WELCOME

TO ST. PETE PRIDE 2011

I

t is my honor to welcome you to the 9th Annual St. Pete Pride Festival. I would like to begin by offering a special thank you to all the people who volunteer their time and efforts to make this day happen. To my fellow board members, every one of our loyal volunteers and to our sponsors—on behalf of our community, I want to thank you for your support. Most may not realize the dedication and hard work that goes into this event. It is a year-long process that requires countless hours of preparation. I encourage each and every one of you who enjoy St. Pete Pride to get involved with our organization. Our meetings are always open to the public and we truly value new ideas and contributions. I

would also like to especially thank our Executive Director, Chris Rudisill, for his days in and days out hard work. He has been a Godsend. I encourage all in our community to take special note of our sponsors. All of us should strive to patronize these sponsors and let them know how excited we are that they are supportive of our causes. It is my belief that things are getting better for all of us in the LGBT community. Let’s join together and continue to push forward the causes that will make us equal and make all our lives better. Our theme this year is “One Day...” What exactly does this mean? Our community is diverse and full of a complicated set of individuals, all with their own agenda and beliefs. I want to challenge each of you to think about your “One Day.” I challenge you to think

about what actions you can take and what actions we as a community can take to achieve our “One Day,” and then make this your mission throughout the coming year. There will be a team of volunteers roaming the Street Festival this year inquiring about your “One Day.” Please share your ideas with our volunteers so we can all work toward that “one day” we are truly equal. I hope you enjoy this year’s Street Festival and that you support as many of St. Pete Pride’s events throughout the year as possible. We are a non-profit organization and we spread your support among many great area causes. Be proud, be happy, and enjoy this “One Day” for Pride and Equality.

THAN K YOU ,

uring our planning of this year’s theme, one of our board members introduced me to a song by Jewish reggae musician Matisyahu—“One Day.” It’s a song of hope and optimism for a brighter future. Today we are surrounded by war, sorrow, hate and destruction. It seems that every day we are warned of a quickly approaching Doomsday. It often seems like there’s not much hope out there anymore. We’re all too busy tearing down someone else to think of a brighter way. Matisyahu speaks of a day free of wars and evil—“one day we’ll all be free and proud to be under the same sun singing songs of freedom.” It’s the peace theme for a new generation. It got us thinking—what’s our “One Day?” We all wish for peace on earth, end to war, famine and disease. That’s a given, but what about the rest? As gay activists make strides toward greater equality each day, many of us can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Yet, we must have the hope and the strength to continue the fight and that hope stems from our dreams and our goals. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made history as a civil rights champion. His “I Have a Dream” speech has been heard around the world and remains one of the most inspiring orations in American history. After every utterance of, “I have a dream,” came the words, “one day.” “I have a dream that one soldiers will be able to serve openly and day this nation will rise up and live out the honestly, without fear or persecution. One true meaning of its creed: We hold these day our children will be safe from bullying truths to be self-evident, that all men are and torment. One day gay and lesbian created equal.” King spoke to the future—a couples will be able to walk hand in hand future that he knew could exist and one that without odd stares from passersby. One would be safer, better and stronger than day I’ll be able to legally marry my partner that day in 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln anywhere in the world. Our month-long recognition of LGBT Pride is important for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community of St. Petersburg and the entire state of Florida. I am proud to be a part of such a thriving and loving community. I send best wishes and my hope that each person who participates enjoys all the fun and walks away inspired. I thank the Board of Directors and volunteers who have worked so hard to organize this celebration of our Pride!

ooking back on his life, St. Petersburg resident Dan Avery has seen things he never thought would happen in his lifetime. He remembers the time when gay bars were constantly raided by police, gay men were targeted on the streets and the thought of two people of the same gender getting married wasn’t even seen as a point of discussion. “If the me of today could go back in time and tell my younger counterpart about the progress we’ve made, the younger me wouldn’t believe it,” the 76-year-old says. “It’s truly amazing how far we’ve come.” Avery isn’t alone when it comes to realizing the strides made toward LGBT equality—and that’s why hope is still alive in the LGBT community for full inclusion, “One Day.” “We chose ‘One Day…’ as our theme because it represents hope that LGBT people will be fully integrated into an equal society,” says St. Pete Pride Executive Director Chris Rudisill. “One day we know we’ll all truly be treated equally.” The Ninth Annual St. Pete Pride is expected to break attendance records again this year when more than 80,000 people descend upon Central Avenue on June 25. While people are enjoying themselves and celebrating the community, many hold out hope for a future unimagined just a few decades ago. For some, getting to that “one day” begins within the LGBT community. “I want to see complete and utter equality

