Fifty years after Woodstock, the festival is particularly interesting as a celebration and embodiment of what people dreamed the sixties could be. At the end of a tumultuous decade, art and culture were redemptive spaces. Then, as now, Woodstock was a kaleidoscopic lens through which to view culture, history, and politics. This group show, ranging from quick sketches to large-scale multimedia pieces, attempts to explore the role of drawing in the works of artists in various media. The sculptures and installations in Amy Cousin’s exhibit are based on her research into rare protest ephemera, out-of-print feminist newspapers, and accounts of radical queer histories past and present. She’s inspired by the ingenuity, playfulness, and spirit of celebration that has historically been wielded by queer people to combat oppression.

September 20 – October 19 RECEPTION September 27, 5 to 9 pm As a printmaker who works primarily in black and white, Rodríguez’s signature style emphasizes simplicity and clarity. European medieval woodcuts and the great Mexican print artists such as Jose Guadalupe Posada have been influential in Rodríguez’s printmaking career. In 2002 he founded La Mano Press, an artist-run center dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of printmaking, in Los Angeles California. This exhibition is in partnership with the Tonantzin Society.

The words and ideas generated by the great American Poet and former East Lawrence resident Langston Hughes provided the inspiration for this project. Like Hughes, Stephen Johnson looks for visual rhythms in search of the ideas and associations they may elicit. 9th Street Rhythms is a celebration of East Ninth Street and its adjoining streets and alleyways.

Founded in 2001, bitforms gallery represents established, mid-career, and emerging artists critically engaged with new technologies. Spanning the rich history of media art through its current developments, the gallery’s program offers an incisive perspective on the fields of digital, internet, time-based, and new media art forms. This exhibition is a showcase of bitforms artists.

The Lawrence Arts Center and the East Lawrence Neighborhood Association came together in 2018 to create a plan to complete the community-based public art grant awarded by ArtPlace. Since then, there have been three community input sessions to gather information about what the neighborhood values and needs are for the project. Using the input from these meetings, local and regional artists created proposals and submitted them for consideration to participate in the project. We had a total of 57 proposals submitted and 15 of them have been chosen by jurors to create community-based public art around the East Lawrence neighborhood. The artists will be working to complete their projects within the next year and they will be finished by June of 2020. Protest & Print : Lawrence Print Week

Lawrence Print Week is a week-long, city-wide celebration of printmaking. It is a platform for artists, printmakers, historians, and community members to discuss the rich and integrated history of printmaking and its ability to multiply, both in message and form. Lawrence Print Week 2019 will feature artists Amy Cousins, Hannah and Blake Saunders, Artemio Rodriguez, Matt Lord and many more. Hoffman’s original story and set in Lawrence, Kansas during the Civil War era. Kelly Galloway Kindergarten With a special focus on preparing young students to develop innovation skills, the creative, arts- and play-based curriculum developed at Lawrence Arts Center sets the stage for a lifetime love of learning. Unique learning centers are custom designed daily to engage young children and to offer creative hands-on ways of learning standardized academic skills. We are constantly, actively learning and exploring core concepts through a variety of interactive experiences in a rich cultural environment. Each academic center is designed to meet your child where they are academically. Our teacher/student ratio and small group centers allow us to work to meet children’s individual learning needs and styles in and out of the classroom. Local Project Based Resident Artist Matthew Lord graduated with a BFA in illustration from the University of Kansas and is an illustrator and fine artist. His career milestones include several solo and group exhibitions, in addition to having his work featured in editorial illustrations, lectures, and workshops. Over the years, he has taken on the role of teacher, facilitator, mentor, curator, and storyteller. Matthew’s work tilts towards the absurd while incorporating elements of fantastic realism. The Elevator Project

The Elevator Project is an art installation by Matthew Lord that blends printmaking and performance and takes place between the floors of the Lawrence Arts Center. This pop-up gallery will display works with distinct prairie iconography combined with surrealistic flourishes. The artist will be on hand, serving as a guide to explain his philosophy and methods of creating art—all in the span of an elevator ride. This Project-Based Residency is generously supported by Linda Bailey.

The Lawrence Arts Center is thrilled to welcome our Ceramics and Printmaking Artists in Residence for 2019-2020. Our residents spend their year working in our studios, teaching, doing community outreach and developing a new body of work. They infuse our studios with a wealth of experience, enthusiasm, and skills, bring new ideas, and offer fresh perspectives to our community in Lawrence. Following an internationally competitive process with countless highly qualified applicants, we are delighted to announce that we have selected Ashlyn Pope as our ceramicist and Dayon Royster as our printmaker.

Ashlyn Pope | Ceramics Artist in Residence 2019-2020

Ashlyn Pope is an African American sculptor of Gullah descent. She holds a BFA in Ceramics and Printmaking from Kennesaw State University. She recently graduated with her MFA in Ceramics from Pennsylvania State University. Ashlyn is inspired to serve in her community as a champion for diversity. She does so by serving on the board for the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts as a Student Director at Large. Ashlyn mainly works with ceramics and textiles to create work rooted in personal experiences as a survivor of abuse living in a female Black body. The American system is one of constriction, for her body and for those who look like her. Ashlyn’s work is born of that nature. Through her eyes, spaces are both restricting and binding, yet they also contain hope, strength, and power. Ashlyn uses her work to address how bound or boundless we are.

Dayon Royster

| Printmaking Artist in Residence 2019-2020

Dayon Royster is an artist hailing from Richmond, VA. He received his BFA in Printmaking from East Carolina University and an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Iowa. While at ECU, he embarked on his first foray into printmaking with no idea of the path down which it would send him. Printmaking continues to captivate him because of the creative problem solving that is involved with the process; he returns day after day to try his hand at pulling a successful print. Dayon’s current work conjures universal themes of accessibility, curiosity, empowerment, self-doubt, identity, suppression, symbolism, and the “other.” Our Artist in Residence program is generously supported by everyone who raises the paddle at our Annual Art Auction to support our Visiting Artist & Resident Fund.

Announcing the 2019/20 Lawrence Ballet Theatre Company! Lawrence Ballet Theatre (LBT) is the resident pre-professional ballet company of the Lawrence Arts Center. Under the direction of Artistic Director Cynthia Crews, company members gain exposure and experience through numerous Arts Center performances and by working directly with professional guest choreographers. LBT is one of the fourteen member companies that make up the prestigious Regional Dance America/ MidStates Festival. Each year, LBT company members attend the annual RDA/Midstates Festival. The mission of LBT is to provide extensive training, performance opportunities and artistic experience to dancers seeking to develop advanced experience in preparation for a professional career in dance.
