COMMODORE’S LOG D

ear SPYC Members, Welcome to fall, some cooler weather, and all the holiday festivities in and around the Club and on the water. All Club locations are buzzing with activities. I love to see our Club returning to normal and exceeding our expectations! I am pleased to announce that the Club has continued to experience a huge increase in new members - one of the largest increases in its history! This month, the trend continues, and I invite new members to participate, make yourself at home, meet new friends, and enjoy your Club. The Entertainment Committee has been extremely busy working hard to schedule many new, exciting, and fun events this year. I urge you to participate, and sign up early when events are announced. With the enthusiasm and quality of these events, I’m sure they will sell out quickly. On the sailing front, the Annual Yachting Recognition Awards is right around the corner and nominations are now being accepted. Complete information on this prestigious event can be found within this issue. We are thrilled to be hosting some exciting regattas this month and into 2022. A few include: America's Disabled Regatta, High School Keelboat National Championship, Snipe Master National Championship, and more. Regatta details can be found on the website, www.spyc.org.

On the powerboat front, the Powerboat Competition Committee ran the downtown Poker Run in October. The committee did a fantastic job arranging for 6 stops and coordinating for over 25 boats and 160 participants! The next Poker Run will be held at our Pass-a-Grille location in the spring. Be sure to never miss one of these very fun events! Speaking of our Pass-a-Grille Beach Club, I urge you to visit that location if you have not been there lately. In the last several years, the Club has invested almost $900,000 in new docks, new rest/shower rooms, new pool, and a repair and update to the inside of the building. Management and staff at PAG will make you feel right at home! Finally, the Entertainment Committee will be coordinating a new tradition at the Yacht Club. The event will be a meet and greet to introduce Club members to the new Commodore, his wife, and the Flag Officers and their spouses. This event will be held on Friday, January 7th, 6:30 to 9:00 pm in the Quarterdeck with complimentary light Hors d’oeuvres and wine. Mary and I and the Flags look forward to meeting you all on January 7th. Fair winds and calm seas,

Bill Waters, Commodore

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. DECEMBER 2021 | SMOOTH SAILING

GENERAL MANAGER’S LOG 55

General Manager’s Log by: Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM

D

ear Members, The weather outside is delightful with cooler days and nights, you can feel holiday cheer all around our facilities. You will notice a lot more activities around the Club this month with the Club decked out for the holidays. We will be very busy with holiday parties and Club events. Remember our Sunday Brunch is now being served upstairs in the ballroom. It’s hard to believe its December and we are closing in on yet another year. How time flies when you’re having fun! I would like to wish each of you Happy Holidays while spending time with family and friends during this wonderful time of year. When at the Club you may notice tables with burgees (flags) on it and wonder, what do those mean? – This is a tradition in Yacht Clubs across the world signifying: Officers of the Club, Past Commodores, visitors from other Yacht Clubs, New Members, and members who have a personal family burgee. Here at SPYC we try to acknowledge our Past Commodores and Flag Officers, including the Treasurer and Secretary. In addition, you may notice a "Pineapple Burgee" on a table - this burgee signifies "welcoming hospitality" particularly with our new members. This aids in the introduction from tendered members to reach out and welcome those new members to the Club. If you are a new member, making a reservation will help us to know when you are coming so we can have a Pineapple Burgee on your table ahead of time. Reservations Please! It’s that time of year where we are seeing more and more of our membership utilizing the Club’s facilities Downtown and at the Beach Club. With that said, we strongly encourage reservations at all meal periods. I cannot stress the importance of reservations here at the Club. As we close out 2021 with usage in the Club rising, despite the unprecedented times we are in, 2022 is showing early signs that this trend will continue. It is very helpful that you try and honor your reservation time. So many times, members are enjoying the camaraderie of their friends, which is what a Club is about, and time slips away and then everyone decides to sit and order all at once. This is when it becomes more difficult to serve you in the manner that is expected of us.

