COMMODORE’S LOG D

ear SPYC Members, I’m very happy to begin the September Commodore’s Log by announcing that we have a new General Manager. Rhett J. Robicheaux is now the leader of our SPYC staff team. Please introduce yourselves to him and give him a warm welcome! In other very important news, a survey is being conducted to guide our new strategic plan. Please make sure to complete the survey, when it arrives, as it will have a tremendous influence on the direction our club takes to enhance your membership experience. It is very important that every member completes the survey. Please mark your calendars for our Annual Meeting and Board of Directors Election, which will take place on October 12th. We have a great slate of candidates, who are all highly qualified to serve as club leaders. Plan to attend our Meet the Candidates Nights on Tuesday, September 28th & Tuesday, October 5th at 5:00 pm in the Heritage Lounge. Come out for Happy Hour and support the new candidates running in the 2021-2022 Board of Directors Election. Just as last year, members are able to vote up to two weeks prior to the election, by mail or in person at the Club. In-person voting will be available on the day of the election. We hope for a great voter turn-out!

The Club has some amazing events lined up. Don’t miss out on the fun! Complete details are listed in this issue: .The Match Game Show ~ Saturday, September 18th .SPYC Kids Laser Tag Party ~ Saturday, September 18th .SPYC Speakeasy ~ Saturday, September 25th .Fall Family Carnival ~ Sunday, October 17th .Dueling Pianos Show! ~ Saturday, October 23rd .Commodore’s Ball - Saturday, November 13th Regatta season is back in full swing. For a complete list of upcoming Regattas, and the NOR’s, members can visit www.spyc.org/regattas. Here are a few happening soon: .St. Petersburg Classic (Sept. 11th) .Bruce Watters Green Fleet Regatta (Sept. 18-19) .St. Petersburg Yacht Club Championships (Oct. 2nd) .Fall Bay Race/Ted Irwin Memorial (Oct. 9th) Speaking of regattas, I am happy to report that our SPYC Masters Team Racing Team (Kai Cox, Jody Abrams, A.L. Braun, Matt Braun, Mitchell Rogers, Susan Wallace, Bill Icely, Joe Froehock, Frank McCarthy, Mike Funsch and your Commodore) just returned from competing in the Hinman Masters Team Race at New York Y.C. The Doyle Family graciously hosted us for housing, which was much appreciated. We learned a great deal, had fun, made new friends and look forward to representing the club at future events.

There are many improvements underway around our facilities: The clubhouse at Pass-a-Grille will be partially shut down to allow for improvements, but the pool and limited outdoor service will be available. At the Sailing Center, with our 20 year lease official, we are making up-grades which will enhance our abilities to enjoy sailing. Last, but not least, Happy Labor Day! The Heritage Lounge will be improved with plans underway to Respectfully, remodel the bathrooms and replace the chairs. Our Main Clubhouse Pool Deck recieved attention and work began in August to refurbish this structure. David Mendelblatt, Commodore

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. SEPTEMBER 2021 | SMOOTH SAILING

SPECIAL INTRODUCTION! 55

SPYC’s New General Manager Welcome, Rhett J. Robicheaux!

D

ear Members, I am privileged with this extraordinary opportunity to serve as General Manager of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. I look forward to meeting each one of you as I join the SPYC family and call St. Petersburg home. My wife Susan and I are moving down here as empty nesters, except for our two dogs Beaux and Stella, as our three children are all off making a living or attending College. Their support, patience, and understanding allow me to be the man I am today and because of them I am here. As I sit and write this article on my first day after a great final tour from Marc, I am pleased with what I have observed at this point. We have an extraordinary Club here with many moving parts and the key will be consistency in all areas. As I continue to get settled in and learn the culture at SPYC there is one area that stands out, and that being the management team and their committment to you, the Membership. I will diligently work with the Club’s Leadership and all department heads to make sure we are all on the same course moving ahead and that we observe, acknowledge, and react to all opportunities.

I have a lot to learn about the Club and your support and constructive comments will help me in enhancing the member experience. With that said, I welcome all feedback. I am at your service, and you will see a lot of me. So please do not hesitate to stop by and say hello...I’m looking forward to it. It is again my pleasure to be aboard this extraordinary Club with such wonderful members, staff, tradition, and history. My goal is simple – to be the catalyst of the continuation of making the St. Petersburg Yacht Club one of America’s Top Yacht Clubs and carrying on the great traditions and camaraderie this Club has fostered over the years. I look forward to seeing each one of you around one of our three facilities. Cheers, Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM General Manager, COO

Thank You for being a valued Member!

