CHAPTER 6 2

COMMODOG’S LOG H

ello SPYC Members, In honor of April Fools Day, Commodore Byrne was foolish enough to allow me, Commodog Sophie, to be your guest logger and welcome you to the month of April showers and flowers, with a springtime that is fast becoming a distant memory in these little latitudes. From all of the past

the surroundings. I got so excited I was ready to jump in and assist with the digging but they said the worker’s comp wouldn’t cover me. I said, “Hey come on, throw me a bone!” but they weren’t having any of it. At any rate, it won’t be long before members will be having water fights. I suggest you bring a Yeti cup with a cover to keep the coolness in, the splash water out, and be green all at

Commodores I’ve had the pleasure to have sniffed, I’ve come to understand that the deadline for these writing chores can sneak up on you like a cat in the dead of night, which gave me paws for thought, so I figured I’d give the old man a break and take on these duties this month. Actually, I have been boning up for this task for quite a while. As a preliminary matter, I’d like to set the record straight about a couple of things. First of all, I am not a Rottweiler! Nor am I the product of some chance encounter between a Doberman and a German Shepherd, one of whom jumped a backyard fence in an effort to further dilute his gene pool. I am an AKC registered Beauceron, a very old breed from France, well known for battlefield heroics that is still used in the freer parts of Europe for water rescue, in addition to herding sheep. Those double-dew claws on my hind legs act like fins in the water and are useful for climbing on backs of sheep. And when herding sheep, we don’t nip at the heels or give them the stink-eye to control them like those other wussy breeds….Beaucerons throw body-blocks. So if I get excited when you pet me and start turning in circles, keep a wary eye on my tail end. Secondly, I am not a boy! I am a girl through and through and a very pretty girl at that, especially when staring at the food on your table after I hit the cute button. So stop calling me fella, guy or boy! “Hi girl,” or “hello gorgeous,” would do just fine. I may be bigboned, but I’m no hefer and still dainty. Turning to Club news, the Commodore’s Cruise is coming up on May 9th 19th for the SPYC Cruising Fleet. If you’re interested, contact the Fleet Captain, Angela Kowalik, for details. The Club owes Angela a hearty thanks for her tireless efforts and tremendous talents she puts into organizing this and other events. Personally, I think she might be a cat person, but I won’t hold that against her. I’m pleased to report that the construction of the pool at Pass-a-Grille is proceeding rather nicely and really taking shape. Instead of that lame photo shopped picture the Commodore inserted in the last Log, I’ve included one that really shows the dimensions against

the same time. As you may recall, in the March issue Commodore Byrne had the temerity to start a contest wherein the winner will receive a bottle of Dom Perignon for coming up with the location of an “Island Crossover” sign, shown in the picture to the left. I want to give a bark-out to Veronica Hickey for taking the first shot and guessing a spot on Weedon Island, and Alex Deininger for guessing a spot on Jungle Prada. Not even close, gang, but thanks for playing! I can tell you that even though it is an absolutely fair contest, the old man made it pretty hard, and Manager Reydams has been leaning on the Commodore to make it a little easier. Now, I have personally been to that spot on several occasions and have even marked it a few times myself, so I’m in the unique position to give you a hint or two. You already know that it’s an island in Pinellas, so you can forget about places like Egmont or Passage Keys, which are in Hillsborough and Manatee counties. Here are a couple of more hints: If you take a chart and draw an east-west line running through the downtown Club, this spot is south of that line. Lastly, the boat shown in the picture is about 150 ft. away from the spot in question. Good luck with your continued quest. Happy hunting and have a great month!

Commodog Sophie

THISTLES 64th Annual

MIDWINTERS EAST CHAMPIONSHIPS by Karen Park, Event Chair

O

n the last weekend of February our boat park got invaded by Thistle sailors from around the country to enjoy our “no snow” policy of life in Florida. They arrive a little early to shake off the cobwebs and enjoy the Bay, sunshine, and coaching. Racing began on Monday, February 25th and continued through March 1st with 35 boats participating. Matt Fisher, from Ohio, jumped out to a quick lead winning both races on Monday and the first race on Tuesday.

again, racing was called for the day. We completed a race on Wednesday and one on Thursday. Friday was cancelled due to lack of wind.

