I have been getting calls from family and friends back home in Venezuela, I am happy to represent the world team and I’m hoping we can get the win,” stated Nunez. While many young prospects tend to go through growing pains in their transition to big league ball, Renato has steadily improved in each of his professional seasons. As a key piece of the puzzle to 2013’s Beloit Snapper’s playoff team that featured several current Ports, Renato continues to lead the Ports to a successful run to the playoffs in 2014. Collectively, the Ports have come on strong as a team in the second half of the season, thanks to several players including Nunez.

Ex-Port-ed

BY MAX BOCHMAN

On July 4th this year, while many fans were out celebrating the holiday, the Oakland A’s and Chicago Cubs agreed upon a trade sending Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the Bay Area for Billy McKinney, Addison Russell, and Dan Straily. While the names going to the Windy City may not be recognized by the casual baseball fan across the country, they certainly are familiar with Ports’ fans. Straily was a starting pitcher for the Ports in 2011 and had experienced marginal success with the A’s the past few seasons. Russell is considered one of the top prospects in baseball and had a very successful 2013 campaign with the Ports in which he put up a slash line of .277/.377/.508. And finally McKinney, who was the A’s 2013 1st round draft pick, was having a strong showing for the Ports this year before the trade and was the cover athlete for our last edition of Gameday. So the question becomes, why would the A’s trade away these talented players with whom they have developed and still have years of team control? The simple and obvious answer is that they’re trying to win now, as they seek to win their third division title in a row, and hopefully advance out of the first round for the first time since 2006. The full answer however, goes much deeper than that. For one, Russell has experienced his fair share of injuries already in his

24

professional career, and although he is a top prospect, drafted 12th by the A’s in the 2012, they would still draft another shortstop only 21 picks later. That would be Daniel Robertson, who has been the Ports’ shortstop all season and who has put up a very comparable slash line of .296/.400/.467. A’s General Manager Billy Beane certainly felt he still had a high-level shortstop prospect in his system, saying “the emergence of Robertson made it easier to part with Russell.” While it is also sad to see McKinney’s time with the Ports come to an abrupt end, it also allows more playing time to other prospects and offers Ports’ manager Ryan Christenson the ability to be more flexible with his lineup and defensive alignments. Since the trade, Christenson hasn’t gone with the same configuration twice, and it has allowed the team to see other players at different positions. For instance, on July 8th Matt Olson received his first start of the season in right field. Flexibility like that is certainly something the A’s look for in their players. Ports’ fans might remember Josh Donaldson, current A’s third baseman, as a catcher for the Ports and even A’s closer Sean Doolittle starting off as a first baseman in Stockton. Overall this trade should make Ports’ fans happy. They’ll get to see more of their favorite players develop and become more versatile as they try out new positions. Meanwhile the A’s will vie for a championship after adding two major pieces to their Major League Roster.
