COMMODORE’S LOG
Hello Friends.....Well, this certainly is an exciting time for our Club. By this time, you surely have heard the news that our Board of Directors has unanimously approved a long-term master plan for the replacement of our clubhouse in approximately five years. If you have not yet had a chance to view the video that we’ve put together about our master facilities planning process, I would encourage you to visit the Member Central section of the website by logging into your member portal at www.spyc.org to get all of the details. In the video, we talk about the steps we took to get member input on our building, the additional research we undertook to see what was feasible, and how we got to the construction decisions that have been top of mind lately.
With the summer season in full swing, the 4th of July is right around the corner. Don’t forget that during these summer months we shut down both clubhouses in order to take care of maintenance needs. The Downtown Clubhouse will be closed on July 24th and will reopen on Tuesday, August 8th. The Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse will close on Tuesday, September 5th and will reopen on Thursday, September 21st.
I recently had the pleasure of attending an event put on by the St. Petersburg Motor Classic car show at which $10,000 checks were distributed to two very deserving charities, the Kind Mouse and the Louise Graham Regeneration Center Congratulations to car show chairman Andy Evans and his hard-working committee for making this possible. Additionally, we are excited that work continues on the main dock replacement project. The finished product will be well worth the wait.
As noted earlier, we have installed a new electronic entry gate system for our parking garage. This should result in improved security and control of our garage. The gate system will be “going live” during the month of August. Please be sure to pick up your new decals by visiting our valet parking team.
Enjoy your summer!
Cordially,
Brian K. Smith, CommodoreMission Statement: The St. Petersburg Yacht Club provides preeminent yachting and social experiences for members, their families and guests, and honors the Club’s rich yachting heritage in a welcoming environment.
General Manager’s Log by:
Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCMThe heat is on as the summertime humidity settles in. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful place like St. Petersburg even with the heat, summer showers and storms. We still can get out on the water, or in the water, to cool off whether it’s at one of our two pool locations with a cool drink in hand, the beach or a relaxing sail. Things also tend to slow down a bit which makes coming to the Club to get out of the heat much more relaxing with less crowds.
As we make a splash this summer, we must be mindful of those around us. With summertime in full swing, we are looking forward to welcoming more members back to our pool areas. To provide the Club atmosphere, you expect, we are hoping you keep these few courtesies in mind as you enjoy your time poolside:
• Be respectful and courteous to all members.
• Diaper and clothes changing should always occur in the restroom.
• You are responsible for your family's safety. As a reminder please do not run, dive or horseplay, as we do not have lifeguards and both pools have limited space.
Additionally, please take a moment to review the pool rules (https://www.spyc.org/Member-Central/Club_Info) that apply to all members and their guests. We look forward to seeing you poolside this summer!
Safety and the security of our staff and membership is very important to us. For this reason, we ask that you please escort your guests through the Club. If you have guests meeting you at the Club, please meet them at the Front Desk or inform our Front Desk Team that you are expecting guests so we can direct them to you. As of Tuesday, June 13th the entrance on Bayshore Drive (flagpole entrance) will remain locked. Members and their guests should utilize our main entrance on the north side of the building off Beach Drive.
Annual Shutdown Reminder:
• Main Club - July 24th through August 7th
• PAG – September 5th through September 20th
Projects planned for the Main Club include: Moving of the banquet kitchen back to the second floor, finalizing the parking garage gates and some deep cleaning at both properties.
Since the recent letter, followed by an informative video presentation sent by Commodore Smith, there have been many comments and concerns stirring around. Overall, the comments have been very positive in nature. I would like to make a few things clear as we start the planning process over the next few years. As stated in the approved motion the Board has approved for planning to begin. Within that planning a committee will be formed to make sure we get this right as far as design in keeping with the Clubs history and traditions. In addition to finding a location to conduct Club operations, when the Club is shut down in approximately five years, it is also Management's and Staff’s commitment to continue serving its members at a level that is expected of us, and to continue to add value and member delight to all we do.
