Our Beach Club will have their shutdown, September 6th - 14th, reopening September 15th. While closed, the staff take their vacations, the building receives a deep cleaning, and the kitchen receives more extensive work and cleaning. Speaking of Pass-a-Grille, Saturday, October 15th will be the Annual SPYC Poker Run at PAG. This event is always a load of fun and a very popular event for the membership. Small run-a-bouts to large center console boats are welcome to register! Get your crew together, pick a theme, and sign up for the event-- prizes will be awarded. The Poker Run is sponsored by our Powerboat Competition Committee. Details are in this issue, or you can contact this year’s Committee Chairman, Chris Waters at (727) 580-2064.

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

During the shutdown, Rhett and his staff accomplished a great deal. The Ship’s Locker has been updated, carpets have been cleaned, paint has been touched-up, and extensive updates occurred in the kitchen areas. Great news! A new Tiki Kitchen, adjacent to the Tiki Bar, is now open! This will help to improve service times for the ever-popular Tiki Bar.

looking forward to seeing all of you enjoying the activities at your Club!

I hope you are enjoying your summer, and I’d like to welcome you back to the Downtown Clubhouse after the annual shutdown.

In the previous issues of Smooth Sailing, I hoped to report good news regarding our new marina...and I’m able to do just that! We have finally received all our important ‘approved permits’ and will be sending out RFPs (Request For Proposals) to marina construction firms soon. Through careful planning, professional guidance, and a little luck, it appears that the project may be a full year ahead of the original schedule. Depending on a construction start date, we may have our new marina completed before the end of

2. For those clubs that have an Annual Capital Charge the same question was asked. 0-5% 52 clubs responded, and at 20% 10 clubs responded. The remaining clubs had increases between 5% and 20% telling us that almost 100% of clubs that have an annual capital charge will be raising it.

3. Have you had an increase in Initiation Fees in the last two years? 0-5% 20 clubs responded, 25-50% 35 clubs responded and over 50% 16 clubs responded. This tells us 54.83% of clubs had significant increase.

The Club is in a good financial position and as we need to be very diligent, planning for the future, we also need not sit back and ride out the storm. We need to continue the forward thinking that has come out of our Strategic Plan. We are moving forward with a Master Plan as the future needs of this Club are real and we must stay ahead of that. We live in a world of change, and the Club is no different, as we are facing change in our culinary operation with the departure of our Executive Chef Joseph Van Bemmel. Joseph has been with the Club for about 8 years and has done a great job over his tenure here. Joseph has accepted a new position with our local school system teaching culinary arts to culinary students. We wish Joseph nothing but the best in his new endeavor and thank him for his service with the SPYC.

elcome Back Members! To those staff members who have taken a well-deserved break; we look forward to your newfound energy as we re-open and plan for the fall. As Commodore has mentioned, we have been very busy at the downtown facility with several in house projects which were mostly behind the scenes. Furthermore, we installed new IT wiring for the point-of-sale equipment to improve performance and a new cabinet to store our computer server in the accounting offices. This is also the time of year to reflect on all the great things we have accomplished as well as those areas we can improve upon. The building blocks - it’s the little things that make the impact and difference. As we prepare to set sail in this final stretch of 2022, we continue our commitment to serving the needs of our entire membership while incorporating fun filled, affordable, and diverse activities for all to enjoy. Last month the Florida Chapter of CMAA partnered with Club Benchmarking and conducted a very quick poll of influences that are affecting the preparations for 2023 budgets. I’d like to share some of the findings, which were no surprise. Here are several of the questions asked with the responses coming from 95 clubs around Florida.

5. Food and Beverage cost are seeing the biggest hit with rising wages and overall rising cost on almost every food item in the kitchen. 84 of the 95 clubs responding 13% was the average increase in payroll across the board. One of the final questions

asked was, "have you cut back on Capital Spending in the upcoming year?" An overwhelming response 92.05% representing 81 clubs said NO.

