It is indeed the time for you to read another ROAR Zine publication. With this beautiful fifth edition, you will no doubt view the unique style born from the collaboration of the incoming and soon-to-be graduating editors. We are beyond grateful for the work the junior editors have put into making this the best it could be! This issue has all you could ever want--stunning photography, visceral visual art, pets galore, and endless recommendations for all of your media consuming needs. With all of these amazing things in store, “perhaps the best thing to do is to stop writing introductions and get on with the book.” (Winnie the Pooh). Please enjoy!

'Dreamboat Annie' - Heart (1975)

Heart's 1975 album 'Dreamboat Annie' has all the 70s feel one could hope for. Combining elements of folk and rock music, the iconic sister duo creates captivating narratives in each song, with an album that flows together beautifully. The most popular track from this album is "Crazy On You", although my personal favourite is "(Love Me Like Music) I'll Be Your Song" "Dreamboat Annie" is the perfect soundtrack to fulfill your need for a vintage-esque road trip.

'Hozier' - Hozier (2014)

"Hozier" is the self titled debut studio album of the Irish singer, released in 2014. The album combines aspects of folk, rock, blues and gospel, to create an incredible album full of heart-wrenchingly beautiful songs that will take you on an emotional journey. It is absolutely one of my favourite albums of all time, and the 6th track "Work Song" is probably my second favourite song of all time. This is a very powerful album, perfect for dusk and nighttime roadtrips

'The Battle At Garden's Gate' - Greta Van Fleet (2021)

Sparkly mullet men manifest into the band Greta Van Fleet, who in 2021, released their album 'The Battle At Garden's Gate'. From ballads to classic rock bangers, this album has it all The top track from this album is "Light My Love", a powerful ballad which highlights lead singer, Josh Kiszka's, voice at it's highest potential. The two of us (Poppy and Talulla), have agreed that our favourite track is "Broken Bells", another ballad, but if you ' re looking for an upbeat song, we'd recommend "My Way Soon"

'Rebel Yell' - Billy Idol (1983)

Billy Idol's 'Rebel Yell' is a captivating rock album which sold over 10 million records upon its release in 1983. This album follows the great success of his 1982 self-titled album, which has hit songs such as "White Wedding" The top track off this album is the title track, "Rebel Yell", and for good reason too Idol's iconic vocals enhance each song greatly, and I would highly recommend giving 'Rebel Yell' a listen - especially my personal favourite track, "Eyes Without A Face".

'Dr. Feelgood'- Mötley Crüe (1989)

Motley Crue's 'Dr.Feelgood' is the LA-based, heavy metal band's fifth studio album. This roller coaster of music was recorded in 1989 after the band made a vow to remain sober in support of their bassist, Nikki Sixx, who struggled with substance abuse. If you like metal music, fast-paced songs, and some morally questionable lyrics, this is the album for you! My favourite track is definitely "Same Ol' Situation" because of its amazing instrumentals and Vince Neil's incredible vocals

'Desolation Boulevard' - Sweet (1974)

If classic rock gave us anything, Sweet's 1974 album 'Desolation Boulevard' is one thing I'm incredibly grateful for. If Led Zepplin and AC/DC had a child, this album would be it. The most popular track from it is "Ballroom Blitz"; with Brian Connolly's explorative vocals enhancing the song greatly. My favourite track is a tie between "Ballroom Blitz", and "Set Me Free". If you ' re in the hunt for yet another rock album, 'Desolation Boulevard' might be just the perfect fit for you!

'The Ri and The Spiders From Mars ' - David Bowie (1972)

'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust' is perhaps David Bowie's most influential album and one of the best albums of all time. The story follows Bowie's character Ziggy Stardust, an androgynous and bisexual rockstar who was sent to earth before an apocalyptic disaster. He wins the hearts of his fans but eventually succumbs to his own ego and experiences a 'fall from grace ' . If you are looking for an art-rock album that really tells a story, this is the album for you. I would recommend the track titled "Moonage Daydream" for all your sunset road trips.