Yachting Information Committee by Donna Sue Marks, Yachting Information Chair

s the Olympics closed last month, we only have 3 years to wait until the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris: July 26-August 11, 2024. The USA Sailing Team of 13 Olympians, though competitive on the world stage, did not garner any podium results.

SPYC has had many Laser Champions and future ones for us to celebrate. One such member and Laser Sailor, Tim Landt, attended the European Laser Master July 23-29, 2021 in Gargnano, Italy. He shared this photo as he is port tacking the fleet at the start. He is #199921 USA. BRAVO Tim!

They represented the USA well while navigating through pandemic-related changes that impacted their training, performance development, and lives. We look forward to what the future holds for the USA Sailing Team. The 2024 Olympic sailing events will now comprise five events involving foiling classes, and four of those will be using boards, not boats. The boat we will continue to see in 2024 is the Laser. Bruce Kirby, whose original Laser sketch entered sailing lore as the “million-dollar doodle”, was 92 when he died on July 19, 2021. This low-slung fiberglass dinghy became known as the Laser. The boat first sold at the 1971 NY Boat Show. The Laser nearly 14 feet long, 130 lbs fiberglass hull, and aluminum mast cost $695 at that time.

While Olympics are still fresh on our minds… take a stroll down the main hall to the South Entrance. Just outside the Quarterdeck Room on the wall to your left is a series of pictures under the plaque—Hall of Champions. Please read on.

*

From these pictures you will catch a glimpse of some of the rich history of SPYC Champions: L-R: PC Pat Seidenspinner—1st female PRO for an Olympics; Allison Jolly & Lynne Jewell —first women to win a Gold medal in sailing at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea; JP Creignou winning a Bronze Medal in the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece; Jennifer French & JP Creignou’s Silver win in 2012’s Paralympics in Weymouth, England; a brief list of Mark Mendelblatt's triumphs; Not pictured is Dr. John Ross Dugan who won the Bronze in the 1996 Paralympics. There are many untold Champions among us!

hat is a Poker Run? A Poker Run is not a race. It’s a Club tradition and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters in the SPYC. On Poker Run Day, boaters meet at the Club docks and show off thier well-curated boat themes. Upon arriving at the Club they will check-in and recieve a nautical map that will chart their path of adventure for the day. The map includes 5-8 different stops in which the boaters will travel to and collect a poker chip at each stop. The stops are a combination of gracious member’s waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats are tasked with visiting all the stops in the time allotted. Upon returning to the Club, each participant will turn in their tokens for poker cards and play a 5-Card Poker hand! Prizes are awarded for the Best Hand, Best Boat Theme, and Best Dock Stop. It is always fun to see what everyone comes up with!

CRUISING

FLEET

Dressing of the Fleet

by Col. Willy Bain, Fleet Captain

Welcome Aboard!!! …

T

he Cruising Fleet celebrated the 4th of July in true fashion. The three-day event began with the “Dressing” of the Fleet. A holiday tradition of displaying a “rainbow” of signal flags and pennants arrayed from stem to stern.

Our Port Directors (Camille Iurillo & Joe Petrella) arranged for a fun filled three days. Following the Fleet’s arrival, our Fleet gathered for Port Directors cocktails and dinner at the Yacht Club for all to socialize and give thanks for the courageous efforts of our American forefathers in the establishment of a free and independent Nation. Forty-Five cruisers were in attendance and resulting in a great kick-off to our weekend.

Saturday began with a bike ride with a breakfast stop at “Munchies” that fortunately completed just prior to a typical July down pour. With the afternoon free, the Fleet gather that night at the Lure Restaurant for Sushi and Tapas. The food and service were excellent and the owner, being friends with our Port Directors, treated us to a special presentation of appetizers, which certainly supported their reputations as one of St. Petersburg’s finest restaurants.

Sunday included “Camille’s and Joe’s” breakfast barista with a variety of lattes followed by a tour of Raymond James Museum. The Club provided a 4th of July free dinner of hamburgers and hotdogs. Sunset was followed by wonderful fireworks with several boats playing patriot music. Once again, a great cruise with friends and family!

Cruisers on the town

In August we held our Monthly Luncheon, which included a presentation by Micah Thompson, President of “Gulf to Bay Divers”, on the various challenges of boat bottom cleaning & bottom paint.

SALTY SISTERS by Carol Hansen

I

n the fall of 1951, under the guidance of W.W. “Doc” Jennings, a group of 10 women, all of them wives of St. Petersburg Yacht Club members, formed what is now believed to be the first organized women’s sailing group in the nation, known as the Salty Sisters. The group’s objective was to learn the principles of sailing and to sail small boats, every Wednesday afternoon, after lunch at the Yacht Club.

