CHAPTER FIVE 2
COMMODORE’S LOG D
ear SPYC Members, March is here and our sailing season is getting busier. Half-way around the world, the 36th America’s Cup Finals are about to begin. The boats being used are capable of incredible speeds. Come watch the racing at the Tiki Bar starting March 5th at 9:30 pm. I hope the excitement from the event will stimulate us to get out and race. Speaking of yacht racing, SPYC is recognized around the world for running excellent regattas. We stay on the cutting edge of race management with events featuring sport boats, off shore distance races, team racing and foiling classes. We are proud to have our own Club volunteers and staff who enable us to host high-level regattas. Our diverse, busy schedule includes local, regional, state, national, continental, and world championship events. It is for good reason that the US Sailing SPYC Trophy for Exceptional Regatta Management is named for our Club. We have won it so many times it would be unfair not to share. Many other clubs need to recruit volunteers from SPYC to host regattas. It is because of the great culture of leadership from tireless workers, such as P/C Pat Seidenspinner that this is the case. It is important that we remember our roots and continue this proud tradition. The immediate concern for the future is running safe, fun regattas at the high level every competitor expects. We are continuing to work diligently to run events, while adhering to our Covid guidelines. Here are some other things to look for around the Club: • SPYC’s “Wheel of Deals” continues in the month of March. To catch the Deal of the DAY! tune in to our official Facebook and Instagram platforms every Wednesday and Saturday. • Join us at the downtown clubhouse Tiki Hut for the 36th America’s Cup Viewing Party. See page 11 for dates and complete details. • Easter is around the corner. We hope to see you at the Club this year as Chef Joseph has whipped up for us some wonderful Easter

Sunday a la carte specials, including a Prix-Fixe Dinner which you can make reservations for. Or, if you prefer to celebrate at home we will be offering “Easter Sunday To-Go”. ON ONTHE THEWATER WATER 5
There is a lovely expressionist print of a racing yacht in the downstairs hallway near the stairs and opposite the Salty Sister niche which many of you have passed hundreds of times. What exactly is it ? The mystery has been revealed. Please read on! July 24-26, 1998, John & Ginger Hanner were part of a SPYC contingency headed to Newport, Rhode Island, to participate in one of the fundraising campaigns for Skipper Ed Baird and his Team Young America** training there during the summer for the 2000 America’s Cup Campaign. The team’s sponsor was the New York Y.C. , but SPYC had a significant contributing interest as well. Sponsors such as PC Bill & Hazel Hough, PC Bill & Marian Ballard, PC Skipp & Joyce Fraser, PC Don & Ginny Bogue, John & Ginger Hanner in Newport. Jim & Linda Castle, Carl & Kathi Hall, PC Rich & Char-Nel Doyle, Ken & Barbara Cowan, Richard & Julie Priestley, Steve & Debbie Lang, Gloria Lewallen, Nancy Vildibill, PC Bill & Sherry Welch, Ardith Rutland, Lon & Jill Compton, Joe & Aila McEwen… to name a few.
Neiman Print 1964 America’s Cup Challenge
That Summer weekend, the Hanners recall being shuttled out to Block Island Sound on 41 ft. R.I.B. inflatables to watch the racing and have the opportunity to hitch a ride on one of the Cup Class boats – Young America USA36 and Spirit of Rhode Island USA39. Ed Baird: “We had several yacht clubs, from around the US, who were involved and each had multiple donors who came to sail with us in Newport. With two boats, we often spilt guests between the teams for the day, and some days shuttled guests on and off the boats to allow for more people to enjoy the experience. I always tried to give them some time on the helm (John was one of those people), which helped them understand the loads on the boat and how sensitive they were to helm and sail adjustments. Any sailor was decidedly impressed. In fact, even the leader of the Blue Angels thanked us by saying it was the coolest day of his life!”
It was during one of the many Newport fund-raising events, that John & Ginger Hanner purchased the Leroy Neiman* print of the 1964 America’s Cup you now see hanging in the main hall to the North side of the stairs. We whole heartedly thank the Hanners for their generous donation to the Club! * * *
July 1998 Lobster Dinner in Newport L-R: John & Ginger Hanner; Chris Fraser, PC Don Bogue; PC Skipp Fraser
* LeRoy Neiman’s painting of the 1964 American’s Cup is a silkscreen print on an original NOAA oceanic map titled Martha's vineyard to Block Island. [The 1964 America’s Cup was held September at Newport, Rhode Island. US defender from the New York YC, Constellation, defeated the British challenger from the Royal Thames YC, Sovereign, 4 races to zero.]
* * * **In 2000, Team Young America went on to sail Young America USA53 in the 30th America’s Cup yacht race. However, during one of the trials, they broke the boat in half and never recovered, not making the semi-finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup in Auckland, New Zealand.]

