MEMBER PRICES ARE SHOWN IN PARENTHESES WITH CLASS LISTINGS. Membership discounts cannot be used with other special offers, for preschool tuition, or for individual sessions. See page 31 for more about memberships. EARLY ENROLLMENT DISCOUNT is available to all for classes listed with red codes. To save $10 on classes you must enroll by May 17. Discount is automatically applied! FINANCIAL AID is available on a sliding scale based on household income throughout the year for youth and adults who wish to enroll in classes. Table Pieces RECEPTION May 29, 5-9PM A board and four legs is a table, function and design meant to be used. Add created objects: human, animal, insect, demons of the dark made from gemstones and pearls, marble paste, gold and silver and nails and wire and rocks. The resulting forms speak of the human condition, the joy of dance, the unseen living creatures that inhabit our lives, and the beauty of stones under our feet. This exhibit is a continuation of Dayon Royster’s pfashən-uhble naan-sints series where he uses phonetics to playfully focuses on an array of topics such as accessibility, bias, context, information, research, rules and truth. This second installment will touch on those same themes but will explore new themes such as moral superiority, the culpability of society at large, and the pros and cons of individuality.

INSIGHT Art Talk: May 27, 7PM

Several years ago, he returned home to the house where he grew up. Since that time, he has been creating paintings, drawings and photographs of his 81-year-old father. Recehntly, Michael noticed a shift in his work. He’s become fascinated with the Family Albums that his mother kept while she was alive. In an attempt to connect with a past he often felt left out of, he worked to re-record and study these memories the best way he know how; with paint. Digging through the remains of these albums has informed a painting process that oscillates between accurate visual representation and invented abstract forms. Shapes come together, forms materialize….then fall apart. As this process unfolds he desires to create a layered accumulation of paint and memories, a woven tapestry that captures a deeper and holistic view of his past and present.

Dive into cultural identity in this exhibition of thrown and handbuilt ceramic vessels. Inspired by the treatment of black bodies and women throughout history, Ashlyn narrates what it is to carry the weight of history while also emitting pride in oneself and ancestral identity. The Lawrence Arts Center Gallery will be filled with works inspired by various ceramic storage vessels blended with elements of sweetgrass baskets, an art tradition of her Gullah ancestry.

Divine Juried Exhibition June 19 - July 25 RECEPTION June 26, 5-9PM

A juried group exhibition, Divine, is comprised of artworks submitted from artists throughout the United States. The exhibition will be held in conjunction with the 2020 Free State Festival. Mark Mothersbaugh of the band DEVO will serve as juror. Art in this exhibition is inspired by the legendary drag queen, Divine.

The Silent One is a mobile audience journey through an original art installation inspired and led by Environmental Art Warrior, Memuco. The exploration begins with a colorful parade of live singers, dancers, and musicians, as they guide potential new warriors on a journey through the brink of extinction. Live performance vignettes populate each installation on the quest to halt the Climate Crisis. Audience members will experience a mixture of dance, opera, concert, story, and spectacle steeped in Mexican, Meso-American, African and Greek music and mythology as The Silent One ultimately faces Talos, the Greek Cyborg of Greed. The mission is to provide extensive training and performance opportunities, and to broaden connections to the dance community. Led by Artistic Director Cynthia Crews, company members gain exposure and experience through performances of classical ballet repertoire and original works. Dancers work directly with professional guest choreographers in addition to their work with the artistic director. LBT is a member company of the prestigious Regional Dance America/ MidStates. Join us to explore the mysteries of the night through visual, dance, and performing art. Light up the page with bioluminescent fireflies and explore the constellations in an installed planetarium. Defy all your newfound knowledge of sleeping and dreaming as you stay up and tell stories by the campfire about nocturnal creatures, both real and imagined. We’ll unpack the scientific mysteries of the earth, sun, moon, and stars. When slumber finally beckons you, explore Aboriginal Dreamtime artwork and American Indian night folklore to create vivid works of art connected to longstanding cultures. The night time is the right time for some exciting artwork!

Spend a week using applied engineering to build a variety of sculptures both outside and in an art studio. The Lawrence Arts Center is collaborating with City Playcorps’ Adventure Playground to help students design within parameters, create ephemeral and lasting sculptures, and utilize collaboration and critical thinking to build works of their own choice. Each day will focus on a shared Physics/Art principle in order to explore the many ways of engineering sculptures; build your essential 3D language as we focus on Material, Mass, Space, Center of Gravity, and Movement. This entire week is devoted to creating a playable cardboard arcade in the lobby. Each student will work on their own or with friends to create a kinetic sculpture that can be a part of an arcade installation at the end of the week. STEAM concepts focus on the forces, motion, and engineering that ensure each game works. Using the backdrop of the 1980s, artwork will be big, bold, brash, and definitely neon. Whether you’re creating Hot Shot basketball, an analog Nintendo game, or something the world has never seen, we’ll work through problems and craft solutions in this design/build workshop styled class. We’ll have a Cardboard Arcade opening with tickets, prizes, and playable artwork on the closing Friday of class. It’s on like Donkey Kong!

Now more than ever, it’s important to listen to the trees. Dig deep into the forest and find out about root systems, lichen and moss, seedpods, and all the elements of trees that make them so fascinating. In dance, visual, and performing arts we will explore the forest ecosystem looking into the animals, insects, and plants that live within the trees. Don’t be surprised if we happen upon some mythical creatures such as fairies, gnomes, and other mystical forest dwellers as we investigate the science and magic of a forest.

Konnichi wa, Tokyo! Explore the long cultural history and architectural beauty of Japan while planning, designing, and engineering a kid-sized, cardboard box metropolis. Students apply their imaginations to fill in the city with artwork, culture, and function. Using Tokyo as an example, we will look at urban planning and design and how it shapes the world we live in. Students gain an appreciation for shape, form, and proportion as they apply these principles to their expanding city. The real magic happens as students take ownership of their structures, identities, and culture within the city. The cardboard city is installed in the lobby for all to enjoy with a public opening on the last day of camp that aligns with Final Friday.

Explore animals and ecosystems across the world! Trace the taxonomy of wildlife and where these beautiful creatures live in a weeklong animal extravaganza. In performing arts and dance, students will move, script, and perform work that emphasizes the importance of protecting wildlife. Learn to move like animals as you study the aspects of their lives. STEAM principles include biology, animal preservation, endangered species, and ecosystems. In visual arts we will work together to bring 2D and 3D animal art together in a giant interlinking preserve in the lobby. Come on all you wild things, let’s get together and show the world how important our animals are!

The Kelly Galloway Arts-Based Kindergarten focuses on preparing young students to develop innovation skills. The creative, artsand play-based Kindergarten curriculum developed at the Arts Center sets the stage for a lifetime love of learning. Unique learning centers are custom-designed daily to engage young children and to offer creative, hands-on ways of learning standardized academic skills. We are designed to meet your child where they are academically. Our teacher/student ratio and small group centers allow us to work to meet childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s individual learning needs and styles in and out of the classroom.

For children ages 2 years 10 months to 5 years old. Children must be fully potty trained.
