CHAPTER THREE 2

COMMODORE’S LOG H

appy New Year! I hope you have made resolutions that will be challenging, yet worthwhile. Let’s hope that 2021 is a less interesting year than 2020. May it bring peace, prosperity, good health and favorable winds.

Looking farther ahead, Summer Camp Registration is officially open for members. Camps are available for children ages 5-16. For more details please contact our Sailing Center at 727-8223113 or online: www.sailstpete.org.

In Florida, this is the beginning of our sailing season. When the rest of the country is chipping ice off their boats and shoveling snow, we have lots of sailboat racing in these short, cool days. Some upcoming regattas being held at SPYC over the next few months include: Snipe Florida State Championship and Multihull Regatta, Disabled Regatta, J-Fest, Winter Foil Regatta, Valentine’s Regatta, Crown Cars Regatta, Habana Regatta, Ted Irwin Memorial Pusser’s Rum Cup, Suncoast Race Week, NOOD Regatta, Regatta Del Sol al Sol, Twilight Sailing, Snipe Masters Worlds, US Match Racing Regatta, and the Lightning and Thistles Midwinter Championships. For a full list of regattas, NOR’s, and online entry, please visit www.spyc.org/regattas.

I’d like to thank our members for contributing to our annual Employee Holiday Fund, making it a big success! Please continue to support them by using our Club and being generous with those who serve us and make the membership experience enjoyable. Remember that because of Covid, fewer events are being held at the Club, which unfortunately means reduced hours and decreased tips. Please use our clubhouse to the level you feel comfortable and let your servers know you appreciate them, as well as those who work “behind the scenes.”

If you are looking for a good reason to come visit SPYC, here are a few Club hosted events: • Something for the Kids and their Parents taking place this month - SPYC Kids Video Game Bus Party & Game Show Night featuring “The Really Wed Game” are both taking place Saturday, January 9th. • Comedy Night with a very funny comedian - Frank Del Pizzo on Friday, January 22nd (full details to these events are listed in this issue).

Finally, I’d like to end this Commodore’s Log by sharing photos from a recent family boating trip. My 2021 resolution is to try to avoid distraction during the important moments of my life and to remember what really matters. Respectfully,

For up to date Club events and news, please don’t forget to LIKE the St. Petersburg Yacht Club on Facebook or follow us on Instagram. Commodore David Mendelblatt

In Rememberance

P.C. TOBY KRAYER

K

RAYER, Alfred C. Jr. “Toby” a son of St. Petersburg who became one of the city’s business and civic leaders, died Sunday, November 22, 2020. He was 89. Mr. Krayer died at Bayfront Hospital, where he had undergone emergency surgery a week earlier. His devoted wife, his daughters and his oldest granddaughter, a physician, were at his side. “Toby” Krayer was born December 7, 1930, the youngest of three children with two older sisters. At St. Petersburg High School, he was a basketball star and was later inducted into the school’s sports hall of fame. He went to Duke University on a basketball scholarship, and he earned a bachelor’s degree in business and economics. After graduation, he served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon returning to St. Petersburg, Mr. Krayer started a career in banking and soon joined Union Trust Bank in downtown St. Petersburg. Through a series of bank mergers and name changes, Mr. Krayer rose through the ranks. Meanwhile, he earned an advanced degree in banking from Louisiana State University. He also started a family. The young banker courted and married Carole Marie Heiser, who had moved from Ohio to St. Petersburg after college. They had three daughters, who became mothers to six grandchildren. All nine of those descendants also graduated from St. Petersburg High School. One daughter is a teacher there. Ultimately, Mr. Krayer became president of C&S Bank for Pinellas and Pasco counties. When he retired, he had helped countless businesses and individuals arrange their finances. He also had helped launch the careers of other young bankers who would become prominent civic figures themselves. Outside the bank, Mr. Krayer was equally active in civic causes and organizations, serving on various boards and fund-