Before leaving Stratford Hall, I have to recommend one of my personal favourite Drive restaurants, Naruto Sushi Not only do they have fairly affordable prices, they also have incredible pumpkin tempura rolls. If you have never tried one, you are surely missing out. The warm and crispy tempura is perfectly balanced with the hint of vinegar in the rice and a sprinkle of sesame seeds I also recommend trying their spicy salmon or tuna roll with crispy tempura batter mixed with the fish If that wasn’t enough to convince you to go, to top it all off, it is a mere two and a half blocks away from the DP building.

RADHIKA (Action & Wellness)

Every year when it starts to get colder I am reminded why winter is my favourite season. The air is just so crisp and clean and it is such an amazing time for fun activities like sledding and decorating gingerbread houses When it snows it feels like the city calms down and I love having snowball fights and spending time in the snow Being outside in the snow is usually fun until you get completely soaked, but the feeling of coming inside and having hot chocolate or cider is truly one of the most undeniably warm, happy feelings. Overall, winter is the perfect season to have so much fun outdoors while also creating amazing memories all the time

VICTORIA (Arts)

Have you ever been to Victoria, Montreal, Ottawa, or Quebec City and been craving a sweet treat? Look no further than ChocolatFavoris! Tragic that there are none in Vancouver, or else I would frequent it at least on the weekly. As the name suggests, it is a chocolate shop, where you can get chocolate bars and cans of chocolate fondue, but it’s also an ice cream shop, where you can get different chocolate dips ON THE ICE CREAM! The chocolate layer is thick enough that you can break open the top and eat the ice cream inside with a spoon Incredible But most amazing are the chocolate poutines Churros for the fries, melted chocolate for the gravy, marshmallows for cheese and whatever other toppings you see fit: oreos, brownies, whatever. All laid upon a bed of ice cream. It’s truly a magical experience. 10/10, would recommend.

MADELEINE (Arts)

NoSuchThingasaFish is a very odd podcast from the BBC, chronicling the most niche and irrelevant details of human and natural history It’s funny, unique, and more than engaging: I like to listen to it while knitting or doing homework It adds a factor of excitement to the mundane setting into these frosty fall days. Run by four comedians –random knowledge aficionados? – each person presents a fact that is elaborated upon and spun into the most unique stories. Did you know that Shirley Temple, the child star, was also an internationally respected diplomat? She was the US Ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia! No Such Thing as a Fish is full of heart and warmth, keeping you curious It’s a gentle reminder to the very weird nature of our planet. Be warned for a little bit of profanity, though.

ALY (Innovation & Academics)

Apple’sM2MacBookAir, represents a new design generation for the MacBook Air. With a powerful processor, amazing 13.3” display, MagSafe, and weighing in at just 12 kg, on the surface this laptop may be the perfect laptop But it has two issues that all buyers should be aware of Firstly, in the base model with 256GB of storage, the speed of the SSD is slower than in the M1 MacBook Air, as Apple has chosen to use a single rather than two NAND flash chip, which has a significant impact on SSD performance. A second issue with this laptop is thermal throttling. When testing this device, many noted that the SoC overheats under certain loads (especially long term loads), due to this laptop’s lack of a fan Despite this, I still recommend this laptop to any casual user who uses their laptop primarily for web browsing, as the SSD and CPU are very powerful for most users, and its features and form factor make it a solid option for all but the most demanding users.

DANA (Innovation & Academics)

Good On You (goodonyou.eco) is an ethical fashion directory It rates the sustainability of clothing brands based on their impact on people, animals and the planet, which contributes to the brand’s overall score from 1 (we avoid) to 5 (great) It includes brands from around the world, including smaller businesses I like that it’s straightforward to use and has short write-ups to explain where ratings come from. For each brand, they recommend other clothing brands with a similar style and price range in the “good” to “great” rating categories. Given our role in consumerism, I think it’s really important to be aware of the impact of what we buy. Although Good On You does not have every brand out there, and further research is always beneficial, this is a great starting point I encourage you to check it out!

