The theme of Global Equality wasn’t chosen by accident

i

n its 12th year, St. Pete Pride celebrates the LGBT community of Tampa Bay and Florida—but with an added global focus.

Festival vendors will also be able to interact more with visitors and not have to combat the parade traffic.” The St. Pete Pride Board also based its decision to change the annual event to a weekend-long celebration based on feedback from the community. A night parade, beginning at sunset, will likely be cooler than the daytime parades of the past and allows the Sunday Street Festival to begin at 11 a.m., two hours later than last year.

St. Pete Pride 2014

The theme “Global Equality” is timely, according to St. Pete Pride Executive Director Eric Skains, who referenced the attention LGBT rights received during the Sochi Olympics in Russia earlier this year. “The Olympics created a push for awareness of the need for equality around the world,” Skains says. “It’s about Pride beyond its own boundaries.” Many Pride events have similar themes this year, which shows the dedication to create a world that’s accepting of LGBTs. And it’s not only the theme that’s different this year. St. Pete Pride will host its first-ever night parade on Saturday, June 28 and a separate Street Festival on Sunday, June 29. The reason for the change is two-fold, Skains says. “Parade attendance had gotten so large that it became unsafe for exhibitors and spectators,” Skains says. “Separating the two also gives us

The council member will continue carrying a banner for equality

W

hen newly elected St. Petersburg city council member Darden Rice learned she was selected as a grand marshal for St. Pete Pride 2014, she was pleasantly surprised, of course, but also realized the responsibility that comes along with the title.

St. Pete Pride 2014

“St. Pete Pride communicates to the world that we are a community that values its diversity.”

14

— Dar Den rice

“It means people trust me to literally and figuratively carry the banner proudly for equality,” she says. “And I do.” Rice was elected to council in November and took office in January. She and her partner, Julie, have shared their lives together for four years. They were introduced by mutual friends over dinner and have been together ever since. Rice has participated and attended several St. Pete Pride celebrations in the past, and she’s thrilled about the impact it has had on the LGBT community and the city she represents. “It is one of the largest events that the area hosts with an

undeniable positive economic impact,” she says. “It communicates to the world that we are a community that values its diversity.” This will be the first time that Rice has held the grand marshal title, and she laughs when she says it will be a unique experience. But she’s not sure if it will top her favorite St. Pete Pride memory, which just occurred last year. “I took my 15 year-old nephew, Gabe, to his first Pride last year and I was able to see the event through his eyes,” Rice recalls. “He had just come out to the family and this was a chance to show him a supportive, welcoming community.” He was also able to experience it from a unique vantage point, since he marched with his then-council candidate aunt. “And last year’s Pride coincided with the Supreme Court ruling on marriage equality, so national TV stations used clips from local stations covering Pride as part of the ‘LGBT issue’ package story,” recalls Rice. “We had friends from California call to say they saw Julie and me on national TV as we marched holding hands in the St. Pete Pride parade!”

The ambassador in the HIV/AIDS fight hopes to change minds

J

ay Aller has a unique view of St. Pete Pride. The Resource Development Manager for the AIDS Service Association of Pinellas (ASAP) attended the very first meeting to discuss the festival’s creation back in the early 2000s.

“I’m blessed that I get to do what I do for our community every day.” St. Pete Pride 2014

— J ay a L L e r

16

“We discussed if we would have a parade or a solidarity march,” this year’s male grand marshal remembers. “Knowing I was there and helped design the first St. Pete Pride promenade is easily my favorite and maybe my proudest memory.” In his role with ASAP, Aller is an elevated figure among the LGBT community. He is responsible for events that bolster financial support and community outreach. His largest fundraising events are Dining Out For Life in April, AIDS Walk Tampa Bay in September and the Santa Speedo Run in December. “I was very surprised to get

this honor,” Aller says of his grand marshal title. “I’m blessed that I get to do what I do for our community every day—helping the fight against HIV/AIDS is extremely important to me. And this tells me my life’s work isn’t going unnoticed.” Aller hopes his role as grand marshal will elevate awareness surrounding HIV/AIDS, rather it be the unjust stigma surrounding an infection or the importance of getting tested and staying protected. He is also excited about this year’s theme of “Global Equality.” “That theme speaks not just to the literal world, but to the equality for all of us right here in our community,” Aller says. “I hope that those in the parade use the theme to decorate their floats and advance the mission so many of us are working toward.” And Aller’s mission as grand marshal this year is to change hearts and to change minds in the overall Tampa Bay community. “I want to show everyone that being a member of the LGBT community does not make you a second-class citizen,” he says.

John and Nancy Desmond restarted the group four years ago

f

our years ago, John and Nancy Desmond found themselves thrust into a new life. They learned their 28-year-old son was gay, met his partner and went to an open and affirming church with the happy couple.