raising drives. In 2000, he was named Mr. Sun during the city’s Festival of States and rode with honor in the ensuing parade. When he was 11, Toby decorated his own bike and rode along in that year’s parade, when his older sister Miriam was crowned Sungoddess. Mr. Krayer was a member and became commodore of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, a modest irony given that he was slightly prone to seasickness. During and after his banking career, Mr. Krayer served prominently on the board of AAA. Similar to banks, local motor clubs were consolidating into steadily larger businesses. Mr. Krayer helped guide those mergers and represented the local units in national AAA circles. Mr. Krayer is survived by his wife, Carole; his daughters, Karyn Tash (Paul), Kolleen Kellin, and Kathryn Krayer-Zimring (Devin); six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Paul Tash is the chairman and CEO of the Tampa Bay Times. Mr. Krayer was a loving husband and an immensely patient father. None of his daughters can remember him ever raising his voice, even when they gave him cause. Mr. Krayer was a cheerful extrovert with a genuine affection for people. He was a steadfast friend to many, especially Frank Scarritt. Even after Mr. Scarritt moved to Jacksonville to be with his own daughter, the two spoke every day. They were as close as brothers. “Smile and the whole world smiles with you,” his wife recalls Mr. Krayer saying. “Weep and you weep alone.” Because of the pandemic, the family is gathering for a private graveside service at Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Petersburg. The burial will be one day after the 64th anniversary of his wedding. Mr. Krayer will rest in a blue casket, the color of his beloved Duke Blue Devils. Instead of flowers, the family suggests that those who are inclined can make a donation in Mr. Krayer’s honor to a favorite charity.

FEATURED ARTICLE 6

At age 15, John Jennings was skipper of the SPYC Junior Club team that qualified for the 1956 US Yacht Racing Union (USYRU–Sears Cup) junior championship regatta in New Orleans, Louisiana. [Going into the last race his team had a commanding lead. The flag on the starting buoy brushed his boat and, in conformance with the rules of that time, he immediately withdrew from that race. He lost that championship, but he set a notable example of good sportsmanship.]

John won the Florida Sailing Association (FSA) Junior Championship in 1956, 1957 and 1958 and the FSA Men’s Sailing Championship five times between 1960 and 1973. He was 17 years of age when he dominated a 45-boat fleet at the 1958 Thistle Class National Championship regatta sailed at Fairhope, Alabama. The participants included many notable sailors who were very surprised by young John Jennings. In 1958, at age 18, he won the Thistle Class National Championship. In the 1970’s John led SPYC teams to victory in the US Yacht Racing Union Men’s National Sailing Championship (Mallory Cup) and in USYRU Match Racing Championship (Prince of Wales Cup) competitions. He repeated his Prince of Wales win in 1973, and in 1979 he, with son John M. Jennings in the crew, again won the Mallory Cup. In 2007, he won (for the fourth time) the Invitational Masters Championship on San Francisco Bay—an event open only to winners of major national and international championships. In 2016, in his seventh decade of competitive sailing, he won the Corinthian Division of the J70 midwinter championships sailed here in St. Petersburg. We honor for more than his sailing achievements. We honor him for his many contributions to young sailors at SPYC in their transition from Green Fleet to Collegiate to All Americans and beyond, and for the role model he provided countless people in our sailing program. Ed Baird described John’s influence as this: “John was the guy we could go to that could guide us to what we needed in our sailing lives. He knew who to talk to about equipment, how to approach a new race venue and how to deal with the ups and downs of racing.” Allison Jolly, tells us this about “Dr. John:” “I learned from him how to prepare for events, from little things like having a properly equipped ditty bag onboard, to big things like leaving the dock early to check the wind and current. But the unspoken lesson what he taught me.”

The Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club burgee has been a matter of intrigue. Since the remodel of the Regatta Room, it was a mystery as to where it came from or what it represented. With sleuthing efforts, determination, and the cooperation of sailors who were part of this history, the mystery has been revealed. Please read on! “The signed and framed burgee was presented to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club in March 2005. Seawanhaka members Al and Priscilla Constants were among the team racing competitors that signed the burgee. Above Photo: Al Constants presenting the Seawanhaka YC burgee to PC Pat Seidenspinner, March 2005.