1964: British Royal Navy vessel, HMS Berwick, came into port with a sailing team that promptly challenged the Salty Sisters to a three-race battle. It is said that this was a regular event with her Majesty’s vessels. The story goes that British sailors lived up to their reputation as gentlemen, letting the Salty Sisters remain undefeated.

The original ten founding members were Eleanor Ellis, Betty Jennings, Dotty Lang, Joyce McEvoy, Mary Jane Misener, Margie Peterson, Joey Powell, Ruth Rifley, June Schowe, and Phyllis Shaver.

Fall of 1973: Fran Weaver-Nohren and Ardith Rutland spearheaded the formation of the Women’s Interclub Council whose mission was “to promote women’s interclub racing in Florida.” This group would become the present Florida Women’s Sailing Association. Fran Weaver-Nohren was the first President and Ardith Rutland was the second.

Membership originally was limited to wives of members of SPYC. In 1956, this qualification was amended to include any female member of the Yacht Club age 21 or older. At first, racing took place in 8-foot Hagerty Sea Shell prams, which were later replaced by Optimist-class Prams. As the women became more proficient, they sailed in the club-owned 22-foot gaff-rigged Fish Class sloops, later replaced first by Rhodes19 sloops then later by Ideal 18s.

Many members of the Saltys are accomplished sailors in their own right in many other kinds of boats. They participate in regional, national, and international regattas at all levels. Salty’s spouses, known as Briny Brothers, are often (but not always) part of the mix. But it’s not all serious business, Salty Sisters are well known for their fun too!!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY SALTY SISTERS!!!

Throughout the years, the Salty Sisters have sailed Flying Juniors, O’Day Sprites, Flying Scots, Snipes, Sunfish, 420s, and Sonars. With the Sprites, spinnakers were first introduced, and they continue to be part of Salty sailing in all boats equipped with them. Over the years, sailing became a morning activity, followed by lunch at the Yacht Club. On occasion, as many as 60 to 70 women have participated on the water, sometimes having to wait for a boat to become available. 1958: The Salty Sisters began sailing against other women’s sailing clubs from neighboring yacht clubs. These groups followed the Salty’s lead by organizing sailing groups within their own clubs with colorful nautical names.

Our program chairwoman Helle Getz and her assistants are party planners extraordinaire, so you’ll want to be in attendance. I hear we can expect a speakeasy venue! The clubhouse closing will not impede our weekly Monday afternoon Mah Jongg play. What would Monday be without lunch and Mah Jongg? Watch your email for the September location. Any LBC member who would like to play or learn to play Mah Jongg should contact Sharon Mehok at: sherronm@verizon.net, and she’ll get you on the distribution list.

ere’s what a few of our members have been up to this summer:

In June, Barbara & Howie Mednick attended the first gathering of the FCYC Land Cruisers held at River Ranch RV Resort. The next gathering will be in October. Ken & Corrine St. Jean visited the Newmar “mothership” in Nappanee, Indiana and made quite a journey out of it enjoying beaches, memorials, caverns, and nature—our beautiful and bountiful country. They went as far as Michigan, traveling over 4,000 RV miles in those 2 months. On the way back they spent a few days in Gatlinburg/Smoky Mountains enjoying fabulous scenic and often scary winding switchback roads like “Tail of the Dragon” before heading home.

Howie & Barbara Mednick (center) join fellow FCYC Land Cruisers

These are just a few of our adventures. Consider joining us at our upcoming club meeting on October 5th (at the Downtown Clubhouse), or joining fellow FCYC Land Cruisers on October 21st-25th at Keystone Heights RV Resort. To join the group and keep up with our events, where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik at: koalafam@tampabay.rr.com

John Lenhart and Yvonne Le Fleur went out west to New Mexico, traveling along the Rio Grande in the valley. Using the Santa Fe Black Canyon Campground as a base camp in the Santa Fe National Forrest, they hiked and explored the Red River and enjoyed the town in the Carson National Forrest. They might be back by now. My husband Brian and I met up with Rick & Sarah Moseley in Hermosa, South Dakota where we explored the Black Hills. We visited the Badlands and Custer State Park, and a trip to Mount Rushmore (see our traveling burgee!) before heading to Gillette Wyoming for the 103rd FMCA International Expo. Later we rendezvoused in Cody, Wyoming and dined at the infamous Buffalo Bill Irma Hotel before heading separate directions for further exploration.

ony Bond is a local high school football star that was too small and too slow for the next level (his words). He went to USF with a dream to be a football coach. Since he didn’t land a full ride he needed a job to pay for school. He started selling cars and worked his way through school. By the time he received his diploma, Tony had fallen in love with the auto industry. You might know about the 3445 Car Store or Motor Credit Corporation. Both are local businesses started by Tony. Both are great stories worth your time. He did very well and retired in 2018. A few years back Tony starting shooting trap and recently joined the Wing Shooters. Trap is a more disciplined shooting sport than the sporting clays the Wing Shooters enjoy. Trap target presentation is regulated and uniform all across the country.

