Local News New Management at Stotfold Conservative Club
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves to those that are not yet aware that there is new management at Stotfold Conservative Club. Our names are Mick Ball and Beverley Swain and we took on our exciting new roles at the end of November last year. We both live in Biggleswade but have previously lived in Stotfold with two of our four children having attended Pippins and started their school journey at Roecroft Lower School. For the last 3 years Mick has been the steward at Biggleswade Conservative Club and Beverley co-ordinated the weddings and private parties. Since joining Stotfold Conservative Club, we have been immensely impressed by the wonderfully warm and supportive welcome that we have received from all the lovely staff and members. We are thoroughly enjoying our new roles and have had lots going on at the club from twice monthly live music, fortnightly Bingo, Poker nights and carpet bowls to the delicious new menu including weekly specials expertly prepared by our new chef. We have lots planned to for the coming months and we are looking forward to many events such as live music from Leech, Fishing for Robots and Two Tones Beyond, fabulous evening of comedy and glamour with Bella Beserk and a Wedding Fayre alongside our regular features.
We are extremely keen to have more charitable events, to make use of our large hall for the community and to develop good links with local businesses. Don’t forget, Non members are welcome on Tuesday for our fantastic £5 meal deal and are also able to attend and participate in bingo / poker on Monday nights. Bev & Mick take over the helm at the Stotfold Check our facebook page for more details. - We look forward to seeing you soon. Conservative Club

Pix Brook Academy ‘overwhelmed’ by community response to Ukraine emergency appeal Pix Brook Academy in Stotfold has been “overwhelmed” by the generosity of its school community after launching an urgent appeal to help the people of Ukraine. The academy, part of the Bedfordshire Schools Trust, joined forces with Stotfold-based charity The Need Project to collect essential items, such as clothes, toiletries and children’s toys.
By Monday morning (7th March), the school hall was filled with cardboard boxes and carrier bags crammed with donations – ready for a lunchtime pick-up by charity volunteers. The items will now be taken over to Poland by lorry, to help refugees who have crossed the border into that country to escape the war. More than two million people have so far fled Principal Steve Adams helping to their homes in Ukraine for neighbouring countries as the Russian invasion intensifies. oversee and load the donations.
Principal Steve Adams said: “It is truly remarkable to see such generosity from the Pix Brook community. Parents have gone above and beyond in their response to the appeal to help.
“What started as a simple question in school about what we might do has culminated in support from The Need Project and an overwhelming desire from our community to try to support the people of Ukraine.”

Local News Woody’s Wildlife Rescue Centre: Open All Hours
Something very special is happening in a residential property in Stotfold. It is home to Woody’s Wildlife Rescue Centre. Run by Suzanne Wood, staffed by volunteers and supported entirely by donations, it is a lifeline for sick, orphaned and injured wildlife. At the time of writing Woody’s is home to 53 hedgehogs; 32 in a shed in cages and carrying cages, 11 in various outside cages and 10 in the house…as well as a fawn orphaned as a new-born and umpteen birds of all varieties. Over the course of the Summer, Woody’s can expect to care for about 20 orphaned fox cubs, fawns, rabbits, swans, injured birds of prey as well as baby swallows and house martins which fall out of the nest.
Woody’s also plays an important role in the Community. In a world where there seems to be so much bad news beyond our control, Woody’s enables local people to make a difference in their local area. Whether it is dropping off newspapers once they have been Picture taken by K Mackenzie at read (these are always wanted as bedding for animals) or unneeded small towels, everything helps. Also young people who care about the nature and the environment can Woody’s. “roll up their sleeves” at Woody’s, often through The Princes Trust or as part of the DofE volunteering. Students in animalrelated subjects get hands on practical experience and training from Suzanne, who is one of the best. Woody’s is approved by four local vets and is an early adopter of the Wildlife Care Badge which aims to establish consistent quality of care and high welfare standards for all wildlife casualties throughout UK Rescues. Suzanne also works closely with the RSPB and RSPCA and is registered with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. Woody’s is bursting at the seams and is trying to raise £10,000 for a new unit to increase the number of casualties it can safely treat. The new unit would be larger, temperature controlled, with hot and cold water and equipped with incubators and other much-needed facilities. Bronwyn is a volunteer at Woody’s and has set up a “go fund me” fund-raising appeal. Please consider if you can help: gofund.me/f91c6be5 https://www.facebook.com/woodyswildrescue
as
Our wildlife in in trouble. Even if you cannot support Woody’s at the current time, you can make a difference in your own garden by leaving wild areas, ensuring ways in and out of your garden (“hedgehog highways”), not using pesticides or slug pellets (the latter blind or kill hedgehogs) and providing water for thirsty animals. Even something simple as planting lavender in a pot will help hungry bees.

