Three Children You Helped Through the Festival of Trees
Through our Foster Care Program, the “Johnson” family has opened their home and their hearts to three drug-exposed babies. The first baby, “Tammy”, was placed with them initially with a plan for her to reintegrate with her natural family. When it became clear that that was not going to be possible, the “Johnson’s” asked to be an adoptive resource for her, and her adoption was finalized in 2008. Also in 2008, this wonderful family accepted placement of a newborn baby boy, “Tom,” who came to them in Police Protective Custody, straight from the hospital. Initially there was a plan to reintegrate “Tom” with his birth mother, but eventually his birth mother asked the “Johnson’s” if they would adopt “Tom” in an open adoption arrangement, allowing continued contact with the birth mother as “Tom” grew. The “Johnson’s” had become very attached to both “Tom” and his birth mother, and they were happy to add “Tom” to their family when his adoption was finalized in 2011. In 2012, a second baby boy was born to “Tom’s” birth mother, and the second boy, “Mike” was also placed with the “Johnson’s” in Police Protective Custody, straight from the hospital. Again, the initial plan for reintegration was eventually changed, and “Mike’s” adoption by the “Johnson’s” will hopefully be finalized by the end of this year. This last adoption will allow these two natural siblings, “Tom” and “Mike,” to have the same forever family, which also includes an older sister, a dog, a cat, and two birds! Although these children all were exposed to drugs prior to their birth, their parents have been very responsive to their needs, and the children are thriving. We commend this family for their commitment to these very special children!
The Shelter, Inc.’s Thirteenth Annual
Unsung Hero Award
Each year The Shelter, Inc., recognizes a group or person in the community who has gone to extraordinary lengths to help the children and families we serve. This year Alicia Lawrence is being recognized as our Unsung Hero. Alicia is a therapist who has been working with children and families for over 14 years in our community. She has been of particular help to the clients we serve in our Pre-Filing Diversion/Conditions and Release Program and our High School Truancy Prevention/Diversion Program. She approaches each child or family with a unique understanding of their situation, and she focuses on their strengths while creating a safe environment for clients to ask for help. She has always gone above and beyond, often seeing children and families in last minute emergencies. She genuinely cares about her clients, their well-being, and their success. We are, then, recognizing Alicia Lawrence as our Unsung Hero this year, for her enthusiasm, compassion for others, and her continued work in our community.