In closing, it’s been a busy and productive two years here as your General Manager and I look forward to many years ahead as the future continues to look brighter and brighter. For those of you who summer up north, are traveling or sticking it out here in St. Pete have a safe and enjoyable summer!

The world of sailing is all set to witness another exciting and prestigious event this year...the 2023 J/70 World Championship in St. Petersburg, Florida. As an internationally acclaimed sailing destination, St. Petersburg has been chosen to host this highly-anticipated sailing competition from October 30th through November 5th, 2023.
With competitors hailing from all corners of the globe, the J/70 World Championship promises to be an unforgettable experience and offers an unmatched experience for participants, sailing enthusiasts and casual spectators alike. In addition to the races, there will be a variety of shore-side activities to keep spectators entertained throughout the event. From live music and food trucks to sailing clinics and meet-and-greets with the competitors...there’s something for everyone!
Save The Date to Experience The 2023 J/70 World Championship
October 30th - November 5th, 2023
Hosted at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club
The St. Petersburg to Fort Lauderdale Race, a 403 nm race that captivated the sailing world in SORC from 1941 to 1990, is making a comeback. The prestigious race, once hailed as one of the world's major oceanic challenges, has been revived as part of a re-vamped SORC Series in 2023-2024.
In its prime, St. Pete - Lauderdale attracted an impressive fleet of 134 boats, showcasing the spirit of competition and adventure. Sailors are eagerly anticipating its return, with ORC and PHRF rated boats expected to converge in Tampa Bay from the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, the East Coast and even Europe. The race starts on November 8th with St. Petersburg YC hosting. As a precursor to the main event, a feeder race from Pensacola Yacht Club begins on November 2nd . Race Chairman Chris Lewis commented, “Working with SORC and Storm Trysail Club to rejuvenate offshore racing in the Gulf of Mexico and I am thrilled to be able to offer this iconic event to sailors. We will have some ‘retro’ shore gear available and based upon the initial enthusiasm; many past competitors are expected to show up on the start line.”
» Details at: https://www.sorcsailing.org/islands-in-the-stream-series
» Registration is open at Yacht Scoring: www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=16013 and further information will be forthcoming for competitors about dockage and accommodation options.
» Contact: Chris Lewis at chair_st-pete-lauderdale@sorcsailing.org for further details
Junior Activities Update
by Todd Fedyszyn Youth Sailing DirectorThe 2022/2023 Florida sailing season has come and gone and there is no better time than now to take a quick look back on the successes of the SPYC Junior Team. We were fortunate to host five events here at SPYC and to travel to all corners of the USA to compete in Opti, ILCA and HS events.
Over the weekend of May 4th - 7th SPYC hosted the annual USODA Team Trials Regatta , widely known as the most prestigious Opti event held each year in the USA. Open to the top 192 Opti sailors in the country who pre-qualified to compete, this event was used to choose the top sailors who would represent the USA at the World Championships , the European Championship and the North American Championship . Competing for the SPYC were Thomas Weidner, Dalton Cellemare, Scarlett Bizouarn, Pete Caputo, Leah Abrams, Finn Cox, Chris Shaffer and John Hartney who qualified to represent the USA at the North Americans
Sailors representing SPYC once again had a very successful HS Sailing Season with both St. Pete HS and Shorecrest Prep qualifying for the SAISA District Championship in Wrightsville Beach, NC. St. Pete HS sailed a strong event finishing in 6th place overall and Shorecrest finished in 11th.
Our SPYC ILCA sailors continue to shine with Kate Danielson and Jan Mistak both qualifying for the ILCA Youth World Championship this summer in Poland. Kate and Jan qualified based on their Grand Prix Ranking for the 2022 sailing season. Our younger laser sailors are also working hard on their boat handling skills and their boat speed in anticipation of qualifying for next summers ILCA 4 World Championships in Portugal.
Callen Burnett, Sidney Moyer and Kate Danielson will all be competing this summer at the US Sailing Youth Championship in Bristol, Rhode Island, which also serves as the qualifier for the World Sailing Youth World Championships for 2023.
