CHAPTER TWO 2

COMMODORE’S LOG

W

arm holiday greetings for the month of December!

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. Gathering around the dinner table with my family and friends makes this my favorite holiday. As always, the Club did an outstanding job in preparing wonderful meals for our members. Many thanks to our staff for making it happen. While many members are taking advantage of our meals to go, we are starting to see more people feeling comfortable inside the clubhouse. They tell us this is the only place they feel safe in the company of others. We are pleased to see this happening. But remember, it is our policies which make this possible. We are constantly reviewing and revising these protocols, based on data from Local, State and Federal agencies. Our management team remains ever vigilant for opportunities to keep the Club safe. They may give you, as a member, advice on appropriate safety measures. Please respect employees and managers when they enforce our rules; do your part to help keep us safe. Unfortunately, we were forced to cancel The Commodore’s Ball, Christmas Boutique, and the Vintage Car Show due to safety concerns, as a result of COVID-19. We are hopeful to bring these marquis events back next year. The Blessing of the Fleet went off as planned, and was well-attended. Rev. Canon Peete did an excellent job as our returning clergy. Many thanks to our Fleet Captain, Willy Bain, for organizing the event and to Vice Commodore, Bill Waters, for providing his beautiful yacht, “Bimawich”, to serve as the Blessing Yacht. Our Junior Sailing Team is participating in practices, local regattas, and scrimmages. Adults are enjoying double-handed races in our fleet of J70s. I’d like to thank the Sailing Center staff, our Race Committee volunteers, and our coaches for allowing our juniors and adult racers to enjoy sailing under safe conditions. In addition to small, local events, we have successfully hosted our first Kiteboarding Regatta and the Laser District 13 Championships. Congratulations to those members of our Club who competed and thanks to our volunteers who make these events possible.

DECEMBER 2020 | SMOOTH SAILING

Up-coming 2021 regattas at SPYC include: Florida Snipe State Championship, J-Fest, Valentine’s Day Regatta, and Regata del Sol al Sol to Isla Mujeres. Also, be aware that the Yachting Recognition Awards are coming up soon. Please submit nominations by the January 6th deadline. Consider signing up for Adult Learn to Sail and Powerboat Classes offered at the Sailing Center. And while you are there, check out the mural on the west wall of the building. This is a beautiful addition to the water-front aesthetic and really helps connect SPYC to our community by participating in the SHINE Mural Festival. As we proceed into the holiday season, we have a very busy calendar to keep you engaged. The Club will, of course, be decked out in beautiful holiday decorations. Chamber music at the club will also help get you in the mood, Annual Lighting of the Yachts is going to be a beautiful evening, and Santa just may make an appearance at the Childrens’ Christmas Party & Brunch. New Year’s Eve celebration is always a fun way to ring in the New Year and on January 9, 2021 we are hosting the Game Show Night and Kids Video Game party. More details about our planned activities on and off the water are available in Smooth Sailing and on our website. If you have not been out to PAG recently, do yourself a favor and check it out. The docks and bathrooms are completed and you will enjoy the beachclub experience. Additionally, Valet service has been re-instituted at our main clubhouse, adhering to strict safety guidelines. Finally I’d like to give a big “thank-you” to everyone for donating to the Employee Holiday Fund. Our Club would not be the “home-away-from-home” that it is without our amazing team of employees; they take excellent care of us. I’m very proud to be part of a Club that treats our employees with kindness and respect. Regards,

Commodore David Mendelblatt

AROUND THE CLUB 17

W

by Dr. Patsy Warmack, President

e worried the programs might be less exciting during the pandemic but, that was before we got Helle Getz on the job as Program Chair! Each program this year just gets better than the last. The Patchington Fashion Show was the best fashion show ever – and wait until you see what she has lined up for December. It will be a true extravaganza! We will ring in the holidays and celebrate the season through shared music, gifts, games, laughter, and lunch. Entertainment will be provided by MJ Davidson and April Showers who have several audience participation ideas up their sleeves. For example, they will lead a game of Name That Tune that is incorporated into a segment honoring Beethoven’s Birthday. How creative is that? It all happens December 7th – arrive early between 10:30 and 10:45 am so you have plenty of time to check in using the SPYC COVID-19 guidelines. The program will start shortly after 11:00 am and will be followed by our Holiday Luncheon and Gift Exchange. This will be an exclusive for LBC members because, due to the coronavirus, no guests will be allowed – although

it isn’t too late to join the LBC (see details below). We are really excited because members can attend virtually or face-to-face. No one needs to miss out! However, everyone who wants to attend (at the club or via Zoom) MUST MAKE A RESERVATION! For inhouse reservations contact the club: (727) 360-1646 or email kerrie@spyc.org, or use the online reservation system at www.spyc.org. For Zoom reservations contact patsywarmack@tampabay.rr.com. Members who reserve a Zoom seat will be sent a link to enter the meeting. “Zoomee’s” will even have a chance to win that bottle of wine if they wear their LBC name tag! If attending this program at the clubhouse you may choose to stay for lunch or not. Remember though, you must make a reservation for Zooming in, attending at the clubhouse for program only, or for the program and lunch. Inhouse seating is limited so RSVP early! If you aren’t a member yet, now is the time. Contact Cheryl Lanfear (mclanfear@yahoo.com) Membership Chair - she will send you a copy of the member enrollment form. Dues are just $30.00 and worth every penny!!

