COMMODORE’S LOG D

ear SPYC Members, Greetings St. Pete Yacht Club members, and welcome to our May/June issue of Smooth Sailing! We certainly have a full schedule of activities for you over the coming months, and I hope you have a chance to mark your calenders and participate in the fun. April was a very busy month of sailing highlighted with the Pennington Cup, the 65th anniversary of the Thistle Class, the Laser Class Midwinters East, and the Pusser’s Rum Cup. Don’t forget, Friday evenings, we have the Twilight Series - Sign-up and go sailing! The 51st Regata del Sol al Sol Race to Mexico kicked off with a fun-filled street party on April 21st, with the race starting the next day. See the next issue (July/August) for the article with photos and the award ceremony details. A terrific job was done putting together one of the largest action packed Commodore’s Cruises this year by Fleet Captains Kevin & Susan Cross. This annual cruise, held March 25th to April 9th, made its way from St. Pete to Marco Island stopping at many FCYC clubs on the West Coast. Several cruisers continued to Key West, using 16 marinas. Mary and I attended the fun at South Seas and Pink Shell Resorts. My salute to Kevin, Susan, and all the Port Captains making the cruise and each stop very fun for all cruisers. See full details and photos in this issue. On March 26th, Alex Deininger, Powerboat Competition Captain and her committee, held the first in a series of very informative boating safety classes. This class was given by Club member Bob Arrington, assisted by his wife Dorie, and I promise you everyone learned something. I enjoyed the

class and whether you’re a beginner or experienced sail or power boater, I highly recommend all Club boaters attend future Club sponsored classes. Hopefully you were able to attend the annual Easter Buffet and had a great time. As usual, Chef Joseph put out a fabulous array of delicious food which everyone enjoyed. The day’s highlight was watching the children look for Easter eggs in the park next to the Club. What fun they and the onlookers had! Each year, both clubhouses close for an Annual Shutdown.During this time, your staff gets their vacation and the facility gets a deep cleaning . Shutdown dates

for both clubhouses can be found on page 11. Summer wouldn't be Summer without our 4th of July Party! Details are on the back cover and I am sure you and the family will have a fantastic time - make your reservations soon! Finally, thank you for reading my Commodore's Log each month, and as a token of gratitude for those that do, stop by the front desk on Tuesday, May 17th between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm for a special treat. Fair winds and calm seas,

Bill Waters, Commodore

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. MAY/JUNE 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

GENERAL MANAGER’S LOG 55

General Manager’s Log

I

by: Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM

can’t believe summer is just around the corner, we have blown through our Regatta and busy season so rapidly. With all the unprecedented times we have faced over the last few years time sure hasn’t stood still. I am now in my 10th month and encouraged with the changes that have been made in such a short time, and I am really looking forward to what the future holds. I want to congratulate the Membership Committee and Corey Hall, our Director of Member Relations, for the incredible work that was put in with the influx of new members over the last several months. We live in a different time today than we did a year ago, and with that, there are different needs as well. We just approved and invited to this great Club over 100 new members since March. This is a big number, and we are seeing tremendous usage from these new members and welcome them all. Reservations – Please try and honor the location where you have made a reservation, and if you decide to dine in another outlet of the Club, please notify your original reservation location. If you are unable to keep your reservation, please contact us as soon as possible. It will permit us to offer a greater choice of time and size of party to your fellow members. A fee of $10.00/pp will be assessed for "no shows" which will compensate the staff that was assigned to your table reservation. Parking Garage - Membership privilege regarding the parking garage states the following: “Parking Garage is available for members and their guest only when using the Club facilities. Any member found to be abusing these rules and privileges will be warned in writing by management and is subject to discipline by the Board of Directors.” For complete hours of operation and current policies, please refer to the ‘Parking Policy & Parking Decals document posted online www.spyc.org under ‘Member Central – Club Information'. I recently had the privilege to attend the ICOYC conference in New Orleans at the Southern Yacht Club. ICOYC