ILYAS (Athletics)

I love watchinghockey and so should you Hockey is a fast paced action packed sport that gives you thrills and fun Hockey is for everyone, whether you are a beginner or have been watching hockey forever More specifically don't cheer for the home team in the Vancouver Canucks, they are terrible. Cheer for the Edmonton Oilers who currently have Connor McDavid rostered, the best player in the world. Hockey is more fast paced than soccer and basketball and is Canada’s sport. Next time you want to take a break from school, instead of watching YouTube or Netflix, watch Connor McDavid and the Oilers as they look to win the Stanley Cup Championship

SIMON (Athletics)

I strongly recommend everyone to watch Spongebob Squarepants. Spongebob is a perfect show to watch if you want to take a break for school or if you just want to relax after a long day. Spongebob lives with his friends in Bikini Bottom as well as his pet snail, Garry. Spongebob works as a fry cook at the local Krusty Krab for his boss, Mr Krabs Watch Spongebob Squarepants to see all the adventures Spongebob and his buddies go on!

ALYSSA (Spirit)

Aftersun - The directorial debut of Charlotte Wells is a moving glimpse into how we deal with love and loss and quite honestly, it destroyed me when I watched it The film follows Sophie and Calum, a father-daughter duo played by Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio, as they take a vacation to Turkey Twenty years later, adult Sophie struggles to come to terms with the loss of her father Every element is incredible The cinematography, manages to simultaneously capture the love Sophie has for her father as well as the grief she feels through intimate home video footage and contemporary shots. The soundtrack is both nostalgic and timeless. The films' performances, nuanced. For me, Aftersun manages to be both a warm hug and a bucket of ice cold water getting thrown in my face. I smiled during the bittersweet moments of Sophie and Calum’s travels, I cried during the quiet moments which hit far too close to home Aftersun is one of the most heartfelt films to be released this year and it is a must watch for many more reasons than the ones I’ve mentioned here

MORGAN (Spirit)

Philadelphia Phillies’ - The Phillies’ are in the World Series! You gotta be cheering for them over the Astros (for those of you don't know what the World Series is, I'm talking about baseball). They haven’t been to the fall classic in over 13 years, and now they’re destined to defeat the evil Houston Astros! I’m just kidding of course if you’re an Astros fan Even if you don’t like Philadelphia or ever heard of baseball, you should still root for Philadelphia for two reasons:

1) Philadelphia is the major underdog in this matchup, and who doesn’t love an underdog? And

2) The Astros’ are probably one of sports’ most hated teams, which came as a consequence of their cheating scandal back in 2017 getting revealed. We don’t want cheaters to win do we? So, in conclusion, Go Phillies!I

TV show recommendations from Alyssa F. (12)

Television is a one of a kind medium where smaller, more intimate stories get their chance to shine on screen. It allows characters and plot lines to develop, and improve, over the course of a few episodes, seasons or over an entire series. There are thousands of shows currently streaming, airing and upcoming which deserve your unbridled attention, but here are just a few standouts out right now.

A masterclass in outstanding production and execution.

Succession

gr. 9+, tragicomedy & drama

Succession centers around the Roy family, owners of media conglomerate Waystar RoyCo, as they compete against one another for control of the company. The premise of the show is rather simple but it’s explored in such a way which manages to keep viewers on the edge of their seats throughout all three seasons and forces audiences to care for deeply flawed characters

While all elements of the production are breathtaking, especially the wardrobe department who never fail to create some of the most elegant looks to graze the small screen and the set department who find some of the most incredible locations in all of New York, the camera work on the show is some of the best around. The camera works as if it's its own character; looking around a space as if entering a room for the first time, dipping in and out of conversations, weaving in and out of crowds and peering through doors or windows. The audience is invited in and quickly thrown back out at a moment's notice. It's a strange balance to strike and yet, it's effective and executed wonderfully. Alongside this, the writing is witty, dramatic and often gut wrenching, carefully teetering the line between drama and comedy The exquisite writing is performed by the incredibly talented cast, all of which give it their all and never fail to make viewers care about the deeply flawed people around Waystar RoyCo.

