100 YEARS OF
JUNIOR SAILING
by Corey Hall, Waterfront Programs Coordinator
T
he St. Petersburg Yacht Club has long been the gateway to sailing for St. Petersburg residents. More often than not, these sailing journeys began through one of our internationally recognized youth sailing programs. In 1919, a Junior Yacht Club was created within SPYC. The junior clubhouse was originally located in the central yacht basin steps away from the sprawling porches of the main clubhouse. In the 1940’s, the Junior Yacht Club moved to Demens Landing (formerly called the “South Mole”). These sailing facilities quickly became a home away from home for sailors to gather; learning about teamwork, fleet maintenance and above all, develop a lifelong love of the water through sailing.
APRIL 2020 | SMOOTH SAILING
Year after year, championships were won by SPYC sailors. National and International venues proved no match for these sailors. SPYC Junior Sailors have won every individual and team title for the Optimist Dinghies on the North American continent. Sailors have gone on to be named College All Americans, One Design National Champions, America’s Cup Winners, and Olympians. Be sure to follow along as current and future SPYC junior sailors continue to carve their way into the history books.

THISTLE MID-WINTER REGATTA by John Deermount, Regatta Chair
E
When I’m 64
arly March brought 42 Thistles from 16 states to SPYC for the 64th Annual Thistle Mid-Winter Regatta. The fleet was treated to a very unusual five straight days of plentiful breeze. There was close competition with six different boats winning the eight races. The overall champion, for the third time, was Mike Ingham from Rochester, NY. The top Florida finisher was SPYC member, Kevin Bradley. Maurice McGough was recognized with the Ted Colson Race Committee Award for his contribution to Race Management Excellence. Elmer Richards, a long time competitor from Lake Hopatcong, was awarded the Darlene Clark Award for his support of the event.
The Club’s excellent facilities and spirit of hospitality were appreciated by all the competitors. They were treated to a Paella dinner on Sunday night and an excellent banquet Friday with the accompaniment of a Bagpiper. They also got to experience some fun competition at the St. Pete Shuffleboard Club on an off night. A sincere thank you goes out to the SPYC staff who did a wonderful job. The Race Committee, led by PRO Todd Fedyszyn and Regatta General George Pennington were lauded by all the competitors for their excellent race management. The Thistle MWE is one of the longest annual regattas hosted by SPYC. Everyone involved is looking forward to next year’s 65th annual event.

HELLY HANSEN NOOD REGATTA by Corey Hall, Waterfront Programs Coordinator
S
PYC hosted the 2020 Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta February 14-16. 185 boats were in attendance from all over the United States; including 41 A-Cat Class sailors, 23 Lightnings, 15 J/70s, 14 Melges 24’s and 13 S2 7.9, to name a few. Sailors competed on four courses thought-out the three-day event. Friday, sailors completed one race on circles A, B and C while the PHRF racers on circle D, completed 2 races before hitting the dock to celebrate Valentine’s Day with their loved ones. Sailors were greeted with picture perfect conditions on Tampa Bay for Saturday and Sunday’s racing. Saturday racers completed three to four races on circles A, B, C and D, while the North Sails Rally completed a distance
race on Tampa Bay. Sailors were greeted with a surprising strong south-easterly and sunshine for Sunday’s racing to end out the series. Congratulations to all of the SPYC members who participated in this event! A huge THANK YOU to all of the amazing Race Committee members, volunteers, and staff members who helped make the event possible. SMOOTH SAILING | APRIL 2020

