CHAPTER 8 2
COMMODORE’S LOG
W
elcome to the July-August Issue of Smooth Sailing! The pass crabs are jamin’ and the tarpon are slammin’. Summer Solstice was less than two weeks ago, and we’re just getting started — at least those of you who have not bailed out to the mountains where the nights can still hit the 50’s. We true Floridians know how to relish the summer season by doubling down into a tropical frame of mind. For starters, we can look forward to the Grand Opening of the Pass-aGrille Beach Club pool. As I write this, the pool is nearly complete and holding water. The project has attained the look of a resort, just waiting for salty boaters and land lubbers alike. Past Commodore Joe Klingel has been tireless in shepherding this project, and it shows. I am happy to report that PAG will be open seven days a week during the main clubhouse Annual Shutdown, which is scheduled to occur July 15th through July 29th, and reopening July 30th. The pool had a soft opening in June while management and staff got their feet wet. Grand Opening is scheduled for Saturday, July 6th and will be a bash to remember! Last but not least, we have a winner!!! As you may recall, I have been running a contest to see who could locate the Island Crossover sign. I have a great story to tell about a father and his two sons who decided to take on this quest, with failure being no option. For starters, I can tell you that the sign in question is located on Shell Key. But, as it turns out, there are actually two identical signs on Shell Key! So the father and his two sons ventured out on this quest and entered the cut into Shell Key made by Hurricane Irma, now known as “Irma Pass.” Upon entering Irma Pass, they followed the swash channel north and found the sign shown in the picture above. As you can see, the crew members were pretty happy with their find, only to learn later that evening they had located the wrong sign!
As in real life, setbacks can be a learning experience. Undaunted, they came back in kayaks a week or so later to continue their quest. Unfortunately, Mother Nature was not cooperating that day and the west wind prohibited their approach. Undeterred, our bold contestants returned the next opportunity the father’s busy calendar permitted in their skiff, entering through Irma Pass heading south. At this point I must confess to you that the sign in question, which has been there for decades, is now completely surrounded by mangroves and invisible from the water. Nonetheless, defeat is not a word in the dictionary of these unrelenting pilgrims. If you would like to see what success looks like, please refer to the picture above. Congratulations to Rear Commodore David Mendelblatt and his twin sons, Adam and Reed, who found the twin signs! Many of our members know what a great competitor David is, and from the look on his son’s faces, it is obvious they are well tracking in their father’s footsteps. This turned out to be a great learning experience for these two boys which will be remembered for the rest of their lives, and I am gratified to have had a small hand it in. Congratulations to their mother, Amy, for bearing and raising these two fine sons. Honorable mention goes to Bob and Trisha Birkenstock, who participated by utilizing memory and reference materials. I have included a chart of the area with pins marking the waypoints submitted. One of the Birkenstocks’ submissions was the northernmost pin, which matched the spot where Team Mendelblatt found the wrong sign, which I did not know existed until I saw David’s picture. The next pin south is the winner. Thanks to all who participated! Have a great summer and remember the sunscreen.

T
he 41st Annual Suncoast Race Week was held April 12th-14th, with Friday’s start at Marker G3 just east of Whitted Airport. Light winds and a strong incoming current tested competitors’ skills and patience. Once the fleet got through the Skyway Bridge, a freshening sea breeze allowed for better sailing conditions around the remaining course with a finish at Marker 2 at the mouth of the Manatee River. While Saturday had better winds for the fleets to sail their designated courses, Sunday was the absolute best day for the race from Bradenton back to St. Petersburg; with a steady wind of 13+/- kn gusting to 18 and 20 kn at the start in the vicinity of Marker 2. The winds held a steady 15 kn at the finish line in the vicinity of Pinellas 1. The Spinnaker and Racer-Cruiser fleet sailed a 14 nm course and the Cruising fleet a 9.8 nm course. The first Spinnaker boat finished in