YACHTING INFORMATION
COMMITTEE S
PYC hosted a Winter Foil Racing Regatta on January 30th & 31st this year. This came on the heels of our Fall Foil Racing Regatta held in November. Why another one so quickly? Tampa Bay is a location for the US Sailing’s Olympic Development Program leading up to the 2024 Paris and 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. US Sailing has launched a new racing and training series of Olympic class regattas to be held annually in Florida and California. SPYC seized the opportunity to create a regatta for the Foiling Formula Kites the weekend before they were to compete in Clearwater at the West Marine US Open Sailing Series on February 4th - 7th. Most competitors were in town and it gave our regional competitors an opportunity to sail against World Champions and future Olympians. We had 19 Foiling Kite competitors. Depending on the breeze direction our versatile venue allows sailing in both the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. On Saturday, the racers saw ESE 6-8 knot breezes kiting off the Skyway and got three races in before the breeze faded. A Southern Sideshore 12-14 knots breeze greeted the racers
Youngest Race Committee Volunteer! Meet Ronan, son of SPYC members Aaron & Vanessa McClearnon offering his volunteer services at the Winter Foil Racing Regatta! (Very adorable!!)
on Sunday, we completed five competitive races in the Gulf of Mexico off Pass a Grille Beach. Markus Edegran and Evan Heffernan were board to board for first and second place in each race. Edegran took home 1st Place while Heffernan was 2 pts behind in 2nd Place and Daniela Moroz ,our Top Female and 4x IKA Formula Kite Class World Champion and 2x Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, was 3rd. SPYC Member Kevin Reali was 7th. Our kiters hailed from Florida, California, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Turkey, Greece, Texas, and New York. The event was staged at our Beach Club in Pass-a-Grille. Thank you to our PAG staff, Elite Watersports Sponsor and the Race Committee volunteers. The volunteers proved again that they have what it takes to offer high performance race management
YACHTING RECOGNITION 2020 AWARDS
Please check the website for additional photos, and keep a lookout for updates and links to the innovative virtual celebration of our 2020 Nominees! MARCH 2021 | SMOOTH SAILING
The annual YR Awards Celebration is yet another victim of the devastating Coronavirus. In lieu of this event, we will be using different formats in the upcoming months to recognize 2020 recipients of Yachting Recognition for their accomplishments, performance, and service to our sailing community. The Proclamation – a complete listing of these individuals – is published in this issue of Smooth Sailing and is on display in the lobby annex along with a program-like pamphlet detailing each recipient.

JAMIE LORD FEBRUARY EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH Congratulations to, Jamie Lord, for being voted as SPYC’s Employee of the Month for February 2021! Jamie has been a member of the Yacht Club staff for one year, however, has made a huge impact in such a short amount of time. Although the Banquet operations have virtually ceased to exist since the pandemic began, she has willingly taken on other tasks outside of her position and leant a hand wherever needed. As the Assistant Catering Manager, Jamie assists with planning banquet events and helps oversee the execution of them as well. She is very creative with projects that she has tackled and has become our main person for menu design. She hails from Hershey, PA, but has taken to the Florida lifestyle beautifully, becoming an integral part of the team. We are so proud to have Jamie here! Help us in congratulating her on earning this well deserved title. Thank you, Jamie, for a job well done!
Anchor’s Aweigh with Anne & Andy ~ OH NO!! No Winners for the February Game We are sad to report that the February Anne & Andy game did not claim any winners. In many ways sporting clays is like golf. You can ride around in converted golf carts. They’ve changed the bag part of the golf cart to a second bench seat. If you have 3 friends, you can all ride together. Or you can walk. The pull carts look more like push strollers. There’s plenty of space for two shotguns and two hundred shells. Four shotguns and 400 shells would be pushing it. We keep score on a similar looking card. A good shotgun costs about the same as a good set of clubs. Some targets are easy, some are near impossible. The easy or impossible refer to a particular station, the equivalent of a hole, or it could be the whole course. Easy stations have slow flying targets. The really easy targets fly straight at you or straight away. Think along the lines of miniature golf. It’s not unusual for the first timer to nail a couple of these. The impossible stations can be evident or deceiving. You might concede before even attempting a shot or later proclaim it’s a lot harder than it looks. That’s the safe excuse unless the next two guys don’t miss. There are charity shooting events too. A smooth swing of your gun when chasing a target is a good thing. When getting ready many shooters check their grip, shuffle their feet, and take a warm up swing. While there’s no standard, the sporting clay courses are designated by colors. If the course is new to you, you need to ask. The blue course is not always the easy course. A bad shotgun cost about the same as a bad set of clubs. It’s not a good idea to make excuses. The guy who says “I’m having trouble seeing them” will likely hear “You’re having trouble hitting them too.” Advice is often offered even when it is not welcome. Like golf, camaraderie is an endearing aspect of shooting sports. It’s something most shooters do with friends. Shots both good and bad will be acknowledged. Cutting quips, snappy retorts and that painful quiet sympathy on a bad day are to be expected.