There are some truly iconic lines which have come from Succession over the seasons, most of which include varying amounts of profanity and need some context in order to be appreciated, but are made as iconic as they are due to the performances. Some standouts include Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy, easily the most flawed and broken man on television but Strong portrays him in such a way that no one else could. As well as Matthew Macfadyen and Nicholas Braun, the toxic dynamic duo made up of Tom Wambsgans and Greg Hirsch who never fail to change the entire tone of a scene, often being the funniest on the entire show. Succession has talent oozing from every scene and this article would be an Extended Essay to go into all of the wonderful performances the show has to offer.

In the end, there is no doubt that Succession showcases some of the best of the best on TV right now. It is a carefully crafted masterpiece which nevers to make the most vile of people loveable and never fails to deliver some of the best television out there

Andor follows the story of Cassian Andor, one of the beloved heroes of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story played by Diego Luna, five years before Rogue One takes place Andor asks the question “What compels someone to sacrifice their life for a cause?” with the aim of answering it somewhere in the story of Cassian Andor.

Andor knows exactly what story it wants to tell, needing to fit everything into the short 5 year time frame, while also recognizing that not everything needs to be included. It picks its story beats to pure perfection, carefully crafting the answer to its central question. As the show is still airing, the central question has yet to be answered fully but so far it's been explored beautifully The cinematography stunning, writing incredibly realistic and grounded and the performances from the entire cast are nothing less than breathtaking All of the cast shine but it’s Luna’s performance which carries most of the weight of the show, giving nothing less than an authentic and heart wrenching performance as Cassian Andor never forgets its roots with many glimpses of the Rogue One Cassian fans came to love back in 2016 while still recognizing that he isn’t the man in Rogue One.

Andor

Rogue One was the story of an event which didn’t allow its characters to shine in the ways they could’ve and Andor is the complete opposite, focusing on the people behind the events rather than the events themselves Andor explores our lives on Earth in the Star Wars galaxy, not only through its characters but also in its exploration of issues which we are dealing with today; including but not limited to, police brutality, immigration, corruption, racism and fascism. Despite all of this, Andor feels tightly tied to the Star Wars universe while displaying a new layer of the beloved franchise to better reflect our current world. Diego Luna, when speaking about the show; “The stories we tell reflect the world that’s out there” which is exactly what Andor does throughout its incredible start to season one.

It should be mentioned that Andor is slow, taking its time to meticulously introduce its corner of the galaxy to fans, but eventually ramps up to one of the best pieces of Star Wars media yet The pacing of the show is in no way a fault, arguably making the story and message much stronger, but may cause some viewers to be less invested than others

Ultimately, Andor is a show that no one explicitly asked for (except for the Cassian stans) but is a welcome surprise and a breath of fresh air. It strives to the best Star Wars has to offer, succeeding beautifully in its first season.

The latest installment in the Star Wars franchise, and easily one of its best.

gr. 8+, action & adventure

L e g e n d s o f V o x M a c h i n a

The Legend of Vox Machina was created by Critical Role, a Dungeons and Dragons web show run by a group of “nerdy voice actors” as said by Matthew Mercer, premiered in January of 2022 on Amazon Prime Video. The show follows the adventures of Vox Machina, a band of eight unlikely heroes, which premiers new adventures from the group as well as adapting beloved arcs from the original Vox Machina campaign The season is split into two stories; the Terror of Tal’Dorei and the Briarwood arc, the later of which takes up most of the season The show stays incredibly faithful to the source material, something which can be accredited to the fact that everyone who worked on the show was a fan of the original campaign and most of the show was actually funded by fans on Kickstarter.

