Soft Engineering brings together, for the first time, the work of three inspiring textile designer makers. Having pursued separate careers in knitting and weaving, they find many common threads that have now inspired them to work together on this joint exhibition. Despite employing different techniques and structures, their approaches interconnect and cross over in intriguing and sometimes surprising ways. Their passion for textiles shines through the original work that has been specifically created for this

exhibition The Malthouse Bar & Kitchen is situated on the edge of Stroud on the A46 Painswick Road. The restaurant has been sensitively and lovingly renovated by Dan Sturdy and Sophie Finston with manager Sarah Capewell, who ran the Exmouth Arms in Cheltenham. Dan also owns Black Book Café in Stroud and has a strong interest in the area and the arts. The Malthouse once housed the Stroud Brewery and sits next to a busy Antique Centre and Auction house. Now this proud industrial building has enjoyed a face lift keeping many of the original features and atmosphere. SITselect was invited to curate exhibitions to complement and enhance the exciting new space. It is a challenging and wonderful opportunity to bring contemporary work to a wide audience. Opening at the Malthouse the inaugural exhibition has textile work by Michelle House, Carole Waller and Fiona Hutchison presented by SITselect.

Block Printing with Natural Dyes Linda Row one day workshop Saturday 21 May 10am – 5pm Atelier, 1st Floor, 19a Lower Street, Stroud GL5 2HT Sustainable clothing designer Linda Row will take you through the process of dyeing silk with a range of natural dyes; using environmentally friendly mordants and applying a design using iron as a colour modifier. There will be a short introduction to Linda’s work in the ethical fashion sector, followed by a demonstration of preparing a dye bath, and an opportunity to dye a pieces of silk cloth, using madder, weld, cutch and logwood. A range of materials will be available to create a block for printing and you will be able to work out a design for your fabric. Linda will then demonstrate how to print with iron and gum arabic, followed by an opportunity to experiment with your blocks. Finally you will be able to print your design onto a silk square. This technique can be applied to fabric for clothing, accessories and interior textiles. Linda Row is founder of Clothworks in 1997 and Boutique-Ethique in 2006. Ethical consumerism has always been the driving force behind her work. During the course of her MA at Bath Spa University, in 2012, Linda started to develop ways of incorporating conductive materials into her clothing, to protect the wearer from electric smog. Continuing with her research at Manchester Metropolitan University she is looking at the way technologies such as mobile phones are being used and becoming relied on by different sectors of the population and incorporating neutralizing elements into her clothing designs. She is also currently teaching at Manchester School of Art. Fee: £60 includes materials and teas/coffees; bring your lunch to share www.boutique-ethique.co.uk
