CHAPTER THREE

COMMODORE’S LOG Happy New Year!! I hope everyone had a joyous and safe holiday season enjoying friends and family and the Yacht Club being a part of your celebration. The Club looked incredible fully decked out in its holiday best, it was a winter wonderland. The Club was in full swing with many of our favorite seasonal offerings including Gingerbread House Decorating, the Ugly Sweater Party, the Children’s Brunch that included a visit from Santa himself, all topped off by the Dazzler Annual Holiday Show. A Roaring 20’s themed New Year’s Eve party helped us finish off 2023 while toasting in 2024, and our traditional New Year's Day Eggnog Party officially kicked off the start of a new year. Please mark your calendars for a special Meet & Greet with the Flag Officers, Board Members and their wives/significant others on January 5th in the Ballroom from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. The Annual Blessing of the Fleet will be held on January 21st and the St. Petersburg Motor Classic car show in South Straub Park on February 4th. This show gets bigger and better every year! If you wish to volunteer to help with the show please visit their new website at: www.stpetemotorclassic.com.

Regatta season is in full swing at the Club with the John Jennings Memorial Regatta on January 6th, the Salt Pines Cup on January 12th, Master Driver Team Race on the 13th and 14th and our own SPYC Club Championship finishing up the month on the 27th. Please come out and enjoy some world class sailing and root on your favorite contender. Additionally, please do not forget to submit your Yachting Recognition Awards Nomination in to the Yachting Information Committee before January 4th. As we close out 2023 and start a New Year we have many important projects in the works, including construction of our main docks and the continuing planning for our new main clubhouse building. Updates on both projects will be provided as we move these along. I want to thank each of you for your dedication to the Club and wish you a safe and prosperous New Year.

H

appy New Year! I hope each of you had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends alike. It is now 2024 and another year in which we will exceed your expectations and continue to create “Member Delight”. This is also the time of year to reflect on all the great things we have accomplished together, as well as those areas we can improve upon. As we prepare to set sail in the New Year our commitment is to serve the needs of our entire membership and incorporate fun filled, value driven, and diverse activities for all to enjoy. Over the last couple of years, we have noticed price increases in all areas of the Club, resulting in difficulty in managing a very conservative budget. With this said we will be reviewing our entire operation, but especially our Food and Beverage operation, in a way where we can save costs without jeopardizing member amenities and overall satisfaction. More to come here! Our dock project is now in the construction phase even though there is a little more demolition to be done. We have secured all state, city, and county permits and are ready to plow ahead with the actual building of our docks. We will do everything in our power to speed up this process to get the dock back up and running. BROC (Building Replacement Oversight Committee) Update – A lot has been going into the behind the scenes due diligence in the initial planning or our new facility. Surveys have been completed, studying the various easements and how well the parking garage fits in with the overall build. We must get the groundwork done first and right before we can come up with pretty pictures for the membership to view. As our BROC Charmain said in an overview to the board, we are building from the ground up. A message from our Food and Beverage Director – Occasionally we will be hearing from different department heads talking about their respected areas of responsivity, this month we will hear from Jason Hooper, our Food and Beverage Director. Jason has done a fine job since joining our team back in October of 2022. He has been a huge help in evaluating our F&B operations and where we can make the necessary adjustments to instill “Member Delight”, while still focusing on beating budget. We all know this is not an easy task as every member eats at the Club with varying opinions, likes and expectations. We do not run our F&B operation as a profit center, it is an amenity of the Club heavily subsidized by dues. In closing, I want to thank each of you for yet another great year, hoping each of you had a wonderful holiday season and are geared up for an amazing 2024. I want to thank our awesome staff as well. Without them we do not have the Dynamic Club that we do. I look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year! Cheers,

Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM, General Manager, COO

PYC hosted the J/70 World Championship from October 31st -November 4th and five lucky Junior Sailors were given the opportunity to compete. SPYC’s Peyton Weaver, Callen Burnett, Sophia Fuller, Gloria Privis and Jan Mistakdid did an outstanding job of representing the Junior Program and the Club. Sailing against the best eightytwo J/70 teams in the world, our kids were impressive both on and off the water. Not only did they earn the respect of their competitors while out on Tampa Bay, they got to meet and mingle with sailors from 14 different countries. SPYC Opti sailors from both the RWB and Green Fleet team took part in the opening ceremony as flag bearers. The USODA Spring Team Qualifier was held as part of the Opti Southeast Championship and hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club. The SPYC Team put in a good showing with six sailors qualifying to represent the USA at events overseas this spring.