The first team racing meeting between the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club occurred in St. Petersburg exactly one year earlier, in the spring of 2004. The race was sailed in Sonars, 2 on 2. Seawanhaka won that first series.

The SPYC team travelled to Oyster Bay, NY, in Oct. 2004, and were hosted at the home of Al and Priscilla Constants, and also in rooms at the yacht club proper during the days of chilly and breezy racing. Sonars were sailed once again, but this time, with spinnakers. Seawanhaka won handily. There was one last meeting of the teams in March 2005, again in St. Petersburg, and again in Sonars, but without spinnakers this time. The signed burgee was presented at the close of this racing series, which Seawanhaka won yet again. In defense of the SPYC team, Seawanhaka’s younger sailors team raced on a very regular basis, frequently even competing internationally in team racing events. The challenge between the two clubs ended there, with good will and special memories to last a lifetime!” [Other Sailors who participated in these events include: PC Rich & Char-Nel Doyle, Joe Frohock…] [Thanks to Renée Athey for this article.]

SPYC MEMBER LIFE EVENTS

SKY SAILING HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD

F

or my partner Heidi Trilsch and myself sailing around the world was a dream for both of us. Sadly, Heidi had to fly back from the Galapagos and is now Heidi on Helm fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer. Now SKY is stuck in Australia until the Covid-19 is under control and we are allowed back in Australia to finish our voyage. Hopefully, we can go back to SKY in Australia, now projected to be the end of 2021! Since our Bon Voyage Reception at the SPYC on Dec. 2nd, 2018, we sailed 1583 miles to Rodney Bay, St Lucia to meet the World ARC 2019. Our ARC voyage started Jan. 12th, 2019 and we sailed to Santa Marta, Columbia, the San Blas Islands, through the Panama Canal which was an adventure unto itself. After 10 days in Panama we sailed to the Galapagos than 3000 miles to the Marquesas, Tuamotus, Society Islands, Cook Islands, Niue, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu and finishing the first half around the world in Mackay, QLD, Australia.

Cruising Club of Australia

Our insurance company did not want SKY to stay in North Queensland during the cyclone season (November to April) and SKY had to be south of Brisbane. We moved the boat to Coomera to have work done after the wear

SPYC member, Jopie Helsen, and crew Bora Bora

and tear of open ocean sailing only to have a direct lightning strike while on land in the Boat Works Yard. The strike destroyed everything electrical and cost $227,000 to repair. So much for avoiding the cyclone season. The positive is that SKY is in better shape than it ever been, and we were able to make many improvements to SKY for sailing the second half of the World ARC. We have been blessed to be able to sail SKY this far and it was a dream come through. On the voyage we I visited most of the yacht clubs on its route, from spartan clubs like the one in Tanna to famous ones like the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia which Heidi and I visited when she joined me in Australia in February. SKY had a slip for 4 weeks at The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Manly, QLD which was established in 1885. All the clubs enjoyed having us visit and welcomed us as sailor’s only can since we all relate to love of adventure and sailing. This has been an incredible adventure and I am looking forward to finishing the circumnavigation of SKY when the Covid virus is under control and the international destinations are open to sailors. SKY is an incredible ocean sailing yacht and is designed to sail the seven seas! Our website: www.svsky57.com (Article contributed by SPYC Member - Jopie Helsen)

Total distance sailed 13,399 nautical miles to Coomera, QLD, Australia Longest leg; Galapagos to Hiva Oa, Marquesas 3000 nautical miles in 17 days Visited 19 countries and territories Distance to complete circumnavigation 16,590 nautical miles, hopefully in 2022 Jopie Helsen has been a member of SPYC since 1966. hen was the last time someone held a parade for you? Whereas, the Commodore’s Ball was added to this year’s list of “Covid Casualities”, there were those who wished to show their heartfelt appreciation to our outgoing Commodore, Michael Blacker, and his lovely wife Jacqueline. On Saturday, November 21st, led by one of St. Pete’s finest patrol cars, a festive (and socially distanced) car parade – complete with signs, burgees, noise makers and a “C” flag (change of watch) – flooded the quiet residential home of the Blackers’. To his surprise, P.C. Blacker came outside to a yard that had been “flocked” with flamingos, ‘CONGRATS’ spelled out in free standing