“We are honored and thrilled beyond words to see our love for you returned back to us.”

St. Pete Pride 2014

—nancy DeSMonD

The experience was life changing, but the couple who have been married for 39 years now needed support to help them understand their gay son and the LGBT community. They learned of PFLAG, but were surprised to learn there was no longer a Tampa chapter. “We attended the Brandon/ Valrico chapter and saw for ourselves the power and relief that comes from one happy and secure LGBT person relating to a family with a newly-out loved one,” John says. “We met with the directors of a previous iteration of PFLAG Tampa and just jumped in with both feet.” The couple has attended

St. Pete Pride in the past and often see friends and members of PFLAG on Central Avenue during the festival. But this is the first time PFLAG Tampa, or the Desmonds, have been grand marshals. “It’s incredible,” says Nancy, when asked what it means to be selected grand marshal by the community. “The LGBT community itself chose to embrace their pride by selecting a serious group like PFLAG Tampa that could not be more about love and acceptance. The largest LGBT Pride parade in the southeast is being led by the largest ally group in the nation!” While the Desmonds are the face of the local PFLAG chapter, they realize it’s the organization that captured the votes of the community this year. “We are honored and thrilled beyond words to see our love for you returned back to us,” Nancy says. “Everywhere we go, people share with us that a loved one was helped by a PFLAG chapter somewhere. We share this honor with all those chapters.”

t. PEtErSburG | Mayor Rick Kriseman has a special place in his heart for St. Pete Pride. He is, after all, the first City Councilman to sign a proclamation declaring June St. Pete Pride month—a tradition he did until he left for Tallahassee in 2006.

He has also walked in numerous St. Pete Pride parades—even in 2013’s rainy celebration, where he participated as a candidate for St. Petersburg Mayor.

He won that office handily in November year and in 2014, he’ll be the first sitting St. Petersburg Mayor to ever walk in St. Pete Pride’s annual parade, which begins at dusk on Saturday, June 28. We asked the mayor continued on Pg.27 uu

“The LGBT community is an integral part of the city, and it wouldn’t be the same city without it.” — S t. P e t e r s b u r g M ay o r R i c k K r i s e m a n

organizers for recognizing that it may have grown out of a single, solo event.

| uu | rICK kRISEMAN from pg.23 to share his thoughts on Pride, St. Petersburg and the local LGBT community. What do you think is St. Pete Pride’s secret to success?

The success has been unbelievable. I think part of that success is the community. This community has really embraced Pride. And I’ve said this before, even when we had a mayor who wouldn’t sign a proclamation, he didn’t do anything to get in the way or to be disruptive. I appreciated the fact that while he could have, he didn’t do that. I also think that nationally, there’s been an awakening. But this community in particular, in St. Pete, we’re very tolerant, diverse and inclusive. I think that has played a part in the success. Are you supportive of holding the parade on Saturday night and the festival as a separate event on Sunday?

Not only will I be participating, I’m encouraging all employees who are interested to walk with us in the parade, including police and fire, which has never happened before, either. Throughout Pride Month, June, we’re going to do some fun stuff and celebrate and recognize the month as a whole. I think that’s important. Marriage equality is the big headline-maker these days. Do you support marriage equality?

I absolutely support marriage equality. It’s sad that people have to leave the state to get married. Do you have a favorite Pride memory?

There are a couple: Last year, even though it was just a year ago, was memorable because it shows how far Pride has come. The weather wasn’t very cooperative and we had several downpours over the span of the day. What amazed me was that people stayed despite all the rain. They had a great time and didn’t care! I remember looking from my booth and thinking, “Everyone is still here! It’s pouring and they’re staying.” The rain would let up and they’d come back into the street. It was wonderful. What about earlier memories?

The number of protestors in year one to the number last year—if there even were any last year. I think that speaks about this community. It’s significant. Continued on pg.36 uu

St. Pete Pride 2014

I think the two day-event fits because as the parade has grown and as the festival has grown, it got to the point where it was difficult to coexist. They were on top of each other. You had businesses and folks setting up booths while the parade is happening and I think it got more difficult as numbers increased. This parade was grown organically— the whole event has—to the point that it’s reached the point where it needed to be separated. I really give a lot of credit to the

You will be the first St. Petersburg mayor to participate in the parade.

With those advances, is Pride still needed?

36

Yes. We have made—the community and our country—a lot of progress, but we’re not there yet. There’s a line in a Garth Brooks song that states “When we’re free to love anyone we choose.” “Same Love” has a similar message. When we’re truly at that point, that’s when Pride probably won’t be necessary. My experience in life has been this: People tend to be intolerant when they haven’t been exposed to things. So when you’re not used to seeing two men or two women openly showing affection toward each other, there’s a certain amount of discomfort with that. The more you’re exposed, the more comfortable you are with it. That’s why Pride is important.

