COMMODORE’S LOG CHAPTER SEVEN

As we transition from Spring to Summer there is a lot of activity around the Club. I hope you were able to enjoy some of our key events in April including the St. Petersburg Motor Classic car show in South Straub Park. There were over 250 cars in this year’s event and I was honored to present the Commodore’s Award for the car I would most like to drive home.

I want to thank the volunteers from the Club that worked so hard to carry on this marquee event for SPYC. I also hope you were able to attend the Easter Brunch. There were over 600 members in attendance with a spread of food that got everyone hopping! The Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band & Dinner was incredible with our Club parrot heads.

May is shaping up to be full of opportunities to enjoy. SPYC's Annual Viewing Party for the Kentucky Derby is May 4th in the Ballroom. Come and enjoy a Mint Julep or a Kentucky Mule along with heavy hors d’oeuvres and a decedent dessert spread. If you don’t over indulge watching the ponies you will want to check out the Cinco De Mayo Brunch or Tiki Bar Party with a Taco Bar the next day.

Please mark your calendar to attend a new function this year, the Junior Sailing Banquet on May 10th - see details in this issue on page 8. Mother's Day is also around the corner. Surprise mom with a special Mother's Day Brunch Buffet at the downtown clubhouse, or dine at Pass-a-Grille from their special pre-set holiday menu (please be sure you make reservations for either location). There are multiple opportunities to spoil mom this year! Finally don’t miss the Bee Gee’s Tribute Show & 70's Party show on May 25thspaces are filling up fast so make your reservations soon.

As the summer heats up I encourage everyone to enjoy a cool cocktail at one of our swimming pools with fellow members. Don’t forget to take advantage of our summer sailing programs at the Sailing Center as well. This is a great opportunity for experienced sailors along with those that would like to take a sailing class.

If you have gazed out over our downtown marina lately you will see some real progress. The main 475’ dock is nearly complete along with its 7 -75’ pilings. The event pier continues to take shape and demolition of the old docks is all but finished. You will see more activity as contractors for electrical, plumbing and fire suppression begin their work. The Building Reconstruction Committee continues their efforts as they identify key attributes for the new clubhouse. I hope to have some renderings of possible design options to share with members this summer.

Finally, the GM Search Committee continues to meet regularly and review applications. In the meantime I want to thank our Controller, Colleen Finney, who has agreed to serve as the Interim GM. Colleen has many years of experience at the Club and will do a fine job. Please join me in supporting her. I hope to see you around the Club or out on the water!

Get Ready to Make a Splash This Summer!

Summer is already here and we are looking forward to warm days and cold Tiki drinks in our hands! This also means we are looking forward to welcoming more members back to our pool areas. In order to provide the Club atmosphere you expect, we are hoping you keep these few courtesies in mind as you enjoy your time poolside:

• Be respectful and courteous of all members.

• Diaper and clothes changing should always occur in the restroom.

The 2024 FLYING DUTCHMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Flying Dutchman World Championships recently concluded with an exhilarating display of their sailing skills in diverse conditions. Held March 23rd -31st, sailors from across six different countries gathered to compete for the prestigious title.

Weather played a significant role throughout the championship, with competitors facing a mix of conditions. The event witnessed days of brilliant sunshine followed by challenging gusts and unpredictable winds, providing a true test of skill and adaptability for the sailors. Despite the changing conditions, the competitors showcased exceptional seamanship and determination, navigating their vessels with finesse and agility.

In the end, nine races were completed and Germany 88 (Kay-Uwe Lüdtke / Kai Schäfers) emerged victorious, demonstrating remarkable skill and consistency throughout the championship. Their performance captivated spectators and earned them the coveted title of the 2024 Flying Dutchman World Champion

We would like to commend and thank our amazing volunteers and race committee members for ensuring the smooth execution of the event, from race management to hospitality, enriching the experience for participants and spectators alike.

Magical History Tour

On February 4, 2024 Past Commodore Francis M. Scarritt, Jr. (Frank) passed away. Commodore Scarritt was a well respected and well liked business man who supported several community organizations and charities. Humor and a smile were his calling cards.

During the major 1990’s renovation of the Club, then Commodore Scarritt along with fellow Flag Officers: A.C. `Toby’ Krayer, Jr., Richard G. Jones, Jr., David H. Knowlton and P/C R. Donald Mastry (Club Counsel) led the charge for rebuilding.

May 8, 1990: Commodore Scarritt, presented the renovation plan to a standing room only membership meeting. The plan included: an expanded casual first floor dining room with a water view; on the second floor: an expanded ballroom, waterfront banquet, card rooms, and spacious terraces overlooking the yacht basin and Straub Park. “The proposed amenity that elicited the most excited comments, was a pool deck with a modestly sized swimming pool… “The Members supported the plan and the Board proceeded!”

May 23, 1992:

The Magical History Tour group is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to become part of our docent team! Please contact Trisha Birkenstock for more details.

Many thanks to all who have contributed in one way or another to the research & development of our history!

See you in the Hallways!

The 2024 St. Petersburg Motor Classic

Bigger and Better!