Targets always fly the same direction and speed across an open expanse of ground. Most importantly you need to be quiet throughout the round as a curtesy to the other shooters. A sporting clays day with the Wing Shooters is a more rambunctious endeavor. That’s a characteristic found in our monthly meetings and Friday shoots. However being a talented lineman that played both ways, Tony fits right in. Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters Society are encouraged to contact Gene Collins at: genebcollins@hotmail.com | or (727) 385-4878

REACHERS by Carol Hansen

T

he Broad Reachers are excited about the upcoming sailing season. Last year was cut short because of Covid and the installation of the wonderful new dock. We’re expecting the return of the Prams in early September from their summer fun at the Sailing Center. Back in June, the Broads held their Annual Meeting and elected the following officers for the upcoming 2021-2022 season: Captain Charl Hadfield; Sailing Captain Suzanne Boohar; Secretary Carin Koros & Katie Rodgers; Treasurer Carol Hansen; and Interclub Captain Mary Moosbrugger, with Gloria Davis as FWSA Second Delegate & Katie Rodgers as Alternate Delegate.

RIDERS CLUB by Bob Frazee

I

t has been a quiet summer for the Riders Club. Between having many members heading north, for some or all of the summer months, and the threat of rain nearly every day we did not get to do a lot of riding in the past couple of months.

Commodore Lucas Trophy Sailing

Our first big event this year will be the Commodore Lucas Regatta to be held on October 15th. We will be inviting representatives from eight other FWSA member Clubs each to send two sailors to compete in this exciting race. This year we will be sailing in the memory of Spencer Lucas who passed away late last year and has sponsored this race for many years. Spencer’s wife, Alice, will be joining us this year to present the trophy. The Broad Reachers invite and encourage women members of SPYC to join us at Pass-a-Grille on Saturday mornings, as we sail for fun and work on our sailing and racing skills. There is no such thing as “too little” experience to join the Broad Reachers. We’ll help you learn and have fun doing it! Our Saturday morning sails are usually followed by lunch at the Club. Contact Carol Hansen (carol@dband1.com) for more information. Upcoming event: Broad Reachers 50th Anniversary Celebration!! More details to come.

We left the major roads and traveled some very interesting back roads with great scenery, lots of wildlife, and lots of curves. Bunker Hill and Grange Hall roads were particularly enjoyable. Eventually we wound up on CR 674 E to Fort Lonesome, where we made a quick stop. From there we took FL39 N toward Lithia.

We do have a couple of new members in the Riders Club. Al Canino joined us a few months ago and PJ Ryan joined in June. A hearty welcome to both of you!

Then to Jamison, Virgil Hall, and Browning roads, which lead us to CR672 S and CR674 W to Wimauma where we picked up CR579 S. Next we took Safford Road to US 301 S, then west on Moccasin Wallow Road to us 41N ending at Popi’s Place. After breakfast we headed back from Parrish on US41 S to I275 N back into St. Petersburg.

One ride we did manage was a Saturday morning ride to Popi’s Place in Port Manatee for breakfast. Our route began on I275 S >> I75 N >>FL 683 E >> US301 S, to FL 62 E.

If anyone is interested in joining us for a ride, or would like more information about the Riders Club, please contact Bob Frazee at (315) 420-7114 or email: rfrazee@cazequip.com.

lenty of breezes, shade, and cold towels made a perfect day for golf at the Pasadena Yacht & Country Club on Tuesday, July 20th. Many thanks to Theresa Matthews, a former member of our group, for hosting us at her club. We had a great showing, twenty-one players; ten ladies and eleven men. A 9:00 am shotgun start kept our scramble right on time at four hours. Lunchtime was delightful on a covered deck cooled by fans and overlooking the course and marina. We hope to be able to play there again next summer. “Top Golf” was our next stop on August 24th. This is an indoor venue, a bar, and grill scene with a golf-group-skill-teambonding experience. Pics and details will be listed next month. We welcome more new players to our group: Jennifer Kard, Jerilyn Rush, and Bekah Rush.