St. Pete PRiDe 2011

within our community and the ability to set aside our own differences for the purpose of gaining unconditional equality in the ‘mainstream’ world,” says Kori Stevens, Miss St. Pete Pride 2010. “It is my heartfelt belief that we, as a community, cannot accomplish anything until we respect each other. Until then, we really can’t expect anyone else to give us the respect that we deserve and fight for.” Michael Keeffe, president of Transgender FORGE, has similar hopes “One day in the future I’d like to see full inclusiveness within the LGBT community,” he says. “We still have hurdles within the community to overcome concerning acceptance of each other.” Progress has been made, which history has made evident. But there are too many states— including Florida—that don’t recognize LGBT equality, which is frustrating to many. “I know that one day I want to marry the woman of my dreams, whoever that is,” says Shelby Evans, a Clearwater lesbian. “I know technically I can do that in some states, but I want it to be truly recognized by our country, not just a few states.” The 25-year-old veterinary tech says that she has dated a few women but is waiting for “the right one” before making a major commitment. When that one right woman is found, however, she’ll happily take that plunge. “I don’t see myself as any different than my parents,” Evans says. “They have been married

for nearly 40 years and I know that’s what I want—and I want my government to want that for me too.” According to a Washington Post/ABC News poll conducted in March 2011, a majority of Americans now favor same-sex marriage, leading many to think marriage equality is inevitable for the United States. However, marriage isn’t even on the mind of Trent Webb, who lives in Bradenton. The Florida native simply wants to share a tender moment with his partner without attracting unwanted attention. “I want to know why I can’t hold my husband’s hand without getting strange looks in the mall,” says Webb. “It’s 2011; you would think that by now a couple holding hands wouldn’t turn anyone’s head. One day I hope that simple displays of affection between couples of the same-sex are viewed no differently than those of heterosexual couples.” The key to seeing Webb’s dream come true begins with younger generations, according to St. Petersburg District 5 City Councilman Steve Kornell, who has worked with youth throughout his career. “I would like to see a world where all children grow up proud of who they are,” the out councilman says. “A world where children know they are valued and when they become adults they will have full equality.”

mOre than just a day

While many are hopeful for full equality, “one day,” St. Pete Pride is often thought of—incorrectly—as a one-day or oneweekend event. “We do events and fundraising throughout the year,” says St. Pete Pride Executive Director Chris Rudisill. “It’s about giving back.” St. Pete Pride holds two major fundraising events a year—Taste of Pride in the spring and its Red and Green Ball in December. Money raised not only helps fund the annual Street Festival in June, but several scholarship programs that benefit groups throughout Tampa Bay. But it’s not all about money—at the root of Pride is acceptance, according to St. Pete Pride President Scott Turner. “Each year we hear people talk about how great it felt to be out at the street festival where they could completely be themselves,” Turner says. “We want them to have that feeling throughout the year.” As more and more young people attend St. Pete Pride’s June events, organizers see the impact the organization can have on the future of the city, state and the country. “When someone walks past you in the heat of the day and says, ‘thank you,’ it’s an amazing feeling,” Turner says. “It reminds us why we do what we do and this is one of the strongest, most active boards we’ve had. It’s an amazing group of people from St. Petersburg and Tampa. It shows how a community can come together.” To see the year-round list of events offered by St. Pete Pride, visit StPetePride. com. | l |

Bertrand Delanoe is elected mayor of Paris, making it the first world capital with an openly gay mayor.

2002

Talk-show host Rosie O’Donnell comes out, and becomes an outspoken advocate for LGBT equality.

2003

In Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court rules that sodomy laws are unconstitutional, holding that “Liberty presumes an autonomy of self that includes freedom of thought, belief, expression, and certain intimate conduct.” Rev. V. Gene Robinson is named Bishop for the Diocese of New Hampshire, becoming the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church in the United States, and causing a rift in the worldwide church.

2004

Massachusetts is the first state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex partners.

2005

A year after the Canadian Supreme Court rules that same-sex marriage is constitutional, the House of Commons and Senate extend marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples.