Reservations help us plan accordingly in making sure we have the appropriate staff on the floor and product on hand. Even if you decide you are coming to the Club for lunch or dinner last minute give us a call for a heads up. Membership is a privilege and with that privilege comes responsibilities as a member. One is to share the Club with friends and family and proposing new members. Another is utilizing the Club and supporting Club events. Your attendance is what employs our staff and allows them to make a decent living while wanting to continue their employment here at SPYC. Of equal importance, abiding to the House Rules and Regulations to continue our image as a fine Club. To that end, your House and Grounds committee has been reviewing some of the House Rules and one that stood out was the Dress Code throughout the Club’s facilities. It seems as if this had been extremely relaxed over the years and most lately due to COVID. The committee reviewed several of our neighboring club rules and have come up with what they feel is appropriate for the SPYC. The plan is to roll out the new Dress Code sometime after the beginning of 2022. Once adopted, enforcement will be the key. In closing, it has been an unprecedented couple years for all of us. The good news is that the Club will survive and has survived. Due to the great leadership of past and present Boards, the Club has sound financial processes in place to get us through this storm. The Club has a strong balance sheet and our capital is looking good. The health of a Club is through its capital not the operating ledger and for years your Club has done it right to weather us through this pandemic. I look forward to meeting everyone in the coming months as I make myself visible around our various facilities. Cheers!

Long Range Planning Update:

T

he Member Survey undertaken earlier this fall is providing the backbone for our Strategic Planning process. We thank all of you who participated; you may have received the Executive Summary of the survey by now; if not, keep your eyes on your inbox! One of the most interesting pieces that came out of the survey is a way of looking at satisfaction and loyalty. Mike Morin of Club Benchmarking provides this explanation: The Net Promoter Score is a research-based question created by Bain & Co. that determines member loyalty. The question asks survey participants to rate on a level from 0 to 10 how likely are they to recommend a brand to friends or family. Research shows that survey respondents who answered 0 to 6 are less likely to come back as well as promote the brand. Individuals that reply 7 or 8 are not speaking negatively towards the brand nor are strictly loyal. Survey respondents that selected 9 or 10 actively promote the brand. As a non-profit organization, we are unable to market the club through traditional marketing efforts which is why we rely heavily on member word of mouth. Many new members have joined the Club in the last two years.

Are You A Promoter?

Those new members bring their friends and family to the Club to enjoy the facilities, and ultimately some of those visitors will choose to become members too. New members are crucial to building a robust and healthy club. The NPS goes deeper than traditional satisfaction question because it also gauges loyalty. In theory, we’d rather have dissatisfied, loyal members than satisfied, disloyal members. It sounds odd, but when you are not loyal to a brand and have a poor experience, oftentimes that is your last visit to that entity whereas if you are loyal to a brand or organization and have a poor experience, you are more likely to tell someone with the organization about it and help them correct it for future clients and experiences. So, are you a Net Promoter, loyal and willing to recommend us? Great! Keep the communication lines going and help us build a better club!

SPYC Junior Sailing Update by Todd Fedyszyn, Youth Sailing Director

T

he SPYC Junior Sailing Team has been hard at work racing around the state of Florida and beyond. With the schedule filling up fast with new and re-scheduled events, it is shaping up to be a very busy winter for all of our SPYC Racing Fleets. Over the October Columbus Day long weekend our qualified SPYC Laser Sailors travelled to Camp Seagull in North Carolina to compete in the US Sailing Youth Championships. Guthrie Braun sailed a strong event finishing 2nd overall in the Laser Full Rig Fleet. Guthrie was followed by Ethan Danielson in 4th overall. In the Laser Radial Fleet SPYC’s Kate Danielson finished as the 2nd Female Overall. On the Nacra course, SPYC’s Dorothy Mendelblatt and Ian Iles finished a strong 3rd Overall in their first Youth Champs as a team. Ian was also awarded the Sportsmanship Award. Also competing for SPYC were Sidney Moyer, Preston Weaver, and Callen Burnett.

Our top performer in the 150 boat Opti RWB Fleet was John Hartney in 4th Place Overall and 1st in Blue Fleet. Also competing for SPYC were Gloria Privis, Ryder Ellis, Maija Andert, Chris Shaffer, Anna Andert, Talon Schenk, Thomas Weidner and Jad Aberdrabbo. Our SPYC Green Fleet sailors travelled to the Clearwater Green Fleet Regatta over the weekend of October 30th-31st to compete in their 2nd event of the fall season. All sailors showed that they are making excellent forward progress with improved results and a better understanding of the race course. Our top performer was Zach Ostman in 5th Overall. Also competing were Weston Bowie, Smith Nelson, Everett Perkins, Maya Tsantiris, Adeline Dozark, Leo Pallante, Tucker Gowens, and Liam McFadden.