Like most adaptations, fans of Critical Role will get more out of the show than the casual viewer but casual viewers are welcomed with open arms by the world of Tal’Dorei. The characters are carefully crafted to fit the small screen while still maintaining the elements which made them lovable in the first place The performances throughout the show, most of which come from the original cast, are nothing more than stunning, polished versions of the original campaign acting and uphold the original dynamics of the campaign. The cast bring an incredible amount of heart to their characters, most of whom were created by those who voice them, and viewers can hear the love pouring out of the screen. The animation brings the characters to life in a way which live action never could, allowing for viewers to be fully immersed in the rich world of Tal’Dorei, all while being a constant reminder that The Legend of Vox Machina is incredibly adult, featuring some of the most brutal and vile violence on TV right now

Overall, The Legend of Vox Machina is a love letter to the campaign, both for the fans and for the creators, and is a rollercoaster from start to finish. The show welcomes casual viewers with open arms and allows previous fans to jump right back into the fun of the original campaign without skipping a beat. No matter what perspective one looks at the show with, it’s an incredibly witty, heartfelt and carefully crafted piece of TV

A love letter to Dungeons & Dragons, both for the fans and for the creators

Young Royals

A reliable teen drama.

Young Royals, a Swedish Netflix series which originally released in 2021, was a quiet hit when it was first released on Netflix. Now the show is an international hit, reaching the Top 10 charts on Netflix in 33 countries. Young Royals follows Prince Wilhelm of Sweden at Hillerska, an elite boarding school, where he meets Simon, a fellow student, and the pair begin a romance

Young Royals is carried by the outstanding performances of young leads, Edvin Ryding and Omar Rudberg, but the supporting cast is equally talented and the show would not be the same without them. Most of the actors are incredibly close to the age of the characters that they’re playing which adds a layer of authenticity to the show This authenticity is further developed through the show's themes of sexuality, class differences, anxiety and grief, especially with COVID-19 and mental health. Wilhelm deals with severe anxiety and grief throughout the two seasons, brought beautifully to life by Ryding, and it is incredibly rare to find a show which deals with these topics with as much care as Young Royals does

gr. 10+, romance & drama

Both seasons of Young Royals are fantastic; however, season two fumbles where season one originally succeeded. Season one tells an airtight story of Simon and Wilhelm while also starting to explore its side characters. On the other hand, season two feels messier as it strays from its beloved leads instead following August and Sara for most of the season, arguably having more to do this season than Wilhelm and Simon. With that being said, there is an incredibly cute, yet underdeveloped, side plot between two childhood best friends and their feelings for each other.

Ultimately, Young Royals is a reliable teen drama, despite the lavish setting and oddly specific problems the characters face throughout the seasons It is important to note that while it is a Swedish show, that should not deter viewers from giving the show a chance. The English dub captures the essence of the original Swedish version, many of the dub voices are provided by the original cast members; however, there are small details that get lost in translations and there is truly nothing like the original version of the show

English Muffin

1 cup milk

2 tbsp. white sugar

1 (.25oz) pack active dry yeast

1 cup warm water (45 C)

/4 cup melted shortening

6 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp. salt

Warm milk in a small saucepan until it bubbles, then remove from heat.

Mix in sugar until dissolved and let cool until lukewarm.

In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand until creamy, around 10 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine milk, yeast mixture, shortening, and 3 cups flour and beat until smooth. Add salt and the rest of the flour to make a soft dough. Knead and place in greased bowl, cover, and let rise.

Punch dough down & roll out to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into rounds with biscuit cutter or drinking glass. Sprinkle waxed paper with cornmeal and set rounds on this to rise 1/2 hour.

Heat greased griddle. Cook muffins around 10 minutes on each side on medium heat. Keep baked muffins in oven until all are ready. Let cool.

3 egg yolks

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 tsp dijon mustard

1/4 tsp salt

pinch of cayenne

1/2 cup unsalted butter

01. Melt butter in microwave (covered!) or on stove for 1 minute.

02. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand until creamy, around 10 minutes.

Add egg yolks, lemon juice, dijon, salt & cayenne pepper into a blender for 5 seconds until combined

Salmon (2 servings)

1 salmon filet

1 tsp lemon juice

1 tbsp butter

Cut filet into pieces small enough to fit onto an english muffin.

Marinate salmon overnight in lemon juice.