“International Council of Yacht Clubs”, which is a group of Leading International and American Yacht Clubs, working together and sharing experiences. Their objectives are – the development and encouragement of fellowship and interactivity among Member Yacht Clubs – the discussion of topics of mutual interest to Member Yacht Clubs – the delivery of increased benefits to members of ICOYC Member Yacht Clubs. What sets this group apart from other organizations like CMAA “Club Manager Association of America” and the FCYC “Florida Council of Yacht Clubs” is that these are all historic clubs with historic sailing heritages across the world. The most gratifying aspect of the conference to me was the interaction between managers like myself and the delegates from all these Clubs acting as one. Our application is in for membership, and I look forward to SPYC becoming a member of ICOYC and hosting a conference here at our Club. Strategic Plan and Master Plan – The month of May will be a big month of planning and rolling plans out. The Strategic Plan will be rolled out to the membership by the end of May via email with a true roll out and update of the Master Plan at our Annual Meeting in October. We will also be conducting our first kick-off meeting for our Master Plan in late May. This is a big deal and one of the biggest undertakings the Club has taken on in some time. With the influx of new members and the usage habits we’ve been experiencing it’s time for this historic Club to look itself in the mirror and see what it can truly be in the years ahead. To better deliver the exceptional member delight that is needed in today’s competitive market. In closing, hurricane season is just around the corner so please go through your hurricane plan and be prepared well in advance. I look forward to seeing everyone in the coming months as I make my way around our various facilities.

Cheers

O

Junior Sailing Update

by Todd Fedyszyn, Youth Sailing Director

ver the weekend of April 2nd-3rd our SPYC High School sailors competed in the SAISA District Fleet Racing Championship hosted by Eckerd College. SPYC was the only Yacht Club with two schools represented in the 15-boat fleet. Teams qualified based on their overall standing in the SAISA South Points Series for the 2021-2022 school year. Shorecrest finished in 4th place overall with Guthrie Braun and Rosie Simpson taking the overall win in the “A Division”. Sidney Moyer and Dorothy Mendelblatt sailed a strong regatta finishing as the top all female team in the A Division as well. The teams of Bella Shakespeare, Zack O’Connor, and Ethan Danielson with Kate Danielson and Ainsley Braun sailed in the B division. Over the weekend of April 9th-10th, the SPYC Junior Sailing Team made the trip to Sarasota to compete in the annual Sailfest Regatta. SPYC was well represented with 40 sailors competing in the Laser, Opti RWB, and Opti Green Fleets. In the 81 boat Opti RWB fleet John Hartney was our top performer in 2nd place overall followed by Blake Vincent in 3rd and Chris Shaffer in 6th. SPYC’s Thomas Weidner also took home 1st overall in the Opti White Fleet. In the 23 boat Laser Radial Fleet, SPYC’s Callen Burnett finished in 4th overall followed by Preston Weaver in 5th and Anthony Smart in 6th. Sophia Fuller was our top finished in the 25 boat Laser 4.7 Fleet in 8th overall. Our SPYC Green Fleet showed that hard work is paying off with all sailors posting improved scores throughout the weekend. Our top performer was Tucker Gowens in 16th overall. SPYC was well represented at the USODA Team Race Midwinters hosted by the Sarasota Yacht Club. Opti Team Racing is exciting as Yacht Clubs compete against one another in a 4v4 format with the team scoring the lowest points at the finish of a quick and intense 6-minute race. SPYC was represented by Chris Shaffer, Ryder Ellis, Gloria Privis, Dominic Seabold, and Blake Vincent on Team 1 and Adam and Reid Mendelblatt, Bennett Lamb, Talon Schenk, and Jad Aberdrabbo on Team 2. The SPYC Summer Sailing Camp is just around the corner and spots are filling up fast. Please be sure to check www. sailstpete.org or give us call at (727) 822-3113 for more information.

he Yachting Recognition Awards were held on March 29th in the Ballroom of the Downtown Clubhouse. The social hour included cocktails, appetizers, numerous photo boards along the north wall showcasing 70 years of Salty Sister’s activities, and a slide show of Race Committee photos on the west wall. A little over 200 members and guests were in attendance.