PAG Club ONLY members are eligible to join the Ladies Beach Club!!

ello SPYC and Riding Club members! My name is Bob Frazee and my wife Juli and I became members of SPYC in November of 2019. We are sailors and currently have a Sabre 426 42 ft. sailboat named JULIANNE. We have owned this boat since 2006 and have sailed throughout the Great Lakes, the U.S. coastal waters from Eastport, ME to Pensacola, the Bahamas, Florida Keys, Cuba, and many ports of call in between. We now keep our boat at our home in the Broadwater Development on the Boca Ciega Bay. I am also an avid motorcyclist and have enjoyed riding motorcycles since I was a teen; having had numerous motorcycles over the years. Currently I ride a Harley Davidson Fat Boy when in Florida, and a Harley Davidson Tri Glide trike when I am in upstate New York.

Fat Boy Harley

Recently, I was elected President of the Riding Club, replacing Bart Franey and Bill Tinsley, who both decided not to continue their membership in SPYC. We currently have several openings in our slate of officers, and I am recruiting SPYC members to help out with filling these vacancies. Specifically, we need a Vice President and a Secretary. Neither position will be very time consuming nor require participation in our weekly rides.

Currently we have an incredibly dedicated core group of Riders however, we are always looking for, and welcome, fresh new faces to join in on our weekly rides and monthly meetings. While it is not a requirement to participate in any of our events, I welcome new ideas and suggestions regarding the days we ride, our destination routes, lunch choices, Covid-19 and social distancing concerns, what might help make our events more attractive to you, or anything else which will encourage more participation.

Speaking of our weekly rides, I would love to hear from our current, and prospective members, what they would like to see and do as a member of the “Riders Club”.

I am looking forward to meeting those of you who I haven’t yet met, and to hearing from all of you regarding what we can do to improve the Riders Club.

Captain Els Wiemken and the “Bingo Babes” presented Carol Hansen with a beautiful card with printed one-liners from all the participants along with a gift card to her favorite restaurant. Salty Sister Bingo has provided a great community during the social distancing these past few months.

FLEET

Cruising Fleet Together

by Willy Bain, Fleet Captain

O

ctober/November was a busy time, with two monthly meetings, the Mini-Commodore’s Cruise, and the Blessing of the Fleet. Had it not been for the assistance of the “Fleet Admiral” Caryn Bain, I’m afraid the Fleet Captain might have been forced by the Fleet to walk the plank! The monthly meetings saw a very good turnout with SPYC guidelines and social distancing a priority.

Our Port Directors: Camille Iurillo & Joe Petrella, Gary & Pam Haas, and David & Martha Monfried, worked hard to organize a tremendous seven days!

David & Martha Monfried

Gary & Pam Haas

The “Mini-Commodore’s Cruise” consisted of three stops (Longboat Key Resort, Sarasota Cruising Fleet at play YC, with some stopping at Bird Key YC, and the final stop at Twin Dolphins Marina. Fifteen boats participant and from all accounts had a great time.

Our next event was the Blessing of the Fleet; a maritime tradition. With an impressive turnout, the Rev Canon Brandon Peete Officiating Party for the Blessing blessed 20 boats on the water and 5 at the docks. In attendance on the Blessing Vessel were the Commodore (David Mendelblatt), Vice Commodore (Bill Waters), Rear Commodore (Brian Smith), Treasurer (Scott Boyle), Fleet Captain (Willy Bain) and Rev. Canon Peete.

We kayaked/paddle boarded, swam, play bocce ball, went sightseeing/shopping, and of course, socialized during docktails and dinners.

Upcoming events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: • Cruising Fleet Awards & Holiday Party – December 11th, 2020 • Lighting of the Yachts – December 12th, 2020

Pete Sailing Center, where they were used in the Youth Sailing Program — a return delayed waiting the completion of the dock construction at PAG. All is ready now for members to spend time “in” the boats, and on the water!

On October 31st, Juliette Clark, Carol Hansen, Carin Korros, Gwen Mann, Joanne Simmons, and Angela Treinen gathered at the Club at Pass-a-Grille to inventory and repair sails, clean boats, replace lines, check rudders and dagger boards, and assemble equipment in the Broad Reachers’ storage trailer. The boats had been returned from their summer home at the St.

We’ve assembled two Broad Reacher teams for upcoming interclub events. At the interclub to be hosted by the Dinghy Dames of the Davis Island Yacht Club, the Opti team will be Carin Korros and Joanne Simmons, and Marti Cochran will be competing in Sunfish. For the FWSA Championship Regatta, hosted by the Salty Sisters at the St. Pete Sailing Center November 17th, a team of Gina Bowden-Pierce, Marti Cochran, and Joanne Simmons, are set to represent the Broad Reachers in an Ideal 18.

s the water rat said to the mole, “There is nothing — absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats....In or out of ‘em, it doesn’t matter.” (Wind in the Willows) The Broad Reachers are avid sailors, but sailing or not, they never miss a chance to just mess around with boats, especially when the time comes to clean up and organize boats for a season of sailing.

RV LAND CRUISERS by Angela Kowalik, President

R

Ving isn’t just a vacation, it’s also a lifestyle. Steve Lattmann and Larry Cramer usually spend summers at Hearthside Grove, a luxury motorcoach resort in Petoskey Michigan. These types of motorcoach facilities offer firepits, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, and bungalows or “casitas” on your own lot—your “wheelestate”. It certainly is a different lifestyle, traveling between your “homes” in your “home”. Like other RVers, Steve and Larry travel around Larry Cramer and Steve Lattmann enjoying on the road, or live it up at their other homesite in Michigan. their favorite destination.

One advantage of traveling north is seeing the beautiful fall foliage colors. Many people take a trip for “leaf peeping”, or just happen to experience it at their destination. Up in Fall Foliage Michigan, the fall colors are spectacular in late September through mid-late October. Who knew there were so many shades and hues of red, yellow, orange and even purple! To join the group and keep up with our events where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik at koalafam@tampabay.rr.com. SMOOTH SAILING | DECEMBER 2020
