Bay Regatta
by Selga Sakss, Regatta Chair
T
he Ted Irwin Memorial Fall Bay Regatta held on Saturday, October 12th had 26 boats competing in Spinnaker, Racer-Cruiser, and Cruising classes. Winds of 7-9kn were enough to start the Racer-Cruiser and Cruising classes on a 14.5 nm course around government marks. Spinnaker A and B divisions started soon afterward for what was planned to be three windward- leeward races but finished the first race on a dying wind that held for the remainder of the day. Three of the five Racer-Cruiser competitors were able to finish within the time frame but the lack of wind prevented any of the Cruising class to finish in time. Dinner and awards were held as planned with a very special guest attending.

Michelle Payne, Ted Irwin’s daughter, gave a brief history of her father’s life, his passion for designing and building boats, his accomplishments as a competitive racer, Ted’s bout with leukemia, and the family’s decision to bequeath a Deed of Gift in his memory. Michelle presented the Ted Irwin Memorial Perpetual Trophy to DIYC skipper J A Booker and crew sailing Shambala who took a First Place overall in the Spinnaker fleet. SPYC competitors also taking home trophies were Jody Abrams, Michael Siedlecki, Meg Gimmi, and Joseph Toth. A hearty Thank You to PRO George Pennington and all of the Race Committee who made it happen! Complete results can be found on the SPYC website under Regattas-Results.

A
s the year closes it’s a great time to reflect on the wonderful accomplishments of our Club in 2019. Our Pass-a-Grille location has a wonderful pool that gets quite a bit of use for recreation, parties, and afternoon playtime. A huge shout out to our innovative and creative Membership Committee as they look for new ways to broaden Club membership. We’ve seen an increase in family and young adult entertainment that draws more multi-generation members to the Club. Our “Clubs Within the Club” offers so many activities they are too long to list. SPYC continues to shine as a premier entertainment and dining facility in downtown St. Petersburg.