2007

The City of Largo, Fla., fires its City Manager Steve Stanton after he announces plans to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Stanton successfully transitions to become Susan Stanton and is now the City Manager of Lake Worth, Fla.

2008

The California Supreme Court rules that it is unconstitutional to deny same-sex couples equal marriage rights, making California the second state to legalize same-sex marriage. 18,000 marriages are performed before voters pass Proposition 8, banning same-sex marriage in California. In 2010, a federal judge ruled that Prop 8 is unconstitutional and the legislation is embroiled in a court fight that is destined for the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court of Connecticut rules that same-sex couples have the right to marry. For the first time a Florida judge rules that the state’s ban on gays and lesbians adopting is unconstitutional. Two other judges make similar rulings in 2009 and 2010. Sam Adams is elected mayor of Portland, Oregon, making it the largest American city to choose an openly gay mayor. Adams is later embroiled in a sex scandal.

More than 60% of voters in Florida pass Amendment 2, banning same-sex marriage and its “substantial equivalent” throughout the state. The Supreme Court of Connecticut rules that same-sex couples have the right to marry.

2009

Iceland elects Johanna Siguroardottir, the first openly head of government in the world. In a referendum held later in the year, Siguroardottir is reelected. The Iowa Supreme Court unanimously rejects the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, becoming the third state—and the first Midwest state—to authorize same-sex marriage. Vermont becomes the first state to legalize same-sex marriage by an act of legislation. Maine and New Hampshire become the fourth and fifth states to approve same-sex marriage but voters in Maine defeat the initiative. New York legislators reject a marriage equality law that would have made same-sex marriage legal. The citizens of Houston, Tex., elect Annise Parker, making her the first lesbian mayor of a major U.S. city.

2010

Washington, D.C. legalizes same-sex marriage. Florida Gov. Charlie Crist announces the

state will no longer enforce its threedecades-old ban on gays and lesbians adopting. President Barack Obama signs legislation directing the U.S. Military to phase out Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. A rash of LGBT teen suicides puts a new focus on school bullying and launches the “It Gets Better Project” on YouTube. Despite unethical tactics by a large church, Gainesville, Fla., narrowly elects Craig Lowe as its first openly gay mayor.

2011

The Defense of Marriage Act faces its first major challenge when the Obama administration announces it will no longer fight in favor

of the law outlawing same-sex marriage. Later in the year the law firm Congress hires to defend the constitutionality of the law backs out, saying it didn’t vet the case enough before it decided to take on the controversial fight. Federal Judge Vaughn Walker, who ruled California’s Proposition 8 was unconstitutional, comes out of the closet. For the first time, a U.S. Federal Government official intervenes in a gay man’s deportation case when Attorney General Eric Holder suggested Wilson Dorman be considered legal because of his New Jersey civil union to his partner. The State of Illinois approves civil unions.

St. Pete Pride 2011 Grand Marshal Rev. Troy Perry, right, and his partner Phillip De Blieck, were married in Canada in 2003.

ev. Troy Perry has held numerous titles in his illustrious career. The founder of the Metropolitan Community Church was appointed by President Bill Clinton as an official delegate to the White House Conference on Hate Crimes and the Conference on AIDS, he is a founder of Christopher Street West—Los Angeles’ LGBT Pride celebration—and is the author of several books. Today he can add a new title to his resume—St. Pete Pride 2011 Grand Marshal. “I’m thrilled that in my home state, one of the Pride events finally invited me to be grand marshal,” the seventh-generation Floridian said from his California home. “I can’t wait to say hello to my state again.” Perry has lived in California for 38 years but was born in Tallahassee. He became a licensed Baptist minister in rural Florida at the age of 15 in 1955. The 71-year-old has seen a lifetime of

LGBT history unfold since then—so it makes perfect sense that he is the grand marshal for the ninth annual St. Pete Pride festival with the theme, “One Day…” “I’m a total optimist,” Perry says. “Things are changing in our community. Today is a new day and people are taking up for us. People understand the injustice of one group not having rights.” Perry believes that full marriage equality is inevitable and that it will happen “one day” in his lifetime. We just have to hold on to hope.

esides appearing in the annual St. Pete Pride Promenade during the Street Festival on Saturday, June 25, Rev. Troy Perry plans to take advantage of his weekend-long stay in St. Petersburg to speak with members within and outside the LGBT community. Perr y is excited to speak to MCC denominations and LGBT suppor ters because it does more to encourage his community than to argue with those who fight LGBT equality. “I say speak to the denominations, not to the village idiots,” Perry says. “We want our churches to be open and affirming. I know what the scripture says and I don’t want to stand there and scream at people or get screamed at.” Arguing with protestors at Pride, for example, will only waste time and frustrate all involved, Perry believes. He says the best thing we can do as a community is ignore those who aggressively oppose us. “I have a mouth on me too,” he says with a laugh. “But that just won’t accomplish anything.”