Dear Editor, I am trying to trace a lady named Ann who used to work at Eastern Gas, Arlesey during the 1980's. I would very much like to get back in touch with Ann as she was a great friend to both myself and my husband. I believe she lived along Arlesey Road but cannot be certain. If you know Ann or maybe you are Ann, please get in touch with the Stotfold News Magazine on 01462 731986 and they will put us back in touch. Many thanks, Mr & Mrs Henshaw.

Dear Editor, Maybe in common with other hard pressed tax payers I was gobsmacked to receive this years Council Tax demand showing an increase in excess of 14% for Stotfold Town Council. Possibly through the Stotfold News magazine a member of STC could go into print to justify this exorbitant increase. Malcolm Roberts Dear Editor, I just wanted to write an email to see if you could post in your magazine a huge thank you to a stranger who stopped to do a good deed. A gentleman on Sunday 3rd April at around 10 am stopped in his silver car near The Green in Stotfold to help myself and my 2 young children across the road and in the process may have hurt himself. I want to apologise if he did hurt himself and also say thank you. It is nice to know they're are still people in the world willing to help complete strangers. He was a true gentleman I just hope he is OK. If he could let us know he is ok I would be grateful as I have been worrying about him since. Kind Regards Terri Charles www.stotfoldandarleseynews.co.uk

Poppies & Poppyfields Nursery
Spring is knocking at our door and bringing beautiful opportunities for our children to enjoy! We have been looking at new life and growth, including frogs, sheep, and lambs. We have been exploring flowers and seed planting and grew ‘Sweet Potato’ characters which gave children opportunity to understand what plants need to grow. We have also compared heights; of ourselves and buildings which was great fun as children created tall structures! We have welcomed new families into Poppies life this term and are enjoying getting to know them. New children are settling well and getting to know our gardens, builder’s yards and play spaces. Staff have all researched mini ‘Topic Ideas’, which children are being introduced to, including ‘large scale construction’, ‘fun with water’, ‘music’, ‘loose parts’ and ‘concepts of Reggio Emilia’. These have added an even greater depth of opportunities for our children’s enquiring minds! Our breakfast and after school children have been equally busy, with sports activities, den building and fun with Spring inspired paints and crafts!

News from Roecroft
Lower School
I hope you all enjoyed a restful Easter period with friends and family and indulged in treats aplenty. The whole school community enjoyed the two weeks of rest and have started the summer term with a bang, everyone is raring to go and already enjoying their learning. We are very much looking forward to a sunny summer term filled with the majority of our normal events and trips; welcoming our families back into school for some of these will be a wonderful feeling. This term we have an update from our Key Stage 2 team: In Year 3, we finished the Spring term with our first school trip of the year. The whole cohort made the trip to Queen’s Park in Bedford to visit three places of worship – a Gurdwara, Mosque and Church. This is a fantastic trip and one the school has been undertaking for many years now. It helps the children gain a better understanding of different religions and traditions and really helps bring the R.E. curriculum to life. In History, the children have been learning about the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. The children loved learning about Viking warriors and the longboats they travelled in. We read several Viking stories and legends, and the children wrote their own versions of ‘Thor and the Stolen Hammer’. The children have also been learning about food and nutrition. Using the school’s food technology room, the children made dough and then created their own pizzas. Everyone had a great time and the pizzas tasted delicious!
Year 4 have had an exciting start to summer term and their last term at Roecroft. In History, we are now exploring the ancient Egyptians. We started our topic with a fabulous Egyptian day, where the children had great fun being immersed in the period and exploring artefacts. In English, the children have loved reading ‘Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx’ and using their new-found knowledge to create their own mysterious Egyptian myths. We also went on our two-day residential trip to Cuffley Camp! It was a brilliant experience staying in woodland pods and taking part in activities such as climbing and fire lighting. The children have made precious memories and relished the chance to stay away from home for the first time with all their school friends. We were so glad we could offer them this experience again this year. The children continue to have lots to look forward to in the coming months, as well as celebrating the end of their time at Roecroft, we have the Queen’s Jubilee to celebrate, our annual dance morning and the chance to complete a Bikeability training course in July.