letters and a sign that said “We flew in to cheer! It’s all Smooth Sailing from here!”. His son Noah, daughter Alexandra, son-inlaw Mike, three grandchildren – Penelope, Amelia, baby Henry – and several furry family members were there to share in the recognition of Michael and Jacqueline. Among the supporters who joined in the festivities were Com. David Mendelblatt and wife Amy who performed a “Change of Watch” of sorts by presenting Jacqueline an orchid. All of us wish them fair winds and smooth sailing!

T

he SPYC Junior Sailing Team has had a busy fall competing in events in and around Tampa Bay. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the local area clubs set up a series events called the Tampa Bay Series. These events catered to our local Opti, Laser and High School Sailors. The series started in September and finished in December with three events for each class. Participation was excellent and the racing was tight with SPYC sailors dominating across all three classes. SPYC was represented by 20 Opti RWB sailors, 11 Green Fleeter’s and 12 Lasers. Eleven members of our Opti RWB racing team made the trek over the Thanksgiving holiday to race in the Opti Midwinter Championships hosted by the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans. John Hartney was our top performer in the RWB fleet finishing in 13th overall in a fleet of 110 boats. Also racing were Rosie Simpson, Jan Mistak, Chris Shaffer, Anna Andert, Maija Andert, Jackson Lee, Leah Abrams, and

Finn Cox. SPYC Green Fleeter’s Ethan Cox and Cooper Lee also competed. The SPYC Laser Team travelled to Houston Texas to compete in the Laser Gulf Coast Championship in October. Guthrie Braun took the overall win in the laser Radial Class putting in a strong performance in the light conditions. Guthrie was followed by Kate Danielson in 7th overall and 2nd female. Emily Allen and Sidney Moyer also made the trip. SPYC hosted the 2020 Laser District 13 Championships over the weekend of November 14-15. hat a way to Stephen Foster Memorial Carillon end the year by enjoying the RV, good friends, and folk history while visiting Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park in north Florida. They have many special events here, such as the holiday Festival of Lights display (the reason we came). You probably know many of Stephen Foster melodies, such as The Old Folks at Home (and phrase “Way down upon the Swanee Ribber” or Suwannee River) which is the state song of Florida. And you might be reminded of just how many of his tunes you recognize when you hear the songs played out with bells from the 97-bell memorial carillon in the center of the park (one of the largest musical instruments ever produced in the Western Hemisphere and the world’s largest tubular bell carillon).

Sarah & Rick Moseley

Making the journey were Rick & Sarah Moseley, Brian & Angela Kowalik, Ken & Corrine St. Jean, and a few other neighbor friends. Every night we met around the campfire to share stories of the day, recent RV adventures, or future trip plans and while enjoying the cool evenings. That’s what campfires do, let you “daydream” while being mesmerized by the flames and embers. We are already making plans for our next holiday adventure in hopes that our world will be back to normal. Perhaps more of you Campfire will join us! To join the group and keep up with our events where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik at koalafam@tampabay.rr.com

ot everyone in the Wing Shooters Society has a nick name. If we had rules, that should be the first one; nick names are required. Gene Collins, pictured above, is our third Grand Marshall. The spelling of his title is significant as the double “l” is a sign of earned respect. He even volunteered, railroaded might be more accurate, to continue as our leader for a second year. Gene is a graduate of Troy State; that’s up there in Alabama. He spread his southern charm across the US during his career with Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, aka 3M. One big skill is his ability to keep our monthly meetings at the interface separating decorum from

chaos. We get through the agenda, make the hard decisions, have a great time while doing it, and nobody goes home offended. But Gene needs an aka after his name. I have one in mind. By the time you read this, it might have stuck. We meet on the second Thursday at 6:00 pm in the Quarter Deck Room. Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact, Grand Marshall Gene Collins at (727) 385-4878, or genebcollins@hotmail.com.