Traveling to Valencia, Spain will be Thomas Weidner, Dalton Cellemare and Bennett Lamb. Traveling to the Netherlands will be Ethan Cox, Pete Caputo and Tucker Gowens. PAGE 8 | ON THE WATER

Our SPYC Green Fleet Team competed over the Thanksgiving holiday at the annual Davis Island Thanksgiving Regatta. The top performers were Liam McFadden Stewart in 2nd place overall and Clara Reali in 5th. Also competing were Oleg Tchentsov, Charles Wood, Ronan Madigan, Bailey Bridge, Luke Rickman and Jack Toth. Based on his performance this past summer at the IODA North American Championship, SPYC’s John Hartney traveled to Malta to compete in the “ROC” Regatta (the Regatta of Championships.) John raced hard against the top 45 sailors from around the globe and finished in 31st overall. The High School sailors have also been hard at work last fall sailing in the first 3 points regattas of the year. SPYC sailors representing both St. Pete High School and Shorecrest Prep have once again been sailing at the top of fleet and have positioned themselves well for a strong spring season. St. Pete High School is currently tied for third overall in the South Points Series and Shorecrest is in 7th.

Director of Food & Beverage

G

oodbye 2023 and welcome 2024! I want to wish you all a happy, safe and healthy year. I'm delighted to be leading the Food and Beverage operation into another chapter of the SPYC history books. As the F&B Director, my primary responsibility is to give guidance to my Team and provide them with the tools they need to create a unique dining experience for you and your guest(s). We are working everyday to get better and provide something you can’t get anywhere else in downtown St. Pete.

There will be times we come up short of our expectations and I want you to know my door is always open for constructive feedback. In accordance with our Mission Statement, Mr. Robicheaux has empowered the Team and I to use our imagination, creativity, and a 110% can-do-attitude to create a memorable experience and atmosphere. We are not perfect, but through your feedback and continued support, we will give 110% to ensure our level of service and your overall dining experience showcases the appreciation we have for you choosing to be a member at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. My second area of responsibility is to make sure we are managing the Food and Beverage operation with a sense of fiscal responsibility. No one likes to hear that prices are going up, but I assure you every decision is designed to not only provide the quality of food you have grown accustomed to, but also

to ensure we are enhancing our menu selections using choice ingredients. Every day that the downtown location is open, we have at least four menus with over seventy combinations of items to choose from. The weekly features have been a huge success with the addition of the small plate and pasta feature. You should be able to find something you like no matter what mood you are in. Our aim is to show our appreciation for your patronage and membership, so feel free to provide any suggestions on how we can improve in this area. If you have a great dining experience, we’d love to hear that too! I have so much more to talk about, but I will close with this: The future is now and this Team is ready for a successful year. I look forward to seeing you around the Clubhouse.

ecemeber is a busy time around the Club, but the Entertainment Committee was able to feature two events before the holiday season really kicked into gear. First Friday festivities may have been cancelled in downtown St. Pete, but that didn't stop us from having our 1st Reggae Night at the Tiki Bar featuring the "Impulse" Reggae Band on December 1st. It was a very successful night and something the Entertainment Committee hopes to do more of. Our second event was the Ugly Sweater Christmas Party & White Elephant Gift Exchange - back by popular demand for the 2nd year! The 2024 Entertainment calendar is coming together and we as a Committee are excited to create events to enhance your Member experience. Look for our "Entertainment Committee Events" in Smooth Sailing. After the events we welcome your feedback and maybe ideas on future events you would like to see. SALTY

SISTERS by Carol Hansen

N

ovember was another busy month, with 25 Salties providing support for the J/70 World Championship. Wednesday morning sailing and racing continued with 420's and Ideal 18’s, even in gusty “frigid” weather. Salties had to drag out their cold weather gear but showed up in good numbers.

Christmas Boutique helpers

Congratulations to Suzanne Boohar, who achieved the status of Skipper’s Hat. This designation indicates competence and ability to teach in all of the crewed boats available to Salties [420, Sonar and Ideal 18]. Also, Glenda Shakespeare received her forty-year charm on November 15th! 2. Salty Sisters teamed up with Woman’s Club to host the SPYC Christmas Boutique on November 28th. The event was well attended and raised funds for Junior Sailing. Salties participated in several FWSA events. Marti Cochran and Jennifer Anderson sailed in the Championship Regatta in Dunedin, and an educational seminar hosted by Dinghy Dames at Davis Island Yacht Club on November 13th was well attended. Sue Davidson and Bijie Ding came in second in the 42nd Annual Sarasota Invitational Regatta! Salties will be hosting the next FWSA interclub regatta, the Christmas Regatta, at the St. Petersburg Sailing Center on December 5th.

RIDERS CLUB

by James Irwin appy New Year! Over the years we have learned that boaters also love to ride motorcycles. We all love to feel the wind in our face. (Maybe that’s why dogs love to stick their heads out of car windows.)

The bond of friendship runs deep with motorcycle enthusiasts. Be it a breakfast ride, a night ride, or a long road trip, motorcyclists are always up for it. When you ride a motorcycle, most riders wave to each other even when they don’t know the other person. No matter which motorcycle you ride or which part of the country you’re from, there is always the bond of brotherhood or sisterhood that brings motorcyclists together. We have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have PAGE 22 | CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB

traveled the continents on motorcycles together. We are currently in discussion to decide where to plan the next event. Cuba and Peru are the current options. We welcome everyone at SPYC to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride. The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious. If you seldom ride or ride a lot, please join us. You’ll be glad you did. The spirit of friendship and community is second to none. She has performed on stages throughout South Africa, Great Britain and the United States.