03. Cook until golden brown and soft inside.

Poached Egg (1 serving)

1 large egg

1-2 tbsp vinegar (optional)

01. Bring a large pot of water to a boil.

02. Crack an egg into a small fine mesh sieve over a bowl. Swirl egg in sieve until liquid-y egg whites are removed. Place egg in ramekin.

Stir vinegar into water & create a vortex. Add egg into middle of vortex & cook 3 minutes.

Remove egg with slotted spoon & dab it on a paper towel to remove excess water & serve immediately.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things

Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things (based off of the book by Ian Reid) is packed with confusing scenes that you might not be able to interpret at first… I had to watch a couple youtube videos to just start to understand the plot. The film follows a young woman (Jessie Buckley), on a road trip with her boyfriend, Jake (Jesse Plemons), to his parents’ farmhouse in the winter as she thinks about breaking up with him. It discusses popular media and its effects on your thoughts and behaviour, how it can take over your mind and warp your perspectives. Kaufman is known for confusing movies that take a while to comprehend, and this time he outdid himself. With misleading dialogue that at first seems random, and unclear statements and scenes whose meanings aren’t explicitly revealed at all, the movie definitely feels likeafeverdream.

That being said, the way it delivers its themes and messages is artistic and evokes more emotion than clear understanding. The way it deals with truth, expectations and aging all seem real and true. It definitely doesn’t seem like they held back with their intentions for the film. Once you uncover the meaning of the movie and start to realize the meaning behind each scene and each line of dialogue, it truly starts to feel personal. As specific and incomprehensible as it seems, the messages aren’t at all distant from the lives we live. The performances are astounding; every character feels real and alive as if they existed in your own real life, and the song The Dream Ballet from one of the final scenes is amazing. I encourage you to watch this movieifyou’recomfortablewithdiscomfort.

JojoRabbitis an anti-war film which includes satire of Hitler. From a young German boy's perspective, it shows how he is able to maintain a lighthearted childhood despite the world around him struggling to maintain structure. Jojo Betzler's imaginary friend Hitler continues to tell him to be loyal to the Nazi youth, while his mother tries to convince him that war is terrible and Jewish people are no different. As Jojo is in continuous denial, he discovers that his mother has been hiding a Jewish girl in the walls of their house.

Inspired by the book Caging Skies, Taika Waititi has created this film to bring light on how adults have such a strong influence on children and can take advantage of that in negative ways. It's heartwarming as well as heartbreaking with strong messages throughout, and throughout the film you can't help but realise how much influence adults can have, and how that affects someone's childhood.

Wendell & Wild follows the story of Kat, a teenage punk-rocker who returned to her hometown for the first time since her parents' death. The audiences watch as Kat deals with her inner demons in a literal sense, alongside discovering her own identity - what makes her unique, and how to cope with the events that happened in her past. Not only this but Wendell & Wild has some of the best representation in film I've seen in a hot minute.

They not only depict characters from numerous cultural backgrounds, but also representation of queer people (eg. Raúl, who is heavily implied to be trans). I would say this phenomenal film has a similar energy to films created by LAIKA Studios; who produced both Coraline (2009) and Paranorman (2012). The sheer amount of dedication and care put behind this piece of art created by Monkeypaw Productions is insane, and I would highly recommend it for people of all ages!

The Dirt

Following the band's commercial success throughout the 80s and 90s, TheDirtdepicts Mötley Crüe's destructive rise to fame. Taking place across L.A's infamous "Sunset Strip", audiences follow Nikki Sixx (bass), alongside Tommy Lee (drums), as they build the band from scratch; discovering Mick Mars' undeniable talent on the guitar, and Vince Neil's piercing vocals along the way. This film covers 20+ years of the band's career, with the production of the film itself being guided by the actual band; depicting the band during their "glory days", if you would consider being a rockstar touring constantly glorious. The wild side can be a little too wild for some.

After we saw Mötley Crüe this summer on their stadium tour, it's clear that the band doesn't possess the same glam they once did, but the film put it into perspective how far they've come and grown as people - acting as a time capsule to an era difficult for each of the four members (Tommy Lee, however, most likely has no regrets). We give this movie 10/$800-leather-pants, and would highly recommend giving it a watch. If you're into rock, sparkles, and all things boy bands, this movie is for you!