Over the same weekend our SPYC Opti RWB Team travelled to Charleston, SC to compete in the USODA SE Championships hosted at the Hobcaw YC. Sailors were greeted by 8-12 knots of wind and probably the strongest current many have ever seen. SMOOTH SAILING | DECEMBER 2021

he 50th Sunfish World Championship took place in Sarasota, Florida Oct 23rd29th. SPYC congratulates, PC David Mendelblatt, finishing as the Top Master World Sunfish Champion! He placed 5th overall in the 100-boat fleet.

SPYC hosted the Fall Foil Racing Regatta Nov 5th-7th. The Beach Club was "regatta central" for 3 days as 47 competitors from 4 countries and 10 states were represented sailing Hydrofoil Kites, iQFOils and Wingfoils; a new foiling class. Friday afternoon was a social hour in the Club. Racing was held Saturday and Sunday in the Gulf of Mexico off Pass-aGrille Beach. We saw NNW breeze with an avg of 16-18k. Each fleet completed 12 races. Salty Sister, Gina Bowden Pierce, was Race Officer on the Wingfoil Course. A historical first for SPYC as we have never done a Wingfoil race. Donna Sue Marks was RO for the Hydrofoil Kite course. The Hydrofoil Kites had 25 competitors on the line in both A&B Divisions. In A Division a previous SPYC Jr Sailor, Zack Marks, finished 3rd and SPYC member, Kevin Reali, finished sixth. The Wingfoil

HISTORY ON THE REVEALED WATER 11

This month we have moved through the front Lobby towards the Heritage Lounge. To the left of the Heritage entrance is a huge see-through trophy case which houses a beautiful large marble based trophy topped with a huge blue and crystal globe…. Please read on! This lovely specimen is the Darlene Clark Spirit of Competition Award and was donated by the Clark family in 1996 in memory of their mother, Darlene Clark, who was a staunch supporter of women’s sailing.

DARLENE CLARK

An excellent sailor, she was a member of the Salty Sisters [Captain in 1979] and participated in every aspect of the sailing game. In addition to her sailing accomplishments, she served on various race committees as well—honorary Vice Commodore of the Thistle Class; chief recorder on the A-Team at the 1996 summer Olympics in Savannah… “She was vivacious, dynamic and always there for everyone.”

“Darlene’s spirit lives through the trophy named after her—her pursuit of excellence in race management and sportsmanship with integrity.”

DARLENE CLARK SPIRIT OF COMPETITION AWARD

Since 1996, the trophy has been awarded during the Darlene Clark Challenge [formerly known as the SPYC Bikini Cup] which was part of the Suncoast Women’s Sailing Championship. The first recipient was Maridell Weaver. It has been awarded since then until 2009—Brooke Taliaferro was the recipient. Noteworthy fact: well-known local glass artist Chuck Boux created the trophy along with 5 little glass world keeper trophies! BROOKE TALIAFERRO LAST RECIPIENT — 2009

SPYC POKER RUN RECAP! by Alex Deininger

T

hank you to everyone that participated in the 2021 Downtown SPYC Poker Run! We had an incredible turnout, with 26 registered boats and over 160 participants. The Poker Run is a SPYC tradition, and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters of our Club. Participants meet at the Club docks and show off our well-curated boat themes and Captains receive a nautical map that charts their path of adventure for the day. This year's map guided participants to four impressively decorated waterfront homes, our very own Snell Isle Marina, as well as SPYC member, Jon LaBudde's, Big Catch Waterfront Restaurant. We would also like to personally thank Richard & Ada Winning, Billy & Juliet Auer, Rob & Micki Siviter, Bekah Rush, and Andrew Smith for hosting their docks! All boats are tasked with visiting the docks in the allotted time to collect tokens. Upon returning to the

Club, each participant turns in their tokens for poker cards to play a 5-Card Poker hand. Prizes are awarded for the Best Poker Hand, Best Boat Theme, and Best Decorated Dock. This year's winners were: • Best Poker Hand: Chris Collins (not pictured here) • Best Decorated Dock: Bekah Rush (Gilligan's Island Theme) • Best Decorated Boat: Dan "You Scratched My Anchor!" Spaldingo & Co. (Toga Party) We look forward to seeing you all again at the next Poker Run, which will be hosted at the Pass-a-Grille Club Spring 2022...Spots will be limited, so please make sure to sign up early!