Our Opti RWB Team will be making the trek north this summer to compete in the USODA National Championship, Girls National Championship, and Team Race National Championship at the Hampton Yacht Club in Virginia. Thirteen SPYC sailors are signed up and ready to take on the country’s best sailors.
Our SPYC Green Fleet has had another great year with many of our sailors getting ready to make the transition up to the advanced RWB Team. Our sailors showed excellent signs of improvement, with regatta results starting in the bottom half of the fleet. Claire Dunlop and Clara Reali finished in 3rd and 5th overall in the final regatta of the season at the Davis Island Schools Out Regatta
SPYC History Revealed
on!
When the Honorable Robert E. (Bob) Beach landed in Tampa at the age of 21, he got a job at a local night club to put himself through the University of Tampa. [Subject of photo to the right of the bell.] After graduating, he immediately enrolled at Stetson College of Law in Gulfport and, being the industrious youth that he was, found himself a job bartending at the SPYC!
In 1958, he was admitted to the bar and in 1968 became a Circuit Court Judge for Pinellas County—a career that spanned over 5 decades.—the longest running judgeship in Florida history! SCY/Bob Beach Championship
Meet North Shore Aquatic Complex .
One of the interesting things about the Yacht Club is that it is not only a Social Club, but a true Yacht Club. People are yachters and some of the best in the world have come out of this Club!
Judge Beach
While in his late 30’s, Judge Beach took up swimming to break the nicotine habit and by age 40 he was swimming a mile in 33 minutes! In 1970, he was instrumental in the formation of US Masters swimming and was the first Vice Chairman. This year marked the 51st year of the St. Pete event named after him—which is reportedly the longest running masters swim meet in the world—in which Judge Beach swam 8 individual heats and 2 swim relays—one age 55+ the other age 65+! He turns 93 in July!
During his high impact leadership career, his swimming accomplishments mounted: 22 US Master All-American honors, 8 All Star Team honors, set national and world records in Masters swimming, USMS long distance all-star over 10 times, 48 time All American...! In 2017 at age 87, he was the first Judge and oldest person to swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco Bay (doing this in just 33 minutes), and the list goes on!
While celebrating birthdays: he came within 2 miles of swimming the English Channel; climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro; parachute jumped in Africa; traveled the world—sending cards featuring him at exotic locales. Judge Beach donated that photo of him as a bartender as an encouragement to others that nothing is impossible to achieve if you put your mind to it.
KEEP ON SWIMMIN!!!
I f you look at the bell hanging on the bar wall of the Heritage Lounge, next to it you will see what is obviously a photo of a man tending bar. What is not obvious is – who it is? Please read
I never would have believed my life would have turned out this good—being a Judge, living in St. Petersburg, being a member of this Club...and all the good things that have happened to me here.
I love my life!
Nauticats through the years
The SPYC NautiCats are celebrating their 17th season!
Their accumulation of songs over the years inspired them to take a "Sentimental Journey" Program to 6 retirement communities from April to June this season, with tunes written between 1919 and 1975. Not only does the enthusiastic reception from their audiences, but also singing at weekly practices at the YC, provide a unique sense of satisfaction and esprit de corps for the 25 members of the NautiCats; both women and men. The NautiCats also perform at the Downtown Club (4th of July, Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, Cruising Fleet, Woman's Club) as well as events at Pass-aGrille. New members are always welcome, and if you play an instrument, you are encouraged to join in.
Practices are held at the Downtown Clubhouse every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30 - 5:00 pm, and are generally followed by Happy Hour in the Heritage Lounge. The seasons first practice session will begin on Tuesday, September 12th at 3:30 pm . For questions, or to sign-up, please contact Judy McFadden , the NautiCat Founder at: (727) 455-9793 -OR- Judyp@tampabay.rr.com .

We are happy to announce that the St. Petersburg Motor Classic car show was a great success this year. Our volunteers and sponsors played a vital role in making it possible for us to be able to donate $20,000 to our supported charities, The Kinder Mouse and Louise Graham Center. On Wednesday, May 31st, both organizations were presented checks for $10,000 at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club by Commodore Brian Smith and St. Petersburg Motor Classic Chairman Andy Evans. Many of our sponsors and committee members were present to celebrate this milestone, and we look forward to an even better 2024.