Cheers Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCM General Manager, COO

The annual meeting will take place October 11th! This is an event you will not want to miss as we will be summarizing our Strategic Plan and unveiling to the membership where we are in the Master Planning Process. Following the Annual Meeting in late October/early November, we will be scheduling Focus Groups for the membership to chime in on the “Good, Better, Best” plans for future club updates. This will be the next phase of the Master Planning Process. There will be sign-up sheets at the Annual Meeting for the various focus groups scheduled. Stay tuned for more information on all of these items in upcoming weekly emails. In closing, there is no shortage of activities and projects coming up for the SPYC in the coming months and years ahead. Our Dock Project planning and permitting process is going extremely well and we anticipate the start of this project in early summer of 2023. I look forward to seeing each of you around our various properties!

Gene McCarthy , SPYC member since 2016, doesn’t mind. The 94 year old has sailed the famed Chicago to Mackinac Race (pronounced Mac-in-aw) 67 times, setting a new record among participants.

McCarthy has raced in his own boat, ' Island Goat Express' , many times but this year he had the honor of sailing in the cruising division on a 104’ ketch named ' Whitehawk' , longest boat in the race. The ' Whitehawk' won the Royono Trophy for first monohull boat to finish.

After 25 “Mac” races, participants qualify for the Island Goat Award granted by the Island Goats Sailing Society established by a private group in 1959. Perhaps Gene was destined to sail the “Mac” – after all his name is “Mac”Carthy! Destined or not, he certainly is a Goat (Greatest Of All Time)

The race, hosted and run by the Chicago Yacht Club (CYC), had more than 240 boats from eleven countries competing this year.

At the time this article was written, Gene was strategy planning for the annual Old Guard Regatta , which was to be held on August 10th. The “Mac” is the longest and oldest fresh water race in the world – 333 miles to be exact. For those who aren’t familiar, the “Mac” was started in 1898 and runs from Navy Pier in Chicago up Lake Michigan to the idyllic Mackinac Island located in the Straits of Mackinac.

The ”Mac” has two main divisions – “Cruisers” or “Glampers” (glamor campers) – as they are called by many who started the race July 22, 2022 and the “Racers” who started a day later in stripped down, very campy boats geared for speed.

The lunch date morphed into a two night stay at a Stockbridge BnB. The original plan was to ride our motorcycles, but the weather forecast was not great, so the Noyes’s and Russell’s drove their cars. Juli and I decided to take a chance on the weather and rode our Harley trike. We managed to stay dry the entire trip, riding to Stockbridge, and back to Cazenovia. I also did some riding in the Berkshires while in Stockbridge, finding some great secondary roads thru the scenic countryside.

ool Rendezvous in Stockbridge, MA. Before heading north, Bob & Geri Russell and Juli & I talked about meeting somewhere “cool” for lunch over the summer. Since they spend summer in Stamford, CT, and we in Cazenovia, NY, it was decided a good meeting spot would be Stockbridge, Massachusetts, in the Berkshires. While planning the trip, we invited Ray and Charlotte Noyes to join us, traveling from Laconia, NH.

We enjoyed cool weather, great meals - and shopping -in Stockbridge! The entire northeastern region of the country offers great riding in the summer and fall, with plenty of rolling hills, picturesque valleys and mountains with awesome views. We hope to plan more of these trips in coming years.

The heat has overtaken our plans to do“PopStroke”in Sarasota in August. This is the newly opened putting course and eating establishment designed by Tiger Woods in memory of his dad who taught him his early putting skills. We have opted for a visit in cooler October instead when many of our member have returned from their travels. On Thursday, September 15th we have a date at the Vinoy Golf Club for a“Welcome Back Tee up Scramble”that no one should plan to miss. Tee times will begin at 9:40 am and we will lunch at the clubhouse restaurant following play.