Dinner with rev. troy perry

Friday, June 24 The night before the street festival, on Friday, June 24, Perry will host a special 7 p.m. dinner engagement at the Poynter Institute at 801 Third St. S., in St. Petersburg. Tickets are $100 apiece or $1,000 for a table for eight, which includes name recognition, entry into a drawing for a Caribbean Cruise and two Commemorative T- s h i r t s . ir Ari Gold feels like his takeover of Florida will fi nally be complete once he performs at the 2011 St. Pete Pride Street Festival. This will mark the fi rst time the award-winning recording artist has performed in St. Petersburg, even though he has performed on stages in other major cities of the Sunshine State. “I’ve done Key West, Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami and Fort Lauderdale,” Gold says from his home in New York. “So it’s a complete picture after St. Pete Pride.” Gold’s newest single, “Make My Body Rock,” from his new CD Between the Spirit & the Flesh is taking LOGO by storm. The handsome singer, who re-launched his website AriGold.com in May, talked with us about his aspirations, what he plans to bring to the stage at St. Pete Pride and what he hopes LGBTs will achieve within his lifetime: FIRST OFF, TELL US HOW YOU BECAME “SIR” ARI GOLD.

sir Ari GOLd: I was “knighted” by the Imperial Court of New York where I knelt in front of a drag queen at A Night of a Thousand Gowns. I was more honored to kneel before a drag queen to become a Sir than if the Queen of England had done it. That organization does such good work and to have them give me such an honor was very special. It also helps distinguish me from that character in Entourage. (Laughs). HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE FIRST MAJOR HEADLINER FOR ST. PETE PRIDE?

I was thrilled and honored to come on. It just seems like I’ve been getting a lot of these incredible gifts lately and I’m honored and blessed to have the LGBT community give

me these opportunities. I’m also headlining the first New York Pride Kickoff event earlier in June. It’s a great honor in both places. YOU’RE GOING TO BE ON THE MAIN STAGE ON CENTRAL AVENUE. HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO PERFORM OUTDOORS?

I actually just performed in Phoenix, Ariz., where it was 90 degrees but it was dry. Each outdoor performance presents its own challenges. When it’s dry like it was there, it’s difficult vocally. When its humid like it will be in Florida, I end up being a complete and sweaty mess on the stage within the first five seconds of the show. If you want some of that sweat, stand close to the stage. If you don’t, stand back. (Laughs).

by the end of the show they come out feeling just a little bit better and prouder of who they are. IS THERE A LOT OF PRESSURE FOR YOU BEING CONSIDERED THE FIRST OUT POPULAR SINGER?

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU DURING A LIVE PERFORMANCE?

When you’re blazing a trail, you definitely have to knock down some obstacles along the way. I’ve learned that it may actually take a bit longer to get to where you need to go, but at the same time I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do that.

It’s very theatrical and I try to take the audience on a journey with me. I hope that

lexis Mateo adores the number three. The Tampa Bay resident auditioned three times for RuPaul’s Drag Race, landed a role on Season 3 of the popular Logo series and finished third in this year’s competition. It’s no wonder the popular performer is excited to make an appearance at her third St. Pete Pride in the Promenade. “I live in Tampa now to be near the airport, but St. Petersburg is my home,” the former Miss ASAP says. “I always have so much fun at St. Pete Pride and now I’m involved with a lot of Prides around the country. But St. Pete has one of the best events.” Mateo burst onto St. Petersburg’s performing scene several years ago under the watchful eyes of performers Esme Russell and Alicia Markstone at the old Suncoast Resort. There she learned tools of her trade and her place in the drag hierarchy.