CRUISING FLEET 2023 Commodore's Cruise
by Kevin Cross, Fleet CaptainThe 2023 Commodore’s Cruise is one for the record books! During the last two weeks of April, SPYC cruisers ventured far and wide. Hurricane Ian damage necessitated several smaller groups following different itineraries with three primary destinations: Captiva, Key West or Stuart via the Okeechobee Waterway. In total, 32 boats plus several iron dinghies visited fourteen FCYC clubs plus seven marinas and one anchorage. Cruisers posted photos throughout the cruise so we could see what each group was up to – great fun!!
Highlights included dining, shopping and pool time in Sarasota; paddleboarding and bicycling in Venice; golf carting and beach walks in Boca Grande; boat trip to Cabbage Key; Faye’s concert, pizza party and sunsets in Captiva; ghost tour and TALOS docktails in Key West; Tunnel of Love dinghy trip and Sunset Moon dinner in Pelican Bay; mastering the locks, reaching the Atlantic Ocean and visiting Harbour Ridge Y&CC for the Okeechobee group; great food and the friendliest welcome at Isles YC; peace and quiet at lovely St Charles YC; and crossing paths with fellow cruisers along the way!
Many thanks to Port Directors: Garry & Pam Haas, Kevin & Debbie Hopper, Joe Petrella & Camille Iurillo, Rob & Michele Matthes, Dave & Martha Monfried, Jack Rice & Kelly Lee McFrederick, Frank & Jackie Robinson, Jay Mabrey & Debbie Storey, Allen & Pam Thomas, Al Torres & Jennifer Kirk, Tom & Faye Turke, and Heber & Barbara Weller. What amazing volunteers!
The last weekend of April, returning cruisers met at the downtown docks for our last cruise-in before dock construction. Seven additional boats joined the cruise-in with the highlight being the Key West Street Party. What a fabulous party and great time to share Commodore’s Cruise tales from far and wide!
Special thanks to Commodore Brian Smith for providing an informative Club update at our April meeting and to Ed Tillett of the Waterway Guide who spoke at our May meeting. May also included a fun-filled Longboat Key Club weekend thanks to Port Directors Debbie Storey and Jay Mabrey
While we take a break from regular meetings over the summer, our monthly cruises continue, and we’ll gather at Pass-a-Grille for a summer party on July 20th. Check out our calendar posted on the Cruising Fleet webpage.
WINE CLUB
by Jean Cox & Carla DiazWe aren’t snobbish – it’s just fact: one is hard pressed to find a better food and wine pairing venue in St. Petersburg than the Wine Club at the SPYC! The Wine Club, founded and facilitated by Jean Cox and Carla Diaz, meets six times a year for a gourmet tasting expertly paired with small production wines and boutique wineries.
Some wines we’ve experienced this year were from:
• Schramsberg, making sparkling wine from cool-climate vineyards, was served in 1972 at the White House’s “Toast of Peace” and has been served at official state functions by every U.S. Presidential administration since that time.
• Arnot-Roberts, Peter Michael, known for making terrior driven wines in the classic artisanal tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux.
• DuMOL and Pride Mountain, known for making big red wines from higher elevation mountain vineyards.
• Most recently we enjoyed E. Guigal Rhone wines who have won more 100 pt ratings for their wines from Robert Parker than any single wine producer. This dinner was paired with four courses featuring Yellow Fin Tuna, Duck Confit, Seared Elk Loin, and Veal.
If you have a passion for excellently paired food and wine, email thewineclubspyc@gmail.com for more information. It’s educational, delectable, and fun!
We closed out our 2022-2023 year with a Spring Tea Party & Recital, and 15th Anniversary Celebration! We reminisced about our fifteen year history, sharing the same anniversary with PAG joining SPYC, and our roots of the Ladies Auxiliary which came before us. A tribute was provided for those we had lost along the way, forever in our hearts. As we looked back on many memories we’ve had over the years, we were reminded of the fun we had and the friends we have made. What a joy and pleasure to have been your President and to serve you for this special anniversary year!