At our event she will be portraying a fictitious “Tocabaga” woman. “Tocabaga” is a name that first appeared in Spanish documents in the mid 1560’s and is often used to refer to indigenous peoples of the Tampa Bay area during the first Spanish colonial period. This story, as told by Nan, makes today’s audiences relate to the extraordinary effort of one indigenous people as they comprehend a totally new, invasive culture—the dramatic tale of the clash of two worldviews. CRUISING I FLEET

t was a busy Holiday Season for the Cruising Fleet during some of the best weather we’ve experienced since the Spring. In November our fleet cruised to Bradenton Yacht Club & Twin Dolphin on the same weekend, and what an exciting weekend we had. Cruisers docked at BYC were able to join their Denim & Diamonds event Saturday night, with some from Twin Dolphin making the trip across the river by dinghy to join as well. Dancing and riding the mechanical bull (!) were highlights of the evening. Twin Dolphin cruisers enjoyed a wonderful pot luck dinner by the pool Friday evening, and a delicious pasta overload dinner at Fusilly’s Saturday evening.

Vildibill Award

Denim & Diamonds

Several BYC cruisers boated over from BYC Saturday to enjoy the Bradenton Saturday morning. It was a fun and memorable weekend for everyone! Thanks to Port Directors Gini & Paul Berry for their exceptional planning for two ports on the same weekend! Day Trippers met for lunch at Fresco’s in November. Our December 28th Day Trippers outing was a new adventure, with Jay Rice and Kelly Lee McFrederick graciously opening their dock and home to host the Day Trippers. Thanks to Sue Cooper for taking over leadership of the Day Trippers for 2024.

Holiday Party The Fleet celebrated our busy 2023 cruising program at the December 7th Awards & Holiday Party. Twentytwo Cruisers were recognized for participating in five or more cruises, 18 teams were recognized for serving as Port Directors, and 7 cruisers were recognized for serving on the Fleet Committee. Special recognition went to Barbara & Heber Weller for leading the Day Trippers group since its inception 8 years ago! And the Vildibill Trophy was awarded to Kevin & Susan Cross for their outstanding leadership of the Cruising Fleet from 2021-2023. On December 8-10th the fleet cruised to Marina Jacks for a beautiful holiday weekend. Chris & Ben Roddey served as Port Directors, and they planned a wonderful weekend, including the opportunity to watch the Sarasota Boat Parade that began at Marina Jacks Saturday evening. Several cruisers decorated their own boats, making it a very festive kick off to the holiday season.

BROAD REACHERS T

by Juliette Clark, Race Captain

he Broad Reachers continue to have a great time on the water! For the Turkey Bash fun regatta, we attached turkey balloons to our racing marks. The idea was to bash the turkey as you went around the mark. The Floating Turkey Balloons idea was great, but the execution was off. It seems that if you have wind to race then the balloons just blow down on top of the water! Oh well… at least we had great wind and our usual nice lunch at PAG. Carol Hansen took First place. Our first sail of December was the Santa Hat Fun Regatta. You had to start and finish with your hat on, however, thanks to light wind and strengthening current, the starting and finishing weren’t so great. At one point we were sailing backwards, so it was time to abandon. We saved the trophy and hats for next year. Our Friendship Regatta with the Salty Sisters and our Holiday Lunch we will report on in our next article. In the meantime, we wish all of our fellow sailors fair winds and following seas in 2024.

ovember, we had a Fall Y’all four day meetup at St. Augustine RV Resort. Even though there were just a few of us that could make it, we enjoyed getting together and hearing about our summer travels and ideas for our next adventures. One night we dined at the St. Augustine Fish Camp near the historic old town. Then a breakfast at Keke’s, and another dining experience at Salt Life Food Shack on St. Augustine Beach. You could tell the town was gearing up for the holidays, and so were we. Thanks to Larry & Joy Wissing, who joined Brian & Angela Kowalik and a few other individuals, for a great meet-up in St. Augustine. It never gets old!

ere’s a short story about a Wing Shooter called Iceman. In May of 1969 Iceman was in the Marines recruiting office when the phone rang. The Marine Gunny handed him the phone, “It’s your mother.” She was calling to tell her son that he had just received a presidential appointment to the Naval Academy. Iceman had just enlisted with the Marines. A deal needed to be cut. After graduating from the Naval Academy with his BS in Engineering, Iceman, keeping his part of the deal, signed on with the Marines.

In 1998, after 25 colorful and not yet tellable years as a USMC officer, Colonel Willy Bain, retired. He then started a company, IC Tech, providing military support services. In 2001 Northrop Grumman bought his company and Iceman became the Director of the Counter Narcoterrorism Support Group. In 2012 he retired from Northrop Grumman and is currently president of IOSG, Inc. specializing in foreign business operations and material acquisition. When you see Iceman in the bar, ask him about working with Russian helicopters while in Afghanistan. One more thing about that day back in May of 1969...on returning home, in the mail Iceman found his draft notice from the US Army.