Above: Mayor Kriseman greets a supporter during his inauguration in front of City Hall this January.

What would you say to those who don’t approve of your support of the LGBT community?

I’m not changing and I’m sorry you don’t approve. I’d really like to say, “Get over it, it’s time to join the 21st century.” And your message to the LGBT community?

We value you and we want you to stay here and continue being a part of this community. The LGBT community is an integral part of the city, and it wouldn’t be the same city without it.

Mary Lambert brings her message of love to St. Pete Pride

W

hen asked what the last year has been like for Mary Lambert, one would expect her to talk about the celebrity performances—she was on Ellen and on The Colbert Report—or the monumental showing of acceptance during a mass wedding at the Grammy Awards earlier this year.

But surprisingly, those are anecdotal stories to what defines her year. “This is the year of Pride festivals,” the cheerful Lambert says during a phone call from California. “Last year I did maybe two. This year I’m so excited to be traveling and to be with my people and to

perform. I feel supported by the LGBT community. There’s a lot of love there and I’m glad I get to come to Florida.” Lambert is the headliner for St. Pete Pride’s 27/92 Concert at the State Theater on Friday, June 27. Sarasota Pride is a co-presenter of the concert, which also features The Real

L-Word’s Hunter Valentine and Tampa’s own Connor Zwetsch. Lambert rose to stardom last year when she wrote the chorus to Macklamore’s and Ryan Lewis’ marriage equality anthem. “Same Love.” Her words, “I can’t change, even if I tried, even if I wanted to...” serve as a transitional melody in a spoken-word anthem that boosted ratings at this year’s Grammy Awards and stirred controversy in more conservative markets. This will be Lambert’s second time to perform in Florida. “I was in Orlando once for a show,” Lambert says, admitting she doesn’t remember much detail. “It was a special appearance in a show about love, of course.” According to Lambert, her success and involvement with “Same Love” came out of the blue, when her friend, Hollis Wong-Wear, called her up and said Macklamore and Lewis were stuck on the chorus of their new equality anthem. continued on Pg.50 uu

“When the sun is out and the gays are all out, I have to go check it out!” – Mary L ambert

Wong-Wear offered up Lambert’s services. “I think they had exercised a lot of their options,” Lambert laughs. “They had tried a lot of people before they got to me. Hollis was working with them as sort of a sounding board and she suggested me. They said, ‘Sure, we’ll take a chance,’ and the rest is history.” Lambert said she had approximately three hours to come up with the riff, which the songwriters loved. Of course there’s more to Lambert than that one song. Her debut single, “She Keeps Me Warm,” is an extension of “Same Love,” and peaked at No. 2 on the iTunes Singer/ Songwriter chart. Her songs are intense, Lambert admits, which is why she injects humor into her shows to keep the audience energized. “I don’t want people to go home and cry into their cats,” she jokes. “I want them to feel uplifted and joy. I want to talk about issues—body image and gay rights. I never want to project anything and I always have a good time.” And Lambert expects to have a good time while in St. Petersburg, although she doesn’t quite know what that entails right now. “I’m hoping to see some sites there,” Lambert says. “Because, you know, when the sun is out and the gays are all out, I have to go check it out!” And speaking of being out, Lambert has no problem sharing that she is a lesbian. And while she’s not the first popular singer to be out, she knows there is still a ways to go before LGBT performers can find full acceptance. “I think it’s a fallacy to say that you’re not marginalized as a minority,” Lambert says. “The hurdles are less difficult to get over today, of course, but I’m no expert. I’m relatively young and just getting into it now. It is hard,

but I didn’t have to compromise anything. I feel fortunate for that.” So Lambert still believes there is a strong need for festivals like St. Pete Pride. And Lambert has been to many of them. She attended her first when she was 12 or 13. Her mother is a lesbian. When she went to Seattle Pride years later, as an arts college student, Lambert had a new appreciation for Pride, especially since she had come out as a lesbian herself. “I handed out ‘please vote’ M&M chocolate chip cookies to all the girls I thought were cute,” Lambert says. “I was hoping for a kiss on the cheek.” Up until this year, Lambert has gone to mostly Pride festivals in her home state of Washington. But 2014 is much different, with her performing at Pride festivals across the country. “There’s this over-arching feel of fun and love and of community,” Lambert says. “I get to see the variations of that them city by city.” After performing at Seattle’s Pride after “Same Love” came out, Lambert recalls speaking with a woman who shared the impact of that song. “She was a minister in her Methodist Church,” Lambert says. “She said that after the song came out she was ready to let people in the church know who she was. She had to leave the church. We were just crying and holding each other.” Lambert cherishes those moments with other LGBTs. It’s a joyous yet solemn message that moves people to tears. “And it’s normal for a Mary Lambert show,” she laughs.