An easy to love period piece. Rosaline (2022), dir. Karen Maine Grade8+ Romanticcomedy

Rosaline, follows (Kaitlyn Dever) Romeo’s ex named Rosaline as she tries to win him back from Juliet and her father trying to marry her off to someone else. It's a reimagining of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, taking the source material and slightly turning it on its head. While multiple elements of the film aren’t particularly special, specifically the cinematography and editing which are just there to get the job done, the stunning costumes and set pieces make up for it alongside the wonderful performances of many of the film’s cast members. The typical rivals-to-lovers format is incredibly effective throughout the film and is only made better by the film's leads, despite the fact that it covers well-trod territory. Ultimately Rosaline is a wonderful addition to the romcom genre, and the collection of period pieces out there, which will no doubt make your day just a little brighter.

After it became a British colony in 1840, boarding schools to "civilize" Maori children became prevalent. These schools aimed to erase the Maori language and culture. Only 26% of children spoke their native language by 1960. Today, schools teaching Maori have been reintroduced, and curriculums incorporate Maori culture. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been payed in reparations and the government has acknowledged their breach of the treaty which established the colony.

Australia: Indigenous families and children were consistently separated since the start of colonisation in the 1700s. Children were placed in training institutions to become labourers. 1997 inquiry made 54 recommendations, in 1998 there was the first annual National Sorry Day, and in 2001 Pope John Paul II issued a formal apology for the role of Catholic institutions.

Circular Economy

The circular economy is a model based on the very framework of nature. It makes production cyclical, repurposing materials after their use, or letting the materials return to their natural source through biodegradation. A circular economy is much more sustainable than a linear economy, as it reduces the risk of having finite resources run out.

When it comes to executing the successful shift to circularity and a selfsufficient system, a major part would be building infrastructure to support the shift. We would need to build infrastructure to help manufacture biodegradable materials and reprocess materials to be used again. Governmental institutions could be responsible for targeting specific products, like chip bags, cans, and electronics. As a government overseeing multiple companies producing these items, they could implement task forces to try to shift the product to be more renewable or biodegradable.

This makes the government the most responsible institution when it comes to managing the shift. When handled by the government rather than privatized, the strategy could be to target products instead of businesses. The outworking of this would likely involve laws and incentives to regulate businesses producing these products, shifting them towards the circular economy.

Additionally, a circular economy could be a key aspect of climate change policy. While the United Nations may have some success through climate conferences, often it is hard to implement policies that target businesses specifically, making them largely ineffective beyond simply compelling countries to do so on their own. Therefore, the UN as an institution concerning the global circular economy is mainly concerned with pushing this to the forefront of the fight against climate change and getting countries to set their individual targets.

In order for the shift to circularity to be self-sufficient, there has to be local engagement. Without the people of a nation backing this shift, especially in a democratically governed nation, it would be extremely difficult for any changes to hold much weight. Local NGOs and other organizations play an important role in transforming local culture to be excited about a circular economy. As culture shifts towards buying products that are made with sustainability and renewability in mind, this puts pressure on businesses and institutions to make a circular economy a priority.

To conclude, the shift to circularity and a self-sufficient system where there is engagement on a local level and within businesses and institutions is not something easily achieved. It will take the combined efforts of the government to implement laws and incentives, the responses of large corporations, the building of new infrastructure, and engagement within civil society to encourage a culture that supports the economy being built.

Sounds good, right? How would we get to that point? How do we ensure that everyone has the building blocks to be equal, to live in that hypothetical world?

One simple word: allyship.

Allyship is the foundation for equity and justice. Allies tend to have more privilege, and can recognize that privilege. They have powerful voices that coexist with oppressed ones, voices that can empower minorities 33

I originally wanted to created a monochromatic piece, meaning everything would be the same colour, but eventually decided to use a different colour for the totem pole than the rest of the piece to show the cultural contrast that exists within this area.