In many ways it’s not. On your shooting score card, a low number is not something to boast about. You count the hits not the shots. Skills acquired on the sporting clays course have other applications. The obvious is game hunting. What’s the analogy in golf? Handicaps are based on the type of gun you use. There’s no handicap for being a lousy shooter. A high quality shotgun will last more than a lifetime. Golf clubs? I don’t think so. You only get one shot out of a shotgun shell. Advantage golf. Have you ever seen an old cherished driver displayed above the fireplace? Your beloved black Labrador does not get crazy happy when you pull out the golf clubs. Shooters never waste time looking for a bad shot that went into the woods. Advantage sporting clays. The emphatic fore is not something a shooter worries about. Nobody keeps their clubs in a humidity controlled safe. When getting ready to shoot, nobody waggles their butt. When the group ahead of you is slow, it’s okay to jump past them to the next station. Sometimes your shot is supposed to be into the woods. Sporting clays courses do not sell beer out on the course or at the club house. After a really bad shot, I have never heard of a shotgun getting bent in half or landing in the pond. When asked what was the most important aspect of designing a golf course, noted golfer and course architect Don January said “Make sure No. 18 ends up back at the club house.” The sporting clays course designers have not figured that one out yet. irst year of RVing - let’s take a look back. We got our RV in February 2020, and even with COVID, once we got rolling, we managed to put on over 15,000 miles, visiting all the of the southeast states (12 of them), from Florida up to Virginia and out west to Oklahoma and Texas and all the states inbetween (FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, TN, AL, MS, AR, LA, OK, TX). With repeat trips to the Carolinas and Texas, and 4 trips back to the “mother ship” for warranty rejuvenation, we have seen some beautiful sights, and some quirky things
Angela & Brian Kowalik visit the “mother ship” at Red Bay, Alabama
that make travel interesting. For us, it’s more about the journey than the destination (what will be around the next bend?) and enjoying the varying landscapes. Our favorite RV parks are those around the water, such as Core of Engineer parks, and state parks, and then resorts with cement pads when we feel like “glamping”. It’s been a whirlwind, and there’s so much more to see! We travelled along scenic byways and highways (like Historic Route 66, Natchez Trace, and Blue Ridge Parkway), and enjoyed luscious forests, beautiful lakes,
Sunrise in Palo Duro Canyon
and a few wineries. We visited Palo Duro Canyon (2nd largest canyon in the US), where it was so dark we saw more stars at night than we thought were possible, Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge (in OK) with their bison and longhorns, and Great Smokey Mountain National Park & Forest. We even met up with friends on multiple separate occasions.
Goat Tower at Hampton Roads Winer, Virginia
As part of our new RV adventure, we purchased many “accessories”, got a fuel card and Lifetime National Park Pass, and joined FMCA and Harvest Hosts (which allows you to “boondock” at various wineries, breweries, farms, attractions, and golf courses). We are looking RV Essential: a table for your beverages forward to continuing our journey, and hearing about trips from other RVers when we get together.
To join the group and keep up with our events where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik at koalafam@tampabay.rr.com ~ Looking forward to seeing you around the next bend! SMOOTH SAILING | MARCH 2021

he weather finally has cooperated and warmed up for our weekly rides. It happened just in time for me to get back in the saddle after missing the past 12 weeks while I was recovering from rotator cuff surgery. I joined up with a couple riders who wanted to do a ride North and East that included a circumnavigation of the Green Swamp Wilderness area. We started at our usual spot for rides going North, at the Cracker Barrel parking lot on 54th Ave North. We headed north on I-275 to I-4 East to Lakeland, where we picked up US RT 98 N. From there we took Rock Ridge Road to Greenpond Rd, which took us to FL RT 33 (Commonwealth Ave). From Commonwealth, our route included Lake Erie Rd, Bay Lake Rd to Bay Lake Loop and
then back on Bay Lake Road. Eventually we made it to FL RT 50 E; which took us into Groveland. Once in Groveland we continued to James Barbeque, where we planned for lunch; upon arriving we found the place permanently closed and the building for lease. We wound up eating at Krispy’s Fried Chicken, outside in the shade under a row of trees. After lunch we made a quick fuel stop then started our journey back toward St. Petersburg. After getting on FL RT 50, we turned onto FL RT 471, which we rode until we reached US RT 98. US RT 98 took us to CR RT 54, where a L turn led us to Chaucey Road. Another L on Chaucey Road quickly brought us to Morris Bridge Road. Here we made a 3rd straight L turn and stayed on Morris Bridge until we arrived at Fletcher Road. We then took Fletcher Road to I-275 South back to St. Petersburg. The round trip from the Cracker Barrel on 54th Ave N was about 210 miles and is one of the nicest rides I have participated in while in Florida.