he Saltwater Anglers hosted the 2019 SPYC Bob Lee Memorial Fishing Tournament on Saturday, October 26th at SPYC @ Pass-a-Grille.
The Commodore Robert E. Lee Saint Petersburg Yacht Club Fishing Trophy was awarded to Tom Wallace
Thanks to all who participated and helped make the Bob Lee Memorial Tournament a great success. Despite rough weather 10 boats toughed it out fishing the bay and near shore landing a variety of fish. With 30 species as point scoring targets, this tournament can be won by any team with the right strategy. This year was an excellent demonstration. Second place team War Chant, in a 38 Out Island, ventured the furthest offshore in heavy seas. DECEMBER 2019 | SMOOTH SAILING
War Chant had the largest King Mackerel for 3 points, 1st and 2nd place Barracuda for 5 points, and 2nd place Spanish Mackerel for a total of 10 points. PC Tom Wallace on Yerba Buena won the tournament fishing inshore with 1st place Snook for 3 points, 1st and 2nd place Redfish for 5 points, 1st and 2nd place Snapper for 5 points, and tied for 2nd Grunt for 1 ½ points, totaling 14 ½! Thanks to all our sponsors who helped raise over $2,200 for a charity with the mission to support all U.S. military service members, veterans, and their families through physical, educational, and emotional programs in an effort to eliminate suicide. Blessing of the Fleet – Officiating Committee
FLEET by Willy Bain, Fleet Captain (Incoming)
A
s your new Cruising Fleet Captain, I am honored to have been asked to serve this truly fun group of boaters and will strive to keep the Fleet cruising as our Past Fleet Captain Angela has done for a miraculous five-year span. In October, the Fleet’s outing was to Galati’s Yacht Basin on Anna Maria Island (10/25-10/27) with activities arranged October Port Directors – by Charlotte & Ray Noyes. The event Charlotte & Ray Noyes included “Docktails”, dinner at both the “Eliza Ann” and “Sea Food Shack” with transportation provided by the colorfully decorated, music booming “Monkey Bus”; Awaiting Transportation – “The Monkey Bus an interactive party bus that relives the spirit of the 60s. The cruise ended with a spin through town accompanied by singing and joyous celebration. Charlotte & Ray Noyes have once again harmonized a wonderful weekend cruise.
In November, the Cruising Fleet participated in the “Blessing of the Fleet” (11/3) with 13 boats being blessed at sea with three blessings dockside followed by a good turnout at the “Jazz Brunch”. Those officiating were Commodore Blacker, Vice Commodore Mendelblatt, Rear Commodore Waters, Fleet Captain, and Rev. Peete aboard the Vessel “Next Chapter”. The Cruising Fleet also sponsored the presentation “Yachts That Went To War” by author Robert N. Macomber. This presentation was open to the entire Club and explored the story of elegant yachts, focusing on four poignant tales about vessels which were turned into warships during the Spanish-American War. Upcoming events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: • December Annual Holiday & Awards Dinner – Friday Dec. 13 • Lighting of the Yachts – Saturday Dec. 14 Inquire or sign-up for our events on the SPYC Website, Cruising Fleet page. here to shoot is easily the second most important decision we make every Friday. A gun club might have great sporting clay courses, but if there’s no good eating nearby, we won’t shoot there. That’s right, eating afterwards is the number 1 priority. When we shoot Sarasota Trap-Skeet & Clays it’s the Lucky Pelican, just off I-75 at University…great seafood. As we drive back from Tampa Bay Sporting Clays, two good choices are Hungry Harry’s, a mom & pop BBQ place that serves collards, or this “Old Florida” place called Ukulele Brands. Both are on Land O’Lakes Blvd.
When we travel to Fish Hawk, it’s a circle the bay day. We drive there via the Skyway Bridge; but we are not coming back that way. We return via the Selmon Expressway because of two places found in proximity to the get-on point. Those would be the La Septima Café, a hole in the wall serving great Cuban food, and the Islamorada Fish Company which is convenient for replenishing essential shooting supplies. It’s located next to Bass Pro Shops. As you can see from the Wing Shooters venue map, we shoot and eat all around the bay. Our monthly meetings are on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm.
Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Grand Marshall Gene Collins at 727-385-4878 or genebcollins@hotmail.com. DECEMBER 2019 | SMOOTH SAILING

REACHERS by Marti Cochran
T
he Club at Pass-a-Grille produced a gem of a day for the 48th Annual Commodore Lucas Cup Regatta, the signature event of the Broad Reachers’ fall sailing season. The October 11th event featured clear skies, fair winds, a T-dock full of spectators, and a field of competitors from women’s sailing clubs up and down Florida’s central Gulf Coast. The five-race series requires sailors to return to the docks and switch to a different assigned boat in-between races — a feature posing challenges to racers as well as boat handlers, who must catch incoming boats at the docks and assist sailors in finding and settling into new boats for each new race. Chair Carol Hansen organized a great team of volunteers from the Broad
Reachers and other clubs. Thanks to PRO Gloria Davis and Race Committee Jennifer Parramore, Mary McCarthy, Tricia Billings, Betty Hurley, Barbara Arnold, and Dotty Bellefleur (Windlasses); Mark/Safety Boat crew George Simmons and Gwen Mann; Safety Ashore Julia Sorbo; Registrars Ginny Daniels and Connie DuBois; and boat handlers Joanne Simmons, Angela Treinen, Debbie Walcutt, Marti Cochran, Margo Currey (Windlasses), Linda Schwartz & Ursula Olson (Luffing Lassies), and Carol McClain (Mainsheet Mamas). And thanks to our Broad Reachers sailors, Carol Hansen and Heather LaLanne! Special guests Spencer Lucas and Betty Sanders joined us for lunch, and Spencer presented trophies to the winner, second and third place finishers: 1st place Lisa Ehrhart (Luffing Lassies/ Sarasota); 2nd Julie Sargent (Mainsheet Mamas/Tampa); and 3rd Cathy McNally (Bow Chasers/Clearwater).