Etonbury Academy
It doesn’t seem possible that we are now at the end of the Spring Term, with our Junior children approaching their final primary assessments and our Year 11s taking their GCSE examinations. Some of our Year 11s have already started their practical examinations in Hospitality and Catering, creating ‘an accompaniment for a Bistro’. The students showed great confidence under such controlled and pressured conditions, producing dishes to a very high standard.
Etonbury Juniors immersed themselves in World Book Day. There were Harry Potters, Gangster Grannies, Where's Wallies and Matildas all running around the playground and sharing extracts of their books. In sport, the Year 10 boys made the National Schools Cup Semi Finals in football. We played Truro School (Cornwall) in the quarter finals with a great win, followed by defeat in the semi-final game against Buckswood Football Academy (Kent). There was a fantastic atmosphere with students, staff and parents on the sidelines supporting them all the way. Also in sport our Year 10 netballers finished the season undefeated, winning every game! Further successes this month include our Vex Robotics Club have made the finals in their national competition, our Spring Term intervention programme students have graduated, and our next cohort of children have been enrolled at The Brilliant Club. This is another exciting opportunity for our students to engage in learning that will help them access some of the most competitive universities and receive expert teaching from university lecturers. The Art Department has been creating displays in the school showcasing the amazing 3D Party Animal clay models made by our students. We are looking forward to our community getting the opportunity to see this amazing work at our Art Exhibition in the Summer Term. Our work with Early Careers Teachers has received brilliant feedback from a Quality Assurance assessment this month. We are very proud of the programme of support we provide our new teachers and welcome this recognition. Our PE Department also underwent a review and we were delighted to hear of the incredibly high standards of work being reported. A big thank you to the volunteers of The NEED Project who supported our second hand uniform sale at their centre in Stotfold. This event highlighted to our Etonbury Community the fantastic work of this important charity, as well as enabled parents to recycle, swap and purchase the uniform. Well done to our students Izzy, Kaysie-Rose, Erin and Emma for preparing for the sale. With our growth from Primary through to GCSE firmly established, we are now looking forward to the children remaining with us into Sixth Form from September 2023. If you have moved into the area, or are looking for a new school for your child, please do get in touch as we would be delighted to welcome you for a personal tour. 01462 730391 etaoffice@bestacademies.org.uk

Pix Brook Academy
The end of another busy time at PBA. As is always the case in schools we are often trying to balance the “mundane” but necessary activities necessary to keep the school moving forward with the more exciting experiences that make schools vibrant places to learn.
Looking back over this month it has been super busy and has included a full range of learning opportunities for our pupils. Early on in the term we undertook a full range of SATs mocks. The Y6 pupils performed extremely well and this information and learning has formed the bedrock of our teaching of English and Maths. Interventions lessons are happening, some of the pupils are even unlucky enough to be taught by me! We also have a programme of Easter school revision lessons for Y6 during the first and second week of the Easter Break. Staff have offered their time to come in and work with our pupils and I know this will be a valuable learning experience. Pupils have also benefitted from World book day; Red Nose Day; Science week (which was the most marvellous event and for which I am immensely grateful to our parents and community); the Y5 trip to the Space Centre; The Y6 Geobus fossil experience in addition to too many sporting events to count. If these activities are combined with the school Safeguarding audit (which went STOTFOLD HOME MAINTENANCE SERVICES extremely well); Y5 parents evening, two Y6 parents’ evenings; a review of reading; science and Maths at the school and a learning walk undertaken by governors you can see why many staff are feeling ready for the Easter break. The fact that we have managed to maintain our broad offer of curricular and extra-curricular experiences is testament to the work of staff and pupils at the school.
Next month will be the same. The work to prepare our pupils for the next step in their education, in addition to the preparation for September and our new cohort of pupils will ramp up. That is the nature of education and keeps us all on our toes. Until next month Steve Adams Principal.