G LF GROUP to the Club at Cheval in Lutz with a group of twelve. On July 19th a dozen more players visited the beautiful and well maintained Pasadena Yacht and Country Club for a challenging day ending with a delicious lunch on the beautiful lanai overlooking the course.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AROUND THE NEXT BEND...

ow, would you believe it’s 3 years ago this September that we started the RV Land Cruisers here at the club. So, Happy Anniversary to the RV LC group! To commemorate our anniversary, this will be the first installment of our Epic Summer of 2022 series. Let’s get started:

More adventures await on the return trip home! To join the group and keep up with our events, where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik: SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com

Racing on the Watkins Glen RacewayInternational

In May, Angela & Brian Kowalik began their epic multi-month summer trip. After attending an FMCA Area Rally event in Tennessee in May, they headed to Rock Springs Wyoming in June as they were lucky enough to be attendees at the 50th Anniversary Tiffin Rally at the Sweetwater Events Complex. There were 650 coaches, including Class A Motorhomes, Class B, and 5th Wheels (all the models Tiffin makes) to commemorate this event. While there, many Jeep owners got together for a “Jeep Meetup Social”. Who knew Jeeps could “pose”? These were just a couple events and milestones on their journey, heading to Alaska (see our traveling burgee!) …more on that to come.

Brian & Angela SweetwaterKowalik,EventsComplex

Jeep Meetup Social

In July, Rick & Sarah Moseley and Ken & Corrine St. Jean loaded up each of their RVs for their two-month epic trip together towards the New England area. They stopped along the way in fun places like Savannah and Charleston, enjoying a trolley tour to get an historic recap of the city. Traveling with friends can be twice as fun, like recreating Forest Gump’s candy box scene at the bus stop, reminiscing about “Mayberry RFD” while visiting Andy Griffin’s hometown of Mt. Airy, indulging at Hershey’s Chocolate world in Pennsylvania, or racing around Watkins Glen International Raceway in NY!

A highlight of the 3-day weekend was a private, guided tour by the Captain and crew of the USCG cutter Resolute (WMEC-620) docked at the USCG’s South Mooring facility in St. Petersburg (although some may say the highlight was the St. Germaine cocktail served at docktails!). The Resolute, commissioned in 1966, is a Reliance-class cutter with a LOA of 210 ft 6 inches and a Beam of 34 feet. When underway with a crew of 78, its missions are primarily drug smuggling and illegal migrant interdictions as well as search and rescue. The 2-hour tour included an enthusiastic Q&A with the Captain and selected crew members and was greatly appreciated by our

elcome Back to the beach! Our first LBC program of the year is scheduled for Monday, September 19 (right after the club’s reopening), and we will be in full swing to welcome you with “A Glimpse of Pass-a-Grille History”. For more than 130 years, Pass-a-Grille has been a tourist mecca and thriving beach community. For example, did you know that in the 1930’s, St. Pete Beach and the Sunshine School (located on Pass-a-Grille) were struggling through the Great Depression so Capt. Kenneth B. Merry and some local fishermen founded a community-wide fundraiser to help support children’s education—The Fish Broil and Mullet Festival. In those dire times, an outdoor grille was made of an open fire pit and bedsprings! This Historic event continues each year to this day (although the grilles are updated!).

[L: Downtown Pass-a-Grille - Middle: Historical Fish Broil & Mullet Festival - R: Don Caesar Hotel]

The Clubhouse closing will not impede our weekly Monday afternoon Mah Jongg play. What would Monday be without lunch and Mah Jongg? Watch your email for the September location. Any LBC member who would like to play or learn to play Mah Jongg should contact Sharon Mehok at sherronm@verizon.net and she’ll get you on the distribution list.

any Wing Shooters have fled Florida for cooler climates for the summer. Not all of us. In the heat of the Florida sun, a cool day to go shooting is hard to find. It helps if the venue you pick has a course in the woods and thus shade. Throw in a light breeze and that’s as good as it gets. The only positive, not surprisingly, is a lack of crowded venues. We have a cadre that will not let stifling conditions interfere with our Friday shoot. We have five hard core Wing Shooters that shoot nearly every week and another half dozen that will join in as domestic obligations permit. In the undeterrable category you can count Jim Montgomery, Breck Amick, Gene Collins, Jack Cartier and Frank Robinson