one hour and 11 minutes and the first Cruising boat at one hour and 16 minutes. The entire fleet finished in less than two hours! First overall in Spinnaker fleet - SPYC skipper Michael Siedlecki and crew sailing Tack Tick. 2nd place - Jody Abrams and crew aboard Arista in the Spinnaker A division. 3rd place, Harvey Ford/Tom Mistele and Silver Surfer crew in the Spinnaker B division. First overall in the Racer-Cruiser fleet was Ron Kinney and crew Holanda Manzano sailing Mi Sueno for SPYC. Also competing were Grant Dumas on Warrior, Meg Gimmi crewing on Pigs with No Purpose, and Tom Glew with his crew aboard XTC. Well done SPYC sailors! Thank You to PRO George Pennington and his RC crew Beth Pennington, Gloria Davis, and Selga Sakss. of sailable wind, the race was postponed until the “rain date” (aka “no wind date”) on Sunday. The dinner, held Saturday evening, was well attended and everyone enjoyed the Pusser’s Rum Painkillers! Sunday had better winds and the fleet sailed a 14nm course. Unfortunately, the winds did not hold and the course was shortened. Taking a first overall in Spinnaker Fleet was Grant Dumas and crew aboard Warrior. SPYC skippers and crew were well represented with Michael Siedlecki and crew on Tack Tick taking 2nd place in Spinnaker A, and Holanda Manzano crewing on Ron Kinney’s Mi Sueno, placing 2nd in the Racer Cruiser fleet. Also competing in the Spinnaker division were Jody Abrams skippering Arista and Meg Gimmi crewing on Pigs with No Purpose. Thank you to PRO George Pennington and his race committee crew Beth Pennington, Barbara Shaffer and Tom Wheatley for another successful regatta! The overall results are available on the SPYC website under Regattas and then Yacht Scoring results. SMOOTH SAILING | JULY & AUGUST 2019

y Memorial Day, most of the Fleet returned from our annual two-week Commodore’s Cruise (May 9-25) where we were “freestyle cruising” along the Florida coastline. We did some of the usual (rides on bikes, dinghys, and trolleys), and of course some shopping, great dinners, with opportunities for some specialty libations, and an interactive ghost tour!! While some boaters trips may have been interrupted by a few mishaps (i.e. malfunctioning heads, blown generators, misguided steering, overheated engine, loss of A/C), the weather certainly cooperated with fabulousness, and the boating comradery was great as ever. We made more friends, and gained only a few more pounds. We even won attendance awards at the May FCYC Meeting in Marathon (see the FCYC article). Thanks to everyone for all the great memories, and special thanks to the Port Directors who made it all happen: • Angela & Brian Kowalik – Kickoff & Marathon Yacht Club • Barbara & Heber Weller, Richard & Judi Phagan – Marina Jack (Sarasota) • Ed & Isabella Hanna – Venice Area & St. Charles Yacht Club • Steve & Charlotte Miller, Jan & Mike Fitz – Pink Shell (Ft. You don’t want to miss this reprise. We will also begin sign-up for our September Cruise to Twin Dolphin (9/27-9/29). Race results as follows: Grandmother: 1st - Debbie Walcutt, 2nd - Jill Bridges, and 3rd - Mary Moosbrugger. Notta Momma: 1st - Marti Cochran, 2nd - Vanessa Beckman, and 3rd Carol Hansen. Other Grandmother: Rosemary Sherman 1st, Iris Mastry 2nd, and Dee Schwartz 3rd. Captain Connie Beckman & Co-Captain Kathy Ahern presented each 1st place winner with their trophies. The following week, the winds abandoned us. Els Wiemken, with some excellent tips from Cameron Smith of the Sailing Center staff, gave us a lesson on rigging 420s. Later, a few of the Salties launched one of the 420s and got a feel for getting on and off. We even sailed/floated around a while.