st. Pete Pride 2011

“Those two trained me for drag and taught me to know my place,” Mateo recalls. “I believe that no matter what someone does for a living, that when they begin they should respect the people that came before them and always respect the place they work. It’s also important to respect your audience so you can go farther in life. They taught me that and I tell newcomers to know their place in every moment in life.” Mateo has definitely learned (and earned) her place—and in 2011, it’s on a nationally televised show, red carpets across the country and in LGBT Pride events throughout the U.S. The reality of her newfound fame still surprises Mateo, who is recognized whenever she’s out—locally or on the road. “Since appearing on the show it has been wonderful,” Mateo says. “The traveling and meeting people everywhere has been the most fun I’ve ever had. To go somewhere and have people know your name is just such an amazing

feeling. It’s a fun time.” On Season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Mateo presented a no-nonsense attitude with the other performers and she says that the Alexis Mateo viewers saw on Monday nights was pretty true to life. Any editing that was done to her scenes didn’t change her perception of how things really played out. “All of the girls on the show were afraid of the editing process,” Mateo admits. “But I was very happy. I was bitchy when I needed to be and real when I needed to be. I felt like that was the real me.” But she still finds it unbelievable to see herself on such a popular television show. “The experience of Drag Race was everything I hoped it would be,” Mateo says. “I did some television when I worked at Disney, but this was different because the cameras were on us 24/7. It was kind of uncomfortable and stressful that way and I was always wondering what was going to happen next. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” Mateo recognizes the sacrifices of LGBTs before her and says she’s happy that St. Pete Pride holds true to the tradition of honoring the Stonewall Riots of New York, which started the gay rights movement on that June night. “Sure it’s hot, but we’re in Florida—even if we move it to Christmas it’ll be hot,” she says. “I don’t think we should move the date because it signifies what everyone went through to get the freedom we have now. Wear your shorts, flip flops and celebrate. We’re lucky to have such a tropical place to celebrate. “Asking St. Pete Pride to move its date is like telling me to move my July birthday celebration because it’s hot. My birthday is a historical day for me—I’m not moving that to December.” At 30, Mateo’s future looks bright. While she is thrilled to appear in the St. Pete Pride Promenade, she hopes to continue to work on television and in the music industry and one day she’d like to headline a cruise line show or maybe a show in Vegas—that is if she stays away from the political arena. “I want to become President of the United States,” she laughs. “I want to be the first Hispanic, drag queen president of the U.S. I will make every straight male illegal so they can suffer like we did.” In all seriousness, Mateo values equality and is excited to see the strides made by the LGBT community in recent years. But to achieve all of our goals, “One Day,” Mateo says our community must clean its own house before asking for respect from others. “There are lots of concerns as to how the straight community sees us, but there’s no concern as to how we assess each other,” Mateo says. “There’s separation between lesbians and gays, the drag queens and bears. It’s supposed to be a family and I would love to see us accomplish a union for the whole LGBT community. If we want respect from society as a whole, we have to respect ourselves and our own community.” |  |

“PRIDE IS ABOUT BEING OUT THERE AND F MBOYANT AND I THINK IT’S GREAT WE’VE REACHED SUCH A HIGH LEVEL OF ACCEPTANCE. BUT WE HAVE MORE WORK TO DO.” —sir Ari GOLd

 sir Ari GOLd CONTINUED FROM PG.31 I think it’s a very big privilege to be able to lay the trail and have people and artists come after me who are inspired and say, “I can be openly gay and I can explore this in my work.” It’s amazing to have the fans be able to see me and see themselves reflected back.

Your

GaYBOR Realtor! WINNER

DO YOU THINK IT WAS HARDER FOR YOU SINCE YOU’RE ALSO JEWISH?

Being gay and Jewish can be hard, but that’s why I talk about it. Jews represent a small minority in this country. I think there are so many LGBT people who grow up in religious families that most people can relate to what I’m talking about. Whether you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Mormon or whatever, it can be challenging when you feel an attachment and love for the religion or tradition and culture you come from and that culture doesn’t accept that part of you that is so intrinsic to who you are. WHO DO YOU CONSIDER AS ROLE MODELS?

Of course I like Michael Jackson, Madonna, George Michael, Prince—all the big masters. But I have to say that I have been inspired by Lady Gaga’s ascent to fame. She is so well spoken and I like how experimental she is and that she champions gay rights. She’s inspired me and the positive reactions to what she’s doing inspired me to continue doing what I’m doing. IF YOU WEREN’T A PERFORMER, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

I’ve always considered myself a writer, fi rst and foremost. That is the basis of everything I do. I’ve thought about writing a graphic novel and I love creativity and art and culture in any form. DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST PRIDE EXPERIENCE?