2021 TED IRWIN MEMORIAL/FALL BAY REGATTA by Selga Sakss, Event Chair

T

he Ted Irwin Memorial/Fall Bay Regatta took place Saturday, October 9th with 20 competitors participating in Spinnaker, Racer Cruiser, and Cruising divisions. There was just enough steady wind for the Racer-Cruiser and Cruising boats to complete their “around the government marks” distance courses without the need to shorten. The Spinnaker fleet finished two of three scheduled windward/ leeward races before a major wind shift late in the day.

The Hammill-Jones Perpetual Trophy for Cruising division was awarded to Cayennita 111, skippered by Douglas Jones. The Ted Irwin Memorial Trophy for Spinnaker division was awarded to Breezin Bayou, skippered by Stephen Mitcham.

The after race party, held in the Regatta room, was filled to capacity with sailors and race committee members enjoying some great food and complimentary beer. It felt like the good old pre-pandemic days!

Cayennita 111

Breezin Bayou

Ted Irwin’s daughter, Michelle Payne, has been an integral part of this regatta for many years and presented the division awards as well as the perpetual trophies. She shared some great history about Ted’s sailing career, his successful endeavor as a designer of the Irwin Yachts and the family’s resolution to establish the Ted Irwin Memorial Trophy.

DECEMBER 2021 | SMOOTH SAILING

CRUISING

FLEET

25

by Kevin Cross, Fleet Captain

Welcome Aboard!!! …

T

his past month has been very eventful for the Cruisers. The Fleet returned to Galati’s Yacht Basin on Anna Maria Island for the first time in two years. Port Directors Charlotte & Ray Noyes expertly changed plans when high winds caused a one-day shift in our itinerary. Twenty-four cruisers enjoyed Port Directors: Charlotte & Ray Noyes “docktails” and dinners at the Beach House in Bradenton Beach and the Ocean Star Restaurant. Daytime activities included golf carting, bicycling, shopping, and socializing dockside. The weather turned out to be gorgeous for the duration of our stay.

November events began with our monthly meeting and Barbara Watson, prior SPYC historian, sharing insights into our Club’s history and the famed Havana Race. Barbara reminded us that, as cartographer George Gauld noted in 1765, St Petersburg really is “A pretty good place for a Settlement”. Next, the Cruising Fleet participated in the “Blessing of the Fleet” with over 20 boats blessed by Reverend Peete aboard Commodore Bill Waters’ vessel “Bimawich”. The Fleet gathered again at the downtown docks for the Commodore’s Ball weekend. Pam & Allen Thomas and Debbie & Kevin Hopper organized activities for these weekends providing more opportunities for cruising friends to gather and enjoy our home port.

First Prize went to Corrine St. Jean costumed as a Florida Witch Riding a Stick … a palmetto frond decorated!

SALTY 26

SISTERS by Carol Hansen

C

o-Captain Dee Gill announced that on October 20th, the Salties completed the annual Misfit and Chile races. Coming in first place in the Misfits was Past Captain Gina BowdenPierce, Angela Treinen Gina & Angela in second, and Jennifer Anderson in third. For the Chile, Joanne Simmons was the big winner with Past Captain Carol Hansen coming in second. On October 29th, the Salty Sisters held their annual Halloween Party!! There were over 50 ghosts, witches, and

other zombies in attendance. Gail Falkingham (Lola a witch zombie), Kathy Mansir (Frances, a zombie artist from France), and their Haunted House in the Quarterdeck Room decorating team (Vicki Posner, Tricia Billings & Nita George) did a magnificent job transforming the “former Quarterdeck Room” into our very own haunted house! Our serving staff served as judges for the costume contest. The costume winners were: • First place – Past Captain Vicki Posner, a very "creative" zombie. • Second place – Valerie Massingill, a masked zombie witch...of few words. • Third place – Past Captain Kathy Ahern, a zombie nurse who previously cared for “Lola’s” broken heart. Our new class of 2021 started their training/education on September 29th. We want to welcome: Tish Bowden, Bijie Ding, Sandy Merrifield, Jennifer O’Neill, Audrey Orgo, Mollie Raymond, KT Trudeau, and Rhonda Whitehead. Past Captain Selga Sakss is coordinating with several other Salty instructors to prepare them for an exciting new adventure as a Salty Sister!!