Another character in our club is called Copperhead. He earned that nickname while on a Wing Shooters hunting trip in Kentucky. His heroic feat was nothing for him, he had spent his youth carousing the wild waters and woods near Bradenton. From those days he tells a story of a custom-built fishing skiff that attached and was peddled across town using two bicycles. In the early 70s, enlisting in the Navy kept Copperhead out of Vietnam. He opted for submarine service and ended up as a nuclear power plant operator on a boomer – the slang term for a ballistic sub. His duty entailed three months in Honolulu alternating with three months under sea and out of sight. While on those missions, he only knew he was somewhere in the Pacific. Every couple of weeks the sub would float an antenna to gather news and family messages. Six family grams, as they were called, were allowed for every mission. After seven years of active duty, Copperhead returned to Florida as an operator in a nuclear plant. By joining the reserves, he was able to complete twenty-five years of Navy service.
This guy we called Copperhead is known on the street as Mark Foster and has been in the Wing Shooters since nearly the beginning. He serves as our shooting coordinator, lining up the venue for our weekly Friday morning shoots. Look for Copperhead at the bar and ask about life in the Navy, hunting dove from the railroad tracks, and the battle with his namesake.

RV LAND CRUISERS
by Angela Kowalik Wagon MasterSome might say good things are worth repeating. And so it goes, Alaska 2.0! We are headed back to Alaska this summer, to take in all its beauty. It’s a multi-month, thousands of miles, trip but worth every penny. At least the fuel prices should be lower than they were last year.
Here’s some fun facts about Alaska, the 49th state:
• Size – it’s the largest state. So large, it’s larger than the next 3 largest states combined: Texas, California, and Montana at 663,300 square miles. It has more coastline than the rest of the U.S. combined (2nd is Florida). If it were a country, it would be in the top 20 biggest countries in the word!
• Ownership – Alaska used to belong to Russia, until it was sold to the U.S. in 1876. It’s only 50 miles to Russia.
• Capital – Juneau is the only capital not accessible by road (take a boat or plane)
• Water – Alaska is 14.2% water, it has 3 million lakes, and more than 3,000 rivers (Yukon River is 3rd longest in U.S.). It has coastlines on three different seas: the Artic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and Bering Sea.
• Glaciers – it has the largest glacier in the U.S. - Matanuska Glacier. About 3% of Alaska is covered by glaciers (over 100,000 glaciers)
• Mountains – of the 20 highest mountains in the U.S., 17 are in Alaska, including the highest peak in North America – Denali (formerly known as Mt. McKinley).
• Forests – it has the largest national forest in the U.S. - Tongass (located in Juneau).
• Volcanoes – sometimes referred to as “the land of volcanoes”, it has over 130 with about 90 considered to be active.
• State Sport – is dog mushing, once the primary mode of transportation.
• Alaskan Malamute – a sled dog, one of the oldest domesticated dog breeds in the world.
• Northern Lights – visible most of the year with up to 240 days in the Northern Lights season (mid-August to mid-April), particularly in Fairbanks.
Just a few interesting and awe inspiring things about Alaska that warrants making a return trip!To join the group and keep up with our events where we will be making adventures happen, please contact: Angela Kowalik at SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com.
BROAD REACHERS SALTY SISTERS
by Carol Hansen by Carol HansenTheMaggie Mug Race was finally completed during the month of April. This annual race is competed in Ideals, each boat with a crew of three. The trophy, donated by Maggie McClure, is a silver bowl mounted on a wooden base. It is a perpetual trophy presented to the winning skipper of this series. Placing first was Sue Davidson, coming in 2nd was Captain Dee Gill and 3rd place was Marti Cochran
A Pram Participation series was also held in April. Because Joanne Simmons won FIVE races in the series, she received the Hong Kong Trophy. This trophy was donated by PC Erni Mittermayr in 1965 and is a perpetual trophy presented to the Salty Sister who achieves five consecutive firsts in a regular
The final two weeks of the Broad Reacher’s sailing season was fun and quite successful. Juliette Clarke stepped in for Race Captain Katie Rodgers and organized a morning of racing consisting of “Rabbit” starts. There were five sailors and TEN races, and Gloria Davis kindly volunteered to be the PRO. KT Trudeau came in First Place overall, winning five of the ten races. Juliette Clarke, Carol Hansen, Karin Fydrich, and Dana Kollman made up the remainder of the group.