Close to 80 recipients were recognized from our Junior Sailors, High School, Collegiate, Professional, One-Design, and Offshore Sailors. The volunteers of the Race Committee, especially Twilight Race Officer Gloria Davis, received lots of applause, and our Cruising Fleet showcased a member making a 4,500 NM journey. Congratulations to all the recipients for your ambassadorship of SPYC around the world! A big thanks to the Yachting Recognition Committee chaired by Trisha Birkenstock.

We applauded Ed Baird’s 2021 induction into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame. The America’s Cup Hall of Fame turns "30" this year and a dinner on April 28th at the New York Yacht Club took place, where Ed Baird was formally recognized. (Due to Covid restrictions last year Ed was unable to attend the induction in Auckland.)

We also celebrated the lifetime contributions of Dick Funsch and Gene Hinkel with the Commodore’s Award, including short videos and presentations.

Power BOAT

Competition T by Alex Deininger

he Power Boat Competition hosted a "Suddenly in Charge" boating safety seminar, on Saturday, March 26th. There were about 35 participants who enjoyed an hour presentation covering various topics, followed by 5 breakout sessions. The presentation was given by new member, Bob Arrington, who brings an immense amount of knowledge to the club. He covered topics including radio communication, docking, and safety devices. We were fortunate to have several other volunteers, including a group from Eckerd’s student volunteer maritime search and rescue team, EC-SAR. The Eckerd students introduced the members to their free water rescue service, and also ran an interactive knot tying station.

MAY/JUNE 2022 | SMOOTH SAILING

Joe Frohock covered rules of the road, Bob Arrington had a vast display of safety devices, and Chuck Goes shared his expertise in reading charts. A huge thank you to all of the volunteers that made this event a great success. Keep an eye out for future boating education courses in the future.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AROUND THE NEXT BEND...

by Angela Kowalik, Wagon Master

I

t’s coming on summer time, and everyone is planning big trips. The fuel situation isn’t stopping us! Some are going out west, some to the northeast, and some…as far north & west we can go. RV travel provides for a flexible vacation, not worrying about a hotel each night, and gives complete freedom and spontaneity. Many people have told us they’ve thought about it, dreamt about it, and wished they would have traveled around our great nation in an RV. Is today your someday? If you’ve thought about it, you should do it! So that’s why, at our next face-to-face meeting on May 3rd at 11:30 am for lunch where we’ll be talking about all of our summer plans before everyone heads out on their great summer adventure. After that, our next meeting will be sometime in the fall. Enjoy!

ollowing on from our Vintage Classic Car Show in February we have finally reconciled all our accounts, paid our bills and now we were ready to disburse funds to our two chosen charities. For those who missed this the charities are The Kind Mouse and the Louise Graham Regeneration Center. This was a great result not just for the charities but for the entire Club. Thanks to some very generous members we hope that this year members will continue to help these wonderful local efforts, and that SPYC can reinforce itself as a foundation of giving back. For the record we donated over $10,000 this year! Should any member wish to make further donations you can contact me at (727) 310-5981. For more information you can check the link on our Car Show page at: http://www.stpetecarshow. com/charities.html

2022 COMMODORE'S CRUISE 22

CRUISING

FLEET

Legacy Cookout

by Kevin Cross, Fleet Captain

I

am writing this as our 2022 Commodore’s Cruise is nearing the end. What a fabulous time! Thirty-three boats participated with over 70 cruisers, 11 dogs, 3 cats, and one bird! We visited 8 ports, 15 marinas, and traveled some 300 nautical miles. Thanks to the planning and creativity of our 10 Port Directors, each day was unique and fun. Friendships were strengthened, knowledge of SW Florida’s waterways, clubs and marinas were gained, and memories made.

