marincov’s success in stockton
by taylor mccarthy
did you know... “Banner Island Ballpark” is actually an unofficial name used by fans and the administration of the Stockton ports. Its official name is the Stockton Ballpark. During the Civil War, there was an island in the San Joaquin River Delta, noted for the large “Stars and Stripes” posted by a Union supporter. This is where the name “Banner Island” originated. Although the area is no longer an island, the ballpark is located in the area in which the island existed and was known as “Banner Island.”

From Banner Island To Minute Maid Park
by taylor mccarthy
Vernon Christopher Carter, better known as “Chris”, may go down as Banner Island’s all-time favorite player. The 6 foot 4 inch righty slugger from Redwood City, CA certainly did not disappoint during his minor league tenure, especially during his magical 2008 season in Stockton. Carter attended Sierra Vista High School in Las Vegas and was originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 15th round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft. Before coming to the Athletics organization, Carter played two seasons in Chicago’s farm system before he was eventually traded to the Diamondbacks during the offseason of 2007. The deal was a part of a package trade for two-time All-Star Carlos Quentin. Just two weeks later, Carter was again traded, this time to the Oakland A’s where he was assigned to play in Stockton. It was during the 2008 season with the Ports, that Carter had a remarkable year. By the season’s end, Carter finished with a .259 batting average, 39 home runs, and 104 RBI which included breaking the Ports all-time single season home run record of 32. Carter’s leadership helped propel the Ports that season to their 11th California League Championship. To cap off the magical run, Carter was also named the California League Rookie of the Year. After 2008, Carter spent parts of the next season in Double-A Midland and Triple-A Sacramento before making short stints in Major League Baseball with the Athletics in both 2010 and 2011. By 2012 Carter was contributing to a successful Oakland A’s ball club that captured the AL West title. In 2013, Carter was traded to the Houston Astros. In the two seasons since joining Houston, Carter has continued to showcase his raw power by slugging a combined 66 home runs and 170 RBI, something Ports fans can recall easily during his days at Banner Island Ballpark as one of the California League’s most feared hitters. With the Astros currently sitting atop of the AL West, Chris Carter continues to be a driving force for them behind the plate. Although his average sits at a dismal .190, his 15 home runs and 41 RBI prove to be the reason why he is an everyday starter in Houston.

the closer With the second-half of the 2015 Stockton Ports season in full swing, several names have helped propel the Ports to the success they have experienced thus far. Names such as Athletics #2 overall prospect Franklin Barreto and #3 overall prospect Matt Chapman have certainly provided consistency in the offense category. Other players such as B.J Boyd, Tyler Marincov, and Brett Vertigan have proved to be strong assets for a young Stockton team in the thick of a playoff hunt. With all these contributing players on the roster, it’s easy to overlook the Ports’ star closer and Oklahoma State product, Brendan McCurry. As of July 7th, McCurry leads the California League with a total of 17 saves. Since the start of the season, McCurry has consistently been the Ports’ go-to reliever, being called on in several save situations to shut down opposing batters. In 37.1 innings pitched during the 2015 season, McCurry sits at a 2.41 ERA with opponents hitting just .206 against him. In a total of 18 save opportunities, McCurry has blown just one. While closing a game may prove to be very difficult for several young pitchers coming up in the minors, McCurry has a simplified approach. “When you come in a situation to close out a game, you just have to go out there with a bulldog mentality. You can’t go out there scared or they are going to eat you alive.” That “bulldog” mentality that McCurry describes has certainly helped the pitcher maintain a larger-than-life presence on the mound with a frame of 5’10’’ and weight of just 165 pounds. One of McCurry’s biggest strengths is his ability to throw a variety of pitches including a solid fastball that consistently reaches the low 90’s. It’s his fastball that McCurry has relied on as of late to continue his successful surge in the California League.

“I just got back to throwing strikes. I kind of got away from my fastball earlier in the year, and it hurt me. Since I got back to that, I’ve been doing really well,” said the Stillwater, Oklahoma native. In 2014, Stockton Ports closer Nolan Sanburn proved to be a reliable shutdown closer for the Ports and was one of the reasons why the bullpen was such a strong factor in the Ports success. In 2015, McCurry has kept that consistency rolling, something the Ports will be sure to rely on down the stretch as the playoff hunt heats up even more.

archie gilbert: a look back
by taylor mccarthy
Known as the spark plug of the 2008 Stockton Ports California League Championship team, Archie Gilbert is still talked about at Banner Island Ballpark to this day. Growing up in nearby Hayward, Archie stayed close to home when it came time to playing college ball and attended Cal State East Bay. It was here, where Archie became one of the best Division III baseball players in the country, setting nearly every record for his school with the exception of home runs and batting average (he ranks second and seventh). Despite going undrafted after college, Gilbert was signed as a free agent by the Boston Red Sox organization in 2005. After only 40 at bats due to a broken pinky finger, Gilbert was released by the Red Sox and soon signed with the Chicago White Sox organization. Despite strong play, Gilbert was not given a contract extension and ultimately signed a deal with the Oakland Athletics after being contacted by close to 10 big league teams. It was then, when Gilbert was sent to Stockton in 2008 to resume his professional career. Gilbert quickly got off to a hot start during the 2008 season by hitting an impressive .356 in April and falling just short of the California League hitting streak with 25 consecutive games during the month of May. Named to the 2008 California/Carolina League All-Star game, Gilbert drove in the only run for the California team as they eventually lost the game 3-1. At the end of the 2008 season, Archie finished with a .278 batting average, 49 RBI, and 35 stolen bases, as well as a .364 on base percentage. Ozzy Osborne’s hit song “Crazy Train” served as Gilbert’s walk up song because the beginning lyrics stated “All Aboard”, as fans eagerly waited for the 5 foot 8 inch leadoff hitter to reach base and demonstrate his speed. Archie contributed many memorable moments during the 2008 season including hitting for the cycle on June 19th and two separate 20 plus hit streaks. None, however, compared to his performance in the postseason as Gilbert was named the Cal League Postseason MVP in helping the Ports capture their 11th California League Championship. Gilbert (right) with 2008 Ports teammate Chris Carter. The title was the Ports organization’s first since signing on as an Oakland Athletics affiliate and the only championship since moving to Banner Island Ballpark, something Ports fans surely will never forget.