I was 20 and it was in New York. I had grown up thinking I couldn’t tell anyone I was gay, but here were people having fun and being proud. LGBT Pride and parades are about being out there and flamboyant and I think it’s great we’ve reached such a high level of acceptance. But we have more work to do. THIS YEAR, ST. PETE PRIDE’S THEME IS “ONE DAY.” WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE ONE DAY?

One day I would like to look back at this time and be shocked that we had such a difficult time accepting all of the people who are so diverse and beautiful in this world. |  |

ST. PETE PRIDE 2011

The Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival will present its monthly film at Muvico Baywalk in downtown St. Petersburg. This year’s featured film is SPORK! and you’ve never seen anything like it. It may remind you of Napoleon Dynamite, Bring It On, Pink Flamingos and a dozen other movies and native Floridian director JB Ghuman admits to many influences. This colorful and foulmouthed musical comedy is rooted in quirky jokes, catchy tunes, mind-blowing dance moves and shocking social commentary, coupled with a sweetness that will reel you in. SPORK is a frizzy-haired, pink-cheeked outcast trying to navigate her way through the annals of junior high. Named by her well-meaning stoner brother, SPORK’s moniker refers to the fact that she’s got both girl and boy parts, and everyone else seems to know it too. When a school dance show provides a chance for SPORK to show up a mean-girls gang, her sassy trailer-park neighbor Tootsie Roll steps up to coach her with some “booty-poppin” moves. Featuring a vintage 90’s soundtrack, a score by Casey James and the Stay Puft Kid, and extended school hall dance sequences, SPORK! is a film about standing out and fitting in. Tickets are $9.50. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit TIGLFF.com.

ntertainment at St. Pete Pride will be handled a little differently in the festival’s ninth year. While there are still two stages pumping out the tunes—only one stage will be dedicated to live bands. The other is reserved for DJs and dance music. On June 25, headliner Sir Ari Gold and several local groups will showcase their talents from the Jagermeister Main Stage on Central Avenue at 21st Street. Local DJs will perform at the smaller stage at the corner of Central and 27 th Street a few blocks away. This is the first year St. Pete Pride has had a headliner and it’s the first year it’s offered nonstop dance music on its secondary stage. The shift gives live bands more time to perform and special guests and dignitaries will speak from the Jagermeister location. St. Petersburg City Councilman Jeff Danner is scheduled to read the 2011 Proclamation declaring June as St. Pete Pride month and the yet-to-be-named Mister St. Pete Pride 2011 and Miss St. Pete Pride 2011 will also get a chance to perform. Below is a rundown of who is appearing on the Main Stage. A more detailed list—including times of the performances, will be released in the St. Pete Pride issue of Watermark on June 9.

Karmic Tattoo is the phenomenal band hailing from the Tampa Bay area. KT’s CD release of More Than Skin Deep happens the night of St Pete Pride. Known for their interaction with their audience, these women know how to get the crowd going. The all female band consists of Lisa Noe, Pam Green and Amy Black. Karmic Tattoo will rouse your sound palette with music ranging from their originals, to the 60’s, 70’s on up to today’s hits. Karmic Tattoo has been featured in several area publications, including Watermark, Bayareabeat.org and ProSuzy and you can catch their live broadcast on Bullsradio Grassroots Groove (BullsRadio.org) For more information on Karmic Tattoo, visit KarmicTattooMusic.com.

Sarasota/St. Pete-based Elysian Sex Drive is one of the more original rock bands on the local scene. The strong, self-penned material and spirited live shows, led by provocative front woman DeLaran, have earned ESD a dedicated following that’s as diverse as the group’s repertoire. Their sound is simultaneously a blend of rock, funk, alternative and world beat inspired tunes. An Elysian Sex Drive show is an unforgettable experience and the group has become a regular performance notch in St. Pete Pride’s bedpost. For more information, visit ElysianSexDrive.com.

Ari Gold Award-winning recording artist Sir Ari Gold is rewriting the rules and turning the pop and dance music scene on its head. His third studio album, Transport Systems, has been hailed by People Magazine and music legend Clive Davis. Gold is the first headliner to grace St. Pete Pride’s stage. For more information on this openly gay, Jewish musical phenomenon, see page 31 of this guide.