One of the participants sent us an email praising this year's show. The message read: "Just want to say that was an epic show, THANK YOU!! I loved everything about it... Great setting! Great music! Great charities! A wonderfully diverse crowd of attendees asked me questions about my car... If I only do one show next year, St. Pete Motor Classic is the winner!!"

It seems like we have successfully achieved our goal of putting together a high-quality car show that offers a diverse selection of quality cars in a beautiful, family-friendly atmosphere. Moreover, we were able to raise funds for some special local charities. We did all of that while providing great music and delicious food and enjoying the best weather one could ever hope for.

We've been overwhelmed with positive feedback, and we want to thank everyone who contributed to this event's success. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, our sponsors, our dedicated and hard-working committee, and over 80 big-hearted volunteers. We also want to express our gratitude to the 251 registrants and the massive number of spectators who attended the show. Your support and dedication make this event possible.

We cannot accurately convey how many hours are freely devoted by everyone involved in producing this show to helping our charities and community.

The 2024 SPMC will be remembered as one of the greatest shows since being established in 2002.

Your incredible support has been instrumental in the success of this show, and we're already eagerly looking forward to our 2025 show. We hope to see you all there, ready to make it another unforgettable event.

As this fiscal year comes to an end, I would like to offer my appreciation for the support you showed to me as this year’s President of WC@SPYC. It was my pleasure serving you and connecting with so many new friends. Seeing you enjoy this years programs meant so much!

I am grateful for my WC@SPYC board members for their guidance and support. We accomplished so much for the future success of this ladies organization, and that will continue with the leadership of the 2024-2025 Board of Directors.

Please be in attendance for our last meeting Thursday, May 9th to hear Dawn Zachman from the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation inform you of the important work they do in support of children affected by cancer then followed with the installation of your new Board of Directors for 2024-2025.

The Wing Shooters Society has held Friday morning sporting clays shoots for many years.

We meet at the club and leave at 8:oo am.

The places we go are about an hour away, we shoot 100 targets, have a nice lunch and everybody is back home by 1:30 pm. Since we started this, sporting clays has become more popular, more people have moved to Florida and more charities are using sporting clays as a fundraising event. This newfound popularity has brought pressure on our Friday shoots. Road traffic is up, the shooting venues are busy and our favorite eating establishments are crowded. This has messed up our Friday morning shoots. We’ve done a few things to improve the situation.

Disruptor , AKA Hermann Amaya , checks the availability of the shooting venues. We have also added Wednesday as a second shooting day. A few of us will also find another day of the week to shoot. We coordinate these weekly and one-off outings through a group email list. When one of our members posts that he has an itch to go shooting, you can bet his car seats will get filled. If you have ever been to one of our rowdy monthly meetings, you’ll understand why the camaraderie found in the Wing Shooters works so well.

Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Frank Robinson at fhr506@gmail.com.

RAINBOW REGATTA 2024 SALTY SISTERS & BROAD REACHERS

The 2024 Rainbow Regatta was held at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, hosted by the Luffing Lassies and Bitter Ends. This was the first time FWSA opted for a two-day regatta, hoping to be able to get in at least one day of sailing. Well, with winds on the first day ranging from 1827 and then 25-37 on the second day, the Rainbow went into the books…..again, as a non-sailing event. Last year, there was no wind and this year there was too much wind.

Not all was lost, though, the hosting Clubs had plenty of activities planned, just in case. There was a gentleman playing bagpipes, rules education, an interview with an Olympic Sailor (Lara DallmanWeiss) via Zoom, a scavenger hunt, and dancing to a rocking band. The meals were catered, and everyone had plenty to eat and drink.

A huge thank you to all who tied up, untied, loaded, unloaded, boats on the trailer (Broad Reachers) and into the U-Haul (Salty Sisters). Thanks to our drivers Mik Severini and Lisa Avila who hauled the boats to and from Sarasota.

A special thanks to all our support crew who were at the Sailing Center, PAG, and in Sarasota, we couldn’t do this without you. Last but not least, thanks to our coaches Charlie LaLane and Barbara Watson, who came to Sarasota to root us on!!!

In preparation for the Rainbow Regatta, the Broad Reachers and Salty Sisters held shared training days together at PAG and at the Sailing Center. Coached by Barbara and Charlie, we practiced starting tactics with dozens of starts, using 2-minute sequences to keep things moving. We also dropped in a few marks to practice tactics around the course. On our last day together, we set up a course like the Rainbow Regatta, with offset marks and a “gate” so that everyone would be familiar with the course in Sarasota.

We look forward to next year hosted by the Boca Ciega Rhumb Runners and PAG Broad Reachers, hopefully the wind will cooperate!!

April was such an exciting meeting as we installed the Board for the 2024-2025 year, and thanked the 2023-2024 Board members, the assistants, and coordinators. Southeast Guide Dogs’ ambassador, Christie, stole everyone’s heart.

WOUR MISSION:

"To promote sailing and to assist our members in becoming more proficient in the science of sailing."

e have many boaters at the Yacht Club who eventually make a transition to RVing. It’s a natural fit after all, with some of the same or similar systems and accommodations. And it’s a natural progression with the desire to travel just a bit farther, see more inland, and without such dependency on weather (or rather tides).