The last Pram sailing day, was a “Mother Ducky” race organized by PC Carol Hansen . Teams consisted of three sailors, all sailing together crossing the start line, rounding marks, and finishing all at the same time. “Mother Ducky” Joanne Simmons and her “Ducklings” Bijie Ding and Emily Kennedy came in first place!
On May 24th, the Salties had a great day in Sonars. After reviewing rigging, four Sonars set sail and completed a total of three races. Our “Land Cruise” Chair, KT Trudeau thanked Beverly Smoak for lending her beautiful home and putting together a great day on Lake Keystone. There was kayaking, rafting, paddle boarding, pontoon boat rides and food galore.
The last Saturday of the month was our Annual End of Year Sail to Hotel Zamora for lunch. The winds were predicted to be 12-15 in the morning but were only 2-3 kts. The ten sailors included Katie Rodgers, Dana Kollman, Alli Kollman, Sue Davidson, Lisa Avila, KT Trudeau, Mary Moosbruger, Pat Burrows, Bijie Ding, and Carol Hansen left the PAG Club at 10:00 am and arrived about 12:30 pm ready for lunch!!! Our Safety Boat, with Gloria Davis and Selga Sakss, had its own issues. They managed to get not one, but two good Samaritans to tow them to the nearest Marina to refuel and then towed back to the Club when the engine failed to run. From there, they jumped in a car and joined us for lunch. Afterwards, the wind picked up and we all made it safely back to the Club in about 20-30 minutes. All in all, it was a great day!!
Come join us for Saturday morning for some fun sailing and racing. You can participate as a sailor, race committee, or safety ashore. For more information about becoming a Broad Reacher, contact Carol Hansen at Carol@dband1.com
CAR CLUB
by Andy EvansOur Car Club focuses on SPYC's automotive enthusiasts, but organizing the Car Club, planning events, and recruiting committee members has always been challenging. After the excitement and success of the St. Petersburg Motor Classic Car Show, we want to revitalize the Car Club by organizing our first-ever casual meet-up. The format is simple: all SPYC members are invited to bring their "special" or "favorite" ride and connect with other members who share their interests. Of course, anyone who is just an enthusiast for all things automotive is welcome. It's like a mini-car show where everyone can enjoy the company of fellow car lovers.

We will come together in the garage area and park our cars together. No registration, fees, or sign-up is required. Our goal is to make sharing and showcasing our rides easy and enjoyable. The Golf Club at downtown SPYC embarked on our first successful overnight trip to Mission Inn up in Howey-InThe-Hills. Special thanks to Bill Protz for planning two days of 18 holes of golf and hosting a hospitality suite followed by dinner at El Conquistador. A good time was had by all!
Our recent monthly golf outings have included Bardmoor Golf Club, Mangrove Bay and Isla Del Sol. Congratulations to all the winning teams at these outings! Our group is a diverse mix of people and ALL skill levels of golf. We typically play once a month at a new course in the Tampa Bay area and play a four person scramble format to keep up pace of play.
Our monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm at the Downtown Clubhouse. Meetings include games and a raffle and usually a guest speaker from our local community. No meetings are held during the months of July and August or December and January. During our recent May meeting we listened to an engaging talk from guest speaker Mike Wilson from the board of the Tampa Bay Watch
We learned about the importance of protecting and restoring our Tampa Bay watershed and all of the wonderful community driven projects, programs and outreach of this important organization. Please direct all future membership inquiries for the Golf Group to Bekah Rush at rush.rebekah@gmail.com or come meet us in person at one of our monthly meetings.