Some like it Hot”, so our Golf Group of 21 braved the first blast of summer heat at University Park Country Club in Sarasota, on Tuesday May 21st. First Place honors went to Mike McDonough, Gina BowdenPierce, Larry Heinkel, and Karen Liberman. Could it have been because of Larry’s flamingo print golf shorts that they spoofed the competition? Closest to the pin winners on the Par 3’s were Joe Hartman, Mike McDonough, Tom Ritschel, Dick Vazzano, and Bill Protz. Nydia Ballesteros had the straightest Drive. On Tuesday, June 4th we were homebound for a beginning tee time of 7:52 am, at our neighborhood Mangrove Bay Golf Course, with 20 players. Closest to the pin was won by
John Arsenault, and he submitted a photo to prove it! First Place was had by Steve Deininger, Rosemary Sherman, and Tom Ritschel. We will continue to have golf outings but no monthly meetings until October, with a possible stop at Top Golf for some “group bonding” in August.

ur end-of-season Caribbean Luau party was soooooooo much fun! Tommy “Bahama” Arnold provided the entertainment. We had an awesome Caribbean buffet and the 2019 – 2020 LBC board was installed. The Best Reason Not To Go North For The Summer is Mah Jongg at the Beach! Every Monday, rain or shine (even holidays), we meet at the Pass-a-Grille location to play Mah Jongg. This year LBC members honing their Mah Jongg skills the PAG clubhouse will not close down for two weeks - that means uninterrupted fun!
Currently the LBC Board is planning programs and activities for the 2019 – 2020 program season. We meet September through May on the 3rd Monday to be entertained by authors, actors, and other notables at 11:00 am followed by, you guessed it, Mah Jongg at 1:00 pm. You don’t need to be a Mah Jongg player to join the LBC, although 55 – 60% of our members play. If you want to learn we’ll teach you. The LBC is all about having fun so come join us!! Membership forms are available at SPYC.org. Call or email Membership Chairwoman, Cheryl Lanfear, 512-264-5542 or mclanfear@yahoo.com to join or renew. It’s $30.00 annually and worth every penny!

K
en Ernst owns an interesting story. As a sprinter from Long Island, he landed a track scholarship at Alabama. Way back then, everybody at Alabama was in the ROTC program. He graduated, went to the Air Force and earned his wings in 1961. After a combat tour in Vietnam he hired on as a pilot with United Airlines. In 1977, when he was a supervisor, United hired their first female pilots and assigned all seven of them to Ken. After 32 years with United he retired and moved to Florida.
Ken Ernst Ken says, “While everybody strives to be bigger, better or faster, my motto has always been just do the best you can.” To this end Ken tells great jokes at our monthly meetings. Like most Wing Shooters he owns a few shotguns. Because of a neck issue he shoots a modified Beretta A400 semi-automatic. It has almost no recoil.
There’s truth to Ken’s “do your best” motto. Remember those seven green female pilots put on his watch? He says they were great to work with, much better than swollen-head-male pilots. So how did they do? One of the seven is now a 747 captain. You can’t do much better than that!
The Wing Shooters Society meets monthly on the 2nd Thursday at 6:00 pm. Those wishing to join are encouraged to contact our Grand Marshal Gene Collins at 727-385-4878 or genebcollins@hotmail.com.

BROAD REACHERS by Marti Cochran
O
n April 13th, the Broad Reachers honored women who helped build the club in its early years by holding a special “Vintage Broads” luncheon, in connection with our Annual Meeting at the Beach Club. Guests included Louise Houser, a charter member in 1971. Nita George regaled the audience with stories of the club’s rich history of fun-loving sailors. Thanks to Betty Hurley, the program featured photos from the Broad Reachers scrapbooks, currently housed at the Pass-A-Grille History Museum. The Broad Reachers also elected officers for 2019-20: Captain Gwen Mann; Sailing Captain Charl Hadfield; Secretary Heather LaLanne; Treasurer Carol Hansen; and Interclub Captain Debbie Walcutt, with Angela Treinen as FWSA Second Delegate and Mary Moosbrugger as Alternate Delegate. On May 18, the Broad Reachers hosted the annual Nona Bolster race, held in honor of its namesake, Nona, who was a former Captain and who sailed for many years as a Broad Reacher. She