KElly NEff Indie rocker Kelly Neff has been playing her music throughout the Sunshine State for the last eight years and this will mark her seventh year performing at St. Pete Pride. If you’ve ever been to one of the all-girl bars in St. Petersburg, you’ve run into Neff. The guitarist, songwriter and performer is a constant performer at places like The Hideaway, Gulfport on the Rocks and was a favorite at the now-closed Gemini Lounge. Neff will no doubt perform some of her favorite tunes, like Next Time and Ladies of the Night. For more information on Neff, visit MySpace.com/KellyNeff.

Deb Hunseder and Steph Callahan met in 1989 and had their first gig two weeks later. The harmonies were magic. From the first note, they knew they had something that could not be matched. Since 1989 the duo has opened for national acts including John Mayer, Pat Benatar, India.Irie, Joan Osborne, Tabithas Secret (now Matchbox 20), Melissa Ferrick, and Koko Taylor. They’ve also performed their stirring accapella rendition of the national anthem for the Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With 20 years of experience and eight CDs between them in the bag, this duo is a finely tuned personable act. They are capable of touring as a duo, or as a band. t only 26, two-time Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir has done more than most people do in a lifetime. But the skater-turned-everything-else is known for being flamboyantly gay, which he publicly announced before the release of his memoir last year, just as much as he is for tearing up the ice, starring in a reality series, and even releasing a pop song, “Dirty Love.” Now the U.S. national champion is prepared to visit St. Petersburg to host Pride in Fashion at the Tyrone Square Mall Macy’s Department store at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 24. The assignment seems to make sense, since the Olympian is working on his own fashion line—among other things. Weir talked to us about his own feelings on Pride, the media’s reaction to his not-soshocking reveal, and how “being gay isn’t a cause.”

HOW WAS YOUR FIRST BOOK TOUR? Johnny Weir: People came out in droves to support me and the book. We did New York and then my hometown in Amish country Pennsylvania; then I started to hit some of the places where my book probably wouldn’t sell as well as it would in other places of the U.S. ST. PETERSBURG IS A PRETTY GAY FRIENDLY PLACE, BUT WHAT WAS IT LIKE STOPPING IN SOME OF THOSE LESS GAYFRIENDLY CITIES?

People don’t really get upset with me about the gay thing because I live in a way that’s very unaggressive. I don’t make an issue about being gay and I don’t make an issue about the people I’m with being straight. It just is what it is.

here’S

Johnny F i g u r e s k a t e r J o h n n y We i r w i l l h o s t P r i d e i n Fa s h i o n Ju n e 2 4 BEING GAY HAS RECEIVED?

I am, actually. I mean, honestly, it shouldn’t be a shock to anyone. I’d never been explicit about it, but I’d never hidden it, either. To me, that’s one of the best things I can do as a gay man—not call attention to it. DID YOU EVER FEEL PRESSURE FROM THE GAY COMMUNITY TO COME OUT?

Absolutely. I’ve lived in a spotlight more than really any figure skater has for a long time. Michelle Kwan is quite It wasn’t so much famous, but from a pop culture what I learned about standpoint, people have myself, because I “TO ME, THAT’S ONE latched onto everything never forget where that I stand for and I come from. But I OF THE BEST THINGS I they support me realized a lot about and everything CAN DO AS A GAY MAN— my childhood as that I do, which I was writing this is an incredible NOT CALL ATTENTION TO IT.” book. That was kind thing. of the wildest thing; —Johnny Weir To me, being I could remember gay isn’t a cause. stuff from my life It’s just something that I’m born into. that I hadn’t really thought about. When

WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF WHILE WRITING WELCOME TO MY WORLD?

you’re young, certain things stick with you—like when you fall off your bicycle, or meeting a boy or girl for the first time. But you don’t necessarily remember that time that you were feeding the dogs and you got locked in the cage. (Laughs) ARE YOU SURPRISED BY ALL THE ATTENTION YOU

LAST YEAR WE SAW A STRING OF GAY YOUTH SUICIDES. DID THAT AFFECT YOUR DECISION TO COME OUT?