Art Club
Welcome to the latest news from Stotfold Art Club
The connection between Stotfold Watermill and the Art group goes back to around 2003, when fundraising for the mill's restoration was underway. Paintings were for sale at open days and events, with a contribution to mill funds.
When Randall's tea room opened in 2006, we were asked to create the ambience of a traditional English tea room, with small paintings on the beams and larger ones around the walls. Many of these prints and paintings were of local scenes and proved very popular. Then, as now, 25% of sales goes to mill funds, - a total of over £3000 to date. So it was with great pleasure that we were able to put up a display recently When you are enjoying a cuppa and a cake this summer in the mill, please admire the work (and even buy a painting!)
We are thrilled that the Steam fayre is going ahead this year, why not take the opportunity to pop in to the Mill and see some of our artwork for yourself.

Methodist Church
There’s a line from old hymn “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation” which has been resonating with me these months. It is: “when the godless do triumph, all virtue confounding”
I find people are confounded by the events in the news by a war against innocent people. We are confounded because the godless do triumph or at least seem to be. We may feel anger or despair or both. Your reaction to Ukraine’s invasion might be like mine one that pushes me down, one in which I find much to despair about, certainly much to pray about. Or your reaction might be one of anger, of wanting revenge for children and parents caught in the war. But neither despair nor anger will help us. What’s really helped me is the generosity I’ve seen, on the news across Europe, and closer to home in the offering of sanctuary, and in the raising of funds. I am blessed by seeing some of this in action in community groups and local churches, raising thousands of pounds for the relief effort.
Such positive action brings joy and also brings goodness. It reminds me of next line in that same hymn, which says that God “Sheddeth his light, [&] Chaseth the horrors of night”. God bless all of you in your acts of generosity, helping people through these difficult days. May brings Christian Aid Week fundraising efforts from the Stotfold Churches, with lots of different activities planned. The Methodist Church coffee morning on the 7th of May will be devoted to this cause. This year’s Christian Aid Week’s appeal is committed to helping some of the world’s poorest people. Do support if you can. Thank you.
Monday Club extends a warm welcome for new friends, 2pm to 3:30pm every week, with Scrabble and refreshments. Coffee morning, with home made cakes and goods, is the first Saturday of the month 10am to 11:30, with this month’s takings going to Christian Aid. We also welcome you to Sunday worship, 10am to 11am, with refreshments. News from King’s
Baptist Church
Recently we have been thinking about what it means to be fruitful, to have a fruitful life. Some people may think the fruit of a good life is money, education, popularity, status, success, skills, connections, possessions, or fame. Jesus said we are like branches connected to a vine. So, when the branches remain connected into the vine, they will produce grapes. And Jesus said that if we remain, or abide, in him, we will also bear fruit— James’s Carpentry the fruit that God wants us to produce. We might say that fruitfulness is the inevitable & General Handyman outcome of an interior spiritual life with Jesus.