enerous members are the backbone on this fine Club. Whether they volunteer in many capacities or so kindly donate items of great worth and historical import. National Sailing Hall of Fame elected member, Ed Baird, has most generously donated his NSHoF Citation and Medal, along with some interesting books that may be found in the library in the lobby. Past Commodore George Pearson has featured many times in offshore races, especially the Havana Races and was instrumental in giving many juniors the chance to race offshore. Several photocopied articles and old Smooth Sailings just came the Club’s way via Jim King and George’s daughter Cecilia. A recent email enquiry received by Director of Membership, Susan Robertson, led to the receipt of a treasure trove of digital images from Chris Mohr’s father’s album. These included the 1932, 1933, and 1934 Havana races and some Fish Class shots; not all dated but this is being worked on. However, one St. Petersburg Times shot from the pier of the 1933 Havana Start
Celia Tampa to Sarasota DeMaes
with caption also came with the Caldwell Tolson Hammil Pearson 2 matching photograph! Wonderful to have all that information. Also a SPT shot of Celia’s crew, for a Tampa to Sarasota race, including Jerry Hammill. The piece de resistance is the original 1909 St Petersburg Yacht Club Charter so kindly donated by Jim King, along with his father’s 1922 Junior membership card with the original burgee! So the moral of the story is, please be aware that the Club is most interested in memorabilia pertinent to the Clubs history, just in case you are moving or starting your Spring Cleaning! Please contact the House and Grounds committee for information on donations. A huge thank you to these members, present and past. Our clubhouse and archives contain many treasures!

What is a Poker Run?
A Poker Run is not a race. It’s a Club tradition and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters at SPYC. On Poker Run day, boaters meet at the Club docks and show off their well-curated boat theme (Examples: Gilligan’s Island, Viking Raiding Party, Top Gun). Upon arriving at the Club boaters check in and get a nautical map that will chart their path of adventure for the day. The map includes 6-7 different stops in which the boaters travel to and collect a poker chip at each stop. The stops are a combination of gracious member’s waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats are tasked with visiting all the stops in the time allotted. Upon returning to the Club each participant will turn in their tokens for poker cards and play a 5-Card Poker hand! Prizes are awarded for the best hand. arch winds arrived early this year, providing gusty and challenging conditions for sailors honing their skills for the Florida Women’s Sailing Association Rainbow Regatta. Angela Treinen is Captain of the Broad Reacher team, which also includes Suzanne Boohar, Kate Clardy, Luce Encke, and Katie Rodgers. Coaches J.P. Creignou and Charlie LaLanne have been working just as hard as the sailors to get everyone ready to race! On-thewater practices have been supplemented by on-shore video critiques of the sailors, courtesy of photographers Barbara Watson and Heather LaLanne. Gwen Mann, Debbie Walcutt, Charl Hadfield, Jennifer Parramore, Mary Moosbrugger and other members have provided great support for the team, pitching in to launch and pull boats, drive the coach boat, and help with equipment. The Broad Reachers are growing! We welcomed five new members in just the past several months: Suzanne Boohar, Kate Clardy, Luce Encke, Barbara Goodman, and Carin Korros. We invite and encourage women members of SPYC to join us in Pass-a-Grille on Saturday mornings, as we sail for fun and work on our sailing and racing skills. In the months ahead, we’re looking forward to other events/races such as the Nancy Lucas and Nona Bolster races. First Place: Mike McDonough, John Arsenault , Steve Hamlin, Jim Krause Closest to the Pins on Par 3’s: Dennis Augur, Barbara Deininger, Martin Morris, Isabel Schoenberg Closest to the Line on the Drive: Jim Krause Our March 2nd meeting was opened by the “Rule of the Month” presented by Jim Krause. The first rule was that we are always to wear sunscreen. We can do that! The second rule explained how to get relief from “casual water” on the golf course. With the rainy season soon upon us, I suspected we needed a refresher in this regard. Martin Morris presented a video on “Perfect Practice” and

Let’s Rally and Roll!!!
e had our first of many rallies in February, our “Leap Year” rally at the new Sunkissed Village RV Resort in Summerfield, FL. Everyone arrived on Friday and we had one of many happy hours, and campfire chats, for the four-day weekend. We were even interviewed by RV Lifestyles - RV YouTube vloggers. Saturday, some went to the local RV show, then that evening we enjoyed dinner and entertainment offered at the resort. Sunday, a few of us went to a bluegrass concert in the middle of the afternoon, followed by dinner on Lake Weir. That evening, we got to know a little more about each other (and our spouses) through Combat Uno! What fun, we didn’t want it to end.