Mike & Debbi Young

Highlights included the Bradenton market; dining and shopping on St. Armand’s Circle in Sarasota; paddleboarding, kayaking, and bicycling in Venice; the Fleet’s Annual Croquet tournament and golf carting at South Seas; nature walk, kayak, and banana boat trip with Ranger Rob at Pink Shell; peace and quiet at lovely St Charles YC; walking history, distillery, and Ford/Edison tours in Fort Myers; pickleball, pool, and shopping in Punta Gorda; and, boat trips to Cabbage Key and Cayo Costa with long walks and sunsets on beautiful Useppa Island. And, of course, there was no end of “docktails” and delicious meals. Special treats included Joe and Camille’s latte bar, Heber and Barbara’s mimosa and Bloody Mary bar, docktails aboard Mac n’ Rice III, cookouts and potluck dinners at Legacy and Useppa complete with adult s’mores (ask Chris Roddey) and the very best sunsets. Musicians at Mattison’s Grille and King’s Kitchen and the old-time juke box at Charlotte Harbor YC entertained us. What fun!!! None of this would be possible without our dedicated Port Directors. Huge thanks to Bob & Juli Frazee, Kevin & Debbie Hopper, Joe Petrella & Camille Iurillo, Heber & Barbara Weller, Jack Rice & Kelly Lee McFrederick, Mike & Debbi Young, Bob & Geri Russell, Ben & Chris Roddey, Garry & Pam Haas, and Keith & Laura Gibson. Thanks for the memories! Join our monthly meeting on May 5th (sign up online or through catering) for more Commodore’s Cruise highlights and information on upcoming cruises. hat a wonderful Ladies Beach Club year! We gained new members and made new friends while having a lot of fun. A huge thank you goes out to the outgoing Board members and their assistants – they all stood up to the challenges presented by COVID-19; if anything, the challenges made us stronger and more determined to promote and grow the Ladies Beach Club. Hats off to you all! A special thanks goes to Eva Hefner; not only was she President from 2015 to 2017 but she served a Immediate Past-president for five years. It’s safe to say Eva is truly part of the backbone of the LBC. With the new Board of Directors in place led by Angela Kowalik as President, I’m betting next year will be even more exciting! Dues are going to $32.00 per year but renewing members who pay before June 1st will skate in at the $30.00 rate so if you haven’t already, get those 2022 – 2023 dues paid now. September 2022 will bring a new round of inspiring and entertaining programs but we will be active over the summer playing Mah Jongg and, I hear there is a possibility of some planned outings – stay tuned! If you aren’t yet a member of the LBC but want to join us for Mah Jongg and other exciting events and worth every penny!! Contact Helle Getz our new membership chair or email me for the details. The form for new members can be found online www.spyc.org under "Clubs Within the Club."

For more information send me an email: (patsywarmack@tampabay.rr.com) Hope to see you at the beach!!

That area plus a five stand shooting venue provided ample opportunity to practice and showcase skills and offer sharp yet good natured criticism of your buddies skills. That part of the trip was a hoot. Six old houses provide a rustic experience for overnight guests and the main lodge provided space for group dining, as well as spirited socializing.

hile not exactly Golden Pond, Boggy Pond Plantation in Moultrie, GA is still a pretty nice place as long as you can handle rustic accommodations. Thirteen Wing Shooters enjoyed two days of quail hunting, target shooting, good hearty food, and camaraderie. Our guides and their well trained dogs found plenty of birds for us to bring home. Our shots were on target thanks to the weekly Friday morning target shoots which have honed that skill. The great folks at Boggy Pond took good care of us. We didn’t suffer too much. On Boggy Pond there is a wide dock equipped with a wobble trap and big spot lights.

Our Wing Shooter Society monthly dinner meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month. Those wishing to join are encouraged to contact our new Grand Marshall - Frank Robinson at fhr506@gmail.com SMOOTH SAILING | MAY/JUNE 2022