Our latest convert is Doug Byrd & Sue Shettler who took possession of a new 43’ Class A 2024 Newmar Dutch Star in April. They are so ready to hit the road and see what this new adventure is all about. Just like any new RV owner, they are finding there’s lots of new things to learn about such as campgrounds, memberships, apps, gadgets, and so on.

Several of our members met in April to meet our newest members, and to discuss future happenings with the group. Discussions will continue as we set plans for the summer and upcoming events.

Our next meeting is Thursday, May 23rd at 5:00 pm. Hoping more of you will join us!

To join the group and keep up with our events where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik at: SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com

COME JOIN US IN SOME SAILING FUN!

March and April were busy cruising months for the Fleet. In March, 18 boats and one iron dinghy headed to Twin Dolphin Marina and Bradenton Yacht Club for a long St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Tom and Sandra Thomas were our Port Directors for both marinas and did an amazing job of planning activities for the two locations. Friday night activities for the Bradenton group included docktails on Tom and Sandra’s beautiful 'Sunset Moon', followed by dinner at the Bradenton YC. The Twin Dolphin group enjoyed lively docktails and a delicious dinner at O’Brick’s. On Saturday, the Thomas’s arranged a tour of Marlow Marine, where the group was treated to tours of several magnificent Marlows in the boatyard. The group all left dreaming of future Commodore’s Cruises on Marlow yachts!

On Saturday evening, the Twin Dolphin group met for docktails by the pool, followed by a festive St. Patrick’s Day celebration in downtown Bradenton, complete with bands and food trucks. The Bradenton YC group enjoyed another delicious dinner at the club.

Our March Day Trippers headed to Buoy’s on the water for lunch on March 26th. One hearty group of boaters started out together by boat but didn’t get far before the 20 knot winds and 3-5 foot seas in the bay made a drive by car seem like a much better (and drier) option. Eighteen boaters enjoyed a beautiful, but windy, lunch by the water.

At the April 4th luncheon Commodore Boyle carried on the tradition of addressing the Fleet and kicking off the Commodore’s Cruise. He gave the group very timely and informative update on Club activities and wished the Commodore’s Cruise participants a safe voyage. Chuck Goes, FCYC West Liaison, presented 6 Fleet members with Founders Awards for visiting 13 or more FCYC clubs in 2023.

Our April Commodore’s Cruise departed April 5th, with 15 boats headed to the Keys, and then 10 boats heading on to the Bahamas. Tom & Sandra Thomas are leading the voyage from the Keys to the Bahamas! Tune in to the next issue for photos!

The Wine Club at SPYC is starting our 24-25 season in May. This "Club Within the Club" is specifically focused on wine education and exploration of wines from boutique and smaller production wineries.

We meet six times a year, every other month, with a max of fifty members. The selected wines at each meeting are paired with gourmet tasting plates created by the SPYC culinary team. If you have a passion for wine experiences and would like more information about membership with The Wine Club, please contact us at: thewineclubspyc@gmail.com

The Golf Club at SPYC March outing was held at Lansbrook Golf Club in Palm Harbor. We had so many attendees that we were able to have a separate women’s and men’s flight for this outing. Congratulations to the first-place winners for the women’s flight at two over par: Bekah Rush, Marion Whetzel, and Julie Murray.

We have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled the continents on motorcycles together. The Riders Club at SPYC welcomes you to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride. The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious.

This year we have riding events planned for the Colorado Rockies and Sturgis SD, Western NC including part of TN, GA and SC. If you seldom ride or ride a lot, please join us. You’ll be glad you did! The spirit of friendship and community is second to none.

To join our group and to keep updated with our events, please contact: James Irwin at: JamesIrwin1231@gmail.com

The Second-place winners for the women’s flight at three over par were Kimberlie Bowers, Ann Johnson, and Susan Arsenault. The First-place winners for the men’s flight at five under par were Paul Murray, David Bowers, Kevin Sidow, and Tim Holly. Second-place winners for the men’s flight at one under par went to John Arsenault, Josh Whetzel, John Rodgers, and Al Canino. The closest to the pin were Josh Whetzel (Hole 7), Martin Morris (Hole 11), and Bekah Rush (Hole 17). Our second annual overnight trip will take place at Mission Inn at Howie on the Hills on May 22nd & 23rd.

During the summer months, many snowbirds travel north and the rainy season ascends upon us. We plan to meet for a summer outing at Top Golf in St. Pete and reconvene with monthly meetings and outings in September. Please direct all future membership inquiries for the Golf Group at SPYC to Bekah Rush at rush.rebekah@gmail.com or meet us in person at one of our monthly meetings.

Our last monthly social meeting before September will be held on Tuesday, June 9th at 6:00 pm in the Downtown Clubhouse. Check the marquis sign at the front entrance for the specific room location. Meetings also include a 50/50 raffle, planning future outings, fun games and prizes, guest speakers, and general golf camaraderie. Many members also stay after the meeting to have dinner together at the grill or the tiki bar.