he SPYC Riders have been planning great rides, but the weather hasn’t been cooperating...our ride to Sebring for the Vintage Car Race got sidelined due to weather. Bob Kline “Scouted” the rider training offered by the Tampa Police Department to promote rider safety. He attended an excellent course in which several more SPYC riders are going to enroll... thanks Bob! Planning now includes rides to Central Florida,

FLYING CLUB
Concorde

he Flying Club reconvened for our first meeting of 2020, we had a good group of 12 or so and discussed the clubs requirements and what we can provide to members. This now forms a good base to continue to expand our membership. In particular we welcomed Karen Fidyrch, a new SPYC Member and recently retired airline pilot. We look forward to sharing her experiences.
On a recent trip to the UK I visited the newly opened Bristol Aerospace Museum. The museum covers all aspects of aircraft and aerospace production from its early beginning (1910 after founder George White met with Wilbur Wright) and the final years APRIL 2020 | SMOOTH SAILING

under BAE and Rolls Royce. Star of the show however has to be the very last Concorde to fly G-BOAF. Housed in a repurposed hanger you get up close and personal and are able to go onboard for the most intimate experience you’ll ever get; I was lucky to fly in this magnificent technological tour de force some years ago. It truly is a beautiful airplane and you would still be amazed at its performance, flying 1,354 mph (Mach 2.04) at 60,000 feet making the trip from London to New York in 3 hours. One amazing fact Concorde expands 6-10” in flight due to heat. For further information or details on our next club meeting, contact andyevans@me.com OR 727-310-5981.

he farmer’s Almanac describes March’s weather as “In like a lion, Out like a lamb”; let’s hope! February and early March have seen extreme winds, keeping us off the water. Undaunted, the Fleet has overcome this by traveling via “Iron Dinghy” to both a “Day Trippers” event and our monthly Cruising Fleet dinner. January 25th found our “Day Trippers” at SPYC PAG for their Bloody Mary brunch. A couple of hardy members manage to travel by boat, but most of the two dozen participants were less adventurist. Barbara & Heber Weller again arranged for a wonderful get together, with the added bonus that we got to celebrate Angela & Brian Kowalik’s 25th Wedding Anniversary.
aboard the “Summer The Tall Ship “Star Flyer” Star”. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend, which forced our “Fleet Admiral”, Caryn Bain, to MC. Scuttlebutt has it, they prefer her! Not confined to local cruising, we had a group embark aboard the Star Flyer (a four masted, square rigged, tall ship) in St. Maarten and cruised the Caribbean! Joe Petrella & Michelle Matthes even climb to the Crow’s Nest. No one said our cruisers were smart… only fearless.
During our March dinner are presenters, Kristina Thyrre & Atle Moe, provided a spellbound presentation on their adventures

VINTAGE MOTORCLUB by Andy Evans

charity I have been happy to support is the Flight to the North Pole, which raises money for seriously and terminally ill kids, giving them a Christmas they deserve and family organized by The Ferrari Drivers Group of Sarasota. It is a fabulous exotic car show. On Saturday February 29th, over 150 cars flooded into downtown Lakewood Ranch for the 4th Annual Exotic Car Show. Main Street overflowed with exotic autos from such marques as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, McLaren, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Bentley, and Lotus including a special Classic section featuring vintage British and American cars. The weekend closed with an exhibitors’ drive on Sunday morning, followed by brunch at The Capital Grille.
Co-organizers Joe Brielmann and Jurgen Otto said, “It was a fantastic weekend, the Gala dinner was a big success and the array of exotics on display Saturday was outstanding—the weather was beautiful, and we had great attendance at the show. It’s a fun weekend for car enthusiasts, but at the end of the day, we do all of this for the kids.” All the weekend’s proceeds go to support “Flight to the North Pole” - more information is available at: www.flighttothenorthpole.org For further information or details on our next club meeting, contact andyevans@me.com OR 727-310-5981.