BROAD

REACHERS by Carol Hansen

2:00 p.m. As each sailor came to the dock, boat handlers were available to assist the sailors and their gear to the next boat. Congratulations to Cathy McNally, Lisa Erhart, Lisa Erhart (Luffing Lassies) Sue Davidson who won the regatta, Cathy McNally (Bow Chasers) placed second, and Salty Sister Sue Davidson came in third.

n October 15th, the 49th running of the Commodore Lucas Invitational Regatta was held on a spectacular blue-sky day in mid-October at Pass-a-Grille; 16 sailors raced in 14 Prams. The The Start Line competition consisted of six races with each sailor having a ‘bye’ where they sat out a race. As each race was completed, the sailors came into the dock and were then assigned a different boat for the next race so no one sailor had an advantage with the boat assigned. All nine FWSA clubs were represented at the Lucas Cup regatta. Racing started a little before 10:00 am and ran continuously through

Thanks to ALL the Broad Reacher volunteers who helped make this event a success. Gloria Davis, Barbara Goodman, Tricia Lucas Cup Sailors Billings, Katie Rodgers, Tish Bowden, Marti Cochran, Anne O’Dell, Joanne Simmons, Juliette Clark, Mary McCarthy, Terri McGough, Charl Hadfield, and husbands Paul Goodman & Gene McCarthy. The Broad Reachers invite and encourage women members of SPYC to join us at Pass-aGrille on Saturday mornings, as we sail for fun and work on our sailing/racing skills. Let’s Rally and Roll!!!…

In October, a few of us joined other FCYC RV Land Cruisers at a gathering in Naples Florida. The Pelican Lake Motorcoach Resort was just that…a resort!

The group had a fabulous lunch at Naples Sailing & Yacht Club, and a wonderful happy hour and dinner at Marco Island Yacht Club. What a great way to meet other FCYC members and an opportunity to visit their clubs. And Pelican Lake is a fantastic location if you are planning to attend the FCYC meeting in May which is being hosted by Marco Island Yacht Club. To join the group and keep up with our events where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik at SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com.

Consider joining us for these upcoming events: Pelican Lake Motorcoach Resort

n October 28th the Wing Shooters Society hosted the St. Petersburg Ducks Unlimited Banquet. The banquet raises funds to support the Ducks Unlimited wetland conservation program. To date, 15 million acres have been conserved in North America, 61 thousand acres in Florida. Nationally, Ducks Unlimited raised $230 million last year and since 1937, the year Ducks Unlimited was founded, $5.4 billion. A ticket drawing for 100's of you-pick-it items, silent auctions, and live auctions were held for the 140 plus participants. Twenty Wing Shooters attended. The two Wing Shooters arriving too late for the picture are, John Arsenault and Ed Wilson. Thanks to Dave Miller for coordinating this year's banquet and all the volunteers who stepped up to help run the banquet.

ff to the Beach we went to enjoy a spectacular day of golf at the Isla del Sol Yacht and Country Club on October 17th. This month we had our outing on a Sunday afternoon and were graciously hosted by Patti and Dave Gabri. Thanks to Fred Curtis, Director of Golf from Isla who spoke at our October meeting with a lively informative presentation. Be sure to sign-up for our annual Holiday Party on December 7th and plan for another “Twelve Days of Christmas” singing tables! All golfers gain points during the year by their attendance at meetings and outings, coming in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, closest to the pins, and closest to the line during the year.

The more a player participates, or wins, points are accumulated. Anyone can be a winner and the rule is that a player can only be given this award once. Guests are encouraged to attend the party and there promises to be a visit from our Florida Santa.