Now Jesus also said that there are false or fake ‘vines’ that we might be attached to, or attracted to. Even religion can be ‘wrong’. We can be consumers of religious events and practices, yet we are spiritually empty and have no good fruit to show. Our ‘vine’ should be Jesus alone.
Author Myles Monroe wrote these words: “…Don’t fall for the limitations of the world—the lies and deceptions of the lower nature. Find your Source and get connected. Then stay connected. God has chosen you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Abide in Christ, and the Father will give you whatever you wish. Refuse to live below your privileged potential. Reach for the fruit that are still within the branches of your life. Drink deep from the vine and let your life feed others.” May we all abide in Jesus, and may we all know the comforting presence and the life-changing power of God.

Rotary Club
Baldock Rotary has taken the first steps to set up a Satellite Club, which would operate alongside the traditional club. The aims of a Satellite Club are to attract younger members and have greater diversity and inclusivity. We now need to extend that interest.
So if you are the type of person who is in a position to “give something back” to the Community, we would love to hear from you. Our activities and aims can be summarised as; Fundraising for charitable causes, Support for the local Community, Aid for international disasters, Protecting the Environment as well as making new friends and have fun If you are interested in being part of this new venture please contact our Membership Secretary, Paul Redwood 07999 350990 paul49redwood@gmail.com

Mental Health Matters Saying ‘No’ I am aware of a collective difficulty around saying no.
- Joli Loach
The ability to use the word ‘no’ appropriately and confidently is vital to our mental and emotional health. ‘No’ is a boundary, whose purpose is to protect what is beyond it; the self. To maintain responsibility for all parts of our health we must recognise and manage our daily capacity for functioning.
CLAIRE’S CAT SITTING
We all have strengths, weaknesses, time, talents, responsibilities, challenges, blessings, feelings, thoughts, needs and limitations. In recognising the legitimacy of these, we can take better care of ourselves when balancing the give and take of daily living. This subsequently enables us to care for others from a healthier place.
Stotfold based cat sitting service
Typically our culture congratulates people ‘who always put others first’. We are less likely to acknowledge that such people may be secretly dying of the resentment that accompanies prolonged unmet needs. To clarify, I am not suggesting the opposite position of always putting self first. It is not always other or always self but a balance of sometimes prioritising self and sometimes other.
Now in our 10th year!
Your cats looked after in your own home while you are away, giving you complete peace of mind.I am fully insured & can feed your cats once or twice a day. Other small animals can also be catered for.
In my work as a Psychotherapist I regularly hear how difficult many people find it to say ‘no’, whether to the boss with unreasonable expectations or within personal relationships. To preserve mental and emotional health which impact physical health, we must recognise our limitations and learn when to put limits on others demands by saying ‘no’. When we respect the legitimacy of our own needs and limitations, we can say no to others before reaching crisis point. We do not need to explain, justify or enter in to the type of negotiations that invite the other to talk us out of our no. No is no. The more solid and honest our ‘no’, the more heartfelt our ‘yes’ can become.

Stotfold Local Plan - Have Your Say STOTFOLD & ASTWICK NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN
The most vital part of our Neighbourhood is YOU! Every single person in this town is as important as the next! Every time you shut the door, the world around it still evolves, and so the small area of the world that we live in has an opportunity to benefit and develop.Stotfold Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group is requesting your input to help guide the process and ultimately help us form a neighbourhood plan for our future. As a town, all residents have a view on things that affect the area we live in. They may excite you or frustrate you. It may be the development of new housing and the provision of services such as schools or doctors that causes us some concern. Potentially the development of housing could see us become closer to our neighbouring towns and villages. It could be that the facilities we already have within the town need to be adapted or enhanced. The Neighbourhood Plan Group has been set up to collate the aspirations of a town into a formal plan, so please come along to a future meeting and let us know your views, take part and enable us to assist the community in its development. Come along and help us shape the future Stotfold! Dates for our next meeting can be found on the Town Council website. See you there!

May/June meeting days are 4th and 18th May and 1st, 15th, 29th June. The first club book read for May is “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens. (A movie of the book is due for release in July this year.)

This wonderful photogrpah was sent in to us by Josie Diffell and dates back to the early 1900’s. Can you tell where in Stotfold this building used to be? Thank you to everyone that has sent us in their old photos, we are getting round to using them, we promise!