Monday was sailed in a strong breeze with building seas and gusts. Regatta PRO Todd Fedyszyn did a great job and made the wise call to stop after 2 races on the first day. Tuesday the boats were under a slight delay before racing began. They got another 2 races in before the skies completely opened up and

I would like to thank Todd and his outstanding group of volunteers for their efforts in getting the races in. Also, Gloria Davis for the use of her boat for Signal and John Deermount for co-chairing the event and putting together the successful Shuffleboard Party on Thursday night.

APRIL 2019 | SMOOTH SAILING

Matt Fisher won the event with Craig Koschalk, of Ohio, in 2nd and Aaron Holland from upstate New York in 3rd. Seth Rosenthal of SPYC finished 11th overall and 2nd in the “B” Fleet as well as the highest placed Florida boat.

SPYC’s high school sailors were busy with back-to-back South Points Regatta’s finishing up the 7 race qualifying series. Shorecrest sailed a strong final event securing a 5th place

overall finish and a spot in the District Championships. Sailors from St Pete HS and Shorecrest will also compete in the SAISA Girls District Championships in Jacksonville. The SPYC Opti Team was well represented at the USODA Sunshine State Championships with 3 sailors competing in the Opti Green Fleet and 10 sailors competing in the Opti RWB. BROAD REACHERS by Marti Cochran

Training

T

he Broad Reachers invite and encourage women members of SPYC to join us at Pass-a-Grille on Saturday mornings, as we sail for fun and work on our sailing and racing skills. There is no such thing as “too little” experience to join the Broad Reachers. We’ll help you learn and have fun doing it! Our Saturday morning sails are usually followed by lunch at the Beach Club. Contact Carol Hansen (carol@ dband1.com) for more information. Each year, during the months of February and March, women sailors in clubs up and down Florida’s Gulf Coast work on their racing skills, in preparation for the Florida Women’s Sailing Association’s (FWSA) signature event, the Rainbow Regatta. As in past years, the Broad Reachers have conducted practices with the Salty Sisters, sailing in Pass-a-Grille on Saturdays and downtown on Wednesdays. Under coach JP Creignou, the practices have been physically and mentally challenging, with starting drills, tacking drills, stop-start drills, training in mark rounding strategies and related rules, boat balance, course awareness, and downwind tactics and strategies, among others. Thank you to our great coach J.P. and to our Pass-a-Grille mark boat drivers Nancy Dunn and Charl Hadfield, as well as Barbara Watson, Gwen Mann, Julia Sorbo, Mary McCarthy, Barbara Arnold, and Anne O’Dell, who worked to support our practices.

We also were joined on the water by our newest Broad Reacher, Vanessa Beckman, who bravely joined our drills and held her own against more experienced sailors! We look forward to Vanessa joining the racing team next year.

Vanessa Beckman

Representatives from the Broad Reachers, Joanne Simmons and Marti Cochran, also have been active off the water, serving on FWSA’s Long Range Planning Committee, which has developed a series of recommendations to enhance women’s Interclub sailing and education. Training

O

n February 13th, the Salty Sisters held their Valentine’s luncheon. There was a sea of red, as many Salties dressed in the Valentine colors. Our Social Chair, Nita George, had some beautiful Valentine’s Day cards to send to the many Salties that have not been to lunch in a while. Everyone signed and added some personal notes to the cards. The lunch was topped off by an ice cream sundae bar….yum!! Co-Captain Kathy Ahern organized two CPR certification classes in February and about 50 Salty Sisters and some Briney Brothers completed the class. JP Creignou The Rainbow Regatta was held recently. On March 18th, we had eight Salty Sisters competing against ten other clubs this year. Jennifer Paramore did a wonderful job putting together the team of sailors and the many volunteers needed to help. This year the Regatta was hosted by the Clearwater Bowchasers and Dunedin’s Windlasses sailing out of the Clearwater Sailing Center. Even with the inconsistent weather the month prior, we were able to get in some training with J.P. Creignou coaching both in the classroom and on the water. Our sailing team consists of: (IOD’s) Joanne Simmons, Iris Mastry, Judy Clapp, Carol Hansen, and Dee Gill. (Clearwater Prams) Lori Leadbetter, Nancy Kadau, and Sarah Richards.