When I heard about all of these kids across the country having so many issues with bullies and committing suicide and having such a rough time with it, that was hard for me to fathom because I never got

to the point where I thought of offi ng myself or crumbling just because there’s some loudmouth or someone scared of who they are as a person. When I was writing the book, it was important for me to not make being gay a point of making me different or special in any way. No matter what you’re born this way, as the Gaga says. AFTER ALL YOU’VE DONE—A REALITY SHOW, PRIDE EVENTS, SKATING, A SONG AND A BOOK—WHAT’S LEFT TO DO, REALLY?

I’m hoping more skating. It really is who I am, no matter what people think of all these other projects. I’m trying to put my Spectacular together, which would be a dream come true—to have my own variety show and include amazing acts like Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera and Elton John. I’m working on a jewelry line and my fashion line. And I need people to love the second season of Be Good Johnny Weir on Logo. |  |

F

lorida is an obvious vacation destination for many—regardless of their sexual orientation. The vast beaches, the incredible weather and the seemingly endless number of attractions bring tourists from around the globe to the Sunshine State. But there’s a particular draw to St. Petersburg for LGBT travelers—and the phenomenal growth of St. Pete Pride has helped secure the city as a summer destination for all tastes. In early 2011, downtown St. Petersburg opened the brand new Dali Museum, celebrating the eccentricities and talents of the Spanish artist and the attraction at One Dali Boulevard has already brought in more than 150,000 visitors. In its short existence, the new Dali Museum has hosted several LGBT events, including St. Pete Pride’s Taste of Pride fundraiser in March and Equality Florida’s Pinellas Gala. “The Dali has been incredibly supportive of the LGBT community,” says Chris Rudisill. “They helped us reintroduce the popular Taste of Pride and Dali himself celebrated diversity. It’s a great fit.” The museum is just blocks away from the Museum of Fine Arts, which boasts permanent and visiting exhibits—often with an LGBT influence. Exhibits range from paintings and ceramics to new media and photography. St. Petersburg’s cultural influence in the way of museums is obvious—the Holocaust Museum is less than a mile away from the Dali and the MFA—but there’s more to St. Petersburg. Travel writer Paul Rubio sees Florida—and St. Petersburg—as a hot destination for LGBTs simply because of the weather and the diversity of the population. That, coupled with nearly 100,000 people descending on Central Avenue for St. Pete Pride creates a huge draw. His bestselling Out Traveler series of books—including one dedicated to the Tampa/St. Pete region, require plenty of research. “I am a big fan of researching a place beforehand,” the Fort Lauderdale resident says. “When I cover a city I read everything and anything I can get my hands on before going. Then I venture for a weekend to get a general

LUre OF tHe

rAiNBOW St. Pete Pr ide ha s helped tur n the cit y i nt o a n L GBT t r a v e l e r ’s d e st i n a t i o n feel and write down my first impressions.” Those impressions were good, as reported in the winter 2008 issue of Out Traveler. St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay was described as the “yin to Miami’s brash Euro-style yang, making it an enticing choice for laid-back queer travelers who value its 35 miles of whitesand beaches and 300-plus days of sunshine annually.” The wide range of nightlife is also a huge draw, according to Rubio. “You can never keep the gays from a good tan and cheap drinks,” Rubio laughs. “We rule Florida.” The annual St. Pete Pride event celebrates the local community, but the number of visitors from out of town—and out of state—seems to be swelling. It doesn’t hurt that Visit St. Pete/ Clearwater, the area’s visitors’ and conventions bureau, has directly marketed to LGBT travelers since 2007. “I don’t think anyone can ignore the impact St. Pete Pride has on local LGBT businesses and the entire community,” says David Baker, resort

manager of the Flamingo Resort. “Pride brings out people who would never come out any other time—it’s amazing to see the crowds.” Expect huge crowds for the Friday night Pride Kickoff Party at Georgie’s Alibi. There’s also an official St. Pete Pride Ice Party at the Postcard Inn on St. Pete Beach immediately following the Street Festival and on Sunday, June 26, the all-gay Flamingo Resort will host the official Pride Tea-Dance throughout the afternoon and evening. “I expect us to sell out the weekend of St. Pete Pride again this year,” Baker says. “The Tea-Dance last year was insane and I expect it to be just as crazy and fun this year.” Other hoteliers are seeing the draw created by St. Pete Pride as well. The showplace Renaissance Vinoy Resort has a package for St. Pete Pride attendees. And if you want to be close to the Promenade and Street Festival, the nearby Courtyard Marriott also offers special rates. Visit StPetePride.com for information and links. |  | St. Pete Pride 2011