an Colton, or should we say Mrs. Tidbit, posed with the Ladies Beach Club board members after our February program meeting. She described the 1920’s in St. Petersburg in wonderful detail. She even was an occasional guest at the SPYC and explained it as the focal point of downtown. It was great having Nan back – she’s been a “fav” of ours for many years no matter what character portrayed. Vicki Dewey, of the PAG Woman’s Club, presented a very enlightening program in March while painting on fabric and glass. She gave us many gift ideas for family and friends with some unusual techniques! As a bonus, some of us will test her techniques with our grandchildren. We also learned that one need not be artistic to produce artful projects.

erman Amaya had not been shooting for 30 years. That changed when Herman met Gene Collins at the Club. Their wives, Sylvia and Marlene, are friends. After some coaxing, a bit of Gene’s mentorship, and a few trips to the range with a borrowed and ugly duck hunting gun, Herman was hooked on sporting clays. In short order Herman acquired a beautiful Beretta double barrel shotgun.

April 15 John Collins, Executive Director of the St Pete Art Alliance, will talk to us about the creative and colorful murals painted on buildings in downtown. St. Pete is known worldwide for its colorful urban murals and street art. This is a must see program! April 15th | 10:45 am sign-in | 11:00 am short meeting followed by St. Pete murals, by John Collins Make you lunch reservations by Friday, April 12th (727-360-1646). Be sure to mention any special dietary needs when you reserve. Come join in the fun!! Membership forms are available at SPYC.org. Call or email Membership Chairwoman, Linda Christman, 727-561-0618 (Siblink@aol.com) to join or renew. It’s $30.00 annually and worth every penny!

PAG Club ONLY members are eligible to join the Ladies Beach Club!!

After a stint in the Air Force, where he had last shot a gun, Herman earned a degree in electrical engineering by means of a McNamara scholarship. As you might expect Herman is a detail guy with a very successful career. His finger prints can be found in NASA’s Apollo Space Flight equipment, Shuttle Launch systems, and circling the Earth in the Space Station. Herman stays busy.

Herman Amaya

Here’s where this story gets interesting. Apparently Herman had no need for shorts. He’d wear blue jeans on even the hottest days when out shooting clays. Just looking at a dripping wet Herman made the rest of us feel hot. One day at the end of a Wine Society evening someone asked Sylvia if Herman had any shorts. No he doesn’t, he’s an engineer. Now thanks to Sylvia and a suitably clothed Herman, we all feel cooler on those warm shooting days.

The Wing Shooters Society meets monthly on the 2nd Thursday at 6:00 pm. Those wishing to join are encouraged to contact our Grand Marshal Gene Collins at 727-385-4878 or genebcollins@hotmail.com. APRIL 2019 | SMOOTH SAILING

ride with seven members enjoying the beautiful spring weather. And what ride wouldn’t be complete without some great Bar-B-Que, which is tied with Mexican, as a favored food choice for our group. Our Riders left the Curly Tails Restaurant in Bradenton happily sated and ready for the ride home. Next up is a ride to Dade City. Our Ride Scout approved a new route and even though we’ll venture on a few dirt roads, we’re up for the adventure. Let’s hope it doesn’t rain like that last time we rode in dirt. It makes for a very muddy bike but it sharpens your riding skills! We’re still planning on a Key West Ride in late April or May. You’re welcome to join us on this 3 day excursion. Next meeting: Tuesday, April 16th at 6:15 pm - downtown Club. Come on out and see what we’re about!

CRUISING FLEET by Angela Kowalik, Fleet Captain

ur February “Frostbite” cruise turned into a Fabulous February cruise instead because that’s the kind of weather we had for our Feb. 8-10 weekend at Marina Jack’s in Sarasota. Kevin & Debbie Hopper teamed with Rob & Michele Matthes as our February Port Directors. Together they arranged a warm welcome for the fifteen boats who made the trip, joined by a few iron dinghyers. On Friday, we were greeted with the now infamous “Pain Killers” before dining at the marina. On Saturday, many enjoyed the Famer’s Market as well as the enormous 31st Annual Downtown

Sarasota Festival of the Arts. That evening, we ventured back downtown for al fresco dining at Amore. Thank you to the Hopper’s and Matthes’ for a great weekend! Upcoming Events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy: • Cruising Fleet Luncheon – Thursday, April 11 (11:30 social, noon lunch, program to follow) • April Cruise to Tampa Yacht Club – April 12-14 Our April 11 Luncheon Program Meeting will feature a preview of the activities and events planned for our annual May Commodore’s Cruise presented by each of the Port Directors who will describe some of the festivities planned at each port of call.
